We’re happy to present the second installment of Irish legend Billy Scurry’s latest HipHop/Funk Mix. There isin’t much more we can say about this DJ or the name he’s made for himself in Ireland and further afield over the years. Below is what we wrote for the first podcast from Billy a few months back:

Over the past 20 years Billy Scurry has become synonymous with the club and DJ scene in Ireland. Cited by many as the pioneer who brought real dance music to Ireland in the early to mid 90s, Billy’s roots are as much in Soul, Funk and HipHop as they are in Techno, House and Disco.

Legendary residencies in The Temple of Sound, Sides, The Kitchen and The Ormonde during the 1990s along with international gigs worldwide have seen Billy constantly develop his soulful sound

This juxtaposition of styles quickly propelled him to being the DJ of choice for promoters around the country. Legendary residencies in The Temple of Sound, Sides, The Kitchen and The Ormonde during the 1990s along with international gigs worldwide have seen Billy constantly develop his soulful sound.

Billy has graced the turntables at various ChoiceCuts events over the years and always gets a great reception so we’re extrememly happy to be able to present the first part of a 3 volume live mix of Soul, Funk and HipHop exclusively compiled from his extensive record collection for ChoiceCuts.

This is the second of T-Woc’s Cachaca Barrata mixes and is mostly picked from finds on his last trip to Rio. As T-Woc says himself, “Great thing about Rio is you’re never far from the beach, so its pretty easy to park the missus with a book and a beer or two on the sand and hit the stores. And the cariocas know their music, particularly the Bossa Nova, so there is loads of that on the tape”.

…cariocas know their music, particularly the Bossa Nova, so there is loads of that on [here]…

T-Woc is currently running the physical releases at the Alphabet Set, with a heavy autumn/winter schedule ahead, DJing/promoting bass heavy stuff every two months in a club called Wobble in the Twisted Pepper, Dublin, selecting with Rootical Soundystem, playing some nights with the B-Music guys in Thomas House, Dublin and production-wise is working on Delayed Responses part 3, some vocal tracks with African Simba & Solo Banton and a finally a new beat-tape, a follow up to Takin WithOut Consent.

A busy man. Props to Mick for hooking us up with this great blend of music…

Here’s the second Best Foot Forward podcast showcasing the skills of Colm Kenefick a.k.a. Colm K. After the great response to the first installment from ChoiceCuts’ DJ Rizm (available here) Colm K has hooked us up with this little springtime mix.

Not only a DJ, Colm has made a name for himself in Ireland and internationally as a producer. Colm, under the alias Red Hula Hoops, released an e.p. of remixes in 2007 which sold internationally and he’s currently working on a follow up for release soon. Solo material features collaborations with The Good People (Brooklyn NY), Tiffany Paige (LA) & many others as well constructing remixes of Lupe Fiasco, Nas and more…

You can catch Colm and Rizm DJing together as part of their BestFootForward clubnight in Dublin and Cork over the coming months (we’ll be posting some interesting news about that night on the site soon).

In the meantime take a listen to this mix to get an idea of how it goes down at the BestFootForward clubnight when Colm’s spinning:

There’s plenty in this mix you will recognise if you’ve been a regular or occasional visitor to our live shows

Daniel is well known in Poland and internationally for spinning funk, new grooves, mid 90’s hiphop, afrobeat, broken beat, dancefloor jazz, soul, neo-soul, the good stuff! And he has supported the likes of De La Soul, Guru, Rahzel, Tigerstyle, Ugly Duckling (the list goes on) and all acts we have had over to Irish shores at some time or another so no better man to be pushing out to the ChoiceCuts regulars.

Jared Boxx a.k.a. JBX of the world-famous ‘Big City Records’ record store in New York has hooked us up with one of his fine mixes. This one’s for the hiphop fans. Located in Manhatten at 521 E 12th St (between Avenues A and B in the east Village), Big City is well known amongst the cream of hiphop producers as well as your average vinyl junkie as a valuable source of unmined breaks and beats, latest releases and general vinyl goodness spanning disco, soul, funk and hiphop.

For deep flavours and samples galore Jared is the man

Jared is one of the east coast’s most consistent record dealers over the past 10 years honing his trade in New York’s well known ‘Sound Library’ before moving on to open his own boutique store in Alphabet City, Big City records.

For deep flavours and samples galore Jared is the man. Chances are some of the hiphop records you know and love came to life after Jared put some unsuspecting producer on to a lick, bassline or drum loop that could have stayed hidden if it wasn’t for this man’s dusty fingers and knowledge of records.

Check out this excellent HipHop remix podcast he’s made for the ChoiceCuts family. Let’s hope we can see him over this way soon for a DJ gig.

It’s really has been too long. Sometimes we get so stuck into putting on shows and promoting other DJs that we forget our own humble record collections that continue to grow in the background. So it’s with a sigh of ‘about time’ that we proudly post the first of many 30 minute podcasts from various members of the ChoiceCuts family.

plenty of the old sitting proudly beside the new

To kick things off Rizm comes correct with this nice mix to get you out of the dreary beginning-of-the-year blues and more in line with the summers-just-around-the-corner frame of mind. This is short, but oh-so-sweet with plenty of the old sitting proudly beside the new and glued together in Riz’s own subtle way.

Plenty more where this came from and Murphy aka DJ Scope will be next up to bat so keep your eyes glued to our podcast feed!

The J.Period tribute mixtape/compilation to Q-Tip has finally arrived. Here is the full part 1 of The [Abstract] Best (Mixtape). This one features appearances from the likes of Nas, Stevie Wonder, Queen Latifah, Blu, De La Soul, Consequence, Kid Cudi and many more…

In the mix are exclusives, rarities, collaborations and classics glued together in J’s inimitable style. Loads of people have been asking us to put this up but we thought we’d link to it and put you onto J Period’s excellent site instead. However, the downloads have become slow due to popularity so we are hosting it on our own site for now for faster download times for your good selves.

Don’t sleep on j.Period’s excellent website though and if you are more into the idea of having the mix as individual files rather than one enourmous MP3 then check these links but get ready to wait - they are sloooow:

To celebrate the fact that we have Q-Tip performing live in Dublin on Friday 13th March 2009 (in the Button Factory) our main man down south, Colm Kenefick, has hooked us up with this tightly produced and very, very smooth interpretation of Q-Tip’s first single off his new album ‘The Renaissance’.

Colm has played at various ChoiceCuts events over the years as well as putting out records, working with local and international artists and has a great reputation behind the 1s and 2s as well as behind the mixing console.

You can check out more of Colm’s music on his MySpace page

Beatheads, DJ’s, Mixtape Fans and people interested in the obscure please take note - regarded by many as the mixtape of the year, “I Spit On Your Grave” is Gaslamp at his best:

Caustic cloud creeps up from the cracks. This darkness chops tree trunks to stumps and smothers soft sounds in murderous mist. The bloodthirsty form rises, wrapping its tendrils around the throats of pop-minded punks. By dusting the dumb this murderer ushers in soaring sounds. The Gaslamp Killer slashes to save.

SLASH - The Gaslamp Killer slashes to save.

First spotted stalking the streets of San Diego this serial sound slayer has spread wide. Dues paid with sweat have paid off. From homemade crushed beat mixtapes to glossy magazine pages the Gaslamp Killer has never altered course. He brings the dirtiest and deepest dynamite into being with dedication and discipline.

THE HEAT - A GLK dj set is an experience in the ultra-unexpected

The Gaslamp Killer is a raw revolutionary who sets every moment on shatter. A GLK dj set is an experience in the ultra-unexpected. Wrecking the decks like Animal minus the soft Muppet facade, Gaslamp is a tornado of exploding hair and energy. His shaking head is the cap on a volcano bursting with passion for blasting. In these high heat moments he meshes international mystery music with the grimiest beats in existence. Gaslamp’s psychedelic stew shines supreme in dim chambers with big bass.

RAW - His explosive energy keeps electrified ears eager for more

The Gaslamp Killer master mixes have evolved into original music collaborations with his posse MHE and frequent vocal collaborator Sumach. Gaslamp’s progressive heat seeking sounds are being sought by beat freaks from every corner. His explosive energy keeps electrified ears eager for more and more x more and more. The Gaslamp Killer’s ruthless focus is on high. This murderer continues breeding brightness by evaporating boring beats.

We have Gaslamp Killer playing in Dublin with DJ Scope so if you dig this mix you can catch him live in Dublin behind the turntables on April 24th 2009 - more info here

Another Theophilus download for you all - this time in the form of an hour long treat called ‘This Charming Mixtape’ which is a follow-up to his JAM! mixtape that caused serious interest on the net a while back.

Hailing from a variety of places in New York City but now calling Brooklyn home, Theophilus London (who goes by his real name) is the result of musical genres mixing together and having a profound impact in a positive way. “My mom played KISS FM, 98.7FM, all day. So all I knew was the Ojay’s, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks, Luther Vandross, all those cats,” says the 21-year-old musical phenom.

More Prince than Tupac, and more art oriented than street, Theophilus has already started receiving recognition within the industry the New York’s emerging alternative music scene and endorsements from Rocksmith Clothing (he appeared in an online video for the streetwear brand), London has managed to tap into a fan base thirsting for music and style that not only defies conventions but re-imagines the landscape in an entirely different light. Not one to pay attention to detractors, Theophilus has already addressed those seeking to marginalize his music: “I think it’s more realer when you’re yourself. When you’re yourself and when they can’t put a label on you, then they’ll probably call you ‘hipster rap’, or ‘far left’, because they don’t know what it is,” he observes.

“More Prince than Tupac, and more art oriented than street”

“[This Charming Mixtape] is a soul record”, he says, “I want to take it back to different eras. Just an era that makes you feel good and makes you feel live”

Mary Anne Hobbs declared that Bullion’s music “literally stopped me in my tracks” and invited him straight in for a Radio 1 DJ mix and he can count Gilles Peterson, Benji B, legendary US DJ Jason Bentley of KCRW LA, Phil Asher and the Turntablelab crew amongst his many fans around the world.

His DJ gigs, mixes & remixes of the likes of Tricky and Osborne have established him as far more than a one-hit wonder: Bullion is a selector & producer with great taste, an individual, eclectic approach and a refined ear for what works on the dancefloor without resorting to the obvious or lazy classics.

If yu need convincing then check out this mix of unearthed germanic funk gems - some of you may be surprised to hear funk like this coming out of Germany but let this mix set you straight. The German’s must have funk in their blood because it’s seeping through this 60 minute mix of groovers, shakers and dirty dancefloor smashers.

Considered by many to be a founder of the mash-up movement, Z-Trip’s musical tastes are eclectic and his mixing style mirrors that eclecticism. His early independent releases have become highly sought after collectibles. Uneasy Listening, the collaboration with DJ P, was one of the first of its kind fusing classic 80s pop and disco with classic hiphpo breaks and the original records they sampled.

This is Z-Trip’s follow up to ‘The Obama Mix’ which had to have been the political musical podcast of 2008. Just when you thought politicaly-charged musical podcasts were few and far between in 2008 (were there any?) Z drops this follow up to celebrate Obama’s victory over John McCain.

This is a clever mix and one that captures the mood and sentiment of America and the world pretty succinctly : relief and hope for a new direction.

Recently, Shepard Fairey and Z-Trip threw some fundraisers for the Obama campaign. They called them “The Party for Change”. (If you don’t know who Shepard is—among many other things—he is the one responsible for the iconic image to the right that has become synonimous with the Obama campaign rally).

Z-Trip felt the fundraisers and what they stood for needed to be brought to a wider audience and no better way to reach that audience than through the web. So this mix was born out of that desire to spread the positive good word about Obama.

This podcast is seamless; it’s inspired use of vocal samples and politically charged music lends itself perfectly to the context of the mix - it’ll be interesting to listen to this in 4 years from now…
