This Thursday the 23rd of May, the Abraham Lincoln School in La Romana will celebrate the opening of it’s annual art exhibit at the Altos de Chavón art gallery at the same time as the opening of the Festival de Primavera - and you are cordially invited to join the celebration.

The annual art exhibit presented by the students of the Abraham Lincoln School and their hardworking teachers is in my opinion one of the best exhibits presented in the Altos de Chavón art gallery each year; the colorful exhibit fills the gallery from top to bottom and beams with the promise and talents of the next generation! What’s not to love!?

This year, as every year, the art exhibit will present artworks from every student in the school from the tiny ones in the Pre-Kinder classes, whose adorable self-portraits and animal paintings you will fall in love with, to the sophisticated paintings, sketches and sculptures created by the budding artists of the upper school classes taught by Mr Adams, a talented artist himself.

The celebratory inauguration cocktail will begin from 7pm – we look forward to seeing you there!

Also taking place in Altos de Chavón this Thursday as part of the Festival de Primavera will be a theatrical performance “Asalto Pirata” by the Dominican Street Theater at 4:30pm,  an Interactive Workshop on Dominican Folkloric Dances at 5pm, as well as a String and Poetry Concert at 8:30pm!

Inauguration of the Abraham Lincoln School Art Exhibit

The Abraham Lincoln School Art Exhibit will be open at The Gallery in Altos de Chavón from Thursday May 24rd to June 3rd. The Gallery is open daily from 9am to 6pm, closed Wednesdays.

Hundreds of people, including friends, teachers and families of the students witnessed this important moment in the lives of these students. With the knowledge and skills they have acquired in Altos de Chavón, they now head out into the world to make a name for themselves and to continue to elevate the already excellent reputation of the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design, which has been graduating students from its two-year associate-degree program, affiliated with New York City’s prestigious Parsons “The New School For Design” since 1983.

The rector of the school, Stephen Kaplan, said to casadecampoliving.com that he feels very privileged to work with both Dominicans and foreigners at the school, and that over the years he has seen many talented youths, which it has been an honour to work with.

Around 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, the students made their grand entrance to the hall- where their family and friends were waiting for them- with the song “Freedom” sung by Nana Mouskouri, as background.

Each student wore a different color depending on their course specialism; red for fashion design, yellow for graphic design and dark blue for the fine arts students.

Following the the National Anthem and blessing by Father Victor Garcia of the San Antonio de Padua Parish and St. Stanislaus Cracobia, the master of ceremony, Carmen Lorente,-who is also the director of special projects in the New York office of the school-introduced the special guests.

These were Anne Gaines, the current director of the School of Arts, Media and Technology (AMT) at Parsons, New York; Adolfo Despradel, graduate of the Chavón School and current director of the Department of Design and Planning of Costasur, Melanie Reim, American illustrator and occasional instructor at the Chavón School of Design; Miguel Valenzuela, director of the National School of Visual Arts, and Ben Vencial Gil,  Dominican architect and founder of the Dominican Academy of Architecture and Urbanism (ACADA).

Among the most salient aspects of the event was the speech by Mrs. Melanie Reim- someone considered by Mr. Kaplan as  “a whirlwind of a teacher in Chavon”. Reim In her speech -full of dynamic and playful illustrations- urged graduates to  not be mediocre with their works. Also impactful was the presentation of valedictorian student graphic design graduate Jose Marte David Olivares, Summa Cum Laude, and the special thanks of a family who have all studied at the Altos de Chavon School of Design in different times of their lives.

At the end of the event at Flamboyan Conference Center, the students along with their guest went to The Gallery, in Altos de Chavon, where were their works were on exhibition and they enjoyed a refreshing cocktail.

These wonderful structures, which can be wood, metal or even plastic, are widely used across the Dominican Republic, especially, in the gardens and terraces of Casa de Campo. Not only are the beautiful, a place for flowers to flourish, but they also provide shade from the warm Caribbean sun.

“In our country, the Dominican Republic, pergolas are used often -because apart  giving us shade- they protection and shelter”, says interior designer Nina Katherine to casadecampoliving.com.

Nina says that this arquitectural element is commonly used in open spaces where you want to create shade or create a transition between an indoor and and outdoor area.

Pergolas may have a “showed structure” – meaning they can be seen through, something which is commonly used in gardens and to provide shelter for outdoor jacuzzis, pools and terraces…

“Another idea for use pergolas is to keep it enclosed to prevent the passage of excessive light and for privacy. An option that many designers and landscapers recommend is the use of climber plants to give a sense of intimacy and increase the surface of the shade”, she adds.

Trellises are commonly used in the design of pergolas -these are a flat structures created by an open lattice, which support climbing plants.

In Casa de Campo there are a variety of pergolas distributed throughout the complex. There are some beautiful ones in Altos de Chavon – just behind Rusticos y Mas as well as in the garden area, in many Casa de Campo villas, at the Casa de Campo Hotel and at the entrance of every apartment building in Los Altos. They are decorated with beautiful climbing plants and flowers.

There can be no doubt that the simple pergola brightens and beautifies the Casa de Campo resort wherever we look!

Of the 150 people, who requested the surgery, 60 were selected to benefit from a variety of corrective surgeries like reconstruction and tendon transposition, arthroplasty, osteotomy, and removal of osteosynthesis material.

The surgeries -part of an ongoing series of “operativo medicos” ran annually by the Central Romana Corporation- were performed by a team of doctors who came to the country from the United States led by Dr. Michael Murphy, of Union Memorial Hospital, in Baltimore, MD, while in this case, Dr. Edward Shaw Wilgins guided the surgeries in the country.

According to the hospital, Dr. Edward started this “operativo medico” focused on hands surgeries more than 15 years ago, to benefit patients living in the bateys and other nearby communities of the greater La Romana area. 

“I first came to the country when I was invited by the Patronato Benéfico Oriental in La Romana to meet several cases of hand reconstructive surgeries in children from the Hogar del Niño. It was an experience of great satisfaction for me,” said Dr. Wilgins.

In his opinion, most of surgeries performed produce a significant improvements in the lives of patients seen.“I remember a case of syndactyly in a six-month-old, whose fingers were united. After the surgery his fingers were free and he could start to holdthings”, said Dr. Wilgins.

Dr. Edward Shaw Wilgins expressed his enthusiasm to continue his work with the Dominican doctors of Central Romana Hospital, whom he described as excellent professionals and great colleagues, including Dr. José López director of the hospital, Dr. Isabel Leon, chief of surgical, and Dr. Victor Carvajal, anaesthesiologist.

During his time on the “operativo medico”, he talked about the impressive new modern infrastructure of the new “Centro Médico” Central Romana Hospital which opened in 2011. “The conditions of the new hospital are great, comparable with any hospital of United States”, he said.

Dominican Minister of Culture José Antonio Rodríguez also recently announced the “Aldea Cultural Santa Rosa de Lima” (cultural village), a project which is taking the old “La Fortaleza” jail overlooking the Salao river and the Casa de Campo – La Romana tourist port and converting it into a center for fine arts, a naval museum and an amphitheatre as well as an exhibit on the tabacco industry – one of the attractions directed towards tourists.

On Thursday afternoon the group of participants, amongst them Ana Garcia, President of the La Romana – Bayahibe Tourism Cluster, gathered at the Dominicus Palace Hotel for the talk with Kate Wallace, an American who came to the country 19 years ago as a Peace Corps volunteer, and who has been amazed at the great diversity of birds that exist in Dominican Republic.

During the talk, Mrs. Wallace showed the audience different pictures of endemic (native) and migrating birds that can be seen easily in the Parque Nacional del Este (just a few minutes drive from Casa de Campo resort) and talked about their importance and their characteristics.

The delight of the audience to see the photos of the birds was immediate. Many of them were laughing and enthusiastic – because they had already seen most of them, but it was interesting to find out their names and discover a little more about each one.

Wallace, who currently lives in the Bahoruco mountains, in the South of the Dominican Republic, highlighted the importance of birds in the Dominican Republic by citing the example that in the United States a total of approximately 612 different types of birds can be found, of which only one is endemic, while in the Dominican Republic there is approximately 300 different types of which 32 are endemic!

Kate Wallace, considers herself as an amateur in birds, but despite that she has written a lot about the birds found on the island of Hispaniola and specifically in the Dominican Republic. She also created a brochure a few years ago with the different types of birds that can be observed in Casa de Campo resort.

From 7:30am on Friday the 10th of May, Wallace led a “bird-walk” through the Guaraguao Protection Center in Bayahibe, part of the Parque Nacional del Este.

Unfortunately it rained from early morning, so that the number of birds we were able to observe was less than normal (they stay in their nests when it rains). However, we were able to see a Pájaro Bobo, Ruiseñor, Cuervo, Petrigre, Julián Chivi, Carpintero and Cigua Palmera….but the biggest cheer was for the Barrancolí, a tiny green bird with red and yellow accents, which, explained Wallace is one of the most beautiful endemic birds found in the Dominican Republic.

On the walk, Wallace explained about the sounds birds make. As each bird has it’s own individual song, an enthusiast can know what birds are in the area just by listening. Also, many birds have been named after the sound it makes, for example, the Julian Chivi emits a sound like “jualianchivi, julianchivi”.

This trail is a hidden beauty within the Parque Nacional del Este. The main entrance is next to the Cadaques hotel, in Dominicus. During the tour visitors will have the experience of walking in the tropical forest observing forest type, the different species of plants, orchids, bromeliads, and animals like birds, reptile, insects and other arthropods.  The final destination on the tour is Cueva del Puente (Cave of the Bridge), which has pictographs created by the Tainos (the Pre-Columbian Indigenous peoples of the Dominican Republic). Total walking time is approximately 4 hours (round-trip) – so we suggest you go with comfortable shoes and don’t forget your camera!

Interactive, thrilling and exciting! On Thursday afternoon the 23rd of May, the theatrical performance of “Pirate Assault” by the Dominican Street Theater group promises to be something fun for all ages!

Yet another component of the fun-filled schedule of the Festival de Primavera being celebrated in Altos de Chavón from the 23rd to the 26th of May, “Pirate Assault” directed by Prof. Carlota Carretero playfully tells the story of famous pirate Francis Drake.

Also taking place in Altos de Chavón on Thursday the 23rd of May as part of the Festival de Primavera is the Dominican Folk Dance Workshop (5pm at the Altos de Chavón Regional Museum of Archeology), the cocktail opening of the Abraham Lincoln School Art exhibit (7pm at The Gallery) as well as a String and Poetry Concert with the Quinteto Mirabal and poetry read by Sandra Mustelier (8:30pm at the “Fish Fountain”).

All these events make the opening night of the Festival de Primavera an excellent evening to be in Altos de Chavón – and after all that excitement why not stay in Chavón for a bite to eat? You could try Altos de Chavón newest restaurant, The Club Riverside Steakhouse or enjoy some casual dining at Onno’s Bar!

I have been visiting Casa de Campo since 1996 and have seen the incredible growth it has taken over the past 17 years.

My husband’s family has a home here and we spend many of our vacations enjoying time with family and friends.

Casa de Campo is a magical place for our family as it has something for everyone to enjoy. From playing tennis or golf, horse back riding, going to the beach, boating, visiting Altos de Chavon, zip lining, going to the movies at the Marina Casa de Campo, yoga, work out, spinning and eating at all the various restaurants.

 My mother in laws live in Santo Domingo and come every weekend to Casa de Campo.. Lily, my sister in law, recently moved to Miami. My parents live in Caracas and I have 4 siblings who live in California, Singapore, Washington and Mexico. Juan, better known as Bibi, and I live in Miami with our two sons JJ and Marcelo. JJ is 14 years old and will be entering 9th grade next year and Marcelo is 11 and will be in 6 grade next year.

But now as Casa de Campo and Altos de Chavón have announced the program for the Festival de Primavera (May 23rd – May 26th), you now have a new Mother’s Day option! Besides celebrating all weekend with your mother and entire family at the Festival de Primavera (a magnificent celebration of Dominican music and art – click here for the complete program) – you can end your Mother’s day weekend La Piazzetta in Altos de Chavón – for brunch or dinner.

Brunch (US$38 for adults and US$22 for children) will be served from 9am to 4pm at La Piazzetta. You will be able to treat your mother to a selection of fresh fruits, cereals, breads, salads, eggs, potatoes, vegetables, beef, roast leg of pork, as well as a delicious selection of cakes!

Before or after Brunch you will also be able to enjoy the Dominican arts and crafts fair which will be open in Altos de Chavón as part of the Festival de Primavera on Thursday the 23rd of May from 3pm to 7pm as well as on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 24th, 25th and 26th of May from 10am to 6pm.

The special Mother’s Day dinner menu will be served from 6pm – 11pm and includes a delicious selection of La Piazzetta’s most popular dishes – including their famous “Antipasto”.

Since the the Marina Casa de Campo fishing season started in February this year – there have been more than 500 Blue Marlin releases! With an average release per day of 7 blue marlins in the more than 70 days since the start of the season! With stats like that there is no doubt that Casa de Campo is not just an internationally great place for golf – but for fishing too!

Known as the “king of the sea” (at least among fishing enthusiasts), the blue marlin is the most sought after of all the marlin species. With spectacular fighting ability and an average weight of 125 to 250 pounds, blue marlins are a prize catch and as such have inspired the dedication of anglers worldwide. Which is why fisherman from across the world are attracted to the Marina Casa de Campo to catch Blue Marlin between March and mid-June every year. It is customary to catch, measure and release Blue Marlin (and other billfish) – so that it can be caught again.

Throughout the 2013 season, fishing boats reported releasing up to 11 blue marlin per day – with the total number of blue marlin releases now topping over 500, making the 2013 Marina Casa de Campo one of the most successful ever.

Accordingly to the Marina Casa de Campo, approximately 20 international fishing vessels have taken part in this year’s fishing season – with even more expected to arrive to enjoy fishing throughout the month of June.

So far the Marina Casa de Campo welcomed back old friends of the “Therapy”, “Fa-la-me”, “Blue Heaven”, “Alican”, “Betsy”, “Chach”, “Liquid Gold, “C’est la vie”, “Ambush”, “Caroline”, “Chasin’ tail”, “Shark Byte”, “Canyon Gear” and “Uno más” fishing boats, as well as a crowd of new boats; “Impulse”, “Nemesis”, “Shoe”, “Double Barrel”, “Old reliable” and “Over easy”, among others.

Among the fine captains and anglers enjoying fishing at the Marina Casa de Campo this season were; Ed Thompson, Rich Barret, Frank Rodriguez, Rob Moore, Robert “Butch” Cox, Tim Richardson, Albert Miller, Robert “Cujo” Brinkmeyer, John Cochrane and Mike Brauser.

Whether you are Dominican, have lived in the Dominican Republic a long time or are tourist – it’s pretty likely that your knowledge of Dominican folk dance is pretty limited… there are at least 10 different types of folkloric dances that you probably haven’t even heard of!

As part of the Festival de Primavera celebration of Dominican art, music and dance, YOU are cordially invited to discover and experience Dominican folk dance in an interactive workshop at the Altos de Chavón Regional Museum of Archeology on Thursday May 23rd at 5:00pm.

The workshop led by Prof. Xiomarita Perez, consultant and professor of Dominican folklore promises to share with participants samples of today’s different dances.

The folk dances to be explored include; congos, salandunga, palos, gaga, comarca, carabiné, mangulina, merengue, guloya and pripri.

Later this week, on Saturday May 18th, the students of the 29th class of the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design will be celebrating their graduation at the Casa de Campo Flamboyan Conference Center – and from 12:30pm they will be at The Gallery proudly showing off their works to their friends and families. This gathering is open to the public, but with a crowd of more than 600 anticipated it is recommended that perhaps you may like to visit at a different time – so that you may really be able to appreciate the collection of artworks.

On Sunday May 19th the show will be taken down and a pared down version will travel to the Altos de Chavón Gallery in Santo Domingo, where it will remain during the summer months.

It’s an amazing display of youthful talent – and many works are for sale through the school. If you love art, often cutting edge work, work that is both skilled and exuberant, this is the show for you. Hundreds of pieces are on display, including works of sculpture. With so much to display, an additional annex of large paintings will be on exhibit in the space formerly known as the “Giacosa restaurant”, which has been generously lent to the school by the owners, who also own the The Club Riverside Steakhouse.

If you love art – the graduate thesis show is not to be missed. Here you will see the future Dominican luminaries of art and design, NOT TO BE MISSED!

Also taking place this week is Estilo 2013, the fashion show presented by the fashion design students of the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design, Friday, 8pm at the Casa de Campo Flamboyan Conference Center. Click here for more details.

Having attended many Café de la Leche gatherings herself over the last 11 years, this was surprisingly Claudia’s first time as hostess of the occasion, but as the beautiful blonde dressed in the cutest jump suit welcomed guests with ease and elegance it was clear that Claudia possesses the same sense of hospitality which comes so naturally to the Dominican people.

The cousin of Xiomarita Matos, President of the Hogar del Niño and therefore the niece of Xiomarita’s mother, Xiomara Menendez founder of the Patronato Benefico Oriental, umbrella foundation for the Hogar del Niño, Claudia is naturally a great supporter of the Hogar del Niño cause, an educational and daycare facility in La Romana, which also runs an incredible college sponsorship program.

Amongst the many glamorous guests were Nicole Lopez Baker and Gueri Garcia, graduates of the Hogar del Niño, who thanks to the Hogar del Niño’s College Sponsorship Scheme have been studying architecture in San Pedro de Macoris – and now nearing the end of their course have just won another scholarship and are off to Argentina for their final project! Congratulations to them both – we look forward to hearing more about you soon!

Also amongst the group was Meri Hirose, who will be working at the Hogar del Niño for the next 2 years at their special unit which caters for 75 hearing impaired and blind students, as well as Maria Battle, a Dominican Visual Artist and Musician, who as part of her “Muse Seek Project”, a combination of music, poetry and paintings, will soon start a new program for these pupils called “Music and the Senses”.

The Cafe de la Leche is a monthly charitable event, a little like a coffee or a tea party held for the ladies of Casa de Campo (although men are occasionally invited) and usually takes place on the first Friday of the month, hosted by a member of the Casa de Campo villa at her Casa de Campo villa or occasionally restaurant/business.

This camp focuses on learning through doing. It will explore themes of pre-Columbian archeology and art, with dynamic games and workshops that lead to exploration, communication and social interaction amongst the children.

Activities will take place in different areas of the museum, including their special “discovery” room designed to represent the life of the Tainos, which is filled with a variety of learning tools. Other activities will take place outside around Altos de Chavon.

Words from Taino language, symbols, customs, techniques and more… there is so much to learn about our ancestors!

This educational and fun camp held in at the Altos de Chavón Regional Museum of Archeology Archaeological is just one of the options available to little ones in Casa de Campo this summer. Other options include the Casa de Campo Summer Camp (June 24th to August 2nd) and the Golf and Tennis Academy – Casa de Campo’s first residential camp experience (July 14th to July 27th
& July 28th to August 10th.)

Our participation in the marathon was driven by our desire to lead a healthier lifestyle. Running doesn’t just reward the body with physical health benefits, it rewards the mind too! Of course, to reach your potential as a runner and accomplish something “impossible” like completing a race, you need a support group – cheerleaders when you are not in the mood to exercise. Since the end January we have been meeting twice a week after work to train for the race as a group. One Saturday we even walked all the way to Higueral!! The satisfaction of watching each and every participant from the Clínica de Familia La Romana team finish the race they started (in personal record-breaking time!) is something I will never forget.

On a more global scale our goal was to raise awareness about HIV-tuberculosis (TB) co-infection, which has been the focus of my research for the past 8 months. The Dominican Republic is believed to have one of the highest rates of TB in the Americas, according to the World Health Organization. It is estimated by some researchers that between 6 and 11 percent of those with TB in the Dominican Republic also are infected with HIV, presenting a dual challenge. HIV-TB co-infection is particularly prevalent in populations with limited resources and limited access to care, which are closely linked to poverty and discrimination. One of the most difficult realities of this urgently needed research is that at present our efforts often come too late. Dealing with the passing of a favorite co-infected patient here in La Romana will unquestionably influence the care I provide to my patients for my entire career.

As I wrap up my clinical research project here in La Romana, I want to say thank you – thank you to the people of La Romana for welcoming me into their lives (shout out to Rebecca and Philip!!!) and to Clínica de Familia La Romana, who became nothing short of family to me during the past year. I will miss everyone dearly and go back to the states singing the praises of the Dominican Republic.

The Festival de Primavera being organised by Casa de Campo with the Dominican Ministry of Culture, promises to be a magical celebration of Dominican art, music and culture and is sponsored by Central Romana Corporation, Costasur and Silgon Inc. with Casa de Campo Living. The performance of the Dominican National Symphonic Orchestra will be directed by Maestro José Antonio Molina, the first Dominican to have been named chief conductor of an orchestra in the United States; the Greater Palm Beach Symphony. Molina’s other accolades include being director and and principal arranger for the Pavarotti and Friends concerts and he has directed the Spanish director José Carreras in a gala concert in this country, as well as a concert with Gloria Estefan at the Vatican.

On this occasion, Maestro José Antonio Molina will lead the National Symphonic Orchestra through a program starting with one of his own compositions; Overture “YAYA”, to be followed by Gershwins “Catfish Row” (originally called “Suite from Porgy and Bess”), “Selecciones de las Estaciones” by Antonio Vivaldi, ending with another of José Antonio Molina own works; “Fantasia Merengue”.

As with all activities of the Festival de Primavera, the concert with the Dominican National Symphonic Orchestra is completely free – complimentary tickets will be available at the Casa de Campo Villa Owners Club and the Altos de Chavón amphitheater office.

The emergency service care offered, 24 hours a day, seven days a week by Central Romana’s Centro Medico (the Central Romana Hospital) is outstanding – a topic discussed in an interview with Dr. José López Larache, the Health Vice President of Central Romana & Director of the Centro Médico.

Dr. Lopez told casadecampoliving.com, that the hospital is equppied with state-of-the-art ambulances and training paramedics on call 24 hours a day. There is an ambulance permanently stationed within the Casa de Campo resort, and there are three stationed at the Centro Médico.

“We are pioneers, I am sure, in critical care medicine in the country. Nobody is more efficient than us,” said Dr, Lopez with pride.

Dr. José López Larache has been the director of the hospital for 14 years. He studied medicine at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), in Santo Domingo, and then specialized in New York, United States.

When questioned about what other ways the Centro Médico (Central Romana Hospital) stands out above other medical facilities in the country, Dr. Lopez spoke about hygiene and the cleanliness maintained in the medical center.

By adopting American standards and products to clean all the hospital rooms, they are able to ensure strict bacterial control, which limits infection.

He also mentioned their excellent practices of waste incineration, which prevents infections being transfered from patients and staff, as well as their environmental control chain – air conditioning in all rooms. In addition, he talked about the continuing education program for all medical staff and nurses.

In terms of technological resources, Dr. Lopez called the Central Romana Hospital a “core diagnostic center,” where X-rays, CT scans, sonograms and mammograms, as well as other procedures can be performed 24 hours a day – without patients ever needing to leave the hospital.

In the rare occasion that “se fue la luz” (there is a power-cut), the hospital has it’s own power generator. Other facilities the Doctor is particularly proud of is their neonatal intensive unit, two delivery suits and specialized operating room for caesarean section deliveries, as well as the MRI machine – the only one in the East of the Dominican Republic. There is no doubt that Dr. Lopez and his staff are committed to Central Romana’s philosophy of “serving the people no matter their circumstances“.

“Everyone who comes for help is helped -and then we do the paperwork, according to the policies of Central Romana,” said Dr. Lopez explaining that patients are not refused because they have no health insurance.

To further enhance the hospital’s medical service, Dr. Lopez told us that they are trying to buy a new high-generation scanner, a piece of equipment which will allow doctors to see closely into a patient’s heart; arteries and ventricles as well as lungs and blood vessels. This scanner will aid the diagnosis of coronary disease, which causes heart failure.

The Centro Médico (Central Romana Hospital) currently has a team of 72 doctors and 78 nurses, serving in various medical specialties such as neurosurgery, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiology, pediatrics, general and internal medicine, ophthalmology and dermatology, among others.

About the new “Centro Médico”

Central Romana’s new hospital; the “Centro Médico”, boasts three levels with lifts, a helipad for medical emergencies, 84 beds in comfortable private and semi-private rooms, four surgical suites with the latest medical equipment and technology, with one operating room equipped with the “Olympus Endo Alpha Smart” a system used for keyhole (laparoscopic) general surgery, two intensive care and coronary units, allowing patients to be under continuous monitoring and even a specialized burn unit with specialist bathing equipment, as well as a Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, a full clinical laboratory, a fully remodeled ER (emergency area), a 24 hour pharmacy and Café.

The new Central Romana Medical Center has a thousand kilowatt electrical generator, a steam boiler, hot water and a water treatment system and additional facilities include a modern system of security cameras in all common areas, a sprinkler system in case of fire, fire-resistant doors and stairs for emergency access routes on each floor.

The “Centro Médico”, was designed by Cottin Malcolm Architects, from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, and Silvia Sanchez staff of the Engineering Department of the Central Romana Corporation, Ltd., who was responsible for the construction work.
