And you needn’t check the sports  pages to confirm the obvious; rather, just go for a drive. If you do so,  you’ll likely come across numerous expatriates flying the flags of  their homelands.&lt;br /&gt;
Hey, I’m all for freedom of expression. But is there not some  perverse irony zipping by on the highways these days? When I see the  flag of England fluttering from a German-made Volkswagen or the Stars  &amp;amp; Stripes hoisted atop a made-in-Japan Nissan, I can only shake my  head at the wonder of it all.&lt;br /&gt;
But my biggest source of car-flag ire is generated by those members  of the Portuguese community who choose to fly the flag of Portugal AND  Brazil.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Sorry, Marcelo, it doesn’t work that way.&lt;br /&gt;
True, there’s an historical relationship between Portugal and Brazil.  But that relationship was one of master and servant.&lt;br /&gt;
Golly, talk about hedging your bets! Talk about jumping on the  bandwagon! (Indeed, one wonders if the Portuguese would be such vocal  Brazil boosters if this nation wasn’t a perennial soccer super-power?  But I digress…)&lt;br /&gt;
However, this year, I’m not getting mad. I’m getting even.&lt;br /&gt;
If the Portuguese can justify having two teams to cheer on, guess  what? I can make the case that I have links (albeit tenuous links) to  all thirty-two competing nations.&lt;br /&gt;
Which is why my once-cool truck now resembles a Gypsy circus wagon  given the Ford is now displaying the flags of nearly three dozen  nations. (Oh, by the way, will all you passers-by kindly stop asking if  I’m a flag merchant? These banners are not for sale, for my heart is  committed to these wonderful 32 nations I like to call…“home.”) &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;As for the connections, let’s see now: wife hails from Johannesburg  and she recently got a Brazilian at the spa, so check off Brazil and  South Africa. &lt;br /&gt;
I like Turkish Delight, so Turkey’s good to go.&lt;br /&gt;
I own a cool pocketknife, so I feel a bond with the Swiss.&lt;br /&gt;
I have an inherent love of marsupials, so Australia is a no-brainer.&lt;br /&gt;
I love lamb souvlaki, so check off both Greece and New Zealand.&lt;br /&gt;
I get emails every day from some dude in Africa telling me I’m  entitled to a percentage of a $43 million fortune, so Nigeria is always  on my mind.&lt;br /&gt;
I’ve been known to frequent Taco Bell franchises, so Mexico is  practically a second home.&lt;br /&gt;
The point is, I could go on and on and on when it comes to explaining  my heart-felt connections to the 32 countries vying for soccer  supremacy… but if I were to do so, then this blog entry might end up  being even more boring than, well, soccer itself.&lt;br /&gt;
Bottom line: Screw you, Portugal.&lt;br /&gt;

Contemporary standards of mental health are just pathologically  low. Our        super-well descendants, by contrast, will enjoy a glorious  spectrum of new        options for mental super-health. They may opt to combine emotional  stability, resilience and &quot;serotonergic&quot;        serenity, for instance, with the goal-oriented energy, optimism  and initiative        of a raw &quot;dopaminergic&quot; high. We convince ourselves that all manner of things would potentially  make us        happy. All these peripheral routes to personal fulfilment are not  merely vastly circuitous and        inefficient. In the main, they just don&#39;t, and can&#39;t, durably  work. At best,        they can serve as  palliatives of the human predicament. If the        mind/brain&#39;s emotional thermostat, as it were, is not genetically  and/or pharmacologically        reset, then even the greatest triumphs and successes turn to  ashes. Lottery        winners, cup-final hat-trick scorers and blissful newly-weds are  left time        and again to discover this fate anew. Even those of us who tend to  lead        a relatively happy day-to-day existence will, in the course of a  lifetime,        undergo spells of wretched unhappiness and disappointment. If we  opt to have children, our corrupt code ensures they will periodically  suffer a similar fate.     &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The neurochemical basis of  feeling and        emotion is rapidly being unravelled. The human genome is going to  get comprehensively decoded        and rewritten. In ages to come, it will become purely an issue of  (post-)human        decision whether unpleasant modes of consciousness are generated  in any        form or texture whatsoever. Aversive experience is a sinister  anachronism in the age of post-genomic medicine.        We will soon have to decide if we should &lt;i&gt;inflict&lt;/i&gt; suffering  on ourselves        or on others. A terrible but once unavoidable fact of organic life  then        becomes instead a matter for active moral choice when one decides  upon the genetic make-up of one&#39;s future kids. Instead,  an extraordinarily      fertile range of purposeful and productive activities will most  likely be      pursued. Better still, our descendants, and in principle perhaps  even our      elderly selves, will have the chance to enjoy modes of experience we  primitives      cruelly lack.
