Senate votes to extend payroll tax cuts and unemployment insurance

WASHINGTON — The Senate voted this morning to ensure payroll tax cuts don’t increase and unemployment insurance benefits don’t end as the new year begins.
The flip side is that they’re paying for the two-month long extension of these programs by socking new homebuyers and people refinancing their home loans with a new fee.
For weeks, Republicans and Democrats couldn’t agree on how to pay for a measure to extend the current payroll tax. The rate for the special category of taxes, paid directly into the Social Security trust fund, is usually 6.2 percent, but has been at 4.2 percent for the last year. Lawmakers wanted to offset the cost to ensure that the tax cut extension wouldn’t drain the Social Security fund.
Democrats wanted to put a surtax on millionaires’ higher incomes; Republicans wanted to increase millionaires’ Medicare payments and freeze federal workers’ payroll.
What the party leaders finally shook hands on is a measure that may surprise some Nevadans.
The bill establishes a new mortgage insurance fee, equivalent to about $15 extra per month for every $200,000 of mortgage a homeowner qualifies for — or $180 per year per $200,000 of new mortgage — to all loans originating with government lenders. It marginally raises the cost of home-buying in Nevada, where the recession and mortgage crisis have left many neighborhoods half empty.
It’s not likely to scare away homebuyers — and many will see it as a worthwhile trade for the continuation of payroll tax cuts (worth about $1,000 per year to the average Nevada family) and unemployment benefits (worth up to $393 per week for Nevada workers.)
“The No. 1 thing that is hurting the housing market is lack of demand,” Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, said Saturday after the bill passed. “The No. 1 thing that’s creating a lack of demand is lack of middle class income in families’ pockets. You’re doing a lot more to help the housing market than hurt the housing market.”
The new mortgage fee will be applied to all loans originating with the Federal Housing Administration for 10 years, and with Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac permanently. New homeowners and those who refinance would pay the extra insurance charge to the banks, but for the next 10 years the funds would transferred directly to the U.S. Treasury Department to offset the two-month long payroll tax and unemployment insurance extension.
Democratic aides were selling the deal during the vote today as the lesser of present evils, because everyone is eyeing a phase-out of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac anyway. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which used to be government-backed and are now government-owned, were at the center of the subprime mortgage crisis.
The fees are a gesture toward making private lenders more competitive with the government lenders, which are heavily subsidized. But most private lenders remain significantly pricier than the government options, even after tacking $15 onto the monthly charges.
Additionally, if Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac aren’t dismantled in the next decade, the permanent fees would start to go directly toward the lenders, which would serve to strengthen those institutions.
Lawmakers also would not commit that additional mortgage-associated fees wouldn’t be used to pay for more extensions of payroll tax cuts and unemployment insurance, though Schumer said that they’ve “never seen (a higher increase) on the table.”
The fight about how to pay for payroll tax cuts and unemployment insurance is due for a second act almost immediately after Congress returns to Washington after the holidays.
Saturday’s bill — which has yet to pass the House — is only good for 60 days, meaning lawmakers will be back to the drawing board in February to try to cobble together a way forward for the rest of the year.
“It’s a fight we welcome,” Schumer said. “Republicans will hold back the middle class tax break at their peril.”
Republicans have been divided on the payroll tax cut. While an overwhelming majority of Republican senators voted to pass it as part of a larger package that included unemployment benefit and a direction to President Barack Obama to render a decision on the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast by the time the bill’s 60 days are up, not as many turned out in the past few weeks to vote for a payroll tax cut alternative offered by one of their own, Nevada Sen. Dean Heller.

Heller has argued that continuing the payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits is critical for Nevada, and voted for the compromise bill Saturday, even though he would have liked it to have been longer.
“Times are tough, especially for Nevadans, and Congress did the right thing today by putting partisanship aside to help those who are looking for work and struggling to pay their bills,” he said in a statement after the vote. “However, these last-minute quick fixes cause too much instability. Congress should extend these benefits for the entire year.”
Democrats too want to see the payroll tax cut and unemployment programs — seen as having the biggest “bang for the buck” in terms of economic stimulus — extended through the end of 2012.
Which only means the fight is due for a encore performance.
Heller’s proposal was to pay for a payroll tax cut extension by freezing federal salaries, trimming the federal workforce and asking higher premiums from millionaire Medicare beneficiaries.
Democrats want to focus on millionaires too, but on their salaries, not their health care.
“My preference, and the preference of most Americans is that we ask the wealthiest to pay their fair share,” Obama said Saturday as he praised the Senate for passing a bill, but expressed his regrets they couldn’t come up with a longer-reaching solution.
The bill now goes to the House of Representatives, which comes back into session Monday.

I get many emails from people who want to know if I accept guest posts on Daily Blog Tips, and if that is the case, what are the guidelines. I figured that it would be easier to write the guidelines in a post and just refer every one here.

So the answer to the first question is: Yes, I do accept guest posts. Currently I just publish one guest post per week though, usually on Wednesdays. Below you will find all the details about the process.

What kind of content do you accept?

Anything that is useful for our readers is good content for a guest post here. It can be related to blogging, Internet marketing in general, and it can also be derived from your own personal experiences. There is no minimum length for your post, but usually the guest posts have over 500 words.

Guidelines

Your post must be original and must have never been published before on the Internet
You agree to not publish the post anywhere else (i.e., in your own blog or as a guest post in other blogs)
You can include up to two links in the byline, which will be displayed at the bottom of the post
You can’t use SEOd anchor text for your links

How do I submit my guest post?

If you have a post that meets the guidelines above, you can send it to me on the email smart.loverfriend@gmail.com. Usually within 48 hours I will reply stating if we will accept the guest post or not. If I reject your post, you are obviously free to use it in your own blog or to propose it as a guest post to some other website.

ITCN Asia 2009 Concludes in Karachi

ITCN Asia, a three day Telecom and IT Exhibition, concluded in Karachi today. As per our correspondents event went smoothly, however, they observed that event attracted lesser visitors and exhibitors than last year.

We missed Telenor, Warid and Mobilink at the exhibition. Ufone came along with PTCL – Zong had its stall as well. Internet Broadband operators showed their presence with Wateen, WiTribe and WorldCall’s appearance at the expo.

Overall it was a typical B2B exhibition with very little margin of interest for general public. However, Exhibition welcomed general public coming in, in a situation where consumer oriented companies were also participating – but consumers were not largely incentivized by the exhibitors. For instance, Dell was selling over-priced laptops - something not usual in exhibitions.

Event was inaugurated by Naguibullah Malik, Federal Secretary at IT & Telecom. Dr. Khursheed Nizam, President, E commerce Gateway, Walid Irshaid, President & CEO, PTCL, Muhamad Sadiq, CEO, Wi-Tribe Pakistan, Dr. Muhammad Yaseen, Chairman, PTA, Usman Sheikh, MD & COO, KHL, Parvez Iftikhar, CEO, Universal Service Fund Pakistan, Raheel Kamal, Senior Director, Global Business Development, Qualcomm Inc. USA, Sikandar Naqi, SEVP, PTCL were present at the Inaugural Ceremony.

As per official release, exhibition attracted approximately 42,000 Trade and Corporate Visitors. Exhibition incorporated four conferences, which were

Introduces Live Online Support (But only for Postpaid initially)

Ufone has introduced this Live Online Support option for its postpaid customers initially, which will be available for prepaid consumers too in future (This is something we anticipate and wish too – however, no official words on it yet).

For getting support you need to be a Ufone postpaid verified user, otherwise you can’t chat live with the support guys. With verified user I mean, you will have to register your number on Ufone’s website with a username/password, name and CNIC in order to verify your number before getting support.

Apparently looks like that this live chat support this is in beta, that’s why not everyone can chat otherwise it could be a good tool to grab non-Ufone users to their network.

This is for sure a big step towards customers’ support – and with time, it will get perfection in it to maximize customers’ satisfaction.

How to Use Live Support

* Click “Live Support” button on Ufone’s website

* New users will Register, while registered users can Login using their
username/password. For Registration system will ask you for your Ufone
number, Name, CNIC and password.

* In logged-in Area you can update your profile, request for chat and log-off

* After requesting for chat, you will be connected to Live Support, for live Chat.

BTW this online support is free for charge!

Things Ufone can improve

* Verification of mobile numbers through CNIC is good, but not that secure
(Plenty of people around me can have my name, number and CNIC information.
They can register my account with this information and start getting critical
information about me. Ufone should send a PIN number to cell phone as an SMS
to verify account, or otherwise system generated password to my mobile Number
(that I can change in future)

* I am not sure what vendor Ufone has used to develop this application – but it would
be nice if they send me chat log into my email, as a record or for future reference.

* Chat application works good, almost on all browsers, but messages see some latency
– it needs some more debugging I guess.

Look to the skies tonight: Annual Perseid meteor shower peaks

Weather-permitting, tonight and tomorrow night should offer a great chance to see some celestial activity as the annual Perseid meteor shower hits its peak.

The Perseid shower happens when the Earth passes through debris left from the Swift-Tuttle comet which last came this way in 1992.

You can follow meteor sightings on Twitter at #perseid or #meteorwatch. NASA offers some advice for the best viewing. For aspiring amateur astronomers, cnet.com lists some useful websites to help you get started.

The handsome hunk no more single, Ali Zafar ties the knot with Ayesha Fazli

Life is good for Ali Zafar: he has a lot going for him where his music is concerned (Coke Studio was a coup for him) and now his personal life is in full bloom too!

Lots of felicitations for his wedding last night to his long time sweetheart, Ayesha Fazli, the daughter of a prominent lawyer in Lahore. Unlike other celebrity weddings whose celebrations pan over weeks, and epitomize indulge and extravagance, Ali Zafar chose to have a very simply yet elegant affair with family and the closest of friends at his hometown in Lahore. Originally scheduled for October, the family decided to push back the date to July in a decision made just two weeks ago since Ali was in October with tour dates and apparently couldn’t squeeze in enough time to get married then.

With a star like Ali one expected a media circus with an entourage of stars and bevy of beauties from the glamorous world of entertainment and fashion, and although superstars like Ali Azmat, Atif Aslam, Jal, designers like cousin Amir Adnan, and Zara Shahjahan and models Iman Ali and Iffat Omer graced the occasion, it wasn’t as mammoth an affair as it could have been.

Fawad Khan of EP was also present with his family. It’s hard to have so many stars around and not be tempted for pictures to post on Facebook to gloat and incite envy from others, and so in typical teenage fashion, young adolescent girls thronged aside both Ali Zafar and Atif Aslam, while they stood embracing each other, pushed their way through and pleaded for pictures.

What a sight that was! And nothing could beat our dear Governor Punjab who walked in, the precise minute the Nikkah ended, with a set of bodyguards that stomped right through the hall onto the stage, with guests looking on eyes rolling. Hardly the polite thing to do at someone (else’s) wedding but then our politicians were never known for their manners!

Anyhow… coming back to the pop prince, he finally got hitched. And to that we say “congratulations”!

Change Background Color of New Blogger Sidebar

A blogger commented that he could not find the sidebar color code in the template to change the background color of the sidebar. The CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) of every template is written different and if something is missing, all you need to do is to add the relevant missing part in.

For example, in the standard Blogger Scribe template, this is the section in the CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) for the sidebar:

#sidebar {
width:150px;
float:left;
padding:8px 0;
margin:0;
word-wrap: break-word; /* fix for long text breaking sidebar float in IE */
overflow: hidden; /* fix for long non-text content breaking IE sidebar float */
}

There is nothing mentioned about background. So what I did was to add a single line

background: #FFFFFF;

(#FFFFFF is the hexadecimal color code for white) to that section, so that it became:

#sidebar {
width:150px;
float:left;
padding:8px 0;
margin:0;
word-wrap: break-word; /* fix for long text breaking sidebar float in IE */
overflow: hidden; /* fix for long non-text content breaking IE sidebar float */
background: #FFFFFF;
}

BTW, instead of using hexadecimal color codes like #FFFFFF, you can also use most names of colors like red, blue, white, etc. If you want to blend the color to the colors of the site, try typing the search term "colorpic" or "iconico colorpic" into the search box above, tick ( ) Web radio button and search, and I am sure you would see the link as the first result in the SERP (search engine result page) to download a very useful tool I use to get the color code of colors on any website. (I don't want to put too many outbound links as I understand outbound links can lower your PageRank).

I also find
Color Blender very useful if I want some "in-between" color or colors. If anyone is interested on how to use that site properly, just make a comment and I will do a new post on how to use it.

Twitter Spam a Real Problem

We have multiple Twitter accounts – one for each of our websites – and we’ve been looking at different tools and websites that will help us with these accounts.

One of these websites was a site called youradder.com who claimed they could get us more followers. And a bit recklessly we registered with them without reading the ‘rules’….bad decision!

Within a few days one of our Twitter accounts was inundated with spam messages. You’ve probably seen the type we mean – “Finally found the BEST way to get tons of followers for FREE!” or “I just become a member of this AWESOME site that gets you TONS of followers”.

The unfortunate thing for us is these messages were posted almost continuously on that Twitter account causing us to look like spammers.

The ‘rules’ that we failed to read before signing up are listed as follows:

Rules:

1. You agree to submit your twitter accout credentials.
2. You agree to allow us to store your account information in our database.
3. You agree your account will be used to automatically tweet an update on your account for promotional purposes every 6 hours with the exception of VIP members.
4. You agree upon loging in you allow us tweet an update on your twitter for promotion.
5. You agree when buying vip there are no refunds or returns what so ever.
6. You agree to allow us up to 6 hours to put your twitter user name on the vip section.
7. You agree if you spam our site you will be banned from our service forever with out hesitation.

As you can see Rule #3 is the nasty one. However, even if we had read these terms and accepted the ‘one post every 6 hours’ we still would have been pissed off as the number of posts actually averaged about 4 every hour. We were looking like big time spammers.

The only way to get rid of it was for us to change our password on that Twitter account. This seems to have fixed the problem although we will be keeping an eye on it over the next few days.

There appears to be a chain of these sites all doing the same thing and it is really clogging up Twitter. Here are the spam messages I have found so far on unsuspecting Twitter accounts.

In the past couple of weeks we have been working on our Twitter accounts a little more seriously so decided to change the backgrounds on a few of them. Well it wasn’t as easy as we thought.

Amazon is a very big name in shopping world. Their affiliate program which is known as Amazon Associates program, is a big help when you are going towards affiliate marketing road. But as big as their name is, they pay only 4% referral commission by selling products of other people (companies) though amazon.com.

The benefits of amazon associate network are that they are popular brand, and people have no problem to purchase or use their credit cards on amazon website. But the bad thing is that if somebody knows that you are promoting a product from amazon, most of them will rather wish to buy it from amazon.

Usually i ended up with amazon stores and got some success by simply writing reviews on different products and giving a direct link to amazon website. It works best for me.

Another big problem with amazon associate network is their cookie time period which is really very short like their referral. The cookie time is only 1 day. It means if a person clicks on your affiliate link and if they buy that item after 24 hours, you won’t get any commission. They must have to buy it within a day otherwise your click is just a waste.

Change background color of blockquote in blogger

In certain templates you may find that when you want to blockquote some text the quoting background color will not show you any difference or will not corespond to your template backround color. So here in this post will see how we can change the background color of our blockquote.

1. Login to your Dashboard

2. Click on Layout

3. Click on EDIT Html Tab

4. And search for this line of code or similar code as this

.post blockquote {
background: #E8E8E8;

Now change the color you desire of your post blockquote in hexadecimal format to the color marked in red. You can refer to hexadecimal colors here

5. Now save your template and view your post blockquote backgroud color changed.

Evolution of Blogger 1999 - 2009

Blogger has always been one of the greatest (if not the best) Free Blogging platforms available on net with so many features like unlimited bandwidth, lot of templates, multi image uploading,etc.
Its always nice and interesting to know how Blogger looks like in the past. So, in this post, we attempt to bring you back in time to look at how blogger look like in the past and then scan through it's history with images.

Blogger was created by Pyra Labs and was launched on August 23, 1999. It was one of the earliest blog publishing tools and it is credited for helping popularize the format.
Here is it's design then..

Blogger.com in 1999

Blogger.com in 2000

Later, Blogger was acquired by Google Inc in the year 2003 and changed their design in 2004 and also added some cool features like Image uploading (via Picasa) , comments, drag and drop widgets, individual archieve pages for posts,etc.

Blogger.com from 2004 - Now

And also Blogger supports Google Adsense which generates revenue for the webmasters.
