This Saturday: Anthony Swofford at Writers With Drinks!

Writers With Drinks is finally breaking away from the Gerbil Memoir trend -- we're going to be the first spoken word event in San Francisco that doesn't require memoirists to narrate their life stories from the vantage point of gerbils. Nor will any of the readers on our stage be wearing gerbil heads. Except for Anthony Swofford, who requested it. And Joe Loya. And Roz Savage. Okay, okay, fine. They'll all be wearing gerbil heads. But it's their choice, and we're respecting it. Also, don't bring any giant sunflower seeds to the event, or there could be some unpleasantness.
New Democrats Chapter 1: Stop Thinking! Stop Thinking!

The Democrats control the White House, the House and the Senate, and sweeping healthcare reform is just around the corner. It's 1993 -- and a group of young policy wonks is madly in love and ready to make a difference.

http://www.charliejane.com/PB-NewDem-01.mp3

New Democrats is my attempt at doing a zeitgeisty, Whit Stillman-esque novel about the first two years of the Clinton administration, which started with so much optimism and ended with the rise of Newt Gingrich. What went wrong? And why was the ascendancy of policy wonks as the leaders of government cut so cruelly short? We'll see the whole thing through the eyes of a starry-eyed group of young wonks trying to break into politics. I promise to post a half-hour segment every week, most likely on Weds. evening or Thursday morning. Hope you enjoy! And if you do like it, please tell your friends!
