For years the epicenter of Chicago’s underground party scene was on one block of Lake Street. Revolutionary Music’s Safe House was on the north side of the street and the illmeasures loft was on the south side. DJs, performers and party people from all over the world found their way to the now legendary illicit parties. Revolutionary Music and illmeasures have joined forces as the Lake Street Collective to bring that vibe back to venues around Chicago. On August 7th, 2009 we bring it to Chicago’s Darkroom (2210 W. El Circo Cheapo is the poor man’s Cirque du Soleil, with world class acrobats, jugglers, puppeteers, aerialists, clowns, side show freaks and more. Every month is a different show, and you never quite know what to expect other than a great time with fun people.

The show was designed to give emerging and professional, local and international circus artists a place to try new things out, take risks in a supportive environment and receive hi-quality professional footage of their act for promotional use. During a recession, the arts are often first to get the ax, so this show gives us incentive to keep working on innovative circus and variety arts.

Aloft is welcoming interested circus artists from all over to come share our stage. The main purpose of this show us purely one of self-interest. You see, good performance footage of a circus act is awfully hard to come by, so by having a cheap show we can get a fun supportive audience in to clap and cheer as we film our acts to use for promoting ourselves to agents and clients. You never know what you’ll get at the cabaret…you might see 5 silks acts from 5 different companies, or you might see a 6-year-old Russian trapeze artist, or an inner-city juggling superstar from the Chicago Youth Circus, or someone trying their act in front of an audience for the first time and asking for feedback, or someone who has done their act so many times they’re going to try it blindfolded this time.

This year’s Open Streets event will cover 8 miles of some of the most beautiful boulevards in Chicago, from 8.30am to 2pm on August 1st. New CAD resident artist and co-founder of mfchicago, a music, video and street art collective, will exhibit a collection of his video work and still photographic captures derived from his VJ experience from 2004-2009. The show titled “Capturing Motion” will be held from 6-10 PM on Friday, July 10th at the Chicago Art Department.

A VJ is a performance artist that manipulates video as an art form. Typically, VJ’s mix video live and in conjunction with electronic music at clubs, festivals and “illegal” underground parties called “raves”. Seth’s VJ work combines video found in the public domain, samples of uncommon film footage and video he shoots of objects and subjects of interest.

The Chicago Arts District hosts “2nd FRIDAYS Gallery Night”, the monthly opening receptions at the galleries and artists’ studios centered around South Halsted and 18th Streets in Chicago. The receptions begin at 6:00pm and run until 10:00pm.

The Chicago Underground Library celebrates “The Science of Obscurity”, an evening of new, unpublished, and in-progress works presented as science fair experiments. If you are a writer, publisher, bookmaker, or book-lover of any stripe who has recently finished writing a book, has published a book in the past year, or just feels like taking out some aggression on a publication of your choice, we invite you to celebrate by launching your work into space–or at least halfway down the block. Read a paragraph, then release! And while we’re busy launching texts outside, we’ll be dissecting the mysteries of the literary universe inside. We’ll cap the remarkable evening with the shredding and launch of your collective rejection letters. This event is free and for all ages.

A BARcamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. The name BARcamp was inspired as a complement to FOOcamp, a private tech gathering run by Tim OReilly.

Each person is encouraged to be a participant either by giving a presentation, or helping with the logistics of planning and running the event.

Its a community thing, so its open to all. My thoughts are that these types of people would enjoy it the most:
* hackers, coders, engineers, programmers, admins, and lowly architects
* designers, graphic artists, web monkeys, and artists interested in tech
* entrepreneurs, tech business guys, social media mavens, investors, sales guys lookin for a product
* professors, students (grad and under-grad), researchers, and academic types wanting to see whats going on in the start-up world
* Significant-Others brave enough (or crazy enough) to attend (be prepared to hear jargon and acronyms more than english).
