Back Injury Prevention Goes A Long Way

Back injury is one the most common injuries in the workplace. Back injuries can occur in the office setting, construction sites, and in manufacturing facilities. The injury is easy to prevent; a little guidance is all that is needed. It is easier to avoid the injury than trying to recover from the injury.

The first step to have strong back and stomach muscles; it is important in order to ease the work your back is put through each day. By doing simple back-toning exercises, you not only strengthen your back but also reduce stress; you will also improve your appearance. Check with your doctor as to the best exercises for you.

Excess weight exerts extra force on the back and stomach muscles. Your back tries to support the extra weight and causes excess strain on the lower back muscles. By losing weight
, you can reduce strain and pain in your back. Check with your doctor for the most sensible diet plan for you.

By learning to stand tall with your head up and shoulders back, you can prevent many back pains. This relearning process can be carried over to learning to sit and lift items correctly. When you sit down, don’t slouch. Slouching makes the back ligaments, not the muscles, stretch and hurt, thus putting pressure on the vertebrae. The best way to sit is straight, with your back against the back of the chair with your feet flat on the floor and your knees slightly higher than your hips.

The way you sleep can also affect your back. Pick a firm mattress or place plywood between your box springs and mattress for good back support. If your mattress is too soft it could result in a back sprain. Sleep on your side with your knees bent or on your back with a pillow under your knees for support.

Driving can also affect your back. Drive with your back straight against the seat and close enough to the wheel so your knees are bent and are slightly higher than your hips.

Lifting items is usually where the injury occurs. The factors above can be contributing to the obvious injury. Lifting objects is often a mindless task, and unfortunately many people perform their lift incorrectly, resulting in unnecessary strain on their back and surrounding muscles. In order to lift correctly and reduce strain on your back, it’s important to plan your lift in advance. This means to think about the weight of the object you will be moving and the distance you will be moving it. Take a few seconds and consider the item. Consideration for the item should include: bulkiness, weight, help required, distance to move, and area is clear for the movement.

If all considerations have been made, it is important to align yourself correctly in front of the load with your feet straddling the load, one foot slightly in front of the other for balance. Slowly squat down by bending your knees, not your back and stomach. Using both hands, firmly grab the load and bring it as close to your body as you can. This will help distribute the weight of the load over your feet and make the move easier.

Once the load is close to your body, slowly straighten out your legs until you are standing upright. Make sure the load isn’t blocking your vision as you begin to walk. If you need to turn to the side, turn by moving your feet around and not by twisting at your stomach.

If the load is too heavy, bulky, or awkward for you to lift alone, find someone to help you carry it. If no one is available, try to break down the load into easier parts. Use of a dolly or hand truck may also help move the item.

Remember injuries from improperly lifting items can take years to heal. Learning to carry items and even yourself correctly, will lead to a healthy back.

Turban, King, Viehland, and Lee (2006) define e-business as conducting business using computer networks to accomplish activities throughout the value chain, which may include dealing with customers, suppliers or other external business partners as well as streamlining internal functions electronically. The use of the internet in the global economy accounts for transactions worth trillions of dollars each year (Turban, et al., 2006). There is little doubt that technology has changed and is continuing to change the way in which businesses operate. However, as technology expands the availability of options, the need to integrate business functions throughout the value chain becomes more visible (Cardoso, Bostrom, & Sheth, 2003). Gosain, Malhotra, Sawy (2005) have recognized that although most business people are quick to talk about the need for integration and collaboration via electronic networks, the direction for proceeding beyond the talk often remains elusive. The additional options available for conducting business and connecting with people have the potential to support the very silos that e-systems were expected to tear down.

In response to this threat, many organizations have purchased comprehensive software called Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications (Cardoso, Bostrom, & Sheth, 2003) or have adopted strategies to re-evaluate their activities, commonly referred to as Business Process Reengineering (BPR) (Aalst, 2003; Attaran, 2000; Attaran and Wood, 1999; Li, Macquire, & Yao, 2003). ERP systems are designed to integrate all business functions and information within one computer database while the business processes provide the flowing structure of activities and interactions among the workers that connect all of the departments creating a cohesive, efficient whole. Many organizations have tried to increase efficiency and profitability by reengineering their business processes (Attaran, 2000; Attaran and Wood, 1999; Li, Macquire, & Yao, 2003). However, Attaran (2000) cites Hall et al. (2003) as finding that a majority of BPR initiatives resulted in less than 5% improvement. Attaran further cites Hammer and Champy (1993) as stating that between 50% and 70% of all BPR efforts do not achieve their goals. ERP software providers, in their own quest to remain competitive, have developed additional tools for their programs to assist organizations with establishing efficient business processes and participating in e-Commerce (Cardoso et al, 2003). These tools are called Workflow Management Systems.

Turban, King, Viehland, and Lee (2006) defines workflow management as, “The automation of workflows, so that documents, information, and tasks are passed from one participant to the next in the steps of an organization’s business process” (pg. 311). Mohan (n.d,) has cited the Giga Group definition for workflow as “the operational aspects of the business process – the sequence of tasks and who performs them, the information flow to the support tasks, and the tracking and reporting mechanisms that measure and control them” (pg. 1). With the appropriate direction, the WMS has the potential to become a knowledge management system by offering the links of various functional department knowledge and activities to other departments in the organization that can utilize the knowledge in useful ways. The system is also internet-enabled to include functionality for expanding communication to external business partners and suppliers in the value chain.

These value orientations can be related to effective management practices in different locations. The following suggestions illustrate how these orientations may be related to management. In a society that believes humans are subjugated by nature, planning would be futile, because the future is preordained. In a society that is present-oriented, rewards would be closely tied to current performance. In a society that believes in the basic goodness of human beings, participative management is likely to be the normal approach. In a society that is primarily being-oriented, decisions are likely to be intuitive with less concern for logic. In a society that is hierarchical, organization structures are likely to reflect this in formal, authority-based hierarchy.

The value survey model (VSM), introduced by Hofstede (1980), has been widely discussed in International management literature, and it appears to provide information of relevance from a managerial point of view. The model proposed 4 dimensions of culture, and a fifth dimension was later added based on research in the Far East (Chinese Culture Connection, 1987). The five dimensions are as follows.

Individualism (IDV) is the degree to which individual decision making and action are accepted and encouraged by the society. Where IDV is high, the society emphasizes the role of the individual; where IDV is low, the society emphasizes the role of the group. This was explained by Triandis (1972).

Uncertainty avoidance index (UAI) is the degree to which a society is willing to accept and deal with uncertainty. Where UAI is high, the society is concerned with certainty and security, and seeks to reduce uncertainty; where UAI is low, the society is comfortable with a high degree of uncertainty and is open to the unknown.

Power distance index (PDI) is the degree to which power differences are accepted and sanctioned by a society. Where PDI is high, the society believes that there should be a well defined hierarchy in which everyone has a rightful place; where PDI is low, the prevalent belief is that all people should have equal rights and the opportunity to change their position in the society.

Masculinity (MAS) is the degree to which traditional male values are important to a society. Traditional male values incorporate assertiveness, performance, ambition, achievement and material possessions, while traditional female values focus on the quality of life, the environment, the nurturing and concern for the less fortunate. In societies that are high of MAS, sex roles are clearly differentiated and men are dominant; If MAS is low, sex roles are more fluid
Confucian Dynamism (CD) is a complex dimension based on beliefs of the Chinese philosopher, Confucius. The dimension incorporates ideas of time and activity. Here, for simplicity, CD is defined as a time orientation only – taking a long term or short term view. A society that is high on CD has a long time horizon and looks to the future. A society which is low on CD has a shorter time horizon and is more concerned with events in the present and immediate future.

Hofstede reports scores from 1 to 100 for each country in his sample. The scores reported by Hofstede are based on employees within one organization, a large U.S. multinational company. Certain types of individuals are attracted to such an organization, and this is reflected in these scores. These scores should not, therefore, be interpreted as an accurate description of the national culture as a whole; rather, they should be seen as an indication of the similarities and differences that one might expect to find among employees in this type of organization in different countries.

In addition, these scores represent a central tendency in a particular population, but there is likely to be a wide array of values in any country; organizations and industries will attract and retain individuals with value systems that fit into the organizational culture. For example, a study of fast food restaurant managers in Canada and the United States revealed a very low level of individualism combined with no uncertainty avoidance and high power distance and masculinity (Punnett & Withane, 1990). This is quite dissimilar from the Canadian and U.S. value profile presented by Hofstede; but it appears to match the needs of an industry where people must work in close coordination, where there is little job security, and where there are clear distinctions of power and a great deal of competition.

An organization can be defined as a collection or grouping of humans working in coordination with each other without breaking link with the external environment (Weick, K). Classically, the structure of an organization addresses the issues of breaking down of a task into sub-tasks, allotment of teams to sub-tasks, coordination among the teams and exercising supervision These issues can be handled in a number of ways (Mintzberg, H).

The organizational structure has a close dependence on the type and strength of teams, goals of the organization and the technology used. The guiding parameters for an organization’s structural design are the number of management levels, level of delegation, staffing, reporting, linking and control mechanisms (Nadler and Tushman). We will focus our discussion on the dependence of organizational structures on Information Technology.

Information Technology has a telling effect on all the design parameters of classical organizational structure. Physical proximity of the task groups is no longer a requirement for the purpose of supervision. Other design parameters like, linking and control mechanisms have been automated (Rockart and Short 189-219). Information Technology has led to enhanced mission effectiveness through thoughtful adaptation of organizational structures. Multi-layered managerial tasks, as existent in classical organizations, have been thinned owing to electronic mailing, especially where administrative matters are concerned (Lucas and Baroudi 9–23). Enhanced reach of managers over a larger number of work groups has improved managerial efficiency by many folds. Automation of manufacturing processes has led to production automation, as is evident from financial industry (Lucas and Baroudi 9–23). Electronic linking has resulted in better interaction between the manufacturer, supplier and the customers (Venkatesh and Vitalari 1687-1706). Electronic linking has removed the geographical boundaries between the various work groups with in the organization and between the organization and the external environment. Now work groups can be easily formed and coordinate to achieve the ends. Electronic data interchange (EDI) between the manufacturer and the supplier has strengthened their integration, thereby involving the supplier in the organization’s manufacturing process.

Traditional organizational structures require being flexible and adapting to the new technology that offers expeditious interaction via quality information sharing. Thus the organizations should organize to derive optimum benefit from Information Technology.

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill and Consequences

Over 2 billion dollars was quickly spent by Exxon on these efforts, and the corporation’s PR people used every opportunity to publicize the amount being spent, and to repeatedly mention that it was voluntary, so everyone would be aware of that fact and appreciate that Exxon was meeting its responsibilities to the public for the damage done to the environment.

Although all the efforts, nothing could stop the flood of lawsuits which resulted from the spill. After anightmarish 30 months of devastating negative publicity for Exxon, and extremely serious financial losses, a legal settlement agreement was finally reached on October 8, 1991 between the plaintiffs—the State of Alaska and the federal government—and Exxonattorneys on both criminal charges and civil damage claims stemming from the incident.

In settlement of civil charges, Exxonagreed to pay the State of Alaska and the United States over 900K Million USD over a 10 year period. This money would be used for environmental and wildlife restoration and would be administered by 6 government trustees; three of them federal appointees, and the other three state appointees.

In settlement of criminal charges, it was agreed that Exxon would pay a fine of 250 million dollars. Two restitution funds of fifty million dollars each were found, one under state control and one under federal authority. Against strong opposition from many Alaskans, one-hundred and 25 million dollars of the balance was forgiven due to Exxon’s cooperation during the cleanup, and because of the upgraded and highly-publicized safety procedures Exxon earth sciences department had designed to prevent a reoccurrence. The remaining 50 million dollars was divided between the Victims of Crime Act account and the North American Wetlands Conservation Fund.

But another enormous setback was in store for Exxon. On September 16, 1994, an angry jury in a United States Federal courtroom returned a stunning 5 billion dollar punitive damages verdict against the corporation. Exxon attorneys have fought this judgment in appeal after lengthy appeal over the last seven years, and on November 7, 2001 won a major victory when United States Court of Appeals justices threw out the 1994 punitive damages verdict.

But Exxon has suffered mightily since the Exxon Valdez went aground in Prince William Sound that fateful night in 1989, and it is not an exaggeration to say that the existence of the corporation has been at stake. Any business, no matter how large or small, is at the mercy of public approval, for it needs public approval to sell its product. And in Exxon’s case, public approval has been very much dependent upon what the corporation’s earth sciences people have been able to say and do to persuade the public that the environmental damage done is nowhere close to being as damaging as other earth scientists have claimed.

In the twelve years since the oil spill, Exxon has relied heavily upon their own earth sciences personnel, and hired outside earth sciences experts in order to defend themselves against charges which they are liable for billions of dollars in environmental damage to the ecosystem of Prince William Sound.
