For years the epicenter of Chicago’s underground party scene was on one block of Lake Street. Revolutionary Music’s Safe House was on the north side of the street and the illmeasures loft was on the south side. DJs, performers and party people from all over the world found their way to the now legendary illicit parties. Revolutionary Music and illmeasures have joined forces as the Lake Street Collective to bring that vibe back to venues around Chicago. On August 7th, 2009 we bring it to Chicago’s Darkroom (2210 W. Chicago Ave.).

El Circo Cheapo Cabaret
Source: http://www.elcircocheapo.com
7-10pm | Free (RSVP req’d)

El Circo Cheapo is the poor man’s Cirque du Soleil, with world class acrobats, jugglers, puppeteers, aerialists, clowns, side show freaks and more. Every month is a different show, and you never quite know what to expect other than a great time with fun people.

The show was designed to give emerging and professional, local and international circus artists a place to try new things out, take risks in a supportive environment and receive hi-quality professional footage of their act for promotional use. During a recession, the arts are often first to get the ax, so this show gives us incentive to keep working on innovative circus and variety arts.

Aloft is welcoming interested circus artists from all over to come share our stage. The main purpose of this show us purely one of self-interest. You see, good performance footage of a circus act is awfully hard to come by, so by having a cheap show we can get a fun supportive audience in to clap and cheer as we film our acts to use for promoting ourselves to agents and clients. You never know what you’ll get at the cabaret…you might see 5 silks acts from 5 different companies, or you might see a 6-year-old Russian trapeze artist, or an inner-city juggling superstar from the Chicago Youth Circus, or someone trying their act in front of an audience for the first time and asking for feedback, or someone who has done their act so many times they’re going to try it blindfolded this time.

ALSO SATURDAY 8/1

Open Streets
Source: http://www.activetrans.org/openstreets
See what it’s like when streets are filled with people and the street becomes your playground.
8am-2pm | Free

This year’s Open Streets event will cover 8 miles of some of the most beautiful boulevards in Chicago, from 8.30am to 2pm on August 1st. That means that for half the day you’ll be able to ride the broad, leafy boulevards from Logan Square to Little Village with hundreds of other cyclists AND NO CARS.

There are lots of side events happening along the route, so get out there and ride your bike. It’s free, and all thanks to the hard work of the people at the Active Transportation Alliance.

Saturday 2-5pm

Join us July 24th and 25th for a three dimensional freak out of color, form and material. Walk the aisles of a hand-made grocery store created completely out of paper, shoot hoops on a 3 story high basketball net, or just sit down at our collage table and create some work of your own. After the opening and subsequent hangover, come back on July 25th for an art-making BBQ throw down as we combine our creative energies to make collages which we will hand-deliver for free to the people walking around this great city. So drop on by, check out some good stuff and make some of your own. We will have magazines, scissors and glue on hand but feel free to bring your own collage materials to throw down.

Starts: Buckingham Fountain, Chicago
Ends: Whiting, Indiana
9am

Located in Whiting, Indiana, Pierogi Fest is a celebration of that darling dumpling originating in eastern Europe. It was started by a group of friends while eating breakfast (probably vegan-style) at Dimitri’s Cake and Steak. They didn’t choose the Kielbasa, and (luckily) they didn’t choose Charnina (aka. ducks blood soup); instead, they chose the lonely dumpling in an effort to promote good, healthy eating throughout the environmentally friendly town of Whiting, Indiana. So come join us at Buckingham Fountain on Saturday, July 25, 2009. We will take the following route at a “touring” pace (average 12-14mph) that follows this route http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Buckingham-Fountain-Chicago-IL-Whiting-Indiana

These artists from Chicago, NYC, LA, & SF are locally famous for their abilities on (and off) the decks and bring the PARTY like no other! Expect cutting edge beats that span genres.
What is a “dorkbot”?! The idea of the international dorkbot network is “people doing strange things with electricity” and meeting in informal, friendly environments to discuss their projects. These projects could include hardware hacks, New Media Art projects, creative code, circuit bent musical instruments or wild DIY garage science!

The Chicago Underground Library celebrates “The Science of Obscurity”, an evening of new, unpublished, and in-progress works presented as science fair experiments. If you are a writer, publisher, bookmaker, or book-lover of any stripe who has recently finished writing a book, has published a book in the past year, or just feels like taking out some aggression on a publication of your choice, we invite you to celebrate by launching your work into space–or at least halfway down the block. Read a paragraph, then release! And while we’re busy launching texts outside, we’ll be dissecting the mysteries of the literary universe inside.
A BARcamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. The name BARcamp was inspired as a complement to FOOcamp, a private tech gathering run by Tim OReilly.

Each person is encouraged to be a participant either by giving a presentation, or helping with the logistics of planning and running the event.

Its a community thing, so its open to all. My thoughts are that these types of people would enjoy it the most:
* hackers, coders, engineers, programmers, admins, and lowly architects
* designers, graphic artists, web monkeys, and artists interested in tech
* entrepreneurs, tech business guys, social media mavens, investors, sales guys lookin for a product
* professors, students (grad and under-grad), researchers, and academic types wanting to see whats going on in the start-up world
* Significant-Others brave enough (or crazy enough) to attend (be prepared to hear jargon and acronyms more than english).
