Prizes are awarded for the lowest scores on the day of event, but the top prizes are awarded for the teams that raise the most support for FCA. This year those prizes include a week vacation at the Inner Banks, NC (first) and Fort Walton Beach, Fl (second). In addition, individuals meeting the fund-raising goal will be awarded special prizes! The goal for each player is to raise $1000 for FCA. This can be accomplished several different ways. We have found that if you will send 50 letters asking for support that you will exceed this goal! Simply download the FCA Address Spreadsheet, send email it to us <a href="mailto:sheliasmith@fca.org">here</a> by August 1st along with your custom letter (optional) and we will mail your support letter to your friends, family, and business contacts. In addition, we will mail the contacts a Response Form and FCA Fact Sheet. You simply follow up the letter with a call or email! In the coming weeks we will be involved with three FCA camps, Beau Vincent Duerson will join our family, and I will be leaving my position as Area Director with FCA and joining the staff of First Alliance Church (my church) as a church planter. I have enjoyed and been blessed to serve God through FCA over the past 11 years. While not as a paid employee, I fully intend to continue serving through FCA–as a volunteer like you! I have been involved with FCA in some capacity as long as I have been a Christian. I love FCA, as much of my spiritual growth has come through this special ministry. I continue to appreciate the vision of FCA and most of all I cherish the relationships God’s given me through my involvement. I trust that those friendships will continue on into eternity! I couldn’t be happier to announce that one of those friends is going to be stepping into my role. Aaron Hogue, his wife Kelly, and their three children (Clay, Jenna, and Kate) will be moving here from Louisville so that Aaron can join staff July 1st. We will work together until September 1st, at which time I will move into my new role of FCA volunteer. <p>Aaron served as South Central FCA Director (Somerset) for four years before accepting a position as pastor of Pleasant View Baptist Church. For the last two years Aaron has lived in Louisville where he recently finished his degree at Southern Seminary. Aaron and I share a lot of the same passions and I couldn’t be happier that God has called him to Lexington. He is one of my best friends. Many of you know Aaron and those of you who don’t will be gaining a great new friend and teammate!</p> <p>As for my family, we are “going to the land that God will show us.” I will join the staff at First Alliance Church as a church planter September 1st. Sometime next fall our church will begin a new church that I will serve as pastor. Many of the details are unknown, but it does seem that the new church will be in the Lexington/Central Kentucky area and will actually look more like a network of small multiplying churches. Sound familiar? Certainly God has used FCA to shape a lot of what I believe about church and the role of church in fulfilling the Great Commission. In the process, I crossed paths with several other men that shared a desire to see God work through skateboarding in Kentucky as well. David Wu, Bruce Spence, Chris Wise (Chris Wise had even began a “Love Skate Outreach” in Nicholasville over a year ago in which he and his wife were making dinner for a dozen or so skaters each week at their home near the Lake Minga Skate Park.) and I began to talk about how God could use us to have an influence on the skate community.<br /><br />As we prayed and planned, we saw a lot of interest build in the idea of a skate camp during spring break. Two competing skate shops offered support and donated shirts and prizes. Brochures went out and registrations started coming in! We were thinking that if we had 20 skaters that would be a good start.<br /><br />On Monday, March 29th 37 skaters showed up for the first ever FCA Skate Tour/Camp. Most campers were scholarshipped by individuals that they had never met. One skater was from Michigan and was a Guinness Book of World Records holder for the most consecutive kick-flips. One kid was a Muslim. Several kids were smokers and most were not involved with any church or had attended a Christian camp of any type.<br /><br />Each day we headed out to different skate parks. We traveled to Louisville’s “Extreme Park” as well as parks in Frankfort, Georgetown, Dry Ridge, Florence, and Southern Indiana. We all bonded as we skated together and as I leaned heavy on the kids for advice about skating. In the mornings and evenings, Chris, Bruce, David and I shared our stories with them. The love of Christ was so thick and tangible during camp chapel meetings that you could almost see it. During the final evening at camp, we challenged the campers to surrender their lives to Christ. Ten or so responded in faith, expressing a desire to begin a relationship with Christ!<br /><br />By then end of camp, much had transpired (unfortunately sleep did not). Injuries were few--one young man did break his ankle. Most had broken spirits and as a result tasted the abundant life Jesus offers. Strangely, even something about a “dragon” became one of the most referenced inside jokes among the campers.<br /><br />Chinese mythology teaches that the dragon symbolized the Emperors of China themselves whom they believed possessed unrivaled wisdom and power. Of course these “powerful” leaders are all dead. But at skate camp, campers came to know the all knowing and infinitely powerful God who conquered death itself and still uses things like a skateboard to let people know that he is real and loves them.<br /><br />I can’t thank all of you enough who helped make this camp possible. (UPDATE)<span style="font-style: italic;">I just got off the phone and I wanted to share with you all a really neat story. FCA at UK has been attempting to give the FCA Competitors Bible to every coach and athlete on campus. It has been amazing how this has been going. We have purchased, personalized, and have delivered (or in the process of delivering) Bibles to the Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Golf, and Tennis Teams. We also have given Bibles to the Gymnastics Team and I just received a call from one of their coaches. I listened to him enthusiastically explain to me how one of the girls on the team who received her very first Bible EVER from this project, attended church this past Sunday, committed her life to Jesus and was baptized!<br /><br />Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is living and active. I would encourage you to support it if you can and replicate it at your school if you so feel led! - Gavin</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">UK FCA’s “Big Blue Bible Drive”</span> </span><br />The University of Kentucky Fellowship of Christian Athletes, via God’s leading, is attempting their first ever “Big Blue Bible Drive.” It is our goal to give every athlete and coach at the University of Kentucky a copy of an FCA Bible. These Bibles are leather bound and contain lots of helps including a devotion, written by coaches and athletes, for each day of the year. In addition, the members of UK’s FCA hope to include in the Bibles distributed a personal note to each coach and athlete as well as highlights of a few of their favorite verses.<br /><br /><br />There are over 50<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://fcagear.com/mmFCA/Images/BB20090.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 213px; height: 213px;" src="http://fcagear.com/mmFCA/Images/BB20090.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>0 athletes and coaches at the university and the Bibles will cost our FCA group approximately $16 each. So, in order for this God-sized task to be completed, we are trusting that God will raise up others who would like to join us in this project! Perhaps you, your church group, or group of friends would like to buy a Bible for an athlete or coach, or perhaps enough for an entire team?
