The NEW Casa de Campo gym which opened at Christmas time is wonderful and if you’re a bit of a ‘gym bunny’ or a ‘fitness freak’ (which I most certainly am not and really should be….) then it’s the perfect place to work out, especially given that now they are offering a special combined membership which includes some great luxury treatments at the Cygalle Healing Spa!

Only in the DR: The magical orange juice carton tree!

This week’s ‘Only in the DR’ photo was sent to us by Sandra Alvarado and is as she describes it an “orange juice carton tree!”According to Sandra, these magical orange juice carton trees only grow on the side of road on the way to Constanza – I wonder what type of fertilizer they use to make the trees grew like this?

Of course, the actual trees aren’t really growing the orange juice cartons, but they have been tied there presumably by the sales man to attract attention to his store/tree. I think it’s a great idea – very unique! What I am wondering is – are the cartons empty or full? Does he take them down each night to stop them from being stolen or blown away? My guess is that they are empty ones and the ones for sale are stored somewhere a little more accesible/practical.

Does this count as littering? Or is it just good recycling? YOU DECIDE! Leave a comment below and let me know what you think!

Teeth of the Dog Golf Association Golf Tournament: Saturday July 31st

This Saturday the 31st of July, Casa de Campo’s Teeth of the Dog Golf Association is offering you the opportunity to play the Dye Fore golf course in one of the their tournaments before it is closed for maintenance from this Sunday August the 1st to August the 31st.

To play in this tournament you do have to be a member of the Teeth of the Dog Golf Association, but if you are not a member you can still play – you would just need to pay the tournament entry fee and your membership fee. Included in the yearly membership fee are a series of tournaments available only to members, a handicap as well as a complimentary round on Links and Dye Fore in the summer months.

Behind the scenes with the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders in Casa de Campo: a few more sexy photos!

The Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders’ visit to Casa de Campo back in May, was for many rather exciting and although it was a while ago and so a little bit like old news now – beautiful women and still beautiful women! So in this post I share with you some more photos of the lovely ladies during one of their photo shoots.

This particular photo shoot took place aboard ERH Marine’s Pershing yacht at Palmilla and was one of the most incredible experiences of my life; the girls were gorgeous and the whole process was exciting, fascinating and being on a boat is always fun! As I was there watching/staring, I was able to sneak a few ‘behind the scenes’ photos – slightly less glamouros than the ‘modelling’ photos, although annoyingly the girls seem to manage to look just as beautiful, even in hairnets (grrr). Here are my gallery of photos of the girls relaxing behind the scenes, getting their make-up done and just being effortlessly beautiful…

DJ Gem at Onno’s Bar: Saturday July 31st

This Saturday, Onno’s Bar in Altos De Chavon welcomes back the female DJ extraordinaire DJ Gem, as she begins her new monthly residency in Casa de Campo’s nighttime hotspot and also to help celebrate TripeoRD’s anniversary celebrate which
will be a complete riot!.

What she lacks in height, she makes up for in musical weight and good looks! Recently picked up as the official face of energy drink 911, DJ Gem’s reputation has been growing rapidly, and she always brings a crowd of energetic and happy people. Her ability to play the tracks that people can understand and enjoy is one of her strengths, along with the show that is DJ Gem, with girls as well as guys spending much of the night in awe of her style and grace on the turntables.

Onno’s has always maintained a high standard when it comes to DJs, from Dardhy who is now a resident at the mighty Imagine in Punta Cana, to current resident DJ Paul who is by most opinions the best DJ in La Romana. Onno’s proudly announces that DJ Gem is the newest DJ to enter that roster for a monthly rotation that will see some fresh new music added to the already great parties that Onno’s has been known for since the very begining.

This Saturday July the 31st will be the first installment of this monthly mayhem and what better way to close out a rainy month than with a ray of sunshine from this country’s rapidly rising talent, DJ Gem!

Palmilla, Palmilla – oh how we love thee! Palmilla is a natural swimming pool off the coast of Casa de Campo and just about everyone’s favourite place to kick back, relax or party! In this photo essay, we bring you photos of ‘classic’ palmilla scenes.

The Gathering a.k.a the Yacht-lot
Whether it’s a long weekend or a special holiday, there is always one scene you’re guaranteed to see on a busy Palmilla day and that’s the ‘Yacht-lot.’ The ‘Yacht-lot’ is the when all the yachts try to fit together to create a circle or central party area between all the yachts – people will spend literally a half hour trying to park their vessel, so that they’re in the midst of the action – being on the outside will simply not do!

Sea-Noodles and floaters – the manly way to drink champagne
Being at Palmilla is like being in one enormous party area, the yachts are the VIP areas and if you want to move around, socialise, meet people, the best and easiest way is to use a noodle or float – the only way to swim and still drink champagne.

Palmilla, just like everywhere else in Casa de Campo is ‘the place to be seen’ which if you’re a woman means you’re probably wearing your best, most expensive sunglasses, bikini, full make-up and if it’s a very important occasion (like New Year’s) freshly done hair – so actually getting in the sea is simply not an option. That’s why travelling my tender is so popular – it’s the perfect way to check out the party and have the party check out you!

Champagne, Champagne, Champage…..
Forget beer, spirits and wine, the drink of choice while living it up at Palmilla is ALWAYS Champagne, nothing else will do. On this particular trip we consumed in excess of 52 bottles – is that right?

Casa de Campo Living Reviews: The Salon de Belleza

Casa de Campo’s Salon de Belleza or Beauty Salon is everything a salon should be; clean, tidy, bright and most importantly relaxing!

The staff are so talented, friendly and efficient that you can relax with a magazine and a nice cup of tea and know that your hair and/or nails are in good hands!

I love this salon so much that I am doing a ‘Casa de Campo Living Review’ on it – so that all of you, my readers will be inspired to visit, maybe spice up your own hair style and treat yourselves to some really nice pampering!

Undoubtedly the best thing about this Salon is the people! Jhoanny and Dolares, the two hair stylists are just wonderful! They are very friendly, and always keen to please, of course, they are not the only 2 members of staff and all the ladies I have met in the Salon have been very pleasant, efficient and welcoming – it is their smiles and eagerness to please which makes this salon stand out as being so great! As well as the staff, I always enjoy chatting to the other ladies (men and children) who are there having their hair and nails done, everyone is always friendly and willing to gossip!

However, having friendly staff does not a good salon make! When I went to have my hair cut, coloured, styled and blow dried, Jhoanny very patiently went through all the different options, colour tints, hair styles and listened very carefully when I explained what I wanted – which must have been difficult as I wasn’t even sure what I wanted! In fact I was so indecisive that when I sat down and Jhoanny set to work on me I was a little worried I had been a little too vague, but Jhoanny seemed so confident that I relaxed and was more than happy reading my magazine until she was done!

In the end, I was thrilled with my hair cut, the colour and everything – despite my inability to explain what I wanted, Jhoanny did a superb job and my new hair cut/color was exactly what I wanted!

The Salon de Belleza, which used to be located in the main hotel area, has now moved – it is now on the road between the hotel and the Links/Teeth of the Dog golf pro shop, opposite from the lake.

The art studios by Emilio Robba, is a project that combines the designers’s experience and the artisans amazing craftsmanship to create premium pottery, tapestry and serigraphy sold in store at very competitive and negotiable prices. Now the store, which opened in Altos de Chavon last July, is holding it’s first ever sale!

To make way for new pieces which will be arriving from the workshops to the store in August, many items are now being sold at 20% off. The sale is rather extensive including assorted pieces from a range of their collections, ceramic pieces such as planters, pots, jewelry boxes and fruit vases, nicely glazed pieces in several colors and finishes and some very classy designs in unique organic colors.

Memories of Casa de Campo: Sweet Things in Casa

In this week’s ‘Memories of Casa de Campo’ post Carol Burke remembers the Casa de Campo bakery and teases us with photos and yummy stories about all the delicious cakes and cookies!

Life in Casa de Campo was sweet, both figuratively and literally. There were many chances each day to find a great dessert or sweet snack.

Casa de Campo often hosted food festivals. It seemed as though there were acres of cakes in the table full of fanciful desserts in every festival.

Every day, Café del Sol featured a selection of ice cream sundaes. These were so good. Icy ice cream covered in whipped cream, strawberry sauce, and walnuts on a hot day, what could beat that?

Of course, if you’re not really into sweets so much, just a little plate of cookies will do.

The three Dominican restaurants in Casa (El Patio, Lago Grill, and El Pescador) offered corn pudding as a dessert. The nice thing about corn pudding is that it is not overly sweet and the character of corn with cinnamon and coconut is ideal for a nutritious finale.

My sweet dream of the day at Casa de Campo used to be to have a big plate of chocolate éclairs, fruit tarts, marzipan, and Napoleons.

Sweet Dreams are Made of This

Napoleons are also known as Mille-feuille, or the thousand-leaf pastry. They are made from layers of puff pastry alternating with layers of custard, whipped cream or jam, and topped with white and chocolate fondant.

The fruit tarts were tiny pies with a custard filling on the bottom topped with fresh strawberries or mangos and finished with a sugar glaze.

Éclairs are made from pâté à choux dough which is a light pastry dough baked then filled with custard and topped with a chocolate glaze.

Marzipan is a confection made from sugar and almond meal. It is usually formed into cute animal or fruit shapes and sometimes used for icing and filling cakes.

The Casa de Campo bakery turned out hundred of these delicious pastries every day.

If you wanted to stay at hme and nurture the sweet tooth, one call to the Casa de Campo Room Service would deliver a platter of candies and cookies to the villa.

This Rainy Weekend in Casa: July 23rd – 25th

Rain, rain go away! As far as the rain is concerned there is good news and bad news. The good news (for the DR) is that ‘Tropical Storm Bonnie,’ which has been causing all this rain is now centered over the Bahamas and headed up across the end of Florida towards New Orleans. The bad news is that there is still a huge cloud hovering over the DR, which will surely cause even more rain! Amelia Vega filming her new music video in Casa de Campo!

Back in May, Amelia Vega was here in Casa de Campo filming her new music video for her song “Pasa un segundito,” which is fantastic and was officially released recently. Due to copyright and rules, we were not allowed to talk about or publish our photos of Amelia’s Casa de Campo visit before now.

Amelia Vega first found fame in 2003, when she was crowned Miss Universe and became the first Dominican to hold the title, she was also at the age of just 18, the youngest winner since 1994. Since winning her crown Amelia has had a varied career including modelling, presenting and acting and has now turned her considerable talents towards music. To read more about Amelia, click here.

Amelia is the niece of Juan Luis Guerra, a Dominican singer-songwriter most famous for his merengue music. Amelia made her first debut as a singer with uncle Juan Luis Guerra, their singer style and music is similar and no doubt Amelia will become as famous, successful and well-loved as him.

The video for her song ‘Pas un segundito’ was filmed mainly on Casa de Campo’s Playa Minitas in the private area to the side of the Beach Club by le Cirque restaurant, where myself, the film crew and a number of other curious spectators were able to watch the filming process. It was great to watch, I loved the song instantly so listening to it being played over and over again did not become tiresome and seeing the numerous cameras and many crew members needed to complete the filming was fascinating. I of course was keen to get as close as possible to get some good photos and kept having to dive out of the way of a camera which seemed to be swinging from the trees!

Some scenes for the video were filmed in the Altos de Chavon amphitheatre, which will next month see Alejandro Sanz in concert, and another scene was seemingly filmed in a Casa de Campo villa.

Only in the DR: El que lleva una laptop al cine

This week’s photo for the ‘Only in the DR’ post was contributed by Elizabeth Silfa, one of my pupils of the Abraham Lincoln School, who graduated this year.

I must admit that the photo itself isn’t exactly thrilling but what it is, is truely unbelievable – described by Elixabeth as ‘El que lleva una laptop al cine,’ which literally means ‘he (or rather the man) that takes his laptop to the cinema.’ So this man is in the cinema presumably to relax and enjoy a movie, whilst at the same time doing something on his laptop. WHY? What on earth was he doing?

I must say Elizabeth, although I am grateful for the photo, you should have gone and had a look, I definitely would have done – just before I would have told him to turn it off. Not only is this ridiculous, but it’s also rude!

But seriously what was he doing? Here are some options:

1. Working. This seems like the most obvious, but really? Reading the comments on this photo on Elizabeth’s Facebook, this is what most people seemed to think he was doing – one person even seemed to admire this guys dedication to his work. I say, LOSER!

2. Facebook. If we’re not working, then we’re on Facebook. Maybe he just had to update his Facebook status: “At cinema, watching a great movie and using my laptop, thats the way I roll…LOL”

There are endless other options, but whatever he was doing, he most definitely shouldn’t have been – someone call the cinema police and get this weirdo out of here!

‘Carlos Santiago: Virgenes del Trópico’ new art exhibit opens at the Altos de Chavon art gallery

On Thursday the 5th of August the Altos de Chavon art gallery will be celebrating the opening of yet another of it’s art exhibits, ‘Virgenes del Trópico’ by Carlos Santiago. The Altos de Chavon art gallery opens new exhibits about once a month and always celebrates the opening with an inauguration cocktail which everyone in Casa de Campo is cordially invited to attend. The inauguration cocktail will begin at 7:30PM and will as always be attended by Casa de Campo’s art aficionados, guests and of course the artist himself – the cocktail is always a great oppotunity to mingle and meet new people as well as question the artist about his paintings. Of course if you can’t attend the cocktail, you are welcome to visit the exhibit any other day – the gallery is open from 9:00AM to 6:00PM every day except Tuesdays and this exhibit will remain open until the 5th of September.

A little about Carlos Santiago and his exhibit ‘Vírgenes del Trópico’

Carlos Santiago is a young artist from Puerto Rico, who will be presenting some 20 oil paintings of the famous ‘Madonna,’ generally considered as religious. The artist, who was winner of the important ARANA scholarship studied in France for 12 months, from 2002 to 2003 in Paris, with the artist Daniel Fischer, where he also completed intensive courses in anatomical drawing. He has exhibited his work in galleries in his country, in Orlando, and West Palm Beach, Florida.

La Fundación Centro Cultural Altos de Chavón, se complace en invitarles a su próxima exposición “VIRGENES DEL TROPICO”, JUEVES, 5 de AGOSTO, a partir de las 7:30pm en la Galeria Principal.

El joven artista puertorriqueño presentará en Altos de Chavón unas 20 piezas pintadas en óleo sobre lienzo realizadas en 2010; se trata de una serie de madonnas consideradas religiosas por algunos y más bien familiares por otros.

Los críticos de la vecina isla ven en Santiago una de las más importantes promesas del arte boricua de todos los tiempos. El artista, quien fuera ganador de la importante beca ARANA para estudiar en Francia durante 12 meses, estuvo de 2002 a 2003 en Paris, estudiando con el artista Daniel Fischer, donde también realizó cursos intensivos de Dibujo Anatómico. Santiago es egresado del programa Educación del Arte con concentración en Pintura de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico e imparte docencia en varios centros educativos. Ha expuesto su obra en diversas galerías de su país, en Orlando, y en West Palm Beach, Florida. Fue artista exclusivo de la Galería Prinardi, de San Juan Puerto Rico.

Sus obras se encuentran en valiosas colecciones privadas de arte puertorriqueño, la farmaceútica Pfizer Inc. el Ritz Carlton Hotel, y la Cooperativa de Seguros Múltiples, entre otros.

‘Anecdotas de Opera Lirica’ at Lucas Restaurant, Saturday 24th July

This Saturday the 24th of July, Lucas Restaurant is hosting a special evening called ‘Anecdotas de Opera Lirica,’ which in English translates as ‘Anecdotes of Lyrical Opera.’ (Abajo en Español.)

Eva Cavalli at the Marina Casa de Campo (with me!)

I must admit that this photo is a little old, but given that Eva Cavalli is a celebrity I feel like the photo is worth publishing anyway!

Eva Cavalli was here in Casa de Campo (without her husband Roberto Cavalli) in April during the Farr 40 Rolex Regatta week, during which she attended a number of VIP events at a number of Casa de Campo villas. These VIP events were held to show the distinguished athletes and boat owners of the regatta a good time – Casa de Campo style! One such event was hosted by Ritmo Platinum and Eva was the honorary guest of the evening, to view my photos of this glamourous event, click here.

The above photo was taken on Saturday the 25th of April, which was the last day of the Farr 40 Rolex Regatta, followed by the VIP prize-giving and party held at the Victory Club for the sailors, boat owners and distinguished guests (and me!) Having worked and raced extremely hard during the regatta, the after-party was certainly a ‘lively’ affair – let’s say the sailors had a very good time! After the party at the Victory Club started to die down, a few of the more sober guests headed into the Marina’s Plaza Portofino, where most of the restaurants are – it was here in Cafe Juanita that we ran into Eva Cavalli and took the opportunity to get a quick photo.

Lokekeda, is a cute consignment store in La Romana, owned and ran by one of Casa de Campo’s Italian residents Emanuela Giovannetti and is full of everything you could possibly think of; clothes, jewelry, cosmetics, bags, kids toys, candles, furniture, electronics and more – literally ‘lo que queda!’

What is Lokekeda?

Lokekeda was created to deal with the changing demands and needs of shoppers who have been effected by the world’s economic crisis – Lokekeda is a way that you can legally recycle all your old/unwanted things, so that they can be sold to the people of La Romana at accessible prices! You get rid of your ‘junk’ and someone else buys it! Simple really!

Lokekeda accepts all kinds of new and used merchandise, from shoes to kids toys – contracts are made with Lokekeda for a minimum of 90 days, so that the item can be sold, after that time the ’seller’ can claim the item back or renew the contract.
