Boucher works with Indigenous communities in the field of criminal justice. His research focuses on the experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canadian criminal courts. He explores how Indigenous legal traditions can contribute to the transformation of criminal justice.

Alexandra Mallett

Mallett’s experience spans academia and the public sectors, working on the design, implementation and evaluation of energy, climate change and environmental policy.  She has worked for the Canadian government (Natural Resources Canada and Environment Canada), an intergovernmental organization (the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C.), and academic institutions.  Her research areas include an examination of the innovation, co-operation and adoption processes (including policies, actors and institutions) involved in sustainable energy technologies, especially in emerging economies, and Canada and the United States.   A further line of research focuses on contemporary shifts involved in the governance of natural resources, with a particular focus on mining.

Duncan McCue
Professor, School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University

McCue is Anishinaabe, a member of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation in southern Ontario.

McCue, an award-winning CBC broadcaster and leading advocate for fostering the connection between journalism and Indigenous communities. His work now focuses on Indigenous Journalism and (Story)telling.

In addition, McCue is working with Carleton colleagues to launch a new journalism skills certificate on the ground in Indigenous communities.

McCue was the host of Helluva Story on CBC Radio and was also the driving force behind Kuper Island, a remarkable eight-part podcast series on residential schools.

McCue was with CBC News for 25 years. In addition to hosting CBC Radio One’s Cross Country Checkup, he was a longstanding correspondent for CBC-TV’s flagship news show, The National.

Over the years, he developed a unique online resource, Reporting in Indigenous Communities, which inspired his latest work, a new textbook called Decolonizing Journalism: A Guide to Reporting in Indigenous Communities. McCue is also the author of The Shoe Boy: A Trapline Memoir, which recounts a season he spent in a hunting camp with a Cree family in northern Quebec as a teenager.

Stephan Schott
Professor, School of Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University

Schott’s research focuses on alternative energy and sustainable development in the Arctic, the economic impacts of mining on local communities and local business development, food security and the integration of traditional knowledge and science, behavioural experiments in common pool resource environments, energy strategies and carbon emission reduction programmes.

He believes that we need to act on a number of urgent issues, such as climate change, fish stock declines, food insecurity, and declining community well-being. His research closely involves end users such as communities, individual harvesters and local governments to come up with practical bottom-up solutions to pressing public policy issues.

Dale Spencer

Spencer has done extensive research on the “Sixties Scoop,” the mass removal of Indigenous children (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) from their families and communities into the child welfare system between the late 1950s and 1980s.  He researches responses to sexual violence, specifically non-governmental and police responses to sexual violence. His areas of interest include criminal justice responses to sexual violence, sex offences and offenders, critical approaches to children and youth, conceptions of homelessness and micro and macro approaches to violence.

Omeasoo Wahpasiw

Carleton University welcomes the renewed federal support for the Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (BEKH) through March 2028, reinforcing the university’s leadership role in advancing research, collaboration and community engagement to strengthen Black entrepreneurship across Canada.

Supported by the Government of Canada through the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED), the funding renewal of up to $4.5M was announced at the 2026 Inter-Institutional Forum of the Scarborough Charter on Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion in Canadian Higher Education. The renewed investment marks the next phase of a nationally significant initiative dedicated to expanding Canada’s Black entrepreneurial ecosystem through research, data and practical solutions.

Since its launch, BEKH has played a central role in building a stronger understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing Black entrepreneurs in Canada, and realized many successes including the creation of a national data repository on Black entrepreneurship. The next phase, known as BEKH 2.0, will build on this foundation focusing on expanding its research, partnerships and community engagement.

“With this support, BEKH will deepen and expand its anchor role as the go-to source for robust and credible data, a trusted repository of relevant knowledge, and a catalyst for data-informed collaboration and innovation that will enhance Black entrepreneurship, grow Black businesses, and strengthen the Canadian economy for the benefit of all Canadians.”

BEKH 2.0 will welcome new partners and increase collaboration among its national network of research hubs and partners, including Simon Fraser University, Saint Mary’s University, Université du Québec à Montréal, Concordia University, the University of Alberta and the University of Northern British Columbia. The Dream Legacy Foundation will continue to serve as one of the initiative’s community partners.

Building on extensive community consultations and research conducted during the initiative’s first phase, BEKH 2.0 will focus on five thematic research pillars: supporting business growth and resilience; improving access to financing opportunities; strengthening investment readiness; advancing digital adoption and innovation; and identifying scalable interventions to support Black entrepreneurs across Canada.

The initiative aligns with Carleton’s commitment to inclusive impact and supports the Government of Canada’s broader strategy to strengthen Black entrepreneurship and expand economic opportunities for equity-seeking groups across the country. Through collaborative research, data management and national communities of practice, BEKH 2.0 aims to translate knowledge into practical tools and strategies that help Black businesses scale and grow sustainably.

The announcement was made in the presence of Members of Parliament representing The Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism), including Greg Fergus (Hull—Aylmer), Tatiana Auguste (Terrebonne) and Yasir Naqvi (Ottawa Centre).

About the Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub

The Black Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub is a collaborative, co-generated national data and knowledge platform that reflects the state of Black entrepreneurship in Canada and forms a key part of the Government of Canada’s Black Entrepreneurship Program.

BEKH is a national network of regional research hubs focused on co-creating community-based research and knowledge that supports Black entrepreneurs and helps Black businesses reach their full potential.

Carleton University researcher Thomas Russell has been announced as the university’s newest Canada Research Chair (CRC). His innovative research focuses on developing advanced economic models that can be utilized with limited computing power.

Thomas Russell, CRC in Frontiers of Economic Analysis (Tier II)

Economic models help policymakers understand consumer behaviour and market dynamics. Partially identified models are a type of economic models that can be used under weak modelling assumptions, often making them more credible tools for policy analysis. However, the large number of computational resources required to use these models has limited their widespread adoption.

Russell, a researcher in the Department of Economics, is exploring how to approximate partially identified models using a low amount of computing resources. His research will study the computational complexity of existing models before investigating techniques to approximate complex models with simpler surrogate models. This work will make it easier for economists to use credible economic models and will help researchers better understand the trade-off between computational complexity and model accuracy. 

Russell’s research has applications in consumer choice, social networks, and firm competition, and his work will make partially identified models more accessible to researchers and policymakers working in these areas.
