You’ve seen TED talks.

They’re awesome.

The slogan of TED is:

“Ideas worth spreading.”

What idea could be greater than the Gospel?

None.

So what do sermons have to do with TED talks?

The TED Talk Format

It’s the format.

TED talks are known for being dynamic, hard hitting and very memorable.

Why is that?

As my wife and I dug into several TED videos, it hit me: “Why aren’t sermons like this?”

I think it has more to do with the format than anything else, so I took a look at TED’s rules for speakers and here’s some food for thought:

No talk can exceed 18 minutes in length.

Speakers must tell a story or argue for an idea. They may not use the TED stage to sell products, promote themselves or businesses. Every talk’s content must be original and give credit where appropriate. Speakers cannot plagiarize or impersonate other persons, living or dead.

Speakers must be able to confirm the claims presented in every talk…

I can imagine Jesus’ parables falling within these rules, including that 18-minute mark. Where did we get the idea that we need more time to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ than Jesus Christ himself?

I’ve found that when I’m editing audio, video or writing, the more concise I can be, the tighter I can make an edit, the more powerful it becomes.

What if sermons were more like TED talks?

Phil Cook recently posted six different things that can hide or mask bad leadership.

These are the elements, these are the things that can buffer unhealthy leadership styles. If you are a real leader, you’re going to want to go through these and make sure you’re not letting any of these cover poor leadership.

Money

Resources

Bubble Cultures

Hyper-Loyalty

Nepotism

Politicking

Cooke covers each of these in detail and is worth a closer look. I’ve seen too many people held back by poor leadership and progress horribly stunted.

If you’re not making redundant backups, it also turns out you’re in good company. Take a look at some of these data loss fails:

Oh, snap!

For only about $20 (and a PS3 controller), you can rock your Android as a serious gaming device. I love it!

Best of all, the inventor of GameKlip is a really cool guy:

Ryan French is a student at the University of Washington is majoring in Applied Computational Math Science, but has always enjoyed tinkering and building things. As an elective, he took a computer aided design (CAD) class where he learned how to design parts in 3d. This enabled him to take on a project like the GameKlip™. He has worked as a programmer, web developer, 3d modeler, and photographer in the past.

I used to be a huge fan of the old hand written card, but it seems like more and more I’m too pressed for time to write that card. Or I forget about a friend’s birthday until 2 days before, run to Hallmark to score a semi-funny card…write all my sentimental birthday thoughts, go to the post office and buy a book of stamps even though I only need one (didn’t I just buy a book a month ago…wonder where that book is??) Then finally address the card and mail it…only to find out that the mail has already come for the day from my mailbox and it will just sit in there until tomorrow when it gets picked up at 4pm. And thus won’t make it to my friend in time.

I used jackcards.com for awhile and that was ok, but when my friends got the cards they said they knew I couldn’t have actually written them because the handwriting was too girly! So then I look like a fool and like I sent an e-card!

Now check this little service out for your iPad! Quite awesome!
