AS WE step into the year 2104 our minds are grappling with a future arriving so fast we're playing evolutionary catch-up just to stay current. While cable news taunts viewers with the same old made-up political battles, the most enjoyable thing about being alive now is that our near future is far more exciting, frightening, and just plain interesting than any politically spun story by media organisations attempting to gain audience share or just promote political agendas.

Glancing backwards in our rearview mirrors, the twentieth-century becomes clearer and often more naive as it recedes. Robots were predicted, and interactive machines are getting smarter every year. Flying cars seemed like the coolest things going, and they still do. Star Trek forecast mobile phones, but they called them 'communicators' which is what they've become (plus so much more). It wasn't until 1982 when science fiction writer William Gibson touched on the idea of the internet by coining the term 'cyberspace.' Like Einstein said, "Ideas are in the air."

Thanks to the internet, and the current tech wave that gave us the mobile web and apps for everything, the world is as connected a place as it's ever been. In a world that changes in nanoseconds, and where many humans prefer to live in an idealised past rather than the exciting future, we must think about things like figuring out a workable ethos for society to deal with the fast-approaching future. Here are a few questions worth debating on your next dinner party or trip to the bar.

1. Should Designer Babies be Legal, or How Close to Cloning Is Too Close?

We've reached the pivot point where discussions about the notion of designer babies has become an almost-reality. For years the opportunity to screen embryos for diseases and gender has been available. But as for enhancing and greatly altering a future offspring, it's still in the realm of Hollywood sci-fi movies. Stories of changing an unborn child's eye colour make for sensational journalism, but most couples are more concerned with the overall health of their child to risk cosmetic DNA alterations. Living in a risk vs. reward world, it's easy to see rewards winning out in a hyper-competitive world where wealthy parents consider their preschool selection as the first step toward their child's Harvard degree. While altering eye colour may not be as tempting as boosting a child's capacity for learning or genetic safeguards to prevent diseases, when given a choice to make their offspring more adaptable to the future, the uber-wealthy may only have to ask themselves if they can afford it.

It won't be long before the latest divide between the haves and have nots will extend to the advantageous alterations of an unborn foetus, where just the right amount of DNA tweaking can give a child the potential for genius level intellect or Olympian level athletic performance. At what point should a parent be limited in shaping their child's future? The Supreme Court in 2045 won't be deciding on the legality of abortions, but on 'embryonic genetic enhancements' and 'alterations of the unborn.'

2. Should Violent Criminals Be Forced to Have Their Minds Corrected?

We're almost to the point where neuroscience can unlock some of the more in-depth workings of the mind. Soon, the fog of mental illness that drives disturbed individuals to commit mass murder or become lifelong criminals will be better understood. When serial killing and criminality as a whole are seen as a biological issue rather than a social problem, do the courts or the doctors step in to change behaviour for the good of society?

The iconic image from Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, shows Alex strapped into a chair with his eyes pinned open, forced to watch violent images while being given 'medication' through an eyedropper. The film asks whether behaviour modification works out for the best for society and the individual, or does it lead to unintended consequences. If a serial killer is identified to have an array of mental disorders, and his mind is altered by surgery, is he the same person after the procedure has been applied? Des the state or does an outside doctor decide whether or not a criminal qualifies for mandatory brain surgery? Would an incarcerated killer jump at the chance to have his brain wiped clean? And if a mind is completed altered, is the person who committed the crime still in there?

One researcher currently taking on this topic is David Eagleman, the Director of the Baylor College of Medicine's Initiative on Neuroscience and Law. He is investigating how discoveries in neuroscience can reinvent the law-making process, improve ways of punishing criminals, and develop new methods of rehabilitation.

3. Who's In Charge of Watching the Watchers?

Over the past year we've found out that our government overreached in spying on...well, everyone -- ordinary citizens, leaders of foreign governments, and maybe a few bad guys. We've also been made more aware of just how easily the personal information we willingly provide to retail stores can be stolen in massive data hacking schemes. If we talk on the phone, shop online, or use a computer to any degree, we're being tracked. Worldwide surveillance is now a matter of everyday reality. So who should be in charge of this mega amount of meta-data? Google? The NSA? Each new administration that enters the White house? Walmart? Hollywood?

Connected living has given people countless opportunities, and now we're seeing the darker side of living in a constantly connected digital world. Whether one believes in the confirmation of intrusive spying that came as a result of the Snowden leaks, or one thinks of him as a traitor to his country -- a large part of the data mining and surveillance conversation would not be happening without Edward Snowden.

The government has been shown to stretch and distort the truth when it comes to surveillance programs, and without verifiable trusted oversight, people are right to feel as if they are being watched, open to hacking, and in a virtual landmine field on the web. Why wasn't more information given to the American people sooner? And who is ethical enough to watch the watchers?

Democracy works because it involves many voices, is a messy, never-ending process, and it at least attempts to distribute power evenly. If democracy means more people outside government must help to solve our surveillance and security problems, let's welcome their voices and get them involved. The future's here, and people want their technology to be useful to them, not used against them.

சேரன்மாதேவி குருகுலப் போராட்டப் பின்னணியைப் பற்றி ஒரு புத்தகம் எழுத வேண்டும் என்ற ஆர்வத்தோடு 1998-ல் தன் பயணத்தைத் தொடங்கிய அதியமான், அந்தப் போராட்டத்தைப் பற்றிய முதல் நூலான ‘பெரியாரின் நண்பர்: டாக்டர் வரதராஜுலு நாயுடு வரலாறு’ புத்தகத்தை 2012-ல் கொண்டுவந்தார்; இரண்டாவது நூல் ‘சேரன்மாதேவி குருகுலப் போராட்டமும் திராவிட இயக்கத்தின் எழுச்சியும்’ கடந்த மாதம் வெளியாகியிருக்கிறது (‘காலச்சுவடு’ வெளியீடு). தமிழக அரசியல் போக்கையே புரட்டிப்போட்ட நிகழ்வு சேரன்மாதேவி குருகுலப் போராட்டம். காங்கிரஸிலிருந்து பெரியார் வெளியேற்றத்துக்கும் திராவிட இயக்கத்தின் பேரெழுச்சியின் தொடக்கத்துக்கும் அதுவே மையம். ஆனால், தமிழில் அந்த நிகழ்வைப் பற்றி விரிவான வரலாற்றுப் பதிவொன்று வர 88 ஆண்டுகள் ஆகியிருக்கின்றன. அதியமானின் இந்த நூல்கள் மட்டும் அல்ல; முந்தைய நூல்களான ‘தி.ஜ.ர.’, ‘அறியப்படாத ஆளுமை: ஜார்ஜ் ஜோசப்’, ‘வ.ரா.’, ‘சக்தி வை. கோவிந்தன்’ ஆகியவையும் இப்படித்தான்; பெரும் உழைப்பைக் கோருபவை. அடுத்து வைக்கம் போராட்டத்தை நோக்கி நகர ஆரம்பித்திருக்கிறார் அதியமான்.

சேரன்மாதேவி குருகுலப் போராட்டத்தையே எடுத்துக்குவோமே, தமிழ்நாட்டு அரசியலோட உள்கட்டுமானத்தையே குலைச்சுப்போட்ட போராட்டம் அது. ஆனா, அதுபத்திப் படிக்கணும்னு தேடினப்ப, ஒரு சின்ன புத்தகம்தான் எனக்குக் கிடைச்சிச்சு. எவ்வளவு பெரிய வரலாற்று நிகழ்வு அது? அது ஏற்படுத்தின மாற்றங்கள் எவ்வளவு? யோசிச்சுப்பாருங்க… ஒரு மனுஷனுக்குப் பக்கத்துல சக மனுஷன் உட்கார்ந்து சாப்பிட எவ்வளவு நூற்றாண்டுகள் ஆகியிருக்கு? நாயும் பன்றியும் உரிமையோட சுத்தித் திரியுற தெருக்கள்ல ஒரு மனுஷன் கால் வெச்சு நடக்குறதுக்கு எத்தனை பேர் மல நாத்தத்துக்கு இடையில கொட்டடியில கிடக்க வேண்டியிருந்திருக்கு? ஒரு போராட்டத்துக்குப் பின்னாடி எத்தனை பேர் வாங்கின அடி, உதை, வலி, வதை எல்லாம் உறைஞ்சுகிடக்கு? ஆனா, அப்படிப்பட்ட முக்கியமான போராட்டங்களுக்கான ஆவணப் பதிவே நம்மகிட்ட இல்லேன்னா வர்ற தலைமுறை எதைப் படிக்கும்? நமக்குச் செய்யப்பட்ட தியாகங்களை எப்படி உணரும்? அட, ஆளாளுக்கு வரலாற்றையே மாத்திடுவானே?

இந்த உணர்வுதான் நாம ஏதாவது செய்யணும்ங்கிற எண்ணத்தை உருவாக்குச்சு. அதோட விளைவுதான் நான் எழுதிக்கிட்டும் தொகுத்துக்கிட்டும் இருக்குற நூல்கள். உண்மையில, இன்னைக்குத் திரும்பிப் பார்க்கும்போது 1980-கள்ல நான், சலபதி, இன்னும் சில நண்பர்கள் எல்லாம் பேசிக்கிட்டிருந்ததை நெனைக்கிறேன். நாங்க செய்யணும்னு பேசிக்கிட்டிருந்ததுல, ரொம்ப கொஞ்சத்தைத்தான் இப்போ செஞ்சுருக்கோம்னு தோணுது. நெனைச்சதுக்கும் செஞ்சதுக்கும் இடையில ஏன் இவ்வளவு பெரிய இடைவெளி? நம்மோட சூழலைத்தான் சொல்லணும்.

இந்தச் சேரன்மாதேவி புத்தகத்தையே எடுத்துக்குவோமே, 15 வருஷம் அலைஞ்சு திரிஞ்சுருக்கேன். எப்பவுமே முதன்மை ஆதாரங்கள் அடிப்படையிலதான் எழுதணும்கிறது நான் கடைப்பிடிக்குற விதி. 1924-1925-ல நடந்த போராட்டம் இது. அந்தக் காலத்துப் பத்திரிகைகளைப் பார்க்கணும். எல்லாம் தமிழ்நாட்டுல வெளிவந்ததுதான். ஆனா, இன்னைக்கு அதுல பெரும்பாலானவை இங்கே பார்க்கக் கிடைக்காது. தேட ஆரம்பிச்சா சேரன்மாதேவி, காரைக்குடி, டெல்லி, சிகாகோனு விரியுது இந்த இதழ்கள் இருக்குற இடம். பல்வேறு ஊர்கள், மனிதர்கள், அனுபவங்கள்.

ஒரு வரலாற்று நூலில் சில வரிகள் எழுத இவ்வளவு உழைப்பு தேவைப்படுது; பணம் தேவைப்படுது. என் பிழைப்புக்கு ‘ஆல் இந்தியா ரேடியோ’ வேலை இருக்கு. இந்த ஆய்வுச் செலவுகளுக்கு எங்கே போறது? குடும்பச் செலவுலதான் கைவைக்கிறேன். வீட்டுல எவ்வளவோ திட்டிப் பார்த்து மனைவி சலிச்சுப்போய்ட்டாங்க. ஒரு வேலைல இருக்குற என்னோட சக்திக்கே மீறின விஷயமா இருக்கு. எழுத்தையே நம்பி இருக்குற ஒரு எழுத்தாளருக்கு இது சாத்தியமா?

சரி, எல்லாத்துக்கும் அப்புறம் புத்தகம் வந்துச்சு. என்ன எதிர்பார்க்கிறோம்? வசையைத்தான் எதிர்பார்த்துக் காத்திருக்கோம். அப்படித்தான் இருக்கு நம்ம சமூகச் சூழல். ஆனா, அதுக்காக விட்டுட முடியுமா? இந்தச் சமூகத்துக்கு நாம ஒவ்வொருத்தரும் செலுத்த வேண்டிய நன்றிக்கடன் இருக்கு. நான் என்னோட புத்தகங்கள் மூலமா அதைச் செலுத்துறேன். அசலும் வட்டியுமா நெறைய சேர்ந்து கிடக்கு!

SCAD located in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, is a registered charitable organisation found in 1985 initially helping gypsies and leprosy patients. Today the organisation boasts of educational institutions that provide vocational education to rural youth and they serve over 500 villages in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts of Tamil Nadu. Their rural development model has a holistic approach, aiming to 'reach out the unreached' and help them stand on their own. 'Empowerment' is what they believe in and not just charity.

From gypsies, leprosy patients, the destitute and aged, differently abled, snake charmers, farmers, youth, children to women, SCAD has reached out to all. Their community projects involve helping women form self-help groups so that they gain confidence to avail micro-credit, educating villagers so that they understand issues affecting them, provide them with health facilities through mobile units, reach out to farmers through technology demonstrations to help increase farm productivity and encourage animal husbandry for extra income.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has awarded SCAD for the best functioning women's self-help groups and also for the best functioning women's federation. Dr. Cletus Babu was awarded the Best Social Entrepreneur for the year 2007 by the Prime Minister.

In February 1958 I was permanently transferred to the IFS (“B”). I had served at Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian diplomatic missions at Addis Ababa, Washington DC, Algiers and Toronto. I retired from Government service as Under Secretary on 30 November 1982. After spending a few years with my son at Ahmedabad, I shifted to Mumbai in 1986. I served in various capacities in Mumbai. My last post was as Executive Director, India-China Chamber of Commerce & Industry at Mumbai from March 1991 to February 2011, when I finally retired from my second career. I am now continuing my hobby of translating articles on spiritual and philosophical matter from Tamil/Kannada into English and publishing these at http://pnramachandran.blogspot.in and at http://pnramchandran.wordpress.com.

நெல்லை: நெல்லை - தென்காசி இடையேயான ரயில் போக்குவரத்து இன்று தொடங்கிவைக்கப்பட்டது.

நெல்லை - தென்காசி இடையே ரூ. 220 கோடி செலவில் அகல ரயில்பாதை அமைக்கப்பட்டது.இதில் நெல்லை - செங்கோட்டைக்கு ரயில் போக்குவரத்து தொடக்க விழா இன்று காலை தொடங்கியது.

தென்னக ரயில்வே மதுரை கோட்ட மேலாளர் ஏ.கே. ரஸ்தோகி தலைமை தாங்கினார். அமைச்சர் செந்தூர்பாண்டியன், ராமசுப்பு எம்.பி. ஆகியோர் கொடியசைத்து ரெயில் போக்குவரத்தை தொடங்கி வைத்தனர். காலை 9.40 மணிக்கு நெல்லை ரயில் நிலையத்தில் இருந்து ரயில் புறப்பட்டது.

இந்த ரயிலில் ராமசுப்பு எம்.பி., லிங்கம் எம்.பி. ஆகியோர் தொண்டர்களுடன் பயணம் செய்தனர். புதிய ரெயில் டவுண், பேட்டை, சேரன்மகாதேவி, காருக்குறிச்சி, வீரவநல்லூர், கல்லிடைக்குறிச்சி, அம்பை, கீழஆம்பூர், ஆழ்வார்குறிச்சி, ரவண சமுத்திரம், கீழக்கடையம், மேட்டூர், பாவூர்சத்திரம், கீழப்புலியூர் ரயில் நிலையங்களில் நின்று சென்றது.

இந்த ரயில் நிலையங்களில் பயணிகள் திரண்டு புதிய ரயிலுக்கு உற்சாக வரவேற்பு கொடுத்தனர். தொடக்க நாளான இன்று 3 முறை மட்டுமே ரயில் இயக்கப்பட்டது.நாளை முதல் ரயில் சேவை முறையாக 4 தடவை இயக்கப்பட உள்ளது.அதன்படி செங்கோட்டையில் காலை 6.30 மணிக்கு, ரயில் எண் 59796 புறப்படுகிறது.இது 6.41 மணிக்கு தென்காசிக்கும், 8.45 மணிக்கு நெல்லைக்கும் வந்தடையும். மறுமார்க்கத்தில் நெல்லையில் இருந்து 9.30 மணிக்கு புறப்படும் ரயில் எண் 56797 பகல் 11.03க்கு தென்காசியையும், 11.45 மணிக்கு செங்கோட்டையையும் சென்ற டைகிறது.

இதே போல் செங்கோட்டையில் இருந்து மதியம் 3.15 மணிக்கு புறப்படும் ரயில் (எண் 59798) 3.26 மணிக்கு தென்காசியையும், 5.30 மணிக்கு நெல்லையையும் அடைகிறது. மறுமார்க்கத்தில் நெல்லையில் இருந்து மாலை 6.20 மணிக்கு புறப்படும் ரயில் (எண் 56799) 7.43 மணிக்கு தென்காசியை சென்றடைகிறது.8.35 மணிக்கு செங்கோட்டை செல்கிறது.

Sometimes we wonder, who we are, who our ancestors are, what they did. How did we end up being what we are now? Most of the time we were told, by outsiders about our roots. This post is an attempt by a commoner to put facts together and figure out the long lost history. 500,000 years ago

Pangaea

Science tells us once upon a time, there was a supercontinent that existed during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras about 250 million years ago, before the component continents were separated separated into their current configuration. Although there is no proof of Human evolution during this time, this geologic period, known as “Permian Period” was characterized among land vertebrates by the diversification of the early amniotes into the ancestral groups of the mammals, turtles, lepidosaurs and archosaurs. Present day India was embedded in this huge landmass sandwiched between Africa, Antarctica and Australia.

This period is ended by the Permian–Triassic extinction event, an extinction event that occurred 251.4 million years ago forming the boundary between the Permian and Triassic geologic periods. It was the Earth's most severe extinction event, with up to 96 percent of all marine species and 70 percent of terrestrial vertebrate species becoming extinct;

Rifting and break-up of Pangaea

Pangaea began to rift from the Tethys Ocean in the east and the Pacific in the west, ultimately giving rise to the supercontinents Laurasia and Gondwana.One rift resulted in a new ocean, the North Atlantic Ocean.The second major phase in the break-up of Pangaea began in the Early Cretaceous period, when the minor supercontinent of Gondwana separated into four multiple continents (Africa, South America, India and Antarctica/Australia). During this time many new types of dinosaurs appeared or came into prominence, including psittacosaurs, spinosaurs and coelurosaurs, while other survivors from the Late Jurassic continued.

500,000 years ago

There was a vast land mass that was submerged inside the Indian Ocean. It had a river also called "Pahruli Aaru". This land mass was there to the south of present day's Kanyakumari. Modern humans are believed to have evolved from archaic Homo sapiens, who in turn evolved from Homo erectus. Archaic homo sapiens are referred to as "Homo sapiens" because their brain size is very similar to that of modern humans. Archaic Homo sapiens had a brain size averaging 1200 to 1400 cubic centimeters, which overlaps with the range of modern humans. Archaics are distinguished from anatomically modern humans by having a thick skull, prominent brow ridges and the lack of a prominent chin.

Origin of language

The origin of language, known in linguistics as Glottogony, refers to the acquisition of the ability to use language by an earlier stage in the evolution of mankind. Robin Dunbar,a British anthropologist and evolutionary biologist, has argued that Archaic Homo sapiens were the first to use language. There was a single proto-language, sometimes called Proto-Human, from which all other languages spoken by humans descend. All human populations possess language. This includes populations, such as the Tasmanians and the Andamanese, who may have been isolated from the Old World continents for as long as 40,000 years. Two types of evidence support this theory.

Gestural language and vocal language depend on similar neural systems. The regions on the cortex that are responsible for mouth and hand movements border each other.

Nonhuman primates can use gestures or symbols for at least primitive communication, and some of their gestures resemble those of humans, such as the "begging posture", with the hands stretched out, which humans share with chimpanzees

200,000 to 50,000 BC: Porunai valley civilization

During this Age, other Islands elsewhere in the World were also connected to their continental neighbors - Britain to Europe; Cuba to Florida, Papua New Guinea and Tasmania to Australia and the Indonesian Isles of Sumatra, Java and Borneo to the South East Asian mainland. Ancient port cities on the coast of Eastern, Southern and Western India,

Humans have been living with a language and culture to communicate at least for 150,000 years. Any upheaval, which happened before that, is not in our cultural memory.

While the rest of the world were in dark ages, hunting and gathering food, root of civilization thrived in the region comprising the present day Tamil Nadu and the landmass south of it. The Madurai city mentioned in the ancient Tamil literature of Sangam age was located on the shores of Bay of Bengal. It submerged into the sea and the Pandya king redesigned the city at a place called Kapatapuram. This again was submerged after some time and so the King built third Madurai beyond the reaches of the sea.

Literature flourished with the establishment of first Academies of the world called Sangams. Popularly called Mudhal Sangam, this period was the beginning of grammar. The words Manthi and Manthan available in Tamil indicates that man evolved from monkey and this transformation is recorded in the first language of the world. The practice of Thenpulaththar worship that prevails in south India probably shows that they pray to their ancestors who died in sea disaster. In the Book, ‘Feeders of Indian Culture’ ,Upaththyaya claims that the world ‘Aanmanthi’ is the root of ‘Hanumanth’. As part f the geographical transformation, Kaverippoompattinam (Puhar) went under the sea.

Spear, once used as a tool by Hunters, became a weapon unifying civilizations. The evolution of Dravidian Marital art of Silambattam resulted in the evolution of first Army of the world. The use of Spear in various cultures ranging from the barbarians of ancient Rome, Greece, Australian aborigines, Red Indians and various negro civilizations is an ample proof that the seeds of human civilization are sowed from ancient Tamil civilization. Spear is revered as Vel or Muruga in ancient Tamil Nadu. The world “Aadhi Bagavan” in the ancient Tamil text of Thirukkural is a cryptic indication that Muruga is not a Hindu god but the God of ancient Tamils.

Aryan Contamination – Origin of Caste System

Models of the Indo-Aryan migration discuss scenarios of prehistoric migrations of the early Indo-Aryans to their historically attested areas of settlement in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent and from there further across all of North India. Claims of Indo-Aryan migration are primarily drawn from linguistic evidence but also from a multitude of data stemming from Vedic religion, rituals, poetics as well as some aspects of social organization and chariot technology.

As the Dravidian master race pushed forward towards Himalayas, it inevitably made contact with the tribal Aryans who pushed from Europe towards modern day Pakistan. Once the Aryans were conquered and subjugated , ancient Dravidian cultures started civilizing the primitive Aryan tribes. This resulted in the origin of one of the oldest religions in the world, Hinduism.

The Aryan Races, for instance, now varying from dark brown, almost black, red-brown, yellow, down to the whitest creamy color, are yet of one and the same stock and sprang from one single progenitor,. This Race gave birth to a new Race, gradually transforming that portion of humanity which became "black with sin" into red-yellow and finally into brown-white races -- which now, together with the yellow races, form the great bulk of humanity.

To avoid further dilution of Dravidian superiority, so called mixed marriage of an "Aryan" with a "Dravidian" was forbidden. To maintain the purity of the Dravidian master race, eugenics was practiced. KALAKKAD

The Kalakkad wildlife sanctuary is about 15 km from Cheranmahadevi and is located in the beautiful hills of the Western Ghats, covering an area of 223 sq kms in the Tirunelveli District. The sanctuary along with Mundanthurai sanctuary together form the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. For tourists desirous of visiting the sanctuary, the ideal time should be anytime between September to March.

Animals and Birds in the Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary

Wildlife seen in the sanctuary includes Tiger, leopard, Lion Tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Bonnet Macaque and common Langur, Nilgiri Tahr, wild dog, sloth bear, elephant, spotted deer, mouse deer,lion tailed macaque, brown mongoose and malabar giant squirrel.

Close to 100 species of birds can be spotted in the Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary creating a beautiful environment for a bird watcher. Some of the species include emerald dove, minivets, bee caters, quails, egrets, herons, jungle fowl, spur fowl, partridge, sparrows and night jars

The flora ranges from forests of tropical wet ever-green to Tropical dry deciduous and thorn forest at down hills.

Trekking in the Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary

A number of adventure activities can be enjoyed in the Kalkad wildlife sanctuary. Trekking is one of them, and perhaps the most popular one. Trekking can be done with prior permission from the Forest (Wildlife) Department. There are 24 marked out trek routes in the sanctuary anf travellers can choose from anyone of them for thier trip.

Also forest department building and the rangers office with some bungalows for VIPs and travellers is located. The Tiger Cottage is a dormatory style cottage maintained by the Forest Department. It has a rest room and a few double-deckered beds. The route to the cottage is very good with trees on both the sides and there is ample parking space. There is access to the river from the rear of the building and staying here at night is quite an experience. There is a kitchen where you get decent food while visiting the area. There are friendly people and guides to some of the places nearby.

MUNDANDURAI

There is nothing to differentiate this sanctuary from that of Kalakkadu, except the absence of the Elephant and Gaur situated of about 28Km from Cheranmahadevi, It ranges to 567 Sq. Kms. Sanctuary boasts of dry deciduous to tropical wet evergreen forests with patches of pure reeds. Animal wealth includes Tiger, Bonet macaque, Langurs, Glender Loris, Sloth Bear, Sambhar, Chital, wild Dog. Excellent for various species of avi fauna and varieties of reptiles and insects. Trekking trails are with prior permission from the Forest (Wildlife) department. Accommodation is available in Forest Rest House at Mundathurai with catering facilities and PWD Rest House. It is a scenic beauty on the way to Upper Kodaiyar. It is a beautiful picnic spot worth visiting.

UPPER KODAIYAR

It is located on the Southern most tip of the Western Ghats bordering Kerala. It is a beautiful area where nature is at its best with verdant forests. Tea, Rubber and Cardamom are grown here on a large scale. Manjolai is the best known place here. Kakachi, Nalumukku, Kuthiraiyerr, Oothu are important locals where one can have beautiful panoramic view. A mini Golf Course is also available here.

KARAIYAR

Karaiyar waterfalls are said to have mineral properties. Bathing in this waterfalls is considered good for both mind and body. It is a big tourist attraction and is visited by young and old alike, because of the herbal medicinal properties the water.You can go boating for a half an hour and reach the Vaanatheertham (mispoken as Baanatheertham) in the Karaiyar dam.

Karaiyar Dam (also known as Tambaraparani or Tamirabarani Dam) is a reservoir built on the river of Tamirabarani. It is located at just 20 km from the town of Papanasam. The dam is part of the Kalakad Mundanthurai (Mundandurai) Tiger Reserve, which is one of the largest of its kind in the country. Karaiyar Dam is also known as Papanasam Upper Dam located nearly 25km away from the Papanasam Falls, while the Papanasam Lower Dam is located close to the Papanasam Falls.

PAPANASAM

Papanasam Falls, popularly called "Agastiyar Falls". Papanasam is a small village located at the foot hills of Western Ghats, on the banks of river thamiraparani. The place is easily approachable from the nearest town Tirunelveli.

It is believed, once there was a Pandya king who got converted to Buddhism and ill-treated those among his subjects who did not convert to Buddhism as he decreed. Unable to face the harassment, a family with who were ardent devotees of Lord Shiva, left their home with their two children and went to a neighboring state. Unfortunately the family got caught up in a war that was raging there and the children, one boy and the other a girl, got separated from each other.

Many years later they arrived in Banares the holy city, where they met each other, fell in love and got married without realising that they were brother and sister. They found out their mistake afterwards and sought ways of absolving their sin. They were advised to wear black and to bathe in all the sacred waters in India and when their black clothes turning white sill be an indication that they were absolved of their sin.

Accordingly they went from place to place in search of redemption and finally when they bathed in the river Thamiraparni at Papanasam their clothes turned white thus indicating the absolution of their sin. Hence the deity in this temple, Siva, is refered to as 'Papavinaseswarar' - the redeemer of sins. The river Thamiraparni passes in front of the Temple. The Papanasam water falls and Banatheertham water falls in the river up hills are very sacred, beautiful places.

MANJOLAI

Manjolai is a scenic beauty on the way to upper Kodaiyar. It is also a beautiful picnic spot worth visiting. Manjolai is located between elevations ranging from 1000 to 1500 Metres, the Manjolai area is set deep within the Western Ghats within the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in the Tirunelveli District. Located on top of the Manimuthar Dam & the Manimuthar Water Falls, the Manjolai area comprises Tea Plantations, Small settlements around the tea plantations; Upper Kodaiyar Dam and a windy view point called Kuthiravetti.

The Tea Plantations and the whole of Manjolai Estates are tea operated by The Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation Ltd on Forest Lands leased by the Government of Tamil Nadu. There are 3 Tea Estates within the Manjolai area - Manjolai Estate, Manimutharu Estate & Oothu Estate. The Estates are located on elevations ranging between 2300 Feet to 4200 Feet. The estates, road & the settlements in the Manjolai area are managed by The Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation Ltd.

PATTAMADAI

Pattamadai is the ancestral village in Tirunelveli district, is famous for its beautiful KORAI MATS. In the olden days it was considered prestigious to include a couple of these mats in a wedding collection. Woven from Korai gross growing on the banks of the river Thamirabarani and it is said that the smoothness of the mats depends on how finely the Korai is split. So exquisitely fine is the weave of the finest of mats that it can be slipped into a pocket folded like a handkerchief. Old Craftsmen will tell you with pride that it was a finely textured pattamadai mat that was chosen in 1947 as India's wedding gift to Queen ELIZABETH (2). Mostly Muslims who weaves these mats. Eleven-year-old (23.05.2000) K. Vishalini - a IT whiz-kid from our place Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, is blessed with an IQ of around 225. It is higher than that of the Guinness record holder, Kim Ung-Yong, whose IQ is around 210.

Her amazing achievements include cracking the Microsoft Certified Professional and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) courses with ease.

“She did not find a place in the Guinness Book because the minimum age requirement is 14 years,” says her electrician-father, Kumarasamy.

She overcame her speech impairment and now visits engineering colleges to deliver lectures to B.E. and B.Tech students on the intricacies of computer science.

Blessed with exceptional IQ, the Standard 8 student is an IT whiz kid who can come up with solutions to the trickiest of technical problems.

She took the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification exam and got 90% marks says her father. It was a world record. She was only 10 years old then.

Though engineering colleges are eager to enroll her, her parents want the girl to enjoy her childhood for the next three years before thinking of entering a college campus.

International conventions

Annual International conventions are held at Irumbuliyur in Chennai, Kottarakara in Kerala India , Kokkavila Srilanka and in Ohio USA.

This year (2012) International convention at chennai will be started from Wednesday, 7 March 2012 at 13:00 until Sunday, 11 March 2012 at 21:30.

International conventions of India are held in Chennai and Kottarakara annually in March and February. In 2011 it attracted over 150,000 worshippers. International convention of America held in July and International convention of Srilanka held in December.

Every November an International Youth Camp is held at Irumbuliyur in Chennai, India. Admission is strictly for the youths only who have below 30 years of age and unmarried. If any young boy want to participate in the youth camp, he should obtain B-Form from his local church and apply well in advance though his local church. Nobody is allowed to participate directly.

The largest European convention held in London in the last week of August.
