This year’s theme for Estilo 2013 was “Future/Classic” and the show was a celebration of chiaroscuro, black and white with bold colors and metallic accents. There was a ready-to-wear collection and a spectrum of romantic silhouettes for gala evenings, both for men and women.

The following is an article written by Stephen Kaplan, the dean of the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design, about the Estilo 2013 fashion show. 

Estilo 2013: The Altos de Chavón School of Design Fashion Show: Future/Classic by Stephen Kaplan

 “Back to the future” was the inspirational idea behind this year’s splendid presentation of the work of the Fashion Design students at The Altos de Chavón School of Design. Looking at the pieces on the runway at Casa de Campo’s Salón Flamboyán on Friday, May 17, one must keep in mind that they were the senior thesis projects of students who had studied fashion design for only eight months and were the equivalent of college sophomores. Their teacher and the department coordinator, Alida León, a graduate of Parsons in New York, had been working in the fashion industry, and this was her first teaching position. And despite all that, the show was a standout, remarkable in 29 years of fashion shows, many of which were extraordinary.

The ready-to-wear daytime looks were created under the supervision of designer Joel Diaz. They were intricately crafted confections in blinding white accented by hand stitching, coral embroidery, piping, or appliqué. The results were handsome, wearable, and rich in detail—crowd pleasers on all counts.

Next on the X-shaped runway was the menswear. Again we were in the realm of light and shadow, white and black and grey or metallic. Some jackets were elegantly gathered and draped on the front closure. There were quirky and Star Trek–inspired fashions for the guys, as well as stunning, unexpectedly subtle, soft jackets. José Jhan was the guest critic who worked with the students to put together this masculine collection.

The evening collection was a tour de force. These flowing works of runway art were show stoppers, recalling Hollywood of the 1940s and at the same time some futuristic vision of glamour. The pieces were all in chiaroscuro and elaborately constructed in bold, luscious, and shockingly expensive fabrics. The finishes were impeccable, the cut and fall of the garments liquid in motion. These haute couture masterpieces of student invention, overseen by Julio Marcano, were truly worthy of the runways of Milan or Paris.

This fashion night to remember marked the beginning of careers for these 18 young designers with pure visual fireworks. The show came together under the relentless, perfectionist eye of Alida León, the program’s coordinator. Brava Alida, and kudos to the Chavón fashion graduates.

The beat of the drum announced the arrival of a troupe of drummers in the Chavón Main Plaza – part of the Dominican Street Theatre group, who began the Festival with their performance “Assault Pirate”. In a playful and interactive way, the young actors made use of the entire and even involved children and youngsters from the audience to recreate the history of Pirate Francis Drake. Casa de Campo little ones were thrilled to get involved and improvise along with the actors!

After the show, culture consultant, Xiomarita Pérez, held a folk dance interactive workshop within the Altos de Chavón Regional Museum of Archaeology. Xiomarita, accompanied by 2 couples showed to the audience some traditional dances of the Dominican Republic. People were very attentive, especially a boy named Oliver, who was so interested he continually asked questions. The most exciting part of the workshop was when a young girl from the crowd visiting from San Pedro de Macorís- after much insistence- danced a masterly Gagá with the dancers. To be honest – I even felt like dancing too!

A little later in the evening the good times continued at The Gallery where the art work of children and young students of the Abraham Lincoln School showed their drawings and creations made throughout the year to their parents. Soon we will publish a full article with more photos!

And finally, there was no better way to end the evening than with the String and Poetry concert ith Quinteto Mirabal with Sandra Mustelier at the “Fish Fountain”. The beautiful melodies of violins and cello accompanied by lovely poetry was a magical way to end the first evening of the Festival de Primavera.

Also part of  the celebration was an arts and crafts fair, where you can buy cute Dominican hand made creations. This arts and crafts fair opened yesterday and will stay open until Sunday May 26th and can be found in front of Emilio Robba´s Art Studio-which is offering specials discounts-as well as live pottery demonstrations!

The Festival de Primavera, has been organised by Casa de Campo with the Dominican Ministry of Culture, the festivities continue all weekend, with the the National Symphonic Orchestra conducted by the great José Antonio Molina TONIGHT (Friday) as well as the ENDANZA dance performance TOMORROW (Saturday) – both at the Altos de Chavón amphitheater.

“Assault Pirate” by the Dominican Street Theater

“Assault Pirate” was a 15-minute show performed by the Dominican Street Theater performing under the direction of Dominican actress Carlota Carretero. Its actors are young people aged 20 – 30 years, graduates of the National School of Dramatic Arts.

Interactive folk dance workshop with Xiomarita Pérez

During this workshop the audience were taught different ways to dance typical Dominican folk dances; Congos, Palos, Sarandunga, Comarca, Gagá, Guloya, Carabiné, Mangulina, Priprí and Merengue. Many of these dances, said Xiomarita, are performed in religious rites and others at parties and celebrations. Expect soon an article about all the teachings of Xiomarita Pérez during the workshop and more photos!

The Abraham Lincoln School Art Exhibit 

The annual exhibition was officially opened last night Thursday May 23 among the joyous laughter and joy of this young artists of the future. The group from the School Abraham Lincoln were accompanied by their proud parents and teachers, as well as a group of art aficionados who never miss an opening of a new exhibit at the gallery!

The String and Poetry Concert

Under a full and beautifully unforgettable moon, illuminating every musical note, the Quinteto Mirabal and Sandra Mustelier delighted the audience with their beautiful poetry and music.

Young musical spirit is invading Altos de Chavón during this Festival de Primavera! This Sunday May 26th, the Dominican Winds Orchestra will for the first time perform in the main plaza of Altos de Chavon, starting at 7:30 pm.

The Dominican Wind Orchestra is a symphony band composed of 55 instrumentalists of the highest musical level, selected through a national competition, with an average age of between 12 and 25 years old. Each group lasts for 2 years, after which general auditions are held again.

The 55 young talented wind musicians of the Dominican Wind Orchestra will bring the Festival de Primavera 2013 to a spectacular close with a marvellous program of 12 pieces including “Conga del Fuego” by Arturo Márquez, “Santo Domingo” by Ñico Lora and “Leña” by Luis Alberti.

The aim of the Dominican Wind Orchestra is to be a space for the development of musical creativity achieving continuous training of its members, promoting understanding and appreciation of different musical manifestations as part of the integral formation of young musicians.

The Festival de Primavera, which started last night has been organised by Casa de Campo with the Dominican Ministry of Culture, the festivities continue all weekend, with the the National Symphonic Orchestra conducted by the great José Antonio Molina TONIGHT (Friday) as well as the ENDANZA dance performance TOMORROW (Saturday) – both at the Altos de Chavón amphitheater. 

As with all activities of the Festival de Primavera, the Dominican Wind Orchestra concert is completely free – complimentary tickets are available at the Casa de Campo Villa Owners Club.

The following is an article written by Stephen Kaplan, the dean of the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design, in honor of the students’s (now graduate) Senior Thesis.

How can it be so good, year after year? by Stephen Kaplan

A delicately rendered master drawing of a reclining ingénue in baby-doll lingerie, her head resting on a pillow that’s a baby manatee. A huge artwork composed entirely of an intricate mosaic of sea grape leaves trimmed into perfect squares, doused in varnish, and glued to the canvas, so that their veining forms the linear elements of the piece. These are just two highlights of this year’s Fine Arts students’ work at The Altos de Chavón School of Design’s 29th senior thesis exhibition. The show opened on Wednesday evening at the Chavón Gallery and at an ad hoc annex across the plaza, in the former Giacosa restaurant.

The exhibition also includes wall after wall of the Graphic Design students’ impeccable work on typographic posters, and coffee-table books designed and photographed entirely by the students. Pedestals showcase a series of cigar-box designs done for Davidoff, each box celebrating the art of a renowned Dominican painter. The professional quality of the work, the detailed presentation, and the thoughtful and thought-provoking concepts make for a show that speaks to the employability of this group as well as to their adventurous spirit—a perfect marriage of technical skill and creative freedom.

The Illustration students’ take on the Little Red Riding Hood story displays fresh and humorous interpretations, while the sketches from their on-site illustration class bristle with energy and life. The students’ originality and personal perspective predominates in these idiosyncratic, erratic, and knowledgeable drawings; they are a joy to see. The sketches come together in a short, witty, and astute video animation of Euro-tourists twitching tepidly to a hot Dominican merengue beat in the plaza.

And Chavón’s large and dedicated Fashion Design class comes through with more clothes and more conceptions of fashionable dressing than we have seen in years. The theme, Future Classic, has given the students the chance to interlace history and futuristic projections in wearable and wise dressing. Menswear is represented along with gala dresses and daytime outfits. Unforgettable is a three-quarter-length dress made of cream-colored seam binding that has been painstakingly hand appliquéd onto a mesh background; the result looks like a leafless forest against a winter sky. There’s also a confection in black lace that seems to be a walking mantilla. The fashion illustrations, the draped manikins in the lobby of Casa de Campo’s Salón Flamboyán, and the parade of garments on the runway all reflect the students’ understanding of proportion and the fall of fabric that they bring to today’s fashion.

Sixty students were graduating this year, and they have won more than US$240,000 in scholarships to continue their studies at Parsons. The show was on displayed in Chavón from May 15 to 20 and then moved to The School of Design’s Facility at 50 Calle Gustavo Mejía Ricart, in Santo Domingo, until the fall. It is not to be missed.

We keep asking ourselves how it is possible that year after year, the quality of our students’ work seems to get better and better.

The excellent quality and variety exhibited is a testament to the outstanding talent of the students (who have now graduated), but also to the exceptional teaching and quality of education provided at the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design. About the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design

A component of The Altos de Chavón Cultural Center Foundation, a U.S. 501(c)(3) public charity, the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design has been graduating students from its two-year associate-degree program, affiliated with New York City’s prestigious Parsons “The New School For Design” since 1983.

Three majors are offered: Graphic Design, Fashion Design, and Fine Arts/Illustration. In addition, The School has developed a state-of-the-art Certificate Program in Digital Design.

The Festival de Primavera being organised by Casa de Campo with the Dominican Ministry of Culture, promises to be a magical celebration of Dominican art, music and culture and is sponsored by Central Romana Corporation, Costasur and Silgon Inc. with Casa de Campo Living.

The National School of Dance, part of the Dominican Ministry of Culture, under the direction of Ninoska Velázquez, is responsible for training and educating dancers of a technical-professional level in the different aspects of Dance Education; classical, contemporary and folk. These novice dancers will then later receive further dance training with the Dominican National Ballet, the National Folkloric Ballet or the Contemporary Dance Group.

As with all activities of the Festival de Primavera, the “Tiempos de ENDANZA” show is completely free – complimentary tickets are available at the Casa de Campo Villa Owners Club and the Altos de Chavón amphitheater office.

Recently I popped into Shine for a serious pampering session. Normally I don’t treat myself, but my hair was starting to look seriously bedraggled so I didn’t have much choice – and so at the insistence of Yovanka Saladin, one of the owners and founder of Shine I let the experts of Shine take over and revive my look.

We started with the “LPG Machine” (modeled right by Beba). This “miracle” machine uses a fast vibration technique to stimulate your cells – so that they start to produce more collagen – which is what keeps our face elastic and wrinkle-free when we are younger, but something we start to loose as we get older – hence the appearance of wrinkles. Before giving it a go I wasn’t convinced, however, the process is completely painless, natural and actually rather relaxing, so although I am yet to see any results (you wouldn’t expect to after just 1 session) – I would give it another go.

You too can give it a go now – at 30% off! Throughout May in celebration of Mother’s Day, Shine is selling the package of 10 (45 minute) sessions for US$350 or RD$14,000. In your first session the “médico fisiatra”, Glenny Germann (who is excellent), will talk to you about what you want to achieve and help you plan a course of action. Depending on what you want and your needs – you may have your sessions on consecutive days, once every 48 hours, twice a week etc. This way you can hope to see the best results.

As soon as I find the time – I plan on doing my 10 sessions with “before” and “after” shots – so you can judge for yourselves the results.

Next the ladies of Shine, took me into their capable hands, refreshed me with some fresh pineapple juice and got to work on my hair and nails.

The team at Shine really are excellent at making you feel relaxed and like a princess, as they snipped, painted, colored, washed, and blow dried the took care of my every need and whim – from fetching water and magazines to helping me with my sandals and answering the phone with wet nails.

By the end of it all, my skin felt great – perhaps I was feeling results of the LPG machine after all – my hair soft, silky and smooth and perfectly styled and my nails a gorgeous (and very sexy) red!

This Thursday the 23rd of May, the Abraham Lincoln School in La Romana will celebrate the opening of it’s annual art exhibit at the Altos de Chavón art gallery at the same time as the opening of the Festival de Primavera - and you are cordially invited to join the celebration.

The annual art exhibit presented by the students of the Abraham Lincoln School and their hardworking teachers is in my opinion one of the best exhibits presented in the Altos de Chavón art gallery each year; the colorful exhibit fills the gallery from top to bottom and beams with the promise and talents of the next generation! What’s not to love!?

This year, as every year, the art exhibit will present artworks from every student in the school from the tiny ones in the Pre-Kinder classes, whose adorable self-portraits and animal paintings you will fall in love with, to the sophisticated paintings, sketches and sculptures created by the budding artists of the upper school classes taught by Mr Adams, a talented artist himself.

The celebratory inauguration cocktail will begin from 7pm – we look forward to seeing you there!

Also taking place in Altos de Chavón this Thursday as part of the Festival de Primavera will be a theatrical performance “Asalto Pirata” by the Dominican Street Theater at 4:30pm,  an Interactive Workshop on Dominican Folkloric Dances at 5pm, as well as a String and Poetry Concert at 8:30pm!

Inauguration of the Abraham Lincoln School Art Exhibit

The Abraham Lincoln School Art Exhibit will be open at The Gallery in Altos de Chavón from Thursday May 24rd to June 3rd. The Gallery is open daily from 9am to 6pm, closed Wednesdays.

Hundreds of people, including friends, teachers and families of the students witnessed this important moment in the lives of these students. With the knowledge and skills they have acquired in Altos de Chavón, they now head out into the world to make a name for themselves and to continue to elevate the already excellent reputation of the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design, which has been graduating students from its two-year associate-degree program, affiliated with New York City’s prestigious Parsons “The New School For Design” since 1983.

The rector of the school, Stephen Kaplan, said to casadecampoliving.com that he feels very privileged to work with both Dominicans and foreigners at the school, and that over the years he has seen many talented youths, which it has been an honour to work with.

Ceremony  

Around 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, the students made their grand entrance to the hall- where their family and friends were waiting for them- with the song “Freedom” sung by Nana Mouskouri, as background.

Each student wore a different color depending on their course specialism; red for fashion design, yellow for graphic design and dark blue for the fine arts students.

Following the the National Anthem and blessing by Father Victor Garcia of the San Antonio de Padua Parish and St. Stanislaus Cracobia, the master of ceremony, Carmen Lorente,-who is also the director of special projects in the New York office of the school-introduced the special guests.

These were Anne Gaines, the current director of the School of Arts, Media and Technology (AMT) at Parsons, New York; Adolfo Despradel, graduate of the Chavón School and current director of the Department of Design and Planning of Costasur, Melanie Reim, American illustrator and occasional instructor at the Chavón School of Design; Miguel Valenzuela, director of the National School of Visual Arts, and Ben Vencial Gil,  Dominican architect and founder of the Dominican Academy of Architecture and Urbanism (ACADA).

Among the most salient aspects of the event was the speech by Mrs. Melanie Reim- someone considered by Mr. Kaplan as  “a whirlwind of a teacher in Chavon”. Reim In her speech -full of dynamic and playful illustrations- urged graduates to  not be mediocre with their works. Also impactful was the presentation of valedictorian student graphic design graduate Jose Marte David Olivares, Summa Cum Laude, and the special thanks of a family who have all studied at the Altos de Chavon School of Design in different times of their lives.

At the end of the event at Flamboyan Conference Center, the students along with their guest went to The Gallery, in Altos de Chavon, where were their works were on exhibition and they enjoyed a refreshing cocktail.

These wonderful structures, which can be wood, metal or even plastic, are widely used across the Dominican Republic, especially, in the gardens and terraces of Casa de Campo. Not only are the beautiful, a place for flowers to flourish, but they also provide shade from the warm Caribbean sun.

“In our country, the Dominican Republic, pergolas are used often -because apart  giving us shade- they protection and shelter”, says interior designer Nina Katherine to casadecampoliving.com.

Nina says that this arquitectural element is commonly used in open spaces where you want to create shade or create a transition between an indoor and and outdoor area.

Pergolas may have a “showed structure” – meaning they can be seen through, something which is commonly used in gardens and to provide shelter for outdoor jacuzzis, pools and terraces…

“Another idea for use pergolas is to keep it enclosed to prevent the passage of excessive light and for privacy. An option that many designers and landscapers recommend is the use of climber plants to give a sense of intimacy and increase the surface of the shade”, she adds.

Trellises are commonly used in the design of pergolas -these are a flat structures created by an open lattice, which support climbing plants.

In Casa de Campo there are a variety of pergolas distributed throughout the complex. There are some beautiful ones in Altos de Chavon – just behind Rusticos y Mas as well as in the garden area, in many Casa de Campo villas, at the Casa de Campo Hotel and at the entrance of every apartment building in Los Altos. They are decorated with beautiful climbing plants and flowers.

There can be no doubt that the simple pergola brightens and beautifies the Casa de Campo resort wherever we look!

Of the 150 people, who requested the surgery, 60 were selected to benefit from a variety of corrective surgeries like reconstruction and tendon transposition, arthroplasty, osteotomy, and removal of osteosynthesis material.

The surgeries -part of an ongoing series of “operativo medicos” ran annually by the Central Romana Corporation- were performed by a team of doctors who came to the country from the United States led by Dr. Michael Murphy, of Union Memorial Hospital, in Baltimore, MD, while in this case, Dr. Edward Shaw Wilgins guided the surgeries in the country.

According to the hospital, Dr. Edward started this “operativo medico” focused on hands surgeries more than 15 years ago, to benefit patients living in the bateys and other nearby communities of the greater La Romana area. 

“I first came to the country when I was invited by the Patronato Benéfico Oriental in La Romana to meet several cases of hand reconstructive surgeries in children from the Hogar del Niño. It was an experience of great satisfaction for me,” said Dr. Wilgins.

In his opinion, most of surgeries performed produce a significant improvements in the lives of patients seen.“I remember a case of syndactyly in a six-month-old, whose fingers were united. After the surgery his fingers were free and he could start to holdthings”, said Dr. Wilgins.

Dr. Edward Shaw Wilgins expressed his enthusiasm to continue his work with the Dominican doctors of Central Romana Hospital, whom he described as excellent professionals and great colleagues, including Dr. José López director of the hospital, Dr. Isabel Leon, chief of surgical, and Dr. Victor Carvajal, anaesthesiologist.

During his time on the “operativo medico”, he talked about the impressive new modern infrastructure of the new “Centro Médico” Central Romana Hospital which opened in 2011. “The conditions of the new hospital are great, comparable with any hospital of United States”, he said.

If at first light you can glimpse the silent outbreak of flowers, a contemplation of beauty, then there can be no doubt – spring has arrived, a metaphor of light that nature creates to show the miracle of life in Altos de Chavón.

Altos de Chavón will play host to the Spring Festival, an opportunity to show the world, a true representation of the Dominican Republic’s art and popular culture. So on May 23, 24, 25 and 26, a series of events will invite visitors to experience the best of the Dominican Republic’s art, dance and music.

The Ministry of Culture extends a friendly hand to the Central Romana Corporation through Casa de Campo and Costasur Dominicana, to ensure the success of the Festival de Primavera.

Dominican Minister of Culture José Antonio Rodríguez also recently announced the “Aldea Cultural Santa Rosa de Lima” (cultural village), a project which is taking the old “La Fortaleza” jail overlooking the Salao river and the Casa de Campo – La Romana tourist port and converting it into a center for fine arts, a naval museum and an amphitheatre as well as an exhibit on the tabacco industry – one of the attractions directed towards tourists.

On Thursday afternoon the group of participants, amongst them Ana Garcia, President of the La Romana – Bayahibe Tourism Cluster, gathered at the Dominicus Palace Hotel for the talk with Kate Wallace, an American who came to the country 19 years ago as a Peace Corps volunteer, and who has been amazed at the great diversity of birds that exist in Dominican Republic.

During the talk, Mrs. Wallace showed the audience different pictures of endemic (native) and migrating birds that can be seen easily in the Parque Nacional del Este (just a few minutes drive from Casa de Campo resort) and talked about their importance and their characteristics.

The delight of the audience to see the photos of the birds was immediate. Many of them were laughing and enthusiastic – because they had already seen most of them, but it was interesting to find out their names and discover a little more about each one.

Wallace, who currently lives in the Bahoruco mountains, in the South of the Dominican Republic, highlighted the importance of birds in the Dominican Republic by citing the example that in the United States a total of approximately 612 different types of birds can be found, of which only one is endemic, while in the Dominican Republic there is approximately 300 different types of which 32 are endemic!

Kate Wallace, considers herself as an amateur in birds, but despite that she has written a lot about the birds found on the island of Hispaniola and specifically in the Dominican Republic. She also created a brochure a few years ago with the different types of birds that can be observed in Casa de Campo resort.

From 7:30am on Friday the 10th of May, Wallace led a “bird-walk” through the Guaraguao Protection Center in Bayahibe, part of the Parque Nacional del Este.

Unfortunately it rained from early morning, so that the number of birds we were able to observe was less than normal (they stay in their nests when it rains). However, we were able to see a Pájaro Bobo, Ruiseñor, Cuervo, Petrigre, Julián Chivi, Carpintero and Cigua Palmera….but the biggest cheer was for the Barrancolí, a tiny green bird with red and yellow accents, which, explained Wallace is one of the most beautiful endemic birds found in the Dominican Republic.

On the walk, Wallace explained about the sounds birds make. As each bird has it’s own individual song, an enthusiast can know what birds are in the area just by listening. Also, many birds have been named after the sound it makes, for example, the Julian Chivi emits a sound like “jualianchivi, julianchivi”.

This trail is a hidden beauty within the Parque Nacional del Este. The main entrance is next to the Cadaques hotel, in Dominicus. During the tour visitors will have the experience of walking in the tropical forest observing forest type, the different species of plants, orchids, bromeliads, and animals like birds, reptile, insects and other arthropods.  The final destination on the tour is Cueva del Puente (Cave of the Bridge), which has pictographs created by the Tainos (the Pre-Columbian Indigenous peoples of the Dominican Republic). Total walking time is approximately 4 hours (round-trip) – so we suggest you go with comfortable shoes and don’t forget your camera!

Interactive, thrilling and exciting! On Thursday afternoon the 23rd of May, the theatrical performance of “Pirate Assault” by the Dominican Street Theater group promises to be something fun for all ages!

Yet another component of the fun-filled schedule of the Festival de Primavera being celebrated in Altos de Chavón from the 23rd to the 26th of May, “Pirate Assault” directed by Prof. Carlota Carretero playfully tells the story of famous pirate Francis Drake.

Also taking place in Altos de Chavón on Thursday the 23rd of May as part of the Festival de Primavera is the Dominican Folk Dance Workshop (5pm at the Altos de Chavón Regional Museum of Archeology), the cocktail opening of the Abraham Lincoln School Art exhibit (7pm at The Gallery) as well as a String and Poetry Concert with the Quinteto Mirabal and poetry read by Sandra Mustelier (8:30pm at the “Fish Fountain”).

All these events make the opening night of the Festival de Primavera an excellent evening to be in Altos de Chavón – and after all that excitement why not stay in Chavón for a bite to eat? You could try Altos de Chavón newest restaurant, The Club Riverside Steakhouse or enjoy some casual dining at Onno’s Bar!
