PTT Chemical acquires 50% stake in NatureWorks, the World Leading Bioplastics Producer

Thailand’s largest chemical producer, PTT Chemical Public Company Limited (PTT Chemical) is investing US$150 million to acquire half of NatureWorks, the world's only manufacturer of polylactic acid (PLA). PTT plans to co- invest in NatureWorks' $200 million second PLA plant to be located in Thailand. With sugar or cassava as the raw material the plant will commence commercial production by 2015.

This is a significant investment by a leading chemical company to continue its aggressive growth by expanding its capacity to meet global demand for bio-based products. According to Marc Verbruggen, President and CEO of NatureWorks the company selected PTT Chemical as its partner and Thailand as its second production base because it sees growth in the bioplastic industry shifting to Asia.

Bio-based chemicals capacities to proliferate substantially to 140% by 2016.

A report recently completed by Lux Research found that the bio-based chemicals industry has reached a tipping point, with capacity expected to double in market potential to $19.7 billion in 2016 as global manufacturing capacity increases by 140 percent. The report data yielded that the global capacity for 17 major bio-based materials dramatically increased to 3.8 million tons in 2011. Over the next five years, capacity is expected to rise by 9.2 million tons. By 2016 consolidation is anticipated within bio-based materials manufacturing sector as leaders buy up technologies and access to feedstock.

Algae.Tec, Lufthansa inks deal to use algae for aviation biofuel

German airline carrier Lufthansa and Australia biofuels company Algae.Tec have signed a milestone agreement where algae-based jet fuel will be trialled by the German airliner. Algae.Tec will produce fuel for evaluation as a sustainable source of aviation fuel at its bioreactors. In July 2011, Lufthansa launched a six-month biofuel trial on regular scheduled flights flying on a 50/50 mix of biosynthetic kerosene and regular fuel.

Leatherhead cites category overlap as 'overriding' soft drinks trend

In a recently published research report by Leatherhead Food Research, 'New Directions in the Global Soft Drinks Market', overriding trend is becoming apparent in the world’s soft drinks market with the increasing overlap between sectors.

Leatherhead noted that the global soft drinks industry was worth $447bn in 2010, and will continue to rise in the next few years. Due to the European Debt Crisis consumer spending is modest making cheaper products in demand than higher valued sports and energy drinks. Many colas are now occupying a similar position to energy drinks, while some functional bottled waters are actively competing against sports drinks. ONGC in talks with ConocoPhillips for deep sea oil, shale gas exploration

Indian state-run ONGC Ltd is in early-stage talks on possible tie up with ConocoPhillips, US energy major for the exploration deepwater and shale gas blocks in India.

Reports also suggest that under the proposed deal, ONGC had offered 19 of its deepwater oil and gas exploration blocks in the Krishna Godavari basin along with other offshore basins including Cauvery, Mahanadi and the Andaman and Nicobar basins to ConocoPhillips for joint exploration. The tie-up will also look at co-operation in onshore shale gas opportunities in India, North America and elsewhere in the world.

UK’s RWE npower world’s largest wood pellet-based biomass power to start operations this month

RWE npower is all set to start commercial operations at UK’s biggest biomass power station at Tilbury. The third of three units at the 750-megawatt (MW) power plant will start producing power and will be commercially operational by the end of January.

According to Dan Meredith, Corporate Public Relations Manager for RWE npower, at full capacity the plant will use approximately 2.5 million tons of wood pellets by the time the plant switches from coal to only biomass. This switch would account for 10% of renewable energy output for the U.K. going into 2012.

De derde Biomass Trade and Power Summit in februari te Brussel!

Biomassa (houtpellets, houtsnippers en agrarische residuen) draagt voor meer dan de helft bij in de productie van hernieuwbare energie als een schone, veilige en competitieve energiebron in de EU. Bayer aiming for rapid growth in China

Bayer MaterialScience AG, an arm of the German pharmaceutical and chemical producer Bayer AG, outlined plans to invest more in China to strengthen its position in the world’s largest single polycarbonates market.

China is the biggest single market for polycarbonates, consuming one-third of global production and is strategically important market for Bayer MaterialScience. The headquarters of Bayer's Polycarbonate unit was relocated from Leverkusen (Germany) to Shanghai in July 2011. In November 2011, world's first new technology of 250000 tons/year TDI device built in Shanghai has been put into operation. The giant German chemical and petrochemical developer/manufacturer also announced in Dec 2011 its plans to invest 2.1 billion Euros in a new Polycarbonate plant in Shanghai, China.

Petrolimex, Daelim in talks over $4.8bln Vietnam refinery

South Korea’s Daelim Industrial Company has signed a MOU with Vietnam’s Petrolimex to build a multi-billion dollar mega oil refinery and petrochemical project with total production capacity of 10 million tonnes per year starting construction by 2014-2015. The refinery is anticipated to be built in the central province of Khanh Hoa and is set to be one of the largest oil refinery and petrochemical projects in Vietnam. This investment could make South Koreas Daelim the first foreign investor in the project worth up to $4.8 billion.

Vietnam’s E & P scene is one of the most developed in South East Asia showing promising potentials. As indicated, there is a need for future investments in both upstream and downstream production in order to tap the country’s resources effectively. Myanmar awards onshore oil and gas blocks - biggest energy Tender in years

Burma has awarded 10 onshore oil and gas blocks to eight companies in its biggest energy tenders in years , according to a report. The blocks were awarded mostly to Asian companies, including Malaysia's Petronas , Thailand's PTT Exploration and Production and Jubilant Energy, India.

The positive developments currently taking place as Myanmar is precisely what CMT’s MOGP (Myanmar Oil, Gas & Power) summit on 27-28 Mar, 2012 aims to unveil. Prof. Karl Leo and team awarded German Future Award for Innovation and Technology by the German Federal President Christian Wulff

Together with Dr. Jan Blochwitz-Nimoth (Novaled AG) and Dr. Martin Pfeiffer (Heliatek GmbH), Prof. Karl Leo, Director of Institute for Applied Photophysics (IAPP) has won the German Future Prize of the Federal President for Technology and Innovation honor and great recognition of their work. The award was presented by Federal President Christian Wulff at an award ceremony in Berlin, Germany. The team received the prize for remarkable innovations in the field of Organic Electronics for their project "Organic Electronics — More Light and Energy from Thin Layers of Molecules" in December 2011.

Nest Fortune to Invest $6 Million in Cassava Industry

Nest Fortune Limited, a Hong Kong-based cassava-processing company, has invested US$6 million to establish a cassava-processing plant in Indramayu, West Java. Amsterdam gearing up for Biomass Boom

The increased focus on renewable energy and new Dutch government proposals that will see the use of some biomass mandatory in the country’s coal-fired power stations by 2022 is expected to lead to a boom in biomass traffic in Dutch ports such as Amsterdam. Currently, Dutch ports handle around 1.5million tonnes of biomass annually, but due to the forecast growing demand for the alternative energy source in North European countries, the figure is expected to increase to about 13.5million tonnes by 2020.

The MD of the Commercial Department of Port of Amsterdam, Koen Overtoom, estimated that by 2020, The Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia and the UK will require 15Million tones of biomass a year. As a result, the port of Amsterdam will acquire a significant market share in the north-west European market for biomass transhipment, said Overtoom.

Chinese Aromatics markets to face oversupply

CNOOC Oil & Petrochemicals’ huge aromatics facility at Huizhou, Guangdong province is anticipated to resume operations. With an increase in supply, the spot prices of benzene and mixed xylenes in the Chinese domestic market are set to weaken. The facility is the country's second biggest aromatics plant and is able to produce 350,000 tonnes/year of benzene, 220,000 tonnes/year of toluene as well as 900,000 tonnes/year of MX.

The company is also expected to resume operations of its 850,000 tonnes/year paraxylene (PX) plant at the site. In case of a delay in restarting the operations at the PX plant, the domestic Chinese market will have an additional supply of 20,000-30,000 tonnes of isomer-xylenes available for spot sales from the company.

CNOOC Shell Petrochemicals has been procuring benzene from the Chinese domestic spot market during the shutdown, but these purchases will no longer support benzene prices when the facility restarts. In response to the restart, CNOOC has cancelled plans to buy from the spot market.

Demand from the downstream styrene sector is also expected to weaken because of a turnaround at Jiangsu Leasty’s 400,000 tonne/year styrene plant in November.

Above developments suggest that the Asian aromatics market is and will continue to be volatile and unpredictable. France based APPE increases RPET output by 40%

Pre-form and PET bottle manufacturer APPE operates a dedicated recycling plant in Beaune, France, where it is investing €10m to increase food-grade RPET output by 40% from 25,000 to 35,000 tonnes. Frédéric Blanchard, plant manager at the Beaune site commented that with raw material prices increasing and the political agenda across Europe promoting sustainability, demand for recycled PET continues to grow making the latest expansion very significant.

Demand for PET is largely driven by unparalleled growth of carbonated soft drinks and bottled water industries in the Europe. AzMeCo facility in Azerbaijan to export 90% methanol

The construction of methanol plant in Azerbaijan is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Nizami Piriyev, President of AzMeCo (Azerbaijan Methanol Company) noted that the 90% of plant’s output will be directed for export, but there are plans to use methanol as raw material for several new businesses to promote the use of methanol in the country. The overall value of the project is estimated to be over $400 million. Production is scheduled to begin in April and reach its full capacity of 560,000 tons in June 2012. Reportedly, Azerbaijan’s methanol production will increase by 720,000 tons per year. AzMeCo is the sole methanol plant in Azerbaijan and also the only one in the South Caucasus and Central Asia.

Arkema to acquire two bio-based Chinese companies

France’s leading chemicals producer, Arkema recently announced investment of $365 million to acquire Chinese companies Hipro Polymers, a fast-expanding producer of biosourced nylon 10.10, and Casda Biomaterials, world leader in sebacic acid derived from castor oil. This acquisition will boost Arkema's position in China. The project is subject to approval by the Chinese authorities and the operation is anticipated to be finalized in early 2012. Thus, with expanding demand for bio-based products, Asia is witnessing investments and expansions.

Badger Gets Contract with LG Chem

Badger Licensing LLC, headquartered in Cambridge reported the receipt of orders by LG Chem to license its proprietary technology for a 200,000 metric tons per annum cumene plant plus a 120,000 metric tons per annum bisphenol A (BPA) plant in Daesan, South Korea. LG's new facilities are scheduled for completion and startup in 2012. LG operates one cumene plant and two BPA plants at their Yeosu site, all licensed by Badger.

Cumene, a precursor to the production of phenol, bisphenol A and polycarbonate, has seen strong worldwide growth recently, particularly in China. PetroChina strikes huge Shale Gas Reserves

PetroChina has discovered shale gas reserves in the Sichuan province of China, as reported by the Financial Times on 7 Dec, 2011. The exact size of the potential reserves is not yet known.

State-owned China National Petroleum Corp has drilled about 20 wells, with each able to produce over 10,000 cubic meters of gas per day, a company official confirmed. These developments could drastically boost China's domestic supplies of natural gas and relieve pressure for increased imports to meet soaring energy demand. China has so far not launched commercial shale gas operations but is partnering with Sinopec, BP, Chevron , Royal Dutch Shell and other foreign companies seeking to improve its own technology.

In line with the above developments, China is poised to become the world’s largest producer of shale gas. Venezuela’s Pequiven to triple resin output

Venezuelan state-run petrochemical producer Pequiven plans to triple its resin production owing to considerable increase in consumption for the region. Saul Ameliach, Pequiven's president said that the producer will add resin capacity at its three manufacturing facilities situated in Venezuela and intends to start producing about 1.86 million tonnes from 694,000 tonnes/year by 2016. The facilities are engaged in production of polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene. Venezuela’s resin demand has risen approximately 12% per year since 2005. To meet the demand Venezuela has to import 88,000 tonnes of resin. Braskem and Pequiven's PP joint venture in Paraguana is currently underway with a minimum capacity of 300,000 tonnes/year and is expected to efficiently meet dynamic market needs.

Recent market report by Euromonitor International states that the hair care market in the KSA and UAE combined is expected to be worth a whopping $524.2 million in 2012 and reach $566 million by 2014! The rapid growth in the photovoltaic industry has led to the development and introduction of numerous new materials for PV applications. In particular the increase demand for PV backsheets, has reached an all time high along with the pressure to offer more cost effective and better performance solutions.

Vietnam to invest Billions on Power Projects

Multi-billion dollar power projects are anticipated to be a shining light in Vietnam’s investment picture. To solve its frequent power outages, Vietnam plans to raise $48.8 billion for power plants and transmission projects in 2011-2020 . As reported, National Power Transmission Corp will develop 300 and 350 transmission projects over the next 5 years in Vietnam with an estimated capital investment of US$1 billion per year.

Taiwan's CPDC to invest $989 mil to build phenol-acetone plant in east China

Taiwan's China Petrochemical Development Corp( CPDC) plans to invest T$30 billion ($989 million) to build a phenol-acetone plant in east China's Jiangsu province. The new plant is expected to begin operations two years after the approval from the authorities to produce phenol and other products such as acetone. Phenol is a feedstock used in the production of caprolactam and CPDC is one of the world's top five caprolactam producers. Investing in phenol, a material used in the production of caprolactam, would facilitate vertical integration of the company’s operations and secure access to the raw material, Chairman Sheng Ching-jing remarked.

Africa's Rise Prompts Heavy Cement Spending

To meet growing construction demands in African continent, at least 9 new cement plants are being set up in the coming few years costing billions of dollars.

Some of the noteworthy ones are: Zurich-based Holcim Group, Paris-based Lafarge, Lafarge Cement Wapco Nigeria and three other Lafarge subsidiaries, including Nigeria-based Ashaka Cement , Morocco-based Lafarge Zimbabwe and Lafarge Maroc, Dangote , Lucky Cement, Athi River Mining are building additional plants that will increase the largest global cement maker's capacity in the coming years.

Cassava exports jump 94%

Cambodia has seen an increase in cassava exports in the first nine months of this year. 226,500 tons of fresh cassava and dried chips were exported mainly to Thailand and Vietnam representing 94 percent rise from 116,568 tons in the same period last year, according to the statistics of the Commerce Ministry. Reportedly, Chinese agricultural firm China National Food Industry (Group) Corp recently signed an agreement with local company Ly Ye Rubber Co Ltd to purchase 1 million tonnes of dry cassava to export back to China. Cassava farming is quickly expanding due to growing demand from international markets as well.

Hillary Clinton's November 30-December 2 , 2011 visit - the first by a U.S. Secretary of State in 50 years has shifted the investment mindset for Myanmar to achieve ‘frontier market’ status. Investors are cautiously observing and following the positive developments taking place in Myanmar. While some multinational companies have expressed interest in its natural gas reserves, some are skeptical. Still, hopes are high that Clinton's visit may clear the way for future progress with the lifting of US sanctions. PET project to push "world class production"

Octal Petrochemicals in Oman, a global leader in production of packaging material has plans to invest $200m for the development of two PET production sites in 10 hectares at Salalah Free Zone . The facility will start production from May 2012, which will add an additional 527,000 tons of PET bottle grade resin to reach 927,000 tons. The manufacturing plant will comprise of two production lines with a capacity of 750 metric tons per day.

OCTAL's Chairman Sheikh Saad Suhail Bahwan said that additional volumes of resin production will spur the growth of the packaging industry and will encourage markets to migrate from less efficient materials to PET as the preferred clear rigid polymer. This plastic packaging venture will establish OCTAL as a recognized leader in PET and the industry and will place Oman on the world map as a manufacturing and distribution haven. He commented that in less than two decades, global PET bottle sales have dramatically increased from one million tons to more than fifteen million tons. The company aims to meet the increasing demand of PET packaging solutions in European, American and Asian markets and has established a foothold in the lucrative plastic packaging market.

Tolaram of Singapore Plans Biomass Power, Heat Plant in Estonia

Singapore’s Tolaram Group plans to build a heat and power plant in Kehra, northern Estonia estimated to cost 30 million euros ($41 million). The annual capacity of the plant is planned at 108 gigawatt-hours of thermal energy and 63 GWh of electric energy. The aim is to launch the plant by the end of 2014, commented Sonny Aswani, the company’s managing director. Tolaram is preparing the project in cooperation with Estonia's state-owned energy group Eesti Energia and will be finalizing investment decisions in 2012.The energy produced by the cogeneration plant will be used by Horizon Pulp and Paper also owned by Tolaram.

As fuel stock for power and heat, biomass investment has been hailed to be more lucrative than any other renewable - offering higher yields, earlier returns and greater potential for economies of scale. Rhodia, Sibur to Target $500 Million Russia Surfactant Market

The French Chemical holding, Rhodia and Russian leading petrochemicals giant, Sibur have announced a joint venture to develop specialty surfactants for the CIS market. This 50:50 joint venture is expected to site local production in Russia at Dzerzhinsk, 400km east of Moscow, close to Sibur’s petrochemicals operations and is expected to start production in 2013.

The surfactants sector in the CIS region is growing at over 6% a year, fuelled in part by the evolution of consumer demand for more sophisticated and segmented products such as shampoos, conditioners and shower gels. Sibur will contribute its raw materials, production and logistics capabilities to the venture. Rhodia, meanwhile, will bring in its expertise in surfactant technologies, formulations and market applications and a customer network, including global key accounts present in the region.

Bio-Based True Green Solar Energy

California based BioSolar has developed plant-derived polymers that could replace the petroleum-based plastics used in the production of the majority of photovoltaic (PV) cells and modules. By removing petroleum from solar cells, BioSolar makes solar energy a true green source of energy. This is a novel technology to produce bio-based materials from renewable plant sources that will reduce the cost of PV solar panels. The highly efficient protective Biobacksheet for solar power panels is made from bio-based polyamide resin derived from Castor Beans and a special form of recyclable mineral additive that is environmentally safe, cost effective and durable.

Lee, President and CEO of BioSolar said that BioSolar is committed to continued development and commercialization of durable bio-based PV panel components from renewable sources that equals or exceeds the performance of existing products while reducing the cost of manufacturing PV modules

SolOptics’ Lens Design improves PV Energy Harvest - Can the front glass of a PV panel be replaced by a polymer?

SolOptics, a division of Genie Lens Technologies, revealed a significant milestone in its lens design that can significantly improve module efficiency and power harvest. CEO of Genie, Seth Weiss also claimed that process production cost is less than one cent per watt. These big improvements in solar panel performance come from texturing process that improves “lightray management” and can be used on polymer or glass. Weiss suggested that eventually textured polymer could replace the glass front cover sheet on a PV module, yielding improved performance at a lower weight and a reduced balance-of-system cost.

As shown above, it is quite clear that the PV industry is seeing a meaningful shift towards technology that is compatible with polymers to enhance module efficiency. Turkey to flip from PET importer to exporter

A new PET plant was announced end of October 2011, by Koksan PET and Plastic Packaging Industry (KOKSAN) with two planned PET lines with the combined capacity of 432,000 ns/year that will boost its own PET preform exports to 200,000 tons/year .The plant is located in Gaziantep and is anticipated to be ready in the third quarter of 2012 . The growing domestic consumption has limited Turkey’s export availability. However the widespread investments that are underway will make the region a significant net exporter. The strong demand growth is supplemented by robust export markets. The company is said to meet Turkey’s entire water bottle chips and film sector chips demand through the new plant and plans to supply PET chips to the polyester synthetic yarn industry.

With a new investment in PET planned in Turkey, the country is set for major changes in its trade flow. Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc. Signs MoU With UPC Technology Corp, Creats Joint Venture For Phenolic Resins Production in China

Momentive Specialty Chemicals announced that it has entered into a MOU agreement with UPC Technology to establish a joint venture (JV) company. Under the terms of the agreement, the JV company will build the first manufacturing facility in Zhenjiang, China and produce various types of specialty resole and novolac phenolic resins. These resins are traded under Durite, Bakelite and other brand names. They are used in a number of applications such as abrasives, refractories and friction. The plant construction is expected to begin in late 2011 and will be commissioned at the year end of 2012.

The partnership with UPC Technology will expand the capabilities of Momentive’s Specialty Phenolics unit and will help meet the increasing demand of Chinese customers, attributed to the rapid growth of consumer and automotive sectors in China.

The Zhejiang JV project falls in line with Versatic acids plant construction that is ongoing in China and new Cardura monomers manufacturing plant in Onsan, Korea. Momentive has planned to continue its investment in China to enhance

China’s demand for Phenol, acetone and their respective derivatives has been growing at a fast pace and . will continue to grow in the coming years. Sarinah plans cassava joint venture with South Korea

Indonesian State-owned company PT Sarinah has signed an agreement to set up a Cassava processing facility with Korean investors with the total investment of US$90 million. The company will purchase cassava from farmers and export it for cattle fodder to China and South Korea. According to its President Director Mr Jimmi Gani , export to China will initially be 5,000 tons per month, and later could be boosted to over 10,000 tons .

Above is just one of many similar news that points to increasing Chinese demand for Cassava, which in turn has led to a surge in cassava exports and rapid growth in the Starch Industry in China. All because, apart from Corn starch, Cassava modified starch is widely used in China for papermaking, food processing and textile industry.

Dangote’s US $350 Million Congo Cement Plant Plans Production 2014

On Oct 6 , 2011 , the Dangote Group signed an agreement with the Republic of Congo to establish a 350 million dollars cement plant in Brazzaville. Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, signed on behalf of his company while Mr Pierre Moussa, Congolese Minister of Planning, Economy, Integration and Coordinator of the Economic Pole signed on behalf of his government.

Mr Dangote said that they will invest 350 million dollars in the construction of a fully integrated cement factory with an installed capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes per year within the next three years. The factory would be located in the territory of the administrative district of Bouenza in the southern part of the Republic of Congo. Dangote has also recently announced the construction of cement plants in Gabon, Algeria, Tanzania, Cameroon, Ethiopia and Zambia, as the company taps into an African building boom.

South Africa is in the process of reshaping its future and is becoming a hot spot in the Cement industry . New CEPSA’s Chinese Plant to Produce Phenol and Acetone

China is the world's fastest growing market for phenol and acetone. Cepsa Quimica, the petrochemical unit of Spanish oil firm Cepsa launched the construction of a chemical plant in Shanghai with investment worth more than USD 200 million early October 2011. The new plant will position CEPSA Quimica as the second leading phenol and acetone producer worldwide. The plant is projected to initiate commercial production by 2014 and the unit will manufacture 0.25 million tonnes of phenol per year and 0.15 million tonnes of acetone per year. The investment is encouraged by the growing demand in China and the rapidly expanding market with economic and commercial opportunities.

UK incentives to boost companies generating electricity from Biomass – Drax expected to soar high!

As reported by Bloomberg, U.K. incentives are boosting biomass power. On 21 Oct, 2011 the Department for Energy and Climate Change has proposed doubling the tradable ROCs, or Renewables Obligation Certificates, given to enhanced biomass co-firing plants. The proposals, which will take effect in April 2013, or April 2014 aimed at ensuring the U.K. meets its European Union target of getting 15 percent of all energy for heat, power and transportation from renewable energy in 2020.

Inevitably, this would allow some of the thermal power plants, which have converted to biomass, to boost their production. Drax, owner of the UK’s biggest coal-fired power station, hopes by 2016 to use biomass for 50% of the output from its 2GW operation. Drax will increase its use of co-firing biomass thanks to the increased incentives commented Dorothy Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of Drax. She added that an additional uplift on the proposed level could further the opportunity for burning more biomass. It is now poised to source half its fuel from Biomass.She commented that is not surprising if biomass is going to become an increasingly important commodity and will eventually replace fossil fuels. Drax is expected to soar higher if high subsidies for enhancing co- firing are introduced.
