Girls Varsity Volleyball Team — Division V CIF Champions!  Way to Go!  The Girl’s Varsity Volleyball team made school history by clinching the CIF Division V Championship at Cuesta against league competitor Coastal Christian. The gym was packed with fan that came to cheer the Lady Broncos to victory.

Congratulations to Suzette Morrow, she has been selected as a finalist for Region 8 Educator of the year by the California League of High Schools.

Of course we are so proud!! Just another example of how  spectacular our teachers are!!

SLMS students are gearing up for Battle of the Books which will take place in early April.  America’s Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program where students are given a list of book titles to read during the year.  The titles are written by award winning authors and have been selected by educators across the country.   After reading the books students form teams and come together to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The competitions are similar in style to the TV series Family Feud or Whiz Kids styles of competition. The list of books this year include:

Hatchet, The River, The Lightning Thief, A Solitary Blue, Out of the Dust, The Teacher’s Funeral, Missing May, Black Star, Bright Moon, Bridge to Terabithia, House of the Scorpion, and Hope was Here.

Students have to at least read 3 of the titles on the list to be on the team. Encourage your child to read a book from the selection and to be part of the team!  Not only does it get them reading quality literature it gets them talking about books.

This orientation is designed to help you and your student make an easy transition to high school.

Topics to be covered include:

School policies, CUHS graduation requirements,

course offerings, clubs and activities,

upcoming Freshman Orientation opportunities, etc.

The Coast Union High School Guidance Department is offering a summer orientation for incoming freshman.  This is a free, voluntary orientation designed to help your student get acquainted with high school.  Some important topics that will be covered include: four year planning, CUHS and University graduation requirements, rules and regulations of CUHS, decision making, time management, organizational skills, college planning, how to operate your locker, the bell schedule, etc.

The workshop will be June 15, 2012 from 9:00am – 11:30 am.  There will be no bus transportation and the orientation is strictly voluntarily.  You must sign-up to attend so materials can be ordered.  Please return the bottom portion of this letter to CUHS attention Cheryl Seay.  Deadline to sign-up is May 18, 2012.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Seay.
