By doing simple back-toning exercises, you not only strengthen your back but also reduce stress; you will also improve your appearance. Your back tries to support the extra weight and causes excess strain on the lower back muscles. By losing weight&lt;br /&gt;, you can reduce strain and pain in your back. ERP systems are designed to integrate all business functions and information within one computer database while the business processes provide the flowing structure of activities and interactions among the workers that connect all of the departments creating a cohesive, efficient whole. Many organizations have tried to increase efficiency and profitability by reengineering their business processes (Attaran, 2000; Attaran and Wood, 1999; Li, Macquire, &amp;amp; Yao, 2003). However, Attaran (2000) cites Hall et al. (2003) as finding that a majority of BPR initiatives resulted in less than 5% improvement. Attaran further cites Hammer and Champy (1993) as stating that between 50% and 70% of all BPR efforts do not achieve their goals. ERP software providers, in their own quest to remain competitive, have developed additional tools for their programs to assist organizations with establishing efficient business processes and participating in e-Commerce (Cardoso et al, 2003). Where IDV is high, the society emphasizes the role of the individual; where IDV is low, the society emphasizes the role of the group. This was explained by Triandis (1972).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Uncertainty avoidance index (UAI) is the degree to which a society is willing to accept and deal with uncertainty. Where UAI is high, the society is concerned with certainty and security, and seeks to reduce uncertainty; where UAI is low, the society is comfortable with a high degree of uncertainty and is open to the unknown.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Power distance index (PDI) is the degree to which power differences are accepted and sanctioned by a society. Where PDI is high, the society believes that there should be a well defined hierarchy in which everyone has a rightful place; where PDI is low, the prevalent belief is that all people should have equal rights and the opportunity to change their position in the society.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Masculinity (MAS) is the degree to which traditional male values are important to a society. The dimension incorporates ideas of time and activity. Here, for simplicity, CD is defined as a time orientation only – taking a long term or short term view. A society that is high on CD has a long time horizon and looks to the future. A society which is low on CD has a shorter time horizon and is more concerned with events in the present and immediate future.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hofstede reports scores from 1 to 100 for each country in his sample. The scores reported by Hofstede are based on employees within one organiza­tion, a large U.S. multinational company. These scores should not, therefore, be interpreted as an accurate descrip­tion of the national culture as a whole; rather, they should be seen as an indication of the similarities and differences that one might expect to find among employees in this type of organization in different countries.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition, these scores represent a central tendency in a particular population, but there is likely to be a wide array of values in any coun­try; organizations and industries will attract and retain individuals with value systems that fit into the organizational culture. The guiding parameters for an organization’s structural design are the number of management levels, level of delegation, staffing, reporting, linking and control mechanisms (Nadler and Tushman). We will focus our discussion on the dependence of organizational structures on Information Technology.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Information Technology has a telling effect on all the design parameters of classical organizational structure. Physical proximity of the task groups is no longer a requirement for the purpose of supervision. Other design parameters like, linking and control mechanisms have been automated (Rockart and Short 189-219). Information Technology has led to enhanced mission effectiveness through thoughtful adaptation of organizational structures. Multi-layered managerial tasks, as existent in classical organizations, have been thinned owing to electronic mailing, especially where administrative matters are concerned (Lucas and Baroudi 9–23). Enhanced reach of managers over a larger number of work groups has improved managerial efficiency by many folds. Automation of manufacturing processes has led to production automation, as is evident from financial industry (Lucas and Baroudi 9–23). Electronic linking has resulted in better interaction between the manufacturer, supplier and the customers (Venkatesh and Vitalari 1687-1706). Electronic linking has removed the geographical boundaries between the various work groups with in the organization and between the organization and the external environment. Now work groups can be easily formed and coordinate to achieve the ends. Electronic data interchange (EDI) between the manufacturer and the supplier has strengthened their integration, thereby involving the supplier in the organization’s manufacturing process.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Traditional organizational structures require being flexible and adapting to the new technology that offers expeditious interaction via quality information sharing. The environmental damage was unprecedented, and initial public outrage against Exxon was at very high levels, however Exxon Mobil succeeded in weathering the storm and continue to do business, mainly because of the efforts of its own earth sciences employees.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The problems all began on March 24, 1989 at four minutes after midnight, when the very big oil super tanker Exxon Valdez struck a reef hidden under the pristine surface of Alaska’s amazing Prince William Sound and began spilling vast amounts of crude oil into the sea. In the Alaskan darkness that spring night an environmental nightmare began that changed not only Prince William Sound itself, but the whole world, especially the business world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the first weeks after the disaster, upon the advice of their own earth sciences people, who understood all too well how much environmental damage might ensue, Exxon volunteered to spend whateverall the money was necessary on cleanup activities and assessments of environmental damages after the accident and before the settlement. Over 2 billion dollars was quickly spent by Exxon on these efforts, and the corporation’s PR people used every opportunity to publicize the amount being spent, and to repeatedly mention that it was voluntary, so everyone would be aware of that fact and appreciate that Exxon was meeting its responsibilities to the public for the damage done to the environment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although all the efforts, nothing could stop the flood of lawsuits which resulted from the spill. After anightmarish 30 months of devastating negative publicity for Exxon, and extremely serious financial losses, a legal settlement agreement was finally reached on October 8, 1991 between the plaintiffs—the State of Alaska and the federal government—and Exxonattorneys on both criminal charges and civil damage claims stemming from the incident.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In settlement of civil charges, Exxonagreed to pay the State of Alaska and the United States over 900K Million USD over a 10 year period. This money would be used for environmental and wildlife restoration and would be administered by 6 government trustees; three of them federal appointees, and the other three state appointees.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In settlement of criminal charges, it was agreed that Exxon would pay a fine of 250 million dollars. Two restitution funds of fifty million dollars each were found, one under state control and one under federal authority. Against strong opposition from many Alaskans, one-hundred and 25 million dollars of the balance was forgiven due to Exxon’s cooperation during the cleanup, and because of the upgraded and highly-publicized safety procedures Exxon earth sciences department had designed to prevent a reoccurrence. The remaining 50 million dollars was divided between the Victims of Crime Act account and the North American Wetlands Conservation Fund.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But another enormous setback was in store for Exxon. On September 16, 1994, an angry jury in a United States Federal courtroom returned a stunning 5 billion dollar punitive damages verdict against the corporation. Exxon attorneys have fought this judgment in appeal after lengthy appeal over the last seven years, and on November 7, 2001 won a major victory when United States Court of Appeals justices threw out the 1994 punitive damages verdict.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But Exxon has suffered mightily since the Exxon Valdez went aground in Prince William Sound that fateful night in 1989, and it is not an exaggeration to say that the existence of the corporation has been at stake. Any business, no matter how large or small, is at the mercy of public approval, for it needs public approval to sell its product.
