Ellesmere Port Memories: The history of the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum

LAST week we told you how Ellesmere Port evolved in 1795 following the opening of the Ellesmere Canal, now the Shropshire Union.

This time we're bringing you the background to how the Boat Museum (National Waterways Museum) was set up to become a thriving tourist attraction.

In 1971, five waterways enthusiasts who had an interest in restoring ex-working boats met to discuss their display, along with the preservation of fast disappearing waterways-related skills.

A voluntary organisation, now the Boat Museum Society, was formed.

Ellesmere Port Memories: Clue to Ellesmere Port's canal past lies in its name

EVER thought how Ellesmere Port evolved?

As a comparatively new town, we have - unlike much older towns - an exact date to go on: July 1, 1795. And it's all to do with transport writes Laurie Stocks-Moore.

On July 1, 1795, the Ellesmere Canal, now the Shropshire Union, opened for business between Chester and the Mersey.

It had been cut through a valley running from near the Dee at Chester to the marshes of the Gowy on the Mersey shores. It was the canal company that built it which gave the town its name.

Having already received positive feedback from the public, Ellesmere Port resident Celia expects to launch a history society in the lead up to the 1940s themed weekend.

Mr Miller said: "The Waterways Trust and volunteers do an outstanding job down there.

Ellesmere Port Memories: The Waterways Action Squad volunteers create colourful mural at the National Waterways Museum

A GROUP of young people have created a new piece of wall art at the National Waterways Museum in Ellesmere Port to celebrate the start of a major youth volunteering project.

The mural was made as part of the Waterways Action Squad initiative and will brighten up a graffiti-covered canal tunnel running alongside the Shropshire Union Canal.

It was designed and created by nine young people, aged between 22 and 25, from Manchester, Sefton, Chester and Liverpool.

Funded by 'v'CORRECT, a national charity for youth volunteering run by the Waterways Trust and British Waterways, the Waterways Action Squad comprises a growing group of young volunteers who want to get involved in the care and promotion of canals and rivers in the North West.

Victoria Kastenbauer led the design process and was one of the nine volunteers involved.

Volunteer Celia Webber is behind the plan and has come up with the idea of having a 1940s themed weekend on November 14 and 15.

The event is being backed by new museum manager John Inch, who is also keen to get more Ellesmere Port people involved with the historic site.

In the lead up to the event Celia hopes to launch a new history society for the town and wants people to email their family trees and old pictures so experts can trace their background and talk about the findings over the weekend.

Celia said: "We want to get more people involved with the museum. John is very enthusiastic and it's nice to have the encouragement to do something like this.

Ellesmere Port Memories: Great Sutton scouting history to be celebrated

Letter from David Burrows of the 1st Great Sutton Scout Group

SCOUTING in Great Sutton can be traced back to 1944 when Mrs Georgina Povey from Green Lane, Great Sutton formed the Great Sutton Wolf Cub Pack. Weekly meetings were held in the Parish Reading Room located in Church Lane until 1966.

The scout group was not formed until 1959 when 'Monty' Evans founded the 1st Great Sutton Boy Scout Group. The Wolf Cubs and their Akela (Mrs Povey) joined the group the same year.

Our scouting aims remain the same as they have always been ie. to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.

Cheshire Memories: Star of the BBC's Victorian Farm show will be appearing at the Cheshire County Show

A TV historian is helping people take a step back in time when they visit the Cheshire County Show.

Star of BBC 2's Victorian Farm Alex Langlands, who lived for a year as a Victorian farmer for the historical documentary about life in the past, will be creating a mini timewarp at this year's show.

Alex will be demonstrating old farming methods and practices, as well as explaining how the lessons of history can be used for a greener lifestyle today.

He will be passing on tips to the expanding 'grow your own' generation wanting to beat the credit crunch and anyone interested in reducing their impact on the environment.

Alex will be at the Tabley showground on Tuesday and Wednesday, June 23 and 24, demonstrating his passion for country crafts like bee keeping, beer and cider making, and stone walling.

Many of the methods that Alex has taken from 1885 can be used for a more sustainable and greener lifestyle today.

Ellesmere Port Memories: Stitch the town's history

A TEAM is being put together to stitch the story of life and faith in Ellesmere Port.

As part of its latest community project, Trinity Methodist Church is forming a group which will create a tapestry for the town.

Last week, 15 people attended a two-day foundation workshop where they were trained in the basic stitches.

Beginners and experts are invited to get involved with the initiative, called A Stitch in Time, and they can help with research, design or stitching.

It is hoped by the end of the year there will be sufficient interest and skill to start work on the panels, which will tell the story of the town.

Vauxhall Motors Memories: First ever team honoured

TOGETHER again 46 years after they first played, Vauxhall Motors - with a little help from the Pioneer - reunited some of the surviving members of the original works team that became Vauxhall Motors FC.

Back in 1963 workers at the plant, some originally from the firm's sister plant in Luton, decided to start a works team, as they had done down south.

With former West Brom player Fred Ward in charge the side came together quickly, joining the Ellesmere Port League.
