This is the continuation of my previous blog post about Plus.

It's a goal for us, of course, to have our users continue their use of Plus.

So we put on the Marketing hat and wondered if we could create a good call to action, which would stimulate our users to extend their Plus accounts.

The "marketing department" decided that from here on we would offer the user an extension bonus. These were the requirements:

The user is to receive an extension bonus offer.
The extension offer skal be offered at the time of the first Plus timeout warning, as part of the first warning mail (3 days before Plus timeout).
The extension offer is to be offered for 24 hours only (our call to action), starting at the moment the first timeout warning mail is sent to the user.
If the users extends the Plus account while the extension offer is active, the extension bonus is released to the user.
When the extension is released, the user is to receive an extra 14 days of Plus (on top of the 30 days bought by the user)

We could have chosen to extend our existing Plus saga, but that would have made it more complex. And we thought it would be a pity to add more complexity to something, that is pretty well defined and does, what it is supposed to.

So instead we added an extra saga, which represents the extension bonus offer time period. It is started by a TimeOutWaning and will hereafter react to any CustomerSetPreferred event, which is published during that period. If that happens, the extension bonus saga will issue the 14 extra days to the user.

I have mentioned Plus accounts on our experimental site www.miljoparkering.se a few times, but always in the context of other topics.

When I am in dialogue with clients and other architects and describe the Plus policy we use on www.miljoparkering.se, and how relatively easy it was to introduce on the site, I typically get very positive feedback. Some of it may come from my enthusiasm, as it is a pretty good example of how to use NServiceBus sagas in the modeling and the programming of such business rules.

So, I thought it might be a good idea to describe it here, so I can share the enthusiasm and experience:

Miljöparkering Plus allows users to access more features. A user receives Plus after signing up (30 day teaser), and then when they either invite new users or pay via SMS. Business rules regarding Plus are defined this way:

Plus is granted to the user, a value is stored via the domain model and an event is published (CustomerSetPreferredEvent). This initiates an instance of our Plus-saga.
3 days before the expiration date a warning is issued via email and SMS, which tells the user that Plus will expire soon and that the user should consider extending it.
1 day prior to the expiration date another warning is issued, this time only by mail.
Plus expires, the user is set to non-Plus.

If the user chooses to extend Plus, we add more days to the expiration date and publish a new CustomerSetPreferredEvent with a new expiration date (a property on the message indicates that it's an extension).

It would be a natural choice to try and solve this through development of one or more batch jobs, which would check if any of the defined dates have been passed and react appropriately. But what about when Plus is extended? Ok, maybe not so difficult, we just move the end date and calculate warning dates again, right? But what do we do when a batch job cannot run due to technical problems, especially if no-one notices it and it won't run for several days? Well, we can add some control values to keep state (in our domain model, right?), so that if the dates are passed and no reminders have been sent, then we react. But if not done right, we might potentially have a situation, where customers would end up being Plus indefinitely.

Ok ok, maybe these problems are somewhat artificial, but most of us know that if we would solve this through batch jobs, it would require some "hacking" around to make sure that the solution wouldn't have any gaps.

That is, if the first ID is X and a new CustomerSetPreferredEvent is received, we update the ID to Y, save it in the saga data and the timeouts we then create. When a timeout returns, we compare its ID with current ID in the saga data and the timeout is either handled or disregarded. Note here that the saga does not do anythig but publish events which are handled elsewhere within the same service / bounded context.

This is also the reason why we to some extent allow ourselves to be a little relaxed with constants, etc. As these decisions do not bleed into other services, we experiment with the type of properties and / or specific event types we want. The good thing about using NSerivceBus is furthermore that if the server is down or our NServiceBus worker is otherwise unable to perform its job, it will pick up where it left off because the timeouts are durable.

For close to three years now I have been building and supporting the Android app for Malmöfestivalen together with a team of talented developers from the Skåne region.

Sadly, earlier this year, I learned that those responsible for the festival were considering shutting down their public API. Four months later I received a message informing me that there would, in fact, most likely be no public API for 2013*. No API, no app – not community-driven app, at least.

This means that the Malmöfestivalen for Android project is shut down from now on and the app will not be released for 2013.**

It’s a good time to reflect a little on the time and effort used. Obviously, on a personal level, I thinks it’s sad that the app no longer will be available for the users and I hope that the Malmö festival will release a good, official replacement (and will remember to make it work under mobile network congestion). It’s been a part of my last three summers and it’s weird not starting up development of new features.

Supporting a (fairly) long tail of versions, making the app work fast under mobile network congestion and ensuring its operation during the festival meant a fair amount of time spent on this app – not crazy much, but still. I must admit that some of that time felt as a burden at times, especially when fixing a bug or two in the middle of the night. ;)

However, it did bring a lot of good things:

I wanted to learn about Android development and get a bit of hands on experience. Not that I had any wish to become an Android developer, but I wanted to know more about Android apps and learn new ideas.
From the 2nd year onward I open sourced the app, which changed my role to also being a coordinator of the project. Talented and experienced in Android developers joined (on CodePlex and later on Github) and helped optimize the code for handling more data and add more features. That was pretty awesome.
I got to work with Lars and Thomas, who, in addition to creating the Malmö festival web site, sponsored the API for Malmöfestivalen.
I got to work with copy writer Anna from Gatukontoret, who wrote a nice article about the app on www.malmofestivalen.se.
Amazingly, I received no less than 10 offers about Android development during the three years. I did, however, decline all of them, sticking to what is my primary area: design and development of SOA based systems.
The app turned out to be the most downloaded Android app for the Malmöfestival. It was fairly well received, 4 stars of 5. I also heard that it was the most stable one… :)

As you can see, I definitely feel it was worth the time and effort, for sure. The ending of this project leaves me time to figure out what to try out in a side project over the next year (suggestions? ping me on @christerdk), a decision that has still to come. Until then, I continue with Björn to do our free Miljöparkering talks (showcasing EDA, NServiceBus and more) and maintaining the mini side project NServiceBus for a Startup.

* Edit: In retrospect, this needs clarification. This is a conclusion on my behalf, based on an e-mail I received in which they stated that although an API be technically possible, they were, with reference to quality and lack of control over the user experience in the API based products, reluctant to release it to the public. If they were to do so, that would most likely mean a new API structure, not a continuation of the existing API. This combined with the fact that there still is no API exposed to the public are the reasons for my conclusion. Even if they were to release a new API within the next few weeks, the “window of opportunity” for following up on that has closed for me personally.

If all of these subtasks were to be processed together, it would have meant downloading from the web, updating the DB and doing some file I/O in one transaction. Optimizing a NServiceBus "batch job"

On the last project I was working as a consultant on we used NServiceBus throughout the system.

After some time in production we started to experience issues with the system. First a slow system, then transactional deadlocks on the db and loss of data when these deadlocks were automatically resolved by the db server.

I had the pleasure of being the one tasked with tracking down the culprit and resolve the issue. (No irony, I love tracking down issues… :))

Problem

Some of our NServiceBus endpoints were concerned with high level business tasks, others with more infrastructural tasks. It turned out that the issue could be tracked to a NServiceBus endpoint which had the task of continuously importing content from RSS feeds owned by our customers. That is, for each feed, create, update (yes, some feeds updated existing feed items) or delete items locally according to feed contents. Importing also meant downloading images referenced in the feed items. Each RSS feed import was represented with a saga instance, and used timeouts for initiating imports.

The logic was placed in a NServiceBus endpoint to be able to “interact” with the import. We wanted to be able to remotely control the import and make it possible for users to start the import, when needed.

The implementation was unfortunately much like what you would find in a typical batch job. It consisted of a message handler which contained calls to private methods, more or less like this:

It worked without problems in the beginning. But then the RSS import feature got popular (oh no! :), more feeds were added and they contained a lot more items. This was considered a light weight operation on the production DB, as we already saved hashes locally representing RSS item’s previously known state. That meant we didn’t need to traverse our object graph to discover potential changes for each item in the feed.

For each identified task, this message handler would then send a matching message to its own queue, either UpdateRSSItemMessage, RemoveRSSItemMessage or AddRSSItemMessage.

These messages would contain all information needed for their respective message handlers to perform their task (local item id, hashes, text content, image URLs)
Create new message handlers for UpdateRSSItemMessage, RemoveRSSItemMEssage and AddRSSItemMessage.

Each of these would perform their particular task on item level.
