Today’s Saint: Blessed Anna Maria Taigi

My favorite saint’s feast day is today: Blessed Anna Maria Tagi.

Blessed Anna Maria Taigi was born in Siena on May 29, 1769 and baptized the following day. Because of financial difficulties, her parents, Louis Giannetti and Mary Masi, moved to Rome when Anna Maria was six years old.

In the Eternal City, Anna Maria attended the school conducted by the Flippini Sisters for two years. Following her schooling, she worked at various occupations–even that of a maid–to bring financial assistance to her parents.

The text of the preamble, with the modifications proposed by Fellay, and signed by him as Superior of the Society of Saint Pius X, will be presented to Benedict XVI, who, on the day following his 85th birthday and on the even of the seventh anniversary of his election, receives a positive response from the Lefebvrists. A response long expected and desired by him, who, in the next few weeks, will put an end to the wound opened in 1988 with the illegitimate episcopal ordinations celebrated by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre.

We will meditate on the touching recital of the disciples of Emmaus, contained in the gospel of the day, and we shall see: first, what, in this circumstance, were their faults and their virtues; second, what the great goodness of Christ was towards them. We will then make the resolution: first, to keep ourselves united in Jesus Christ by recollection, and to be docile to the inspirations of His grace; second, to watch over our conversation in order not to allow a word worthy of reproach to escape our lips. Our spiritual nosegay shall be the words of the apostles: "Was not our Heart burning within us whilst Jesus spoke in the way, and opened to us the Scriptures?" (Luke 24:32)

This fresco (below), by Giotto di Bondone, is from the Life of Christ series at the Arena Chapel (Cappella Scrovegni) in Padua, Italy. Giotto created it between 1304-06.

In this scene (number 28 in the series), Judas (who is holding a money bag) has made a deal with the religious leaders to betray his friend, Jesus.
