General Motors Corp (NYSE:GRM), firm which emerged after bankruptcy protection, has reported a loss of $1.2 billion in the three months ended September this year.

The company’s revenue stood at $28 billion in the third quarter of this year, up about $4.9 billion as compared to revenue of General Motors Corporation (Old GM) in the second quarter of 2009, GM said while reporting its first financial performance figures since it began operations as a new company on July 10, 2009.

Amid improving global economic conditions, its healthier cash position and stabilising industry sales, GM also announced plans to accelerate repayment of its outstanding loans with the US and Canadian governments ahead of schedule.

“We have significantly more work to do, but today’s results provide evidence of solid foundation we’re building for the new GM. With a healthier balance sheet and a competitive cost structure, our focus is on driving top line performance,” GM President and CEO Fritz Henderson said.

“We’ll achieve that by winning customers over, one at a time, with vehicles that deliver performance and value,” Henderson added.

For the July 10-September 30 period, GM had positive managerial operating cash flow of $3.3 billion, reflecting favourable working capital impact from production start up, timing of supplier payments and lower capital spending, a company statement said, business-standard reported.

GM’s global presence helped the company, particularly in China, where its sales of 478,000 in the third quarter increased 6 percent over the second quarter. GM earned $429 million before taxes and interest at its Asia Pacific unit, which includes China, and $245 million in Latin America. It had pretax losses of $651 million in North America and $437 million in Europe.

Cisco Systems Inc. ((NSDQ: CSCO) on Monday raised its cash offer for Norwegian videoconferencing company Tandberg ASA (TAA.OS) to about 3.4 billion U.S. dollars.

Cisco announced on October 1 that it was pursuing a $3 billion cash takeover of Tandberg, a major global supplier of video conferencing equipment with dual headquarters in Oslo, Norway, and New York City.

Cisco announced that it is now offering to purchase all the outstanding shares of Tandberg for 170 Norwegian Kroner per share, which is said to be the networking giant’s “final price” for the transaction.

According to Cisco, the acceptance period is also extended to Dec. 1 this year.

Cisco will “withdraw the offer and evaluate alternative ways to expand our activities in the video communications market” if it doesn’t achieve the desired level of acceptances representing 90 percent shares, the company said in a statement.

On Oct. 1, Cisco initially offered to buy Tandberg for 153.5 Norwegian Kroner per share or about 3 billion dollars in total. The deal was backed by Tandberg’s board but has received opposition from some minority shareholders who said the offer price is too low.

Infosys Technologies Ltd (NASDAQ:INFY) (INFY.BO) BPO, announced that the company has signed a definite agreement to acquire all of the outstanding interests of US-based business process solutions provider McCamish Systems LLC.

McCamish has about 260 employees working out of Atlanta, and has about 39 clients.

The upfront consideration for the deal is $38 million with up to an additional $20 million payable to the sellers if McCamish Systems achieves certain financial targets in the future.

Infosys (BOM:500209), which had cash reserves of Rs 13,976 crore ($2.97 billion) for quarter ending ending September 2009, has been slow on the acquisitions front compared to its peers like Tata Consulting Services (TCS) and Wipro.

French car maker PSA Peugeot-Citroen (UG.FR) (PEUP.PA) raised its full-year guidance for operating profit to break even due to the success of its new models and the recent improvement in auto markets.

The shares powered ahead, gaining 6.4 percent to 25.28 euros by 1034 GMT and underpinning an 0.8 percent rise in the Dow Jones Stoxx Autos index .SXAP and setting a 13-month high.

Chief executive Philippe Varin is due to unveil his long-term plans for the group to investors later on Thursday and the new outlook replaces a very downbeat forecast in July.

Late last month, the head of market leader Volkswagen (VOWG.DE), Martin Winterkorn, said there was no reason yet for premature optimism and that the business climate remained tough.

Analyst Adam Jonas at Morgan Stanley said that PSA had the “most conservative second-half guidance of any European (carmaker) this year”.

He added the higher guidance was positive for to all European volume players including Fiat (FIA.MI) and Renault (RENA.PA) Reuters reported.

European car sales rose 6.3 percent in September as vehicle-scrapping incentives boosted demand in Germany, France and the U.K., according to figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

Fortescue Metals Group Ltd. (ASX:FMG) (FMG.AU) Chief Executive Andrew Forrest said Thursday demand for iron ore is increasing and that he expects spot prices to rise.

“We are taking more calls from potential customers than during the 2008-09 peak. Everyone is looking for iron ore. Spot prices will continue to firm,” Forrest said in a speech at the Sydney Mining Club.

“We have a large group of players who are happy to support Fortescue and that is a good time to go to the Australian banks and give them the opportunity to back another Australian.”

The Pilbara miner had attempted to strike a $US6bn deal with China, but that failed when the economic powerhouse did not offer terms acceptable to the company, forcing Fortescue to look internally to fund its ambitious expansion plans.

Mr Forrest would not comment if he was still in talks with China about potential future funding, and instead reiterated the company had chosen to take a different path.

“I really wanted Fortescue to take some breathing space and we put a fair bit of leadership energy into that and I really want that leadership energy to … make the two projects sing,’” he said.

“All the energy is on internal funding.”

Mr Forrest also said he expected spot prices to rise, and that the miner was now taking more calls from potential customers than during the 2008-09 peak.

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT), the biggest U.S. mobile-phone maker, is looking to sell its home and network mobility business for $4-5 billion, The Wall Street Journal reports. The move is part of the telecom company’s attempt to plug declining sales by splitting itself into three businesses, which include the mobile devices unit, the home and networks business and an enterprise mobility unit.

The division accounted for about a third of Motorola’s sales last quarter.

JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM), Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) and Centerview Partners are advising Motorola on the sale.

Private equity funds, TPG Capital and Silver Lake Partners, have expressed their interest in the unit, which was built largely from Motorola’s $17 billion acquisition of General Instrument in 2000.

The division had sales last year of $10.1 billion. Q3 sales were about $2 billion, down 15% year over year. GAAP operating earnings for the units were $199 million, down from $263 million in the year-ago quarter.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ), the world’s biggest personal-computer maker, plans to acquire network equipment maker 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ:COMS) in a $2.7 billion deal, stepping up competition with Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) in computer networking.

The 3Com products will be folded into HP’s networking equipment business. HP says it will give 3Com stockholders $7.90 per share. Both companies’ boards have approved the deal, which HP expects will close in the first half of 2010.

The 3Com acquisition represents the latest attempt by HP, the world’s No. 1 maker of personal computers, to expand into more profitable areas than PCs. HP’s PC division made up nearly a third of the company’s total revenue in the last nine months, but only 17 percent of its operating income.

Just last week, Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) teamed up with EMC in a joint venture to combine their computing, storage, and networking products in a play for HP’s core business, enterprise computing equipment. Cisco just started making server computers this year.

3Com has nearly a third of the computer-switching market in China and its products are used by 70% of the Chinese government’s networks as well as in 300 of the top 500 enterprise companies in the nation, HP said. 3Com also has a major research facility in China.

A 3Com acquisition would make HP more of a threat to networking powerhouse Cisco, which has been moving into the computer titan’s turf. It would also help HP expand beyond a computer market beaten down by the financial crisis.

CBS Corp. (CBS.N) posted third quarter net income of $207.6 million, compared to a net loss of $12.46 billion in the same quarter last year. Earnings per share for the period were $0.30, compared to a loss of $18.58 per share in last year period.

Analysts had expected CBS to report a profit of 22 cents a share on a topline of $3.195 billion.

CBS posted a quarterly profit of $207.6 million including one-time charges and benefits that boosted the bottom line by $38.1 million. In the year-ago period, CBS had posted a loss of $12.46 billion due to impairment charges, or a profit of $265.9 million when excluding them.

Despite continued softness in local advertising, Moonves was bullish, saying he expected CBS’ TV advertising to grow this quarter and into 2010. That’s because the company’s marquee asset, the CBS TV network, has gotten off to a solid start for the new season, sparking demand for the network’s commercial time.

Last summer, when CBS sold the bulk of its commercial inventory for the season, the economy was shaky and advertisers held down spending. As a result, CBS did not sell as much ad time in advance as it has in previous years.

Quarterly revenue declined only minimally from $3.38 billion to $3.35 billion. TV unit revenue rose 9%, but TV ad revenue fell 5% amid continued weakness in the local ad market and weaker political ad sales.

CBS is particularly vulnerable to advertising, with about 65 percent of its revenue typically coming from it. But Chief Executive Les Moonves, in a conference call, said he saw better trends in both the economy and advertising. He affirmed the company’s full year profit outlook.

CBS, which is based in New York, posted net income of $208 million, reversing a $12.5 billion loss a year ago in a quarter that was marred by impairment charges.
