Do you struggle with transforming your outfits from day to night? Don’t worry, CF is here to help turn that daily annoyance into a fun challenge. This column will focus on one piece per week, and teach you how to take your look from study sessions in the library to dancing the night away.

Valentine’s Day is upon us, which means those of us in relationships are dropping hints to our clueless significant others and desperately scrambling for cute date ideas, while the rest of us are just plain annoyed with the sickening sweetness of it all. Cue the groans.

Even though we can all generally agree that Valentine’s Day is a lame excuse for a holiday, I still have an urge to celebrate. Call me crazy, but for some reason February 14th brings out the little girl in me. Remember those adorable valentines we used to get in elementary school? And all of that candy? Now that’s what I call a holiday celebration. This year, I say we silence our inner cynics and make Cupid proud by dressing accordingly.

A lace dress is the perfect flirty, feminine piece to show off a little V-Day pride in class and go out on a sweet date with either that special someone or your gal pals.

Lace Dress: Class

Dress, Cardigan, Bag, Shoes, Earrings, Necklace

Get into the holiday spirit without being overly kitschy by pairing your lace dress with a soft pink cardigan. In a sea of obnoxious fuchsias and bright reds, pale pink is the perfect alternative Valentine’s color.

Accessorize with classic, girly jewelry like pearl stud earrings and a heart-shaped locket, complete with a picture of your beloved (or Ryan Gosling) inside. Put a spring in your step by sporting brown oxfords with a subtle gold shimmer, and be sure to wear tights if you’re combating the cold! Avoid the grandmotherly look with a bold, neutral bag to balance out the frills.

Lace Dress: Night Out

Keep the focus on the dress for your night out by adding just a few simple, feminine touches. Again, we want to avoid looking over 60.

Continue the pale pink color scheme with a pretty clutch and add dazzling pearl-accented earrings for an uber-girly look. Nude heels add to this classic look, though I also think a pair of oxford pumps would look stellar with this dress, and give you a bit more edge. Give your nails a touch of shimmer with a rose gold polish that accents your accessories and ties the look together.

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, it’s time to get in the holiday spirit, and what better way to do that than with festive nail art? To help you celebrate in style, here’s a tutorial for decorating your nails like the ultimate V-Day candy classic: conversation hearts.

Follow these steps to create some digit-al romance (ha). This works best with nails that are a bit longer – just past your fingertips is ideal. Wash your hands and shape your nails before getting started!

What You Need:

• Base coat – As always, I used Orly Bonder Rubberized Base Coat.
• Various pastel polishes - I chose 5, one for each of my fingers, that are similar to the original conversation heart colors. The colors I used are Essie Carousel Coral, Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear in White on, OPI Hey! Get in Lime, Sephora by OPI Havana Dreams and Revlon Scented Perfume Nail Enamel in Gum Drop. (Yes, I just said scented! It smells like gumdrops when it dries, how cool is that?)
• Top coat - My favorite is Seche Clear.
• Optional: Tape

What To Do:

1. Start with a clear base coat. If your nails are stained (like mine often are from over-polishing), you may want to paint them a nude color before moving on to the next step.
2. Take one of your pastel colors and – if you have steady hands – swipe it along the tip of your nail like you would to make French tips. If you have a hard time painting straight lines on your nails, take a piece of scotch tape and place it just below the tip before adding color to create a perfect line. Another option is to do it freehand and not worry about making it perfect, and to then go back and clean it up with a Q-tip dipped in polish remover.
3. Repeat step 2 on all your nails, alternating colors on each one. I picked a pattern for mine – more on that later.
4. Now comes the tricky part. To make the hearts, I find it easiest to use your polish brush to make a downward-facing V, basically dabbing it once going at one diagonal and then the other. Don’t try to “draw” the heart on with your nail polish brush like you would on paper; the brush isn’t fine enough and you’ll end up with a blob. Until you get a feel for how much polish to use to make the hearts, start with very little on the brush; it’s always easier to add more than it is to remove what’s already there. This part got especially difficult for me when painting my right hand, but if it doesn’t end up perfect on your first try, don’t worry, just like with the tips, you can always clean up the edges with a Q-tip dipped in nail polish remover later!
5. You’re done! Finish if off with a shiny top coat and let the flow of compliments begin.

Some Notes About Colors and Patterns:

I didn’t want any of my nails to have the same color combination, so when I first painted the tips on one hand, I chose a pattern (purple, green, white, blue, pink) and then used the same pattern starting with a different color on the other hand (green, white, blue, pink purple). I then did the same thing with the hearts, using the same pattern on each hand but starting at a different point in the pattern than I had before.

You can choose to alternate your colors however you’d like, but I found this to be a simple way to achieve the effect I wanted.

If you don’t already have this installed, what are you waiting for?

Suggested scripts: Invisibility Cloak, an extension similar to LeechBlock but with a bonus Harry Potter reference.

Cons: If you don’t know how to code, fixing or editing a Greasemonkey script can be difficult.

eBay Sidebar

For the college student in need of a discount, eBay is something of a godsend (right up until your bank account hits zero, anyway). The official eBay add-on places a sidebar in Firefox that keeps track of items you’re bidding on or selling, so that you can watch the seconds tick by until that vintage spy trench becomes yours. Warning: May cause undue amounts of stress.

Cons: The sidebar will sometimes automatically log you out, occasionally preventing a last-minute bid from going through. Unacceptable, guys.

Wired-Marker

Ever read through a webpage and wish you had some way of highlighting the important bits? Evidently the developers of Wired-Marker did, because they created an extension that lets you do just that. The markers come in eight colors for easy differentiation and the app automatically exports any and all highlighted webpages to the Bookmarks folder for safekeeping. Use on both text and images for maximum effect.

Cons: Once used, the highlighter cannot be deleted. Tread carefully, and mark with caution.

His bohemian, rock star style is extremely fashion-forward, yet is so easy to translate to a twentysomething girl’s wardrobe. Elements of Steven Tyler’s Style

Steven Tyler incorporates many different styles into his own look. His outfits frequently feature many hippie elements, such as feather earrings, suede fringe, leather headwraps, flared jeans, and floppy hats.

Steven is also known for his bad-boy rockstar image as well. He’s a fan of tight leather pants, piles of necklaces and bracelets, black nail polish, deep v necks (I like to call them capital V’s!), motorcycle boots, and aviator sunglasses.

Steven Tyler’s signature is his use of bold, colorful patterns. He likes to rock patterned blouses, and used to tie large printed scarves to his microphone stand during concerts!

The key to getting Steven Tyler’s look is really just to wear what you think looks cool. It’s obvious that Steven Tyler doesn’t follow any fashion rules, and doesn’t care if a piece is meant for a man or woman, or meant to be dressy or casual. By throwing an unexpected piece into a regular outfit, you’ll create interest and rock your own unique look.

This look channels Steven’s flower child aesthetic. Seventies fashion has been back for a while now, and Steven’s interpretation of this trend is a perfect example of how to modernize the look! Dust off your old flared jeans from high school and pair them with a floral pussy bow blouse. Add a vest — fur or suede, depending on the season — and finish the outfit with feather earrings, a floppy hat, and a pair of wedges.

This outfit is inspired by Steven’s look from when he made his comeback in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Leather pants have a classic, rock and roll look, and are perfectly balanced by a simple striped v-neck. Add a grungy denim jacket, and glam up the look with leopard flats, a fringed clutch, dreamcatcher earrings, and a guitar cuff bracelet.

Sometimes looking at your closet can feel like a math problem that doesn’t add up. You have so many pieces of clothing, but so few outfits to make with them. You can run to the mall for new clothing, but often that doesn’t solve the problem, just breaks the bank. While wardrobe remixing can help, sometimes it’s hard to know where to start.

So, in the spirit of “wardrobe remixing”, I’m here to present to you Real-Life Style Challenges. While we’ve covered fashion challenges here before, this new column aims to bring those ideas to life. Every two weeks, I’ll be taking a certain theme and creating outfits, using items in my own closet, that follow that challenge. I’ll be sharing the results with you here so you too can get inspiration in expanding your wardrobe.

The Challenge:

We all love our dresses, but there’s no denying that they can sometimes feel a little one-note. Maybe one day you’ll wear tights under one, maybe not. A cardigan or blazer over one, perhaps. But it doesn’t seem like there are many more ways to style a dress. That’s where this week’s challenge comes from: Turns out, there are actually TONS of ways to wear your dresses!

So this week’s challenge was a simple one: Wear a dress in an interesting and different way each day of the week. This is similar to the challenge from The Uniform Project, although this version is easier because you have the option of wearing different dresses, instead of the same one for five days.

The Results:

• Monday: I wore a short grey T-shirt dress under a high-waisted utility skirt and added tights, a brown belt, and brown oxfords.
• Tuesday: I layered a short, cap-sleeved black dress over a long-sleeved teal blouse, and added leggings and lace-up boots to make the look cold weather-appropriate.
• Wednesday: I broke out one of my summer dresses – this yellow floral one – and made it warmer by layering on a tied-up denim shirt. Tights and boots complete the look.
• Thursday: I decided to switch things up with a black maxi dress; by layering it under a basic crew neck sweater, I gave it the appearance of a maxi skirt.
• Friday: A polka dot dress got a new lease on life with a few simple additions, namely a basic purple sweater and belt.

What I Learned:

The key to this challenge is to layer, layer and layer some more. This is also an especially good challenge to try in the winter months – I noticed it helped me make my dresses more wearable for frigid days. The best thing about this challenge is once you figure out a way to re-purpose one dress, the possibilities are endless. Almost any of the combinations above can be mixed and matched!

A few more tips I picked up from this challenge:

• Have a skirt and dress that are roughly the same length? Try wearing the skirt over the dress for a fun new combination, just like in the first outfit of the set.
• A sweater is the perfect thing to wear over dresses that might not be great for colder months, like your sleeveless maxi or spaghetti strap minidress. Belt an oversized sweater to show off your shape.
• Try knotting up a button-down shirt over a dress, like I did in the Wednesday outfit. This will not only make it look like you’re wearing a skirt and top, but it will also give your waist great definition.
• Wearing a button-down under a dress can get tricky, you can toe the line between looking stylish and looking like a child in a school uniform. Try toughing it up a bit with boots and bold accessories.
• Most importantly, just go for it! Be creative and see what works for you.

I had seen Jamie in class every now and then, since we are the same major, and had often noticed her impeccable sense of style. How would you describe your sense of style? “Well it really changes with the day… clean, I guess? Very put-together. I like to look nice.”

Why did you choose this particular outfit? “The jacket because of all the rain, and then this is my new favorite dress, it’s only the second time I’ve worn it! It has a really cool back cut-out.”

What fashion advice would you give to other students looking to improve their style? “No sweats! Haha. What you wear doesn’t necessarily have to be trendy, but stuff that you’re comfortable in, and don’t look like you just woke up. Be yourself.”

What are you favorite trends right now? “Collared shirts, buttoned up – they’re everywhere. Especially the Peter Pan collar, like the one on my dress! I also really like the high-low hemline of dresses or skirts where they are longer in the back than the front. That’s gonna be all over my spring wardrobe!”

Who are your favorite designers? “Betsey Johnson, Vivienne Westwood, and Anna Sui.”

What do you like to do for fun? “Well, if I have time, reading. And, of course, listening to music, hanging out with friends… We tend to play a lot of board games.  This is only if I have all my homework done! I also like to sew to get my mind off things and relax.”

If you could raid anyone’s closet, who would it be and why? “Anyone?! Hmm… Alexa Chung!”

Elements of Jamie’s Outfit

1. Large Frames and Pink Bow

Jamie pulls off the large-framed look of her glasses with shiny, sleek hair and an eye-catching bow. When wearing large frames, it’s a good idea to keep the rest of your look minimal to avoid overpowering them. Also seen here is the front view of her dress and its lovely Peter Pan collar – a huge trend popping up all over the runways.

2. Navy Print Dress

This lightweight dress is really unexpected for a winter outfit, which makes it that much more exciting! The white all-over horse print is really cute, and the interesting back cut out is so unique – have you ever seen a dress like that? This dress is perfect for layering in winter, as Jamie did here (though she took off the layers for our detail shots), and wearing by itself into summer.

3. Black Lace-Up Boots

Basic black lace-up boots can add an edge to any outfit. Here, Jamie pairs hers with black tights and knee-length socks to keep her legs warm while staying stylish. I have a similar pair that I love to wear with cozy black leg warmers over skinny jeans. It’s very fun to wear them with something feminine like Jamie’s dress or anything with ruffles and lace.

Whether you’re going out with your significant other or celebrating your singleness with a bunch of your girlfriends, with these great outfits, you’ll be ready to dress your best for February 14th.

Outfit #1: Fancy Date! (Total $96.80)

Though I titled it “Fancy Date,” this outfit is not only for those who have a special someone to spend Valentine’s Day with, but also for those who just like dressing up!

I started with a Valentine’s classic – a LRD (little red dress). Red is a bold color, but the length of this dress and its sleeveless design allows it to remain classic. I decided to pair it with bold red shoes (come on, it is Valentine’s Day) for some extra oomph. Because the red color scheme is the main focus of this outfit, don’t go overboard with the accessories. A simple leather clutch and some pearl bracelets are the perfect choices to keep this outfit looking classy.

Outfit #2: Casual Valentine (Total: $99.47)

This season, the pink blazer is taking the fashion scene by storm. And what better time to wear a pink blazer than on Valentine’s Day? Black pants and shoes balance out the popping pink blazer on top. As for the accessories, I always love gold rings and jewelry to class up a bold ensemble.

Outfit #3: Single and Ready to Mingle! (Total: $99.08)

Who says that Valentine’s Day is just for couples? If you’re unattached, a great way to celebrate this holiday is to spend time with your girlfriends and go out declaring your singleness!

And what better way to declare that you’re on the prowl than by rocking a cheetah printed blazer? As with the pink blazer above, any printed blazer already draws lots of focus, so keep everything else simple. One of my favorite trends this year is the pleated skirt (and this skirt is high waisted!). The color, a rich maroon, is perfect for Valentine’s Day. To match the blazer, I’ve paired this outfit with some silver bracelets and grey heels with a hint of sparkle.

A few years ago, Disney and Pixar teamed up to create one of their most beloved films of all time, taking audiences under the sea and into the lives of loveable, reef-dwelling critters.

For those of you who haven’t seen it, Finding Nemo is a heartwarming story about an adventurous little clown fish named Nemo who finds himself in a bit of a tussle after being taken from his home in the ocean and put in an aquarium in a dentist’s office. His overprotective but caring dad Marlin sets out to find him with the help of another fish named Dory, who unfortunately suffers from short-term memory loss. This charming little fish tale is a favorite of young and old alike and is also perfect to use as a source of inspiration for your own outfits!

Capture Nemo’s bright signature stripes in this look! Wear a coral and cream striped cardigan over a neutral color tank with skinny jeans. Slip on a pair of colorful sandals and add flower studs to complete the ensemble.
