This question is one that plagues many people when they are faced with a change in Internet Service Providers. But it’s really not a big deal when you break it down into small parts. When I saw that Judy asked this on LinkedIn I just HAD to answer…

So here is my answer to Judy:

Hi Judy,

That depends on who hosts your email and what their policies are. I’m assuming that you’re referring to a home email address. Call your current email provider (that would probably be the company you pay for your internet service) and ask them if they will forward your email. If they will, you’ll probably have to pay for this service, so sign up for a couple of months. They may also provide an “out of office” type of response for you stating that your email address has changed and the new address is you@newISP.com, but you’ll have to ask them. Some ‘old school’ ISPs (CompuServe comes to mind) simply Will Not forward your email, so in that case you’re a bit stuck. Just overlap the new service with the old and reply to everyone who emails you at the old address with “Hi, my email has changed….” Then forward the email to your new address and really answer from there. That way, when they respond to you, they will be replying to the New address rather than the old.

Either way, you should send out a “change of address” email to everyone you care about and want to have your new address. Make sure you send it from the new account so people can just reply!

Hope that helps,

Sue Nall
