When people talk about sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR), the term “ESG” often comes up. This isn’t surprising as they are interconnected frameworks for responsible business.

ESG stands for Environment, Social, and Governance. Unlike sustainability and CSR, which are more philosophies or end-goals, ESG involves something more tangible: data and metrics, especially when used in the context of investing. In particular, ESG encompasses the data and metrics companies and investors need to make informed decisions.

In particular, investors and organizations use ESG to evaluate how a company or organization manages risks and opportunities related to sustainability and ethical practices—intangible factors that can significantly impact a company’s long-term viability and reputation. In other words, the quantitative, measurable, investor-driven framework is used to audit and report on sustainability efforts.

Popularized in the 21st century, it is a set of standards used to measure an organization’s environmental and social impact. In other words, ESG is how a company operates in regard to the planet and its people.

The Three Pillars of ESG

The three pillars of ESG are (1) Environment, (2) Social, and (3) Governance. These are the three foundations of the framework which measure an organization’s impact beyond its financial statements. That is, they provide a system for responsible, long-term practices.

This standardized criteria is what investors use to measure a company’s sustainability and ethical significance and influence. Serving as a comprehensive toolkit, these three pillars break down corporate behavior so that stakeholders can more accurately assess how a business navigates the complexities of the modern world. In particular, these benchmarks focus on a company’s (E) environmental impact on the planet, (S) relationships with people, and (G) governance of corporate management.

Environment

The Environment (E) pillar focuses on the organization’ stewardship of the environment or of the natural world. It asks the question: “What or how is its relationship with the planet?” It zooms in on a company’s ecological impact and covers issues such as:

Resource usage or depletion: Water usage, energy usage, deforestation, waste management, conservation of natural resources

Pollution: Air and water quality impacts

Climate change: Carbon footprint, greenhouse gas emissions

Investors and other stakeholders use this criteria to evaluate a company’s environmental risks and how it is managing those risks. For instance, they might ask if the organization owns contaminated land, how it disposes of hazardous waste, how it manages toxic emissions, and if it complies with environmental regulations.

Social

The Social (S) pillar focuses on how a company manages its relationships with employees, customers, suppliers, and the community or communities where it operates. In particular, this criteria looks at its impact on people, communities, and culture.

It covers the following:

Labor standards and practices: Fair wages, workplace safety, diversity & inclusion (D&I), human rights, employee health and well-being

Data privacy: How customer data is protected

Community impact: Philanthropy (does it allocate a percentage of its profits to the local community) and local engagement

In other words, this aspect of ESG asks the question “Are stakeholders’ interests taken into account?”

Governance

The Governance (G) pillar focuses on the internal system of rules, (best) practices, and a series of processes, controls, and procedures that a company adopts to run or govern itself. Basically, it zooms in on how the company is directed, managed, or controlled.

It covers things like:

Ethics: Transparency, ethical conduct, anti-corruption policies, shareholder rights, legal compliance

Executive pay: The ratio of CEO or executive pay to average worker salary

Board diversity: The composition and independence of the board of directors, along with succession planning and board management practices

Summary: Core Focus of Each Pillar

Pillar

Key Focus

Key Areas Covered

Environmental

Planet impact

Waste, pollution, energy efficiency, climate change

Social

People and relationships

Human rights, labor standards, community impact, diversity and inclusion (D&I)

Governance

Corporate integrity

Transparency, ethics, compliance, board structure

Why Is ESG Important?

If you’re a company, attracting investors is crucial. While you often have to hand over equity for funding, the benefits investors bring with them can most likely help you recoup that equity loss. Investors not only provide the necessary capital to accelerate your growth and sustainability, they also supply strategic guidance, industry connections, and market credibility.

But beyond attracting investors, ESG is important for several other reasons, all of which will be discussed below.

The Modern Investor is Socially Conscious

Today’s investors are not only concerned about financial returns. They’re also considering positive social and/or environmental outcomes. According to Morgan Stanley Institute for Sustainable Investing’s 2025 “Sustainable Signals: Individual Investors” report, nearly 90% of investors globally are like this.

They believe in sustainable investing, which means they are looking to support companies and organizations which show both potential for competitive returns and positive outcomes. In the U.S., 88% of investors are interested in sustainable investing, and this demand hasn’t changed since late 2023.

Furthermore, the report found that over 80% of respondents believe in the possibility of achieving their financial aims while also focusing on positive environmental or social outcomes. In addition, of those investors who plan on increasing their sustainable investments next year, 59% cite confidence in performance as their no. 1 reason for doing so. Among the different generations of investors, Gen Z and Millennial investors show the highest levels of interest in sustainable investing.

Modern Investors Profile

Investors are interested in investing in companies or funds that aim to achieve market-rate financial returns while also considering positive social and/or environmental outcomes.

Investors are interested in sustainable investing. In the U.S., this demand has remained unchanged since late 2023.

Investors believe it is possible to achieve financial gains while focusing on positive environmental or social outcomes.

Investors who plan to increase sustainable investments next year are confident in the performance of ESG-forward companies.

Gen Z and Millennial investors show the highest levels of interest in sustainable investing.

Source: Morgan Stanley Institute for Sustainable Investing’s 2025 “Sustainable Signals: Individual Investors” report

In other words, investors are increasingly looking at ESG scores when deciding where to put their money.

Risk Management

Another reason why ESG has become important for companies today is risk management. By identifying “hidden risks,” organizations are more likely to prevent or avoid strikes, lawsuits, or government fines.

Brand Reputation & Trust

ESG demonstrates ethical responsibility, so corporations gain trust and build their reputation from the inside out, i.e., from employees and suppliers to customers and other stakeholders. Perhaps most importantly, modern consumers, especially younger generations, prefer to support brands that align with their values.

Regulatory Compliance

Government regulation also plays a big part on why organizations should start thinking about ESG. Aside from improving operational efficiency, which leads to cost savings and an improved bottom line, ESG also ensures that companies stay compliant with new laws on carbon emissions and diversity.

When you hear the word “lending,” the image that typically comes to mind is that of a term loan. You borrow from a bank, they check your credit history and cash flow, and if approved, give you a lump sum that you have to repay in regular installments over a specific period.

Asset-based lending (ABL) is a type of loan; in particular, it’s a revolving line of credit. However, unlike a term loan, asset-based lenders secure your loan through business assets, such as accounts receivables, inventory, and equipment. Rather than rely on your credit history, asset-based lenders look at the value of your business assets and treat them as a collateral for your loan. This setup is ideal for businesses with strong assets but limited cash flow.

How Asset-Based Lending Works

Asset-based lending (ABL), similar to many commercial loans, is secured by collateral. However, unlike them, ABL is typically secured against multiple asset types—not just one. It also focuses on the liquidation value of the assets instead of credit scores or profitability.

Step 1: Asset Evaluation or Collateral Assessment

The first step an asset-based lender will do is conduct an appraisal of the business assets to determine their value and liquidity. In particular, the lender wants to know the liquidation value of the assets, or what they would fetch in a forced sale scenario.

Collateral assessment is a vital step, as the type and value of the assets will determine the terms of the loan. In general, lenders prefer highly liquid assets as collateral or those assets that can be converted to cash easily or quickly should the business default on payments.

No. 1 on the list is current accounts receivables, i.e., those that are less than 90 days from invoice date or no more than 60 days past due. After that comes the rest of the business assets: inventory, machinery and equipment, real estate, and intellectual property.

Part of this process is a field examination. The lender does this to determine the level and quality of the business’ financial and physical assets. The results of this field examination along with the inventory appraisal will determine which assets are eligible to become part of the collateral and the advance rates against them.

Step 2: Borrowing Base Determination

Once the collateral has been assessed, the lender can now calculate the borrowing base. This is the maximum amount of money it will loan the business and is typically determined by the value of pledged collateral.

The borrowing base is usually a percentage of the value of the eligible assets, usually 80-90% of high-quality accounts receivables and 40-70% of raw inventory. The maximum loan amount is less than the book value of the assets because credit secured through physical assets is often perceived as riskier.

Since these assets fluctuate from time to time, the lender also adjusts the borrowing base to reflect these changes, typically each month. For instance, if in one month the business has more receivables or inventory, then it has more available credit. On the other hand, a slow season means less of these assets, so the borrowing base also goes down.

Step 3: The Funding Phase

You have passed the major hurdles of securing funds through asset-based lending. Now, it’s time to sign the agreement, which may or may not include the following covenants:

Negative Pledge Clause

Some lenders might include a negative pledge clause or covenant as part of the loan. It limits the business from reusing the same asset for another loan.

Cash Dominion

Cash dominion is a secured lending mechanism where a lender takes control of a business’ cash receipts to pay down outstanding revolving debt. In other words, a business’ incoming cash goes into a lender-controlled account and is first applied to the outstanding loan balance before anything else.

But, a good thing about ABL is that the business will only pay for the amount it actually uses, and cash dominion doesn’t take effect as soon as the business signs the agreement. It is often triggered by events like when a business fails to meet a liquidity threshold or when it defaults.

Step 4: Ongoing Monitoring & Reporting

Asset-based lenders want to ensure that the loan remains secured. So, they will often require the business to provide regular reports on their borrowing use and asset levels, usually on a weekly or monthly basis, to maintain their line of credit.

These reports include:

Sales reports: As the business issues new invoices, their borrowing base grows.

Collection reports: As customers pay the business, the funds are often directed to a “lockbox” controlled by the lender to pay down the balance.

Inventory audits: Lenders may perform periodic physical counts to verify that the collateral still exists and is in good condition. For instance, lenders also typically conduct field examinations once or twice per year.

Key Advantages & Disadvantages of Asset-Based Lending

Asset-based lending (ABL) can be a good option, but it’s not the right option for every business in every circumstance. ABL comes with its own set of pros and cons, which each business has to weigh carefully before jumping in.

Pros of ABL

Asset-based lending is easier to obtain than loans and business lines of credit. The only major requirement is to have assets that can be used as a collateral to secure the loan or line of credit.

ABL puts valuable assets to good use. If the business has already invested in equipment or inventory, then it can leverage those assets to acquire additional working capital.

ABL is more flexible than other types of financing. Asset-based lenders often impose few restrictions on business, so that as long as the funds are used for business purposes, they’re good.

ABL costs lower than similar solutions. In comparison with invoice factoring, asset-based lending is less costly. ABL bases its interest rate on the amount borrowed, which is a percentage of the invoice or asset value. Meanwhile, invoice factoring takes a percentage fee of the invoice value, which means you’re paying more for less.

Cons of ABL

Not all assets qualify as collateral. Assets must meet a certain criteria in order to be eligible for collateral. Typically, it has to be of high value, with low depreciation rate or high appreciation rate, and can be converted to cash easily.

ABL costs more than a traditional loan. Because ABL needs intensive monitoring, it can incur higher management and administrative fees. Setting up an ABL facility also incurs costs, and interest rates are generally higher than banks.

Businesses risk losing valuable assets. If a business fails to repay the loan, the asset or assets that were pledged as collateral for the loan or line of credit could be sold by the lender to recover the funds they lent the business.

Summary of Asset-Based Lending’s Pros & Cons

Some challenges faced by dispensaries include the obvious ones: legality and regulatory issues being the most relevant and legitimate concerns.

Navigating insurance claims in the cannabis industry is also a complex challenge; however, some professionals simplify the process, maximize recovery, and help the cannabis business move forward. From cultivators and extractors to testing labs and dispensaries, these specialized folks represent businesses across the supply chain.

Here are some of the top claims challenges cannabis companies face:

Fire

Mold

Theft

Equipment failure

Contamination

Regulatory shutdowns

According to the experts at Cannabis Business Times, the biggest challenges in operating and maintaining a cannabis company, “Talk to anyone in the cannabis industry, and most—if not all—will tell you it’s rife with challenges. With barriers ranging from financial and regulatory to operational and beyond, operators in this new and federally illegal industry have no shortage of difficulties to overcome.

Starting Up

Regulatory

Staffing

Cultivation,”.

I can remember when cannabis first became legal medicinally in states out West like California and Washington. Then Michigan followed suit shortly after, and my ex-husband and I were so excited as we were cannabis connoisseurs – used to be regular aficionados but then had children, so it was more of an occasional basis at that point.

In fact, he wanted us to get into the business as growers, but I was apprehensive since our sons were still little and the questionable legality of it all was very new. Once it became legal for both medicinal and recreational use in more than thirty-five states, I actually pondered the idea of getting into the business.

But by that time, my sons were in their teenage/preteen years, and I did not want to show any preference to using marijuana, either for it or against it, nor did I want to draw any more attention to the idea of experimentation that is common among teens.

Furthermore, I had embarked upon my recovery journey as a sober person, so I no longer partook in anything mind or mood-altering. Although I do not judge or condemn the consumption of cannabis, as it has a lot of healing purposes and uses. I personally know scores of people who have benefited from cannabis.

Which state has the most dispensaries

In my home state of Pure Michigan, cannabis is big business. It seems as though there are dispensaries everywhere! Especially close to where I work near Ferndale in Southeast Michigan – there are so many dispensaries that I think they might outnumber the bars, which would be a good thing. While the dispensaries do not actually outnumber the bars, there are more than twenty-two within a five-square-mile radius!

In an article that cites the 2026 Cannabis Industry Statistics, FlowHub reports that, “For the cannabis industry, the only constant is change. Cannabis regulations, laws, sentiment, technology, and business practices evolve each year—meaning there’s a long list of new data and insights to unpack.

Most Americans now live in a state that has legalized cannabis. Pew Research broke down the details to find:

54% of Americans live in a state where the recreational use of marijuana is legal.

74% of Americans live in a state where cannabis is legal for either recreational or medical use.

79% of Americans live in a county with at least one cannabis dispensary.

There are nearly 15,000 cannabis dispensaries in the United States.

California has far more dispensaries than any state: 3,659 at the time of this analysis, more than double the amount in the second-highest ranking state. A quarter of all marijuana dispensaries in the U.S. are in California, and nearly all Californians (99.5%) have a dispensary in their county. Los Angeles County alone has more dispensaries (1,481) than any state other than California itself.

Oklahoma has the most marijuana dispensaries per capita of any state: 36 dispensaries for every 100,000 residents,”.

They also note that other states with the next-largest number of dispensaries are Michigan (942), Colorado (1,054), and Florida (1,233).

What city has the most dispensaries in Michigan

The first dispensary I ever stepped foot in was in Ann Arbor, and they, too, have a plethora of cannabis businesses, like near where I work. When I was a teenager and, in my twenties, I participated in the annual Hash Bash that Ann Arbor has been hosting since April 1, 1972, making the 2026 event the 55th annual gathering.

Held on the University of Michigan Diag, it was established to protest marijuana laws following the release of activist John Sinclair. The rally has continued nearly every year, focusing on cannabis policy reform.

It’s no wonder Ann Arbor is the current leader in cannabis businesses to date. Midland Daily News reports the city with the most dispensaries in Michigan is, “Ann Arbor, with its longstanding tolerance for pot, reigned supreme as the city with the most active recreational cannabis retail businesses.

While Ann Arbor spreads its 24 dispensaries among a population of more than 120,000, Bay City, along I-75 north of Saginaw, has 22 dispensaries for a city with 33,000 people.

The other top 21 Michigan cities with the most active recreational cannabis retail business licenses are as follows:

Battle Creek: 20

Lansing: 16

Kalamazoo: 14

Big Rapids: 12

Muskegon: 12

Grand Rapids: 12

Adrian: 8

Burton: 8

Flint: 8

Jackson: 8

River Rouge: 7

Marquette: 7

Lapeer: 6

Ypsilanti: 6

Kalkaska: 6

Coldwater: 6

Hazel Park: 6

Manistee: 5

Buchanan: 5

Morenci: 5

Portage: 5,”.

Looks like no matter where you go in Michigan: Up North, West coast on Lake Michigan, East coast on Lake Huron, downtown Detroit, in the U.P., or in the middle of the state, there is a dispensary for any cannabis need.

What are some common challenges faced by dispensaries

In conclusion, dispensaries face no shortage of challenges — from regulatory hurdles to complex insurance claims. Having the right professionals in your corner, like a knowledgeable public adjuster, can make all the difference in protecting your cannabis business and keeping operations running smoothly.

There was a time in the past when you had to walk to your local bank and get approved for a loan in order to start a business. That’s not always the case today, thanks to the emergence of alternative lending.

You see this shift worldwide. More and more borrowers are moving away from “one-size-fits-all” bank loans to alternative business financing options that are not only faster but more tailored to how modern businesses actually operate. According to a report from Market.us, “The global alternative financing market size is expected to be worth around $46.2 billion by 2035, from $10.3 billion in 2025, growing at a CAGR of 16.2% during the forecast period from 2026 to 2035.”

While many individuals make use of alternative financing, business borrowers represent the majority of users, making up 71% of the demand. This is because nearly 40% of businesses struggle to get their bank loans approved due to lack of collateral or insufficient documentation requirements.

In the U.S., the alternative lending market is exploding. A report from Research and Markets stated that the alternative financing market in the country is valued at around $63 billion and is projected to hit more than $105 billion by 2029—nearly double. The implication is that alternative lending is moving away from being a “tech thing” or “niche” experiment into the regular lending market.

But, who exactly is using this money? Here are the top businesses that use alternative lending the most in the U.S.A.

Retail & Restaurants

Both the retail and restaurant industries operate on a seasonal business rhythm. This means that their activity levels, revenue, and staffing needs fluctuate predictably throughout the year. These recurring, short-term patterns are driven by weather, holidays, or school calendars. For instance, retail businesses typically see a surge in sales during holiday seasons, while restaurants and other businesses in the tourism and hospitality industry see peak activity and revenue in summer or school holidays.

This means that outside of those peak seasons, these businesses have to deal with surviving slow periods, during which they often turn to alternative financing to get through the next peak season. Most restaurants and retail businesses often turn to merchant cash advances (MCA) to pull through.

According to Market Research Future, the retail sector, comprising brick-and-mortar stores and e-commerce platforms, and restaurants are the top 2 industries in terms of market share in the MCA market. Retail businesses need quick access to capital for inventory, tech upgrade, and operations, whereas restaurants require funding for expansion.

An MCA works like this: Businesses receive a lump sum of cash up front with the agreement that they will pay it back by giving the lender a fixed percentage of their daily credit card sales, which provides a flexible safety net. When they have a slow period, they pay back less, while if they have more sales, they pay back more. However, this often comes with high fees, which make it a more expensive financing option than a bank loan in the long run.

Trucking & Manufacturing

Another group of businesses that use alternative financing are those in the trucking and manufacturing industries. These business-to-business (B2B) companies typically have high invoice volumes and long receivables cycles, which means their biggest headache is the “waiting game.”

For instance, a trucking company might deliver a load today but have to wait 30, 60, or 90 days to get paid. In the meantime, they still need funds to pay for fuel, driver wages, and maintenance. Manufacturers also deal with similar payment terms and/or delayed payments.

To smooth out their cash flow, logistics and transportation companies like carriers and freight brokers turn to invoice factoring. According to a report from Fortune Business Insights, manufacturing and transportation & logistics make up most of the global factoring market share in 2026.

This alternative financing option allows these companies to “sell” their unpaid invoices to a lender in exchange for a cash advance of around 80% to 90% of the invoice value upfront. When the invoices are finally paid, the lender takes their cut and a small fee and gives the remaining balance to the business.

Minority & Micro-Businesses

Another group of businesses in the country that are more reliant on alternative financing than others include minority-owned businesses (MBEs) and micro-businesses (those with no employees other than the owner). Aside from using their personal funds, these businesses have learned to latch on to online lenders as a vital lifeline.

In the case of many MBEs, they often face higher hurdles when walking into a traditional bank. Research shows that Black and Hispanic business owners are more likely to apply for traditional financing than white owners, but they are significantly less likely to receive the full amount they need or are more likely to receive no financing at all.

Meanwhile, micro-businesses use online lenders at much higher rates than larger firms because they often lack the formal credit history, audited financials, and other “hard information” that big banks demand.

Startups

Businesses that are just starting out often turn to crowdfunding as an alternative source of capital. This alternative financing option allows them to reach a large number of people, typically via the internet, who are willing to give small amounts of money for their capital. In exchange, these contributors receive a product (reward-based), a share in the company’s equity (equity-based), or payment for principal plus interest (debt-based).

In 2024, the U.S. crowdfunding market was valued at $0.65 billion ($650 million) and is expected to increase to $2.06 billion in 2034, with a projected CAGR of 12.2% from 2025 to 2034, according to this report. The major driving force of this increase is rising interest in equity-based models and investor appetite for early-stage innovation.

From Last Resort to Primary Funding Source

Alternative lending was more of a last resort for businesses in the past. Today, it has become a primary source of funding for many businesses, especially those who have a hard time getting approved for a bank loan or credit from other traditional financial institutions.

Despite the high costs, many businesses still avail of funding from alternative financing providers. Thanks to the access to funds and speed of approval or loan release, many businesses can keep their dreams—and the economy—moving forward.

From cultivators and extractors to testing labs and dispensaries, navigating insurance claims in the cannabis industry is one of the most complex challenges the cannabis industry faces, right along with filing federal tax returns to securing loans, financing, and managing payroll, as well as providing employee benefits.

These businesses also face major challenges with payment options for clients and patients, as credit card companies are still apprehensive about supporting cannabis companies since cannabis is still federally illegal. However, to date, forty-two states have legalized the highly recognized healing plant.

Federal tax laws, according to The National Cannabis Association, present challenges for the industry because, “Originally intended to apply to illegal drug dealers when first enacted in 1982, the 280E provision is now primarily applied to medical and adult-use cannabis dispensaries operating legally under state law.

The unintended consequences of 280E enforcement on legal businesses threatens the viability of state-licensed cannabis providers, leads to the loss of valuable jobs and tax revenues, and limits businesses ability to grow and invest in their communities. The unfair application of the tax code on legal businesses is also hampering the industry’s ability to effectively compete with illegal drug dealers, who generally do not file or pay taxes at all,”.

I would assume that negative information around the healing properties of cannabis in comparison to Big Pharma prescription drugs has been a challenge as well. Communicating its validity as a viable, holistic alternative to chemicals with adverse side effects presents enormous challenges.

For example, should someone wish to treat their anxiety with cannabis, they must be able to speak freely with their health care provider to prevent complications such as serotonin syndrome. Let’s see what the experts have to say.

*Note: All content within this article is meant for informational purposes only and is in no way a replacement for professional medical or psychological advice or support. Seek immediate and appropriate care from a healthcare professional should you or a trusted loved one deem it necessary.

What is serotonin syndrome

Serotonin toxicity results from medications that increase serotonin levels in the body: medications such as those for pain and antidepressants, some herbal supplements like St. John’s Wort, and some over-the-counter drugs. When taken together, they increase the risk of serotonin toxicity.

The Mayo Clinic shares that, “Serotonin syndrome can occur when you increase the dose of certain medications or start taking a new drug. It’s most often caused by combining medications that contain serotonin, such as a migraine medication and an antidepressant. Some illicit drugs and dietary supplements are associated with serotonin syndrome.

Milder forms of serotonin syndrome may go away within a day or two of stopping the medications that cause symptoms and, sometimes, after taking drugs that block serotonin,”.

I much prefer the healthy, organic, or homeopathic route to some of my ailments versus using pain medication, so I am prone to serotonin withdrawal syndrome.

However, it is imperative that I fully disclose ALL of my medicinal solutions to my healthcare providers, including supplements, certain massage practices, essential oils, acupuncture, cannabis, chiropractic remedies, etc., or I am at risk of developing this potentially dangerous syndrome.

In fact, I found that taking both St. John’s Wort and Lyrica concurrently places me in a high-risk category for developing serotonin withdrawal syndrome. Furthermore, when I take Zrytek, an antihistamine, it lowers its effectiveness and increases the risk of developing chronic sinus infections.

Patients with serotonin toxicity may experience other symptoms, including but not limited to:

Confusion

Restlessness

Shivering

Increased heart rate

Blood pressure

Sweating

Dilated pupils

Muscle rigidity

Seizures

Coma or death in severe cases

Central nervous system medicines such as anti-anxiety, antipsychotics, antidepressants, amphetamines, and opioids have effects influenced by massage. Depending on the type of massage, it may either increase or decrease the effectiveness of these medications. Abnormal levels of serotonin have been linked to many mental health disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety, which, coincidentally, addicts and alcoholics are prone to.

Serotonin toxicity, or serotonin syndrome, is severe because it is a drug-induced medical condition occurring when there is excessive serotonin in the brain’s synapses. Symptoms of serotonin toxicity could present with the following combination of symptoms:

Neuromuscular

Autonomic

Psychological

Serotonin is a vital neurotransmitter in our bodies that is integral to maintaining normal brain and nerve cell function. It is naturally produced and necessary for mood, appetite, sleep, and memory.

How do you calm serotonin syndrome?

Massage is an effective way to calm serotonin syndrome. The effects of massage therapy on serotonin syndrome can be further enhanced by incorporating aromatherapy into the session. Essential oils are used in aromatherapy to stimulate the senses and provide a calming and therapeutic effect. Oils such as lavender, bergamot, and rose have been shown to reduce symptoms.

Getting a good night’s sleep is incredibly important, especially for folks dealing with serotonin syndrome, and massage therapy can make a real difference here. When your sleep quality improves, it helps ease the symptoms of serotonin syndrome, since serotonin plays a big role in reducing tension.

But that’s not all massage therapy does. It’s a powerful tool for enhancing our overall well-being. By knocking down stress levels and boosting circulation, it’s particularly handy for those with serotonin syndrome, where stress can really wreak havoc.

Massage helps bring harmony back to a body that’s been through the wringer, often leading to reduced cortisol levels, a better mood, and fewer feelings of depression. Plus, massage releases endorphins, nature’s way of helping with pain and boosting your mood.

Here are some more physiological effects of massage on the body:

Aids in digestion

Stimulates the circulatory system

It boosts immunity

Helps to regulate the respiratory system

Maintains bone health

Aids in skin regeneration

What are the challenges of the cannabis industry?

In conclusion, the cannabis industry faces multifaceted obstacles—from federal tax burdens and banking limitations to patient safety concerns like serotonin syndrome.

Overcoming these challenges requires open communication between patients and providers, policy reform, and continued education about cannabis as a legitimate therapeutic option.

As a proud Michigander, I understand why people from all over choose to vacation and travel to our beautiful peninsula that is surrounded by four out of five of the Great Lakes, which include:

The best sunsets and waves of Lake Michigan (my favorite!)

Lake Huron, with its incredible sunrises and rock hunting opportunities

Phenomenal fishing and boating on Lake Erie

The mighty Lake Superior, with stunning views and cliff jumping

I also know first-hand how hectic everything gets in Michigan during peak travel times. Especially in the summertime, it is such a busy tourist time – good luck trying to get into a hotel in Northern Michigan, let alone a campground.

According to the experts at D-Business (Detroit’s Premier Business Journal), their tourism data research reports that, “Michigan’s tourism industry contributed a total of $54.8 billion in economic impact to the state’s economy in 2024, according to a new study from Tourism Economics released today by Travel Michigan, part of the Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC) in Lansing.

The study found 131.2 million visitors traveled to Michigan in 2024, spending $30.7 billion in destinations across the state — up 4.9 percent from $29.3 billion in 2023 — and generating $3.6 billion in state and local tax revenue.

‘Michigan’s tourism industry boosts local economies, creates opportunity for small businesses, and supports more than 350,000 Michigan jobs,’ says Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Michigan’s visitor economy supported 351,292 jobs in 2024, according to the study, which equates to one-in-17 of all jobs in Michigan, including 96,000 jobs in the food and beverage sector.

A separate report from SMARInsights released in April found that the Pure Michigan advertising campaign influenced more than 789,000 leisure trips to Michigan from national, regional, and in-state markets in 2024. Visitors to the state who were influenced by the campaign spent more than $1.3 billion in Michigan communities in 2024, generating more than $79 million in state tax revenue.

The campaign also is said to have successfully encouraged travelers to stay longer, participate in more activities, and discover more new destinations during their visits to Michigan in 2024 when compared with visitors who were not aware of the campaign,”.

Pure Michigan Commercials

Of course, I am probably a little biased because I adore the Pure Michigan campaign. In fact, sometimes I get choked up and cry happy, sentimental tears during some commercials.

Probably for a couple of reasons. One, as I said, I am a proud lifelong Michigander born and raised. And two, I am an advertising professional who has watched this campaign, in particular, bring in so much revenue to our state and raise awareness among folks elsewhere who had no idea just how beautiful and awesome our Great Lake state really is.

When I volunteered on the Ann Arbor Ad Club board (a local chapter of the American Advertising Federation), we had the honor of bringing in some speakers who worked on the Pure Michigan campaign during its inception many years ago.

At that time, McCann World Group was the agency of record for the state of Michigan’s travel and tourism. They said that for every dollar the state spent on the iconic campaign, we received three dollars back in travel spending. That’s a humongous return on investment!

Recently, MMGY was awarded the business, and in a press release, they announced that, “The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) has appointed MMGY Global as advertising agency of record for its iconic Pure Michigan brand following a competitive review process. MMGY will assume the duties immediately, including the expansion of its Michigan presence with a new Detroit office as well as the additions of new staff and partner suppliers.

As a firm focused on innovative and integrated marketing for the travel industry, MMGY’s expertise built over 40 years will inform Pure Michigan’s brand and creative strategy, paid media investments and digital content storytelling.

‘To have the opportunity to build the next chapter in Michigan’s tourism and economic development success is not only exciting but certainly a very serious responsibility. Working with great businesses and leaders across the state, we have big plans to evolve the Pure Michigan platform while connecting its message to both past and new travelers from around the world. What a privilege,’ said Clayton Reid, CEO of MMGY Global,”.

I always wanted to work on this campaign!

Places to visit in Michigan during summer

As an advertising professional, I am not only a huge supporter of travel and tourism in Michigan but also an avid outdoor enthusiast. Throughout my life, I have had the privilege of visiting many of Michigan’s top travel spots, as well as some of the hidden gems – known only to locals.

For example, one year, my cousins and our friends, about twenty of us in our early twenties, were camping at a campground. We arrived after midnight and were setting up our tents when the campground manager came by to let us know it probably wasn’t the ideal spot for us.

He was a local and let us in on an unknown, unofficial spot to camp on the shores of Lake Michigan in Frankfort, a few miles up the road. Turns out, it was (and still is) one of the coolest and most beautiful spots I have ever camped!

Speaking of shoreline, did you know that we have the longest freshwater coastline? Most notably, data about Pure Michigan’s water wonderland, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), reports the following: “Natural resources at a glance:

Michigan is home to 10,899 inland lakes (five acres or more).

Michigan has 3,300 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, the longest U.S. freshwater coastline.

Michigan has more total shoreline than any state except Alaska.

Michigan has 52,053 miles of streams.

In Michigan you’re never more than 6 miles from a body of water or 85 miles from a Great Lake – which means you’re never more than six miles from great fishing!,”.

Below are some of my favorite State and National Parks to visit, located Up North in the lower peninsula:

Huron Manistee forest in Oscoda, on the Au Sable River

Manistee National Forest, Manistee, footsteps from Lake Michigan

Ludington State Park, on the shores of Lake Michigan

Lakeport State Park, on the shores of Lake Huron

Proud Lake State Park, on the Huron River (close to home)

Seven Lakes State Park, for Halloween camping (close to home)

Algonac State Park, on the shores of Lake Huron (great pier fishing)

Burt Lake State Park, on Burt Lake (which connects to the Indian River, connecting to Mullet Lake, which feeds into the Cheboygan River, which leads to Lake Michigan)

Mears State Park, on the shores of Lake Michigan, is minutes away from the world-renowned Silver Lake Sand Dunes

Michigan tourism data

In conclusion, because Michigan’s natural beauty and thriving tourism industry make it an unforgettable destination, I am especially grateful to call this Great Lakes state home.

Natural disasters not only pose a severe threat of displacement to everyday families, pets, and community centers such as schools, places of worship, or sports fields/areas, but also affect businesses where these community members work and do business.

For example, natural disasters with heavy rain can lead to floods in states such as Washington and other Pacific Northwest areas, resulting in major water damage and disaster cleanup, which immediately require the components of a disaster recovery plan.

According to California’s official government website, “Every business should have a plan. Business continuity planning must account for both man-made and natural disasters. You should plan in advance to manage any emergency. Be prepared to assess the situation, use common sense and available resources to take care of yourself, your co-workers and your business’s recovery.

Consider evacuation planning, shelter in place measures, emergency supplies – both life sustaining and lifesaving, and communications. Install fire extinguishers, smoke alarms and detectors in appropriate places. Consider the ways in which people, products, supplies and other things get into and leave your building or facility.

Take the Necessary Precautions

Have a Business Continuity Plan

Protect Your Employees

Communicate Plans with Customers and Suppliers

Review Your Insurance Coverage,”.

For the everyday person, FEMA shares that, “Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry. Floods are the most common disaster in the United States. Failing to evacuate flooded areas or entering flood waters can lead to injury or death.

Floods may:

Result from rain, snow, coastal storms, storm surges and overflows of dams and other water systems.

Develop slowly or quickly. Flash floods can come with no warning.

Cause outages, disrupt transportation, damage buildings and create landslides.

If you are under a flood warning:

Find safe shelter right away.

Do not walk, swim or drive through flood waters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!

Remember, just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.

Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.

Depending on the type of flooding:

Evacuate if told to do so.

Move to higher ground or a higher floor.

Stay where you are,”.

Severe weather impact on businesses statistics

According to a recent report by Harvard Business Review, “Severe weather disruptions add up. Every year, weather variability is estimated to cost $630 billion for the U.S. alone, or 3.5% of GDP. And yet, this aggregate number adds up positive and negative weather impacts and masks the true extent to which abnormal weather harms individual businesses operating in utilities, retail, food processing, transportation, and construction, among other industries,”.

Severe weather events have a significant impact on businesses across various sectors. These disruptions manifest in many forms, including physical damage, supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, increased operational costs, and reduced customer demand. These factors, when combined, can severely strain a company’s financial performance and overall sustainability.

One of the most apparent ways severe weather can impact a business is through physical damage to infrastructure and facilities. Severe storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods can cause significant damage to buildings, equipment, and inventory, leading to costly repairs and replacements and ultimately resulting in further loss of productive capacity and operational downtime. The extent of the damage can vary, ranging from minor disruptions to complete shutdowns, depending on the severity of the weather event.

Supply chain disruptions are another primary concern for businesses amid severe weather events. Disruptions in transportation networks, such as road closures or flight cancellations, can hinder the movement of goods and raw materials, resulting in production delays and inventory shortages.

For example, a retailer heavily dependent on imports may face challenges if the port of entry is temporarily closed due to a storm. Such disruptions can lead to lost sales opportunities and dissatisfied customers.

Response in emergency management

Okay, so you have all the recommended emergency response items accounted for. The disaster comes, and now it’s time to implement what you and your team have been preparing for.

A response in emergency management comprises coordinating and managing resources (including personnel, equipment, and supplies) using the Incident Command System (ICS) in an all-hazards approach, along with measures to protect life/property/environmental safety.

In the event of a flood emergency, effective response and resource coordination are crucial to save lives, protect property, and minimize environmental impacts. Floods can occur suddenly and with little warning, making it essential to have a well-prepared emergency management plan in place.

When faced with a flood emergency, the ICS plays a vital role in coordinating response efforts, enabling efficient communication and collaboration among agencies, organizations, and stakeholders. By establishing clear roles and responsibilities through the ICS structure, teams can effectively manage resources, make informed decisions, and respond to changing conditions during the flood event.

Personnel, equipment, and supplies are critical components of an effective flood response. Emergency management teams must ensure that personnel are trained and equipped to handle flood-related tasks, including search and rescue operations, evacuation procedures, and damage assessment.

Having access to specialized equipment, such as boats, water pumps, and emergency shelters, can also greatly enhance response efforts and aid in the protection of individuals in flood-affected areas.

In a flood emergency, the safety of individuals, property, and the environment must always be the top priority. Evacuation orders may be necessary to ensure the safety of residents in at-risk areas, and shelters should be set up to accommodate those displaced by the floodwaters. Additionally, efforts should be made to safeguard critical infrastructure, such as bridges, roads, and utilities, to prevent further damage and disruption.

Environmental safety is another essential consideration during flood response efforts. Contaminated floodwaters can pose significant health risks, and measures should be taken to minimize the spread of pollutants and protect natural ecosystems. Prompt cleanup and mitigation efforts can help prevent long-term environmental damage and promote the recovery of affected areas.

Overall, an effective response to a flood emergency requires preparedness, coordination, and swift action. By following an all-hazards approach and applying the principles of emergency management, responders can work together to mitigate the impacts of flooding, protect communities, and support recovery efforts. Remember, staying informed, staying prepared, and working together are vital components of a successful flood response effort

Natural disaster recovery plan

In conclusion, preparing for natural disasters isn’t optional—it’s essential. With clear plans, coordinated response efforts, and strong communication, businesses and communities can protect people, reduce losses, and recover more quickly when severe weather strikes.

Having debts isn’t necessarily good or bad. Many consider it a convenient business tool at their disposal. Getting a loan has its benefits, such as increasing cash flow and ensuring business continuity or becoming a lifeline that keeps the business afloat. However, when unexpected events throw a wrench at your carefully planned payment scheme, it can become harder for your business to meet its payment obligations.

When debt becomes unmanageable, debt restructuring or business restructure loans presents a way out. It might include asking a lender for a temporary reduction of the loan’s interest rate or requesting a payment date adjustment from a vendor. Either way, debt restructuring entails the modification of the terms of existing debts to the mutual satisfaction of you and your creditors so that the debts become more manageable and easier for you to pay. It’s essentially a renegotiation of the terms to ensure you avoid defaulting on your payment obligations.

A business restructure loan (or debt restructuring) isn’t a new loan, but a process of renegotiating terms of existing debt with lenders to make payments more manageable, often as a last resort before default or bankruptcy. Reputable companies can be an invaluable resource in this type of situation by funding quickly and with less restrictive covenants. Since the asset is the collateral, there is maximum liquidity and fewer rules. Line of credit grows with asset growth. This flexible solution effectively bridges the gap in business transactions, accelerating the sales cycle.

Thanks to these modifications, debt restructuring eases some of the financial pressure you might be feeling, restores cash flow, and ultimately enables you to regain control over the finances of your business. So, it’s not a sign of failure but rather a strategic tool to improve liquidity and ensure long-term viability.

Taking on debt is a normal part of doing business. In fact, around 70% of small businesses have outstanding debts, according to a survey by the Federal Reserve.

Debt-for-Equity Swap

A type of debt restructuring that’s most common among businesses typically in severe financial distress, i.e., with high debt, but show strong growth potential is debt-for-equity swap or debt-to-equity conversion.

The modification of credit terms here deals with the cancellation of a portion or all of the business’ outstanding debts in exchange for a predetermined amount of stock or equity (ownership) in the business. In other words, creditors become shareholders (owners) of the business by exchanging outstanding debt for equity shares, swapping priority for repayment for priority for dividend payments or their share of the profits.

A debt-for-equity swap transaction is typically valued at current market rates, but the debtor may offer a higher exchange value to entice creditors to participate in the swap.

Because the lender is now an owner, the obligation to pay for that portion of the debt that was exchanged for equity is now eliminated. A debt-for-equity swap also helps a business reduce its debt burden, enhance cash flow, and avoid bankruptcy. However, because there are now more shareholders, the original owners’ control over the business is diluted and it can decrease the value of existing shares.

Debt Haircut (Principal Reduction)

A debt haircut refers to a debt restructuring agreement wherein a creditor forgives, i.e., deletes, eliminates or cancels, a portion of the principal balance owed by a business. For instance, if a business owes its creditor $500,000, the latter may accept to receive a discounted amount, say $350,000, as full payment.

Creditors often allow this setup when they believe that the alternative would be a worse outcome. That is, for them, it’s better to receive some money back than nothing at all if the business defaults or declares bankruptcy. However, they will typically only agree to a debt haircut after they have performed an exhaustive audit of your books, i.e., they are convinced that your business is truly in financial distress and can’t afford to pay the full amount.

From the business’ point of view, a debt haircut results in owing a smaller amount of money, thereby reducing their debt burden. That is, the loan becomes more manageable, thanks to the reduction, and they have a higher chance of actually being able to pay it off.

However, note that a debt haircut is considered to be taxable income. The IRS will be at your doors to collect cancellation of debt income as a result. Also note that a debt haircut will be reported to credit bureaus as “settled for less than full balance,” which will make it difficult for your business to secure new loans for several years.

Informal Debt Repayment Agreements

Often referred to as “workovers” or “voluntary arrangements,” these are private negotiations between a business and its creditors to change the terms of the loan without involving the court system. Businesses and their lenders often use these agreements to preserve their professional relationship and avoid lengthy and expensive formal legal proceedings.

Term Extension

Term extension refers to a type of debt restructuring that spreads payments over a longer period of time. Essentially, it allows you to extend the term, or payment period, on your loan.

For instance, an original debt agreement comes with a 5-year term, but with a term extension, this can be moved to 10 years. In other words, the original loan term is modified so that the business can spread out its repayment over a longer period.

A term extension not only gives you more time to pay back your loan, it also provides for a reduction in the amount of monthly payments you have to make, one that is more manageable for you so that you don’t fall behind on them. The downside, however, is that you might end up paying more for your loan in total than what was originally computed.

Getting a term extension depends on several factors, including your financial situation and the reason you need an extension.

It is a common practice when paying supplier invoices, especially among seasonal businesses and growth companies. Businesses working on cash flow optimization and improving their financial metrics for mergers and acquisitions or other purposes may also take advantage of a term extension.

Table 1. Benefits of Term Extension

Benefits for Buyers

Benefits for Suppliers

Improved working capital Smarter cash flow management and better cash flow timing Increased financial flexibility Enhanced debt capacity Gain more control over growth Competitive advantages, e.g., fund innovation, marketing, or competitive responses

Strengthened buyer relationships Access to early payment options Volume security Preferred status Business growth support

Interest Rate Reduction

In an interest rate reduction agreement, the creditor agrees to lower the percentage of interest charged on the outstanding principal loan amount. As a result, the monthly repayments become more affordable; it doesn’t cancel the debt as a debt haircut would do nor does it extend the loan term.

Payment Holidays (Deferment)

Similar to the holidays we go on to take a break from work and daily life, a payment holiday is a temporary freeze on your monthly loan repayments. You could look at it as a deferment of loan repayments for a set period of time.

It’s the best type of debt restructuring for businesses that are experiencing a temporary cash flow gap, for instance, if you’re a new or seasonal business or one that’s experiencing a one-time disruption. Payment holidays enable the business to build up its cash reserves. It’s like hitting the pause button on your loan payments to stock up on cash before resuming payments.

Once the payment holiday is over, your creditor will usually require you to either extend the loan (term extension) or increase your monthly payments. This is to allow for accrued interest to be included when you resume payments.

Insurance coverage can be tricky since cannabis is still illegal federally. Living in Michigan, one of the United States’ states where cannabis was legalized first medically, then recreationally, we have seen an enormous number of dispensaries pop up in the Southeast area. It is wild to see many located in other parts of the state as well, and to see billboards advertising for the legal dispensaries. I never thought I would see this in my lifetime!

Of course, the state of California was among the first states to legalize cannabis. With all of the new cannabis related businesses popping up, they were among the leading pioneers in developing liability coverage and navigating cannabis insurance claims.

Furthermore, since cannabis is illegal federally, some insurance carriers are apprehensive about honoring claims, so public adjusters have also stepped into the game.

Notably, a client of ours notes that navigating insurance claims in the cannabis industry is complex—but that they are there to simplify the process, maximize recovery, and help a business move forward. As public adjusters who work exclusively with cannabis operators, they understand the regulatory and insurance challenges others miss.

From cultivators and extractors to testing labs and dispensaries, they represent businesses across the supply chain.
Cannabis and serotonin

Speaking from personal experience, I seek to find the healthy, organic, or homeopathic route to some of my ailments, versus using pain medication, so I am prone to serotonin withdrawal syndrome.

It is imperative that I fully disclose ALL of my medicinal solutions to my healthcare providers, including supplements, certain massage practices, essential oils, acupuncture, previous heavy cannabis use, chiropractic remedies, etc., or I am at risk of developing this potentially dangerous syndrome.

Serotonin toxicity results from medications that increase serotonin levels in the body: medications such as those for pain and antidepressants, some herbal supplements like St. John’s Wort, and some over-the-counter drugs. When taken together, they increase the risk of serotonin toxicity.

Reports from the National Institute of Health suggest that, “The increasing availability of cannabis administration devices (e.g. ‘vapes’ and ‘dab pens’) and medicinal cannabis with high ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentrations may introduce novel complications of cannabis use. Cannabinoids predominantly act through the endogenous cannabinoid system, but animal studies suggest these compounds can also stimulate serotonin receptors. This is in addition to CYP450 interactions altering the metabolism of serotonergic agents. Recent cases from the United States suggest that high concentrate cannabis use can precipitate serotonin syndrome in patients taking antidepressants. We report a case, with the informed consent of the patient, that suggests recurrent induction of serotonin syndrome requiring hospitalisation in the context of cannabis use,”.

Patients with serotonin toxicity may experience other symptoms, including but not limited to:

Confusion

Restlessness

Shivering

Increased heart rate

Blood pressure

Sweating

Dilated pupils

Muscle rigidity

Seizures

Coma or death in severe situations

Abnormal levels of serotonin have been linked to many mental health disorders, such as depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety, which, coincidentally, addicts and alcoholics are prone to.

What is serotonin syndrome

Serotonin toxicity, or serotonin syndrome, is severe because it is a drug-induced medical condition occurring when there is excessive serotonin in the brain’s synapses. Symptoms of serotonin toxicity could present with the following combination of symptoms:

Neuromuscular

Autonomic

Psychological

Serotonin is a vital neurotransmitter in our bodies that is integral to maintaining normal brain and nerve cell function. It is naturally produced and necessary for mood, appetite, sleep, and memory.

The Mayo Clinic defines this syndrome as, “Serotonin syndrome can occur when you increase the dose of certain medications or start taking a new drug.

What is cannabis liability coverage?

In conclusion, cannabis liability coverage is essentially the safety net that protects cannabis businesses from the unique risks tied to an industry still navigating federal illegality, evolving regulations, and complex insurance landscapes.

As more states—Michigan included—continue expanding legal access, this specialized coverage helps cultivators, processors, and dispensaries safeguard their operations, recover from losses, and stay compliant.

Furthermore, with public adjusters stepping in to advocate for operators when claims get complicated, cannabis businesses have stronger support than ever to keep moving forward in a rapidly growing market.

As the cold winds start to whip fiercely and the temperatures become bitterly frigid, we know winter is coming and will be upon us in the very near future. Frozen pipes in Michigan are a common occurrence, especially in commercial buildings with tall, open ceilings that are difficult to heat or when the heat goes out due to a winter storm.

Winter storms can cause havoc and create chaos on the roads as well as for businesses. My ex-husband works in commercial snow removal, and although he would like to attend to residential accounts sooner, if it is during the workweek, his contracts stipulate that he must clear the commercial parking lots and sidewalks as soon as an inch of snow falls. Furthermore, those accounts must also be salted immediately.

In Michigan, we have numerous businesses that revolve around the auto industry, occupying a multitude of large industrial buildings and employing many people. Not only must they ensure their roads are cleared of snow and ice, but they must also take special caution to prevent frozen pipes that could cause a whole different slew of problems during a winter storm.

According to the American Red Cross, common causes of frozen pipes and why pipe freezing is a problem are because, “Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes.

Pipes that freeze most frequently are:

Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.

Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.

Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation,”.

How many types of winter storms in Michigan

Businesses face significant liability issues if an employee or client slips and falls on their property. They could potentially lose their business over a natural disaster such as a winter storm. Hence why my ex-husband’s contracts specifically outline the urgency of getting to those properties first and foremost.

Here are some of the winter storms that occur in my home state of Michigan:

Blizzard

Snowstorm

Ice storm

Hailstorm

Wind chills that create dangerously low temperatures

Sleet

Lake effect snow

Snow squalls

The State of Michigan’s official government website defines the following winter weather occurrences as, “A major winter storm can last for several days, with high winds, freezing rain, heavy snowfall, and cold temperatures. Extreme cold can bring on health emergencies for people who live in poorly insulated homes and those who are stranded and attempt to walk for help.

Each year, dozens of Americans die from exposure to cold and fires due to dangerous use of heaters. Space heaters and fireplaces increase the risk of household fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Know the terms

Wind Chill – A dangerous part of cold weather is the wind chill. The wind chill is based on the rate of heat loss. As the wind increases, heat is carried away from the body faster and that makes body temperatures goes down. Animals are also affected by wind chill.

Winter Weather Advisory – Winter weather advisories are sent when snow, freezing rain, freezing drizzle or sleet is possible. These kinds of winter weather conditions can lead to difficult travel, power outages, and become dangerous to your health if you are not careful and prepared.

Winter Storm Watch – A winter storm watch alerts the public that there is a chance for a blizzard, heavy snow or heavy sleet. Winter storm watches are usually issued 12 to 48 hours before the beginning of a winter storm.

Winter Storm Warning – A winter storm warning is issued when dangerous winter weather including heavy snow, heavy freezing rain, or heavy sleet is happening or very likely about to happen. Winter Storm warnings are usually issued 12 to 24 hours before the event is expected to begin.

Blizzard Warning – Blizzard warning are sent when there are high amounts of snow and wind (35 miles per hour or more) that limits how far you can see for at least 3 hours,”.

How to prevent frozen pipes in winter

Growing up in a townhouse cooperative with thirty-four buildings, each with eight units, we were fortunate to live in the second unit from the end of our building. However, that also made us vulnerable to harsh winter winds with no buildings to block the whipping, cold, freezing air.

As a result, unfortunately, it took more heat to keep our townhome warm, and it also put us at a higher risk of frozen pipes during Michigan’s cold winter months.

There were a few things that we could do to hopefully prevent frozen pipes. Below are some of the things our maintenance teams suggested as preventative measures:

Turn the faucets on a slow trickle

Turn the heat up

Open the cabinet doors that house the piping

Seal cracks and drafts

Put plastic on the windows

Insulate any exposed pipes

The U.S. Department of Energy shares that, “Saving energy is good. But please, please think of your pipes before you go too crazy with the idea.

Frozen pipes are a big deal. If the water in your pipes starts freezing, you run the risk of that pipe exploding, and that’s definitely not what you want to happen in the dead of winter.

What you’ll need to do is based on the region you live in, so you may want to look up your state or city’s Web site and see if they have recommendations on how to prepare your house for the winter. There are relatively few places in the United States where you’d never have to worry about frozen pipes.

According to Weather.com, southern states generally start having issues with frozen pipes when the temperature reaches about 20 degrees Fahrenheit (the distinction is made because houses in the south are less likely to build homes with pipes located inside or in the warm areas of your home.) The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program has a file that shows the probability of frozen pipes in your region (PDF 115 KB),”.

What are common causes of frozen pipes?

In conclusion, frozen pipes are a serious winter hazard, especially in Michigan’s industrial and residential buildings. With proactive steps and awareness of storm risks, you can protect your property and avoid costly, disruptive damage throughout the entire season.
