I have added one more campaign promise to my list of promises, so that makes eleven.

The new promise is:

“I will not make political contributions to/nor accept contributions from, other candidates running for elected office in Missouri, thereby keeping it from looking as though I am buying political friends/favors.”

I think it speaks for itself, so I won’t give a long explanation. I just feel it looks bad when a candidate is making political contributions to people running for office that he might be working with, or who can potentially reward him in the future. Even if there’s not a specific quid pro quo arrangement, it still looks that way.

Yesterday, state senator Jeff Smith and state representative Steve Brown both resigned after pleading guilty to two felonies involving lying to federal officials over campaign activities during the 2004 election.

I only mention this because it is more “proof” to the people that all politicians are corrupt, and that they have reason to remain cynical.

When I hear this kind of news, I am not only disappointed as a voter, but possibly even more so as someone who is running for office. Why is that, you ask?

I am running on the campaign slogan “Character. Vision. Leadership.” To me it’s not a mere slogan. Voters are bombarded with stories of how their elected officials are betraying the public’s trust. We’re on a slippery slope where if voters don’t have an example of true character in politics, the cynicism will continue, and so too will the downward spiral. When voters become cynical, they become accepting of the corrupt and immoral behavior that they would usually rail against.

If you haven’t read my list of 10 campaign promises, please take the time to do that here. What you’ll notice is that I am refusing large contributions, all contributions from special interests, and I will not accept a government pension/per diem. Why is this?

I wanted to make it as clear as possible that I will serve the people, and not the party or special interests. But, the cynical voter won’t believe that I am as honest as I say I am, and will assume that I will benefit some other way from getting elected, or that I may make good promises, but will never keep them.

If you want real honesty, than I ask you to give me a chance, and vote for me for state representative on August 3, 2010 in the Democratic primary. Believe me, I am as tired as you are of having politicians falling into disgrace, and I pledge to you that I will not fall victim to the same fate.
