Fame meets Main on AMC’s new unscripted competition series, “Showville.” The series centers around a small town talent show featuring local acts, who get the chance of a lifetime to be in the spotlight. “Showville” is a celebration of performing, and a fond, funny look at the lives, workplaces and families of these acts and what happens to them when Hollywood comes to town. Each week, a one-hour episode of “Showville” touches down in a quintessentially American small town and puts together a talent show in a mere four days. Actor Alec Mapa and choreographer Lisette Bustamante are the series’ performance coaches, working with the show’s finalists each week to prep them for their performance in front of a live, local audience.

“Showville” hosted open call auditions in the following towns, offering locals of all ages – from singers and dancers to comedy acts and jugglers – an opportunity to win $10,000 in prize money:

· Holland, Michigan;
· Kingston, Rhode Island;
· Walla Walla, Washington;
· San Marcos, Texas;
· Hugo, Oklahoma;
· Mount Airy, North Carolina;
· Athens, Ohio; and
· Fairfield, Iowa,

As the series’ performance coaches, Mapa and Bustamante will be given 48 hours to mentor each town’s four finalists in preparation for the “big show.” The audience gets to know the finalists and their back-stories as they are coached over two days with the goal of bringing out the best of their abilities. The final competition will take place at a well-known town venue where an audience comprised of locals, including families, friends and neighbors, will join together and ultimately be responsible for selecting the victor.

Seattle reggae rockers Kore Ionz released their first official music video for “First Avenue” off the World War Free album. Both the song and video feature a collaboration with Prometheus Brown (aka Geologic) of renowned Seattle hip hop duo Blue Scholars. Starring rapper Prometheus Brown and up-and-coming actress Jessica Hu, “First Avenue” explores an interracial and cross-cultural relationship that starts in an American Ethnic Studies classroom at the University of Washington and ends when Hu brings the Filipino American rapper home to meet her Japanese American father. Stephen Sumida, Ph.D. and Gail Nomura, Ph.D., both professors of American Ethnic Studies at the University of Washington, make special guest appearances in the music video. Home on a quick break from The Heist World Tour with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, trumpet player Owuor Arunga was also present for the shoot. “First Avenue” was shot in Seattle at a private residence in the Mount Baker neighborhood, the University of Washington, and at `Ohana Belltown. The music video was shot in two days in early March 2013 with director and cinematographer Terrence Jeffrey Santos of M.A.D. Northwest, who documented the current state of the booming Seattle rap scene in “The Otherside.”

Nearly 400 Asian American and Pacific Islanders from all walks of life gathered at the Department of the Interior for the White House Forum on Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage, where we discussed ways the Department, especially the National Park Service, can better tell the story of the APA experience in America and the contributions this vibrant community has made to our country and its culture. During the forum, new Interior Secretary Sally Jewell pledged her support for the APA Theme Study. “Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have long been leaders in every aspect of our social fabric – in government, business, science, medicine, the arts, education and our armed forces,” Secretary Jewell said. “From Angel Island where more than one million Asian immigrants arrived on these shores, to the Chinese immigrants who helped build the railroads across the country, to the Japanese American internment camps of World War II, these stories are all important threads in the great American tapestry.”

APA leaders from across the country discussed our community’s progress, and how our stories really constitute the fabric of the larger American story. They also discussed National Park Service’s efforts, over the coming months, to guide the theme study scholars in developing narratives that will connect tangible places to so many intangible stories. The Service’s National Historic Landmark program will use the theme study to guide future nominations of National Historic Landmarks and National Register properties.

For years, one of the goals of mine was always to provide my mother with something she worked so hard for and lost. Las Vegas was one of the hardest hit city in the economic downturn, and my mother ended up losing her home. This is the first house I ever purchased and I wanted to give my mother a home before myself because she deserves it the most. It’s been a long time coming and I just wanted to share this special moment with you.

Jia Li has become an Australian citizen after 4 years of hard work and study, during which time she has built up a client base working for Serena, a nasty hairdresser, who takes advantage of her, paying under the counter with no job security.

Having finally paid her dues, gaining citizenship she thinks she will be able to bring her family to Australia. Instead of giving her a better job, Serena sacks her. On returning home she finds she’s being evicted to make way for an upmarket redevelopment.

Lost and bewildered she turns to her ex-boyfriend Kong for help, a mid-level triad member, but finds herself unable to ask him for help and runs, returning to her apartment to find her former co-worker Daisy on her doorstep.

Daisy a half Chinese half Japanese Harajuku girl communicates with Jia only through monosyllabic responses in Japanese, a sophisticated texting computer and a simple set of gestures and understandings. Daisy invites Jia to stay with her while she gets back on her feet. Jia reluctantly accepts until she finds a new home.

Kong furious for losing Jia again embarks on a quest to get Jia back whether she wants him or not. Conflicted between love and keeping face and the obligation he owes toward her family for their help of his family in coming to Australia.

Moving into Daisy’s up market flat Jia spends the evening talking about their families and dreams.The next day Daisy transforms Jia with a makeover into a hip streetwise young thing. They go to see her former client Jenny Chan a Chinese real-estate agent.

Jenny challenges Jia to take control of her life and gives her the alternative opportunity to open her own salon. She offers her a shop owned by an acquaintance, John Simkins. Jenny convinces Jia to trust in herself and start her own hair salon. Jia and Daisy inspect the shop with John Simkins. They hear how he started his working life and met his wife there. Jia haggles on the price and terms, in the end getting the office for what she can afford.

Meanwhile Kong continues to search for Jia, more and more angrily. He ends up finally Serena’s salon where he beats up Serena for braking their agreement to employ Jia. There he learns that she has sacked Jia contrary to their agreement. For Jia and Daisy the day disappears in a whirlwind shopping spree which provides the equipment for the salon but also wipes out most of Jia’s funds. Kong meets up with some of his triad peers and their girlfriends in a city restaurant. Jenny’s PA May tells him that she saw Jia and can get her address.

Returning to her former place of work to get the client contacts in her diary, Jia reluctantly faces Serena, brushing aside her threats and standing up to her taking her dairy and leaving a furious Serena powerless.

Back at the new salon Daisy is cleaning when Kong arrives. He and Daisy exchange words in an escalating argument that is interrupted by Jia’s arrival. Kong demands that Jia return to him or she will have to pay for protection. Daisy steps in the gap and offers her money. Kong lashes out at Daisy, hitting Jia instead and knocking her to the ground.

Stunned by the blow Jia’s world spins. Finally getting to her feet, she picks up the fallen money and demands Kong to take it and never come back. She makes it clear that his family’s obligation is over. Caught between obligation and honour Kong has lost. He leaves Jia and Daisy the masters of their domain.

Over the past year, Eric Lim worked on a project in memory of his sister. His sister, Tanya Lim, killed herself, leaving behind her savings to him. He felt the only appropriate use of this tragic gift was to make something both in her honor and to prevent others from falling into the dark place she fell victim to. To shed a ray of strength on people affected by depression. The end result is “The Forge,” a short film made by a great group of friends and strangers-turned-family that came together to make a reimagining of the public service announcement in their free time. The short is an emotional, anti-suicide message in which a man battles his inner demon in a fight for his life. The production value is impressive with visual effects to illustrate Eric’s thoughts and feelings.

They managed to get an important YouTube channel to host their video: SoulPancake, created by actor Rainn Wilson (Dwight, from NBC’s THE OFFICE). They have agreed to host their message without asking anything in return because they were moved by their message. Rainn Wilson states, “The Forge is an incredibly rich and powerful film. The entire SoulPancake family was moved by Eric Lim’s story and his love for his sister. Death is such a universal experience, but when a life ends too soon, it can be hard to express that grief. This film expresses those feelings beautifully, and we’re grateful that Eric and Stephen Reedy have chosen to partner with our channel to share this with the world.”
