A Visit to the Helmet Dr.

Today was yet another trip to the "helmet Dr." for Paul. This time, not only was his head measured to see any growth but a scan was taken as well. Here are some pics.

The Bullygrrl's have been busy! Very busy. We have so many projects going at the same time we are a bit frazzled - we are moving forward though and quickly!

This weekend for the 4th of July we are going out to an MX track near Golden Acorn Casino. Simple as it sounds there is plenty to do to get us all out there with all our gear, bikes, and necessities.

Yesterday was a grand search for free firewood on Craigslist.com. There were a handful of people offering wood but were either unavailable to talk to, or the wood had already been picked up and taken away. :( It was a long hard search but by 5 p.m. we got what we were looking for.

This is the wagon the gentleman helping us allowed us to use to load up the wood.

+ = My life right now. My little house was picked up by a craft tornado. There are glass rocks, glue guns, frames, paint, foam brushes, glass bottles, flowers, shells and other various craft supplies everywhere. There are some big projects afoot and I can't wait to share. So as not to ruin the magic, I wont go into details yet. BUT when the time comes there will be blogs and pictures a plenty.

The Circus is Back in Town!

It was a pretty mild Saturday. Started out great though. When I got to checking email I received a message that I had been featured in a blog. YAY! I love it. I hope to do some features as well in the near future.

In the afternoon J took the dirt bike for a spin with friends and I caught up with a good friend. It had been so long since I had seen her she hardly recognized my child. He has grown a lot in 3 months.

Last night we had another first! As I was feeding Paul dinner I checked for budding teeth and WE HAVE ONE!! It was a happysadheisgrowingupfast type of feeling.

Before heading back to my house I stopped at Walmart to pick up more Infants Tylenol, Baby Orajel, and teething toys. I can tell when the poor guy is in pain and it breaks my heart.

While at Walmart I went down the cookie isle. Just to look. Seriously.

I came across the only thing thats even close to Circus Animal Cookies:

In my opinion, they are no bueno.

I have to tell you that my favorite cookies ever (that my mom never let me have and now that I am an adult buy whenever I want) are Mothers Circus Animal Cookies.

About a year ago they went out of business and stopped making said cookies. Luckily on my 24th birthday I had the pink rhino tattooed on my right shoulder. I was sure I had a piece of history on me. I kept trying to think of how to explain it to Paul when he's older.

Now I can tell him that its a cookie and then go and get some because, get this, THEY'RE BACK!!I am not sure when they will be released from the vaults, but I will be right there with a big glass of milk.

Motocross anyone?

To that I say YES!PLEASE!

Ever since the days of 4 channels and rabbit ears (this is a few decades) I have loved watching motocross on t.v. On the weekends I got the choice of either political talk shows or some sort of outdoor racing event. I always chose the racing and I learned to love it all.

This past Saturday I went to my first live motocross event. Truthfully, I didn't care what it was - just that it was motocross, outdoors and it was said to be amazing was good enough for me. I had no idea I was about to watch the Super Bowl equivalent in motocros - The AMA Pro Motocross Championship.

Our morning started SUPER early with a call from a friend asking if we were/could be ready to go soon. This was at 6:10 am. I don't know about you, but I am not the fastest mover in the morning especially with 4 dogs and a baby. We hurried and an hour later we hit the road (with a few stops of course).

It always amazes me how close everything in San Diego is. It seemed like nothing getting to the Glen Helen Raceway.

We started to get an idea of what we were about to see when we caught a glimpse of a very tall hill that was part of the track the races were going to take place on.

We parked along the opening gates to the raceway, but not in the parking lot nearest the blue balloon. The blue balloon was where the ticket sales were that would accept plastic. This was the beginning of mine and J's motocross championship adventure. We separated from the group we were in and walked alongside the main parking lot, then through it, then back up it. This was the first major walk of the day.

We eventually got our pretty blue wristbands and started off. Originally the thought was to meet up with the people we had come with and had to separate from. Not knowing the raceway we wandered a little aimlessly without finding anyone.

While wandering however, we did manage to find the Speed TV anchors podium.

I took this picture right before we walked behind them. Of course, not to miss out on a moment, I turned and flashed my pearly whites at the camera. And No I did not make it on any of the anchors coverage. My friends backsides as they were walking past did however.

We walked through the entire raceway - not finding anyone for 45 min. Along the way we stopped at a few of the vendors booths. We purchased an FMF umbrella and these bad boys. This was our major deal of the day. These riding boots are normally $275+. They are the mens F3 Fox Boot and exactly what I wanted. J had promised to buy me riding boots for my birthday and we couldn't pass up the deal. I have smaller feet and it happened that the mens size 8 boots were on sale for $85.

This is Kourtney. The other bullygrrl. The picture was taken before the both of us were devoured by the sun. I am still recovering and it has been 6 days.

Here are a few pics to get an idea of what we we were watching.

Our approach to the event was to switch places in the track throughout the race. I noticed that some people picked a post and sat there the entire day. I think we were all to excited to sit still so we got to see a lot of different race perspectives.

This day did not pass without us being front and center witnesses to a crash.

This is a picture I caught right before the crash happened. If you look at the rider in the blue jersey, now look at his front tire. I think it might even show what caused the crash - that tire colliding with the one in front of it. This sent Star Racing rider Michael Hall #164 tumbling through the air.

The flags came out and the 250 racers had to re-start. In the end I think all that happened to Michael Hall was a couple of fractured bones in his hand. He is very lucky as it could have been much worse.

Throughout the day a few dogs kept catching our eye (and our hearts. We <3 all dogs)

We first saw this dog when we were entering the raceway. At first we thought it was cute that it was decked out in moto gear. However, as the day grew longer and longer, this long haired trooper of a dog was still walking around with a helmet, goggles, neckbrace and a jersey.

Everyone should know how much I love Pits. I adore them. I own 2 and I have plenty of friends that own them. Even still I am (as you should be) always cautious when meeting one for the first time. This one was a sweetheart. Not an ugly bone in his body. He was very calm and relaxed the entire time. Never once did he seem out of sorts or intolerant. As we were leaving J talked to this dogs owner and it turned out that he was a breeder. Go figure!

All total I took over 700 pictures at this event. I have created a new Bullygrrl brand that is specifically related to motocross.

This morning as I was catching up on twitter, through @cameron_crazy I came across the blog for April Rose. Today is her due date and Dr's are surprised she has made it this long. Already a survivor this story touched my heart and I decided to find something pink to dress my son in to show our love and support.

He is such a gem and has really made me appreciate life like never before.

Earlier today I was looking at videos I have taken as I am going to put together a montage of my very rambunctious pups. I came across a bunch of Paul as a wee lil bit and found a few I had to share. I wanted to see how he would react to certain music as well as his first little sighing sing-song like noise ever. Too precious. Enjoy!

I feel like most of this day was taken up by my unruly computer taking several dumps on me and then taking an extra long time getting cleaned back up. Nevertheless he seems to be running better. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

Other then being a momma, doing chores, and tending to animals, I also had time to list my first batch of note cards. Nothing too fancy. Simple and great for any size note to any sort of person.

As I have written in another post, my son Paul has an orthotic helmet he needs to wear for at least 5 months. As of right now it is a plain dark blue helmet w/ one lighter blue snake skin print strap on the side.

As a family we are very into extreme sports. We constantly are on the lookout for new daredevil motocross footage dvd's and have the Fuel network on (A LOT)!! We go to the desert plenty and hopefully sometime soon I will be able to start work on transitioning from quad riding to dirt bike riding. I haven't really done very much riding at all but the little I did was enough to get me hooked.

Paul's helmet is one of those things that as a parent you want to keep forever and ever. I figure it will be one of many helmets in his lifetime so why not start it out right and cover it with badass stickers. The problem is I have a few, but not many. I really dont even know where to begin looking.

So my thought was, why not throw it out to the people of twitter and @tonyhawk. If you have any stickers that could make my son's helmet that much more wicked looking I would be SO grateful.

If there is a chance that you or someone you know may have something to contribute let me know at @bullygrrl_art.

Of course I will consider special placement on the helmet and will take a load of pictures as the project progresses.

I have vivid memories of my mom and aunt dragging us children from store to store every time they got together. This happened every few months, so it was a semi-regular thing. Of all the places we went Chinatown was my fondest. Well maybe not the streets of Chinatown where my chubby cheeks were pinched for good luck and @twinkiechan's head was the perfect height for the bottom of ladies purses to hit. The stores were my favorite. Everything about them: the assortment of colorful foreign objects, food, spices and yes even the smell. (If you haven't been to one, the smell can only be described as fishyspicyherbysweetnsour.)

So, knowing I had an appointment with Paul's Orthotist, I left the house and hour or so early and to go shop at one of the largest Asian supermarkets I know of. Ranch 99.

Outside the towering opening to the building is this killer koi fountain.

Sort of like how the mall is setup, there are some sub stores within the supermarket. At this store there are two restaurants that made the entryway smell amazing.

It was interesting to see Paul's reaction to the new environment. It wasn't much but the live fish did make him little excited. I couldn't expect much, he is only 5 months old. Next year at this time it will be such a different experience.

As we went up and down the isles I took pics of the things that particularly caught my eye.

This pretty jar is full of ground fish... who would have thought?

This is the prettiest beef jerky packaging I have ever seen.

This was taken for @twinkiechan. I haven't had this in forever! What is the difference in the two?

I liked the look of this a lot, and would have bought it if I wasn't scarily allergic to squid!

How crazy is this? Sort of makes me sad. Not like I could free them or anything. I usually try not to make eye contact but I couldn't pass up the shot.

I love the color green. Even in the form of steamed layered tapioca cake.

Helmet.

The long wait for Paul's helmet is over. Now before I share pictures and you get lost in his cuteness, let me tell you what a trooper my son has been. No joke, there has been no crying or fussyness. He did give me a look like "What the hell are you letting this lady put on my head!" but that went away and he was fine. The process is very straight forward. 23 hours a day. 1 hour to wash baby and the inside of helmet and then time to let the two dry and air out. As of right now the pictures are of Paul's helmet as was received from the Dr. Of course I can't just let it sit around and not become a craft project. Joe and I have big plans. More to come on that as it happens :) Enjoy these pics of Paul's first experiences with his helmet.

**This was a pretty mellow yet productive week. Many things to share and update on. I have yet to organize my time better so this is an update of the entire week. In the future I will be updating on a regular basis.**

The week started out on an awesome note. Tuesday was the follow up appt. for Paul's cranial remolding orthosis (helmet). The Dr. took another scan of his head to see what change had been made if any at all. The changes were positive in that the flat spot is not so anymore but his head is growing wide rather then long. He def. needs a helmet.

Thanks to Medi-cal, we were able to finalize the deal. Measurements and pics were taken and we go back next Thursday to pick it up.

This is the head sock they put on before they scan it. He is such a good sport. No fussyness or crying he was happy the whole time. At the end I got to pick out the color/design of the helmet. I had 20 or so designs to choose from but in the end I went with plain dark blue and blue snake skin print straps. Joe and I plan on decorating the helmet w/ motocross stickers. Its going to be wonderful!

We all know "don't judge a book by it's cover" right? But what does it really mean. Someone twittered this yesterday and it brought me to tears. 4 Month Dr Visit.

So... I just came back from my son's 4 month checkup. We were 5 min early and still had to wait 30 min. Then after he was weighed and measured (18.5 lbs 27 in) we waited for another 30 min. The Dr came in and chit chatted about my sons progress. She asked me how much he ate and I told her and she seemed to think that he was eating way too much and there could be no way he'd eat as much as I said. My son is very healthy and in the 90th percentile for weight and length. She then told me about her children and how her daughter literally eats half of what my son does.If my son was 4 month old clothing eating as much as she does then I would be concerned, but he's not. He is 4 months old wearing 9-12 month clothing. You do the math.

Then he got his 2nd round of shots. He started crying when they Dr gave him the liquid he had to drink because he is congested a little and he was laying flat on his back. So I held his hands through the next 4 shots - 2 on either leg. He screamed so loud I think my ear drum rattled. He fell asleep on the way home and is still knocked out. Poor guy.

When I was little I wanted to be an Archaeologist.. later a Marine Biologist. I also wished for world peace at Christmas. As I grew older and explored other career possibilities, I decided that it was a creative arty life I wanted to live while still helping others and the environment.

I am just entering a time in my life where I can put some real focus on the causes that matter to me. I would hope that my hard work would pay off by my friends, family and followers on various social networks, spreading my message and supporting the causes themselves.

Movie Excitement?

I really don't remember the last time I was truly excited to watch a movie. When I was little I would eagerly await Disney releases or anything that had to do with dinosaurs. Now movies are different, at least to me. Its hard for me to find a movie that I want to sit through in a theater when I could just as easily sit and watch at home. I love watching movies with the loud booming bass behind the couch and surround sound making me feel like arrows are whizzing past my ears.

All that said - I am STOKED for the Star Trek Movie and Where the Wild Things Are. Check out these previews. They are totally worth it.

Helmet Adventures cont.

So... my sons head is flat in the back and sort of growing into an oblong shape.

He is exactly 4 months old tomorrow. Our adventure began when he was 2.5 months old and we noticed him favoring one side of his head to sleep on. After bringing it up to his pediatrician she referred us to a specialist.

At our first appointment they took measurements of my sons head and scanned his face and head in this machine.

The Dr. showed me stretches for my sons neck muscles and suggested that he look to the left as much as possible and lay on the left most portion of his head as well.

So we went home and I did all the things she told me about.

3 weeks later = today: We went back for our follow up appointment. His head has grown and is a little less flat then it was before, but the Dr. wanted to see his head grow longer not wider and it didn't really do that. So when you take the good with the not so they cancel each other out and yes, he needs a helmet.

This is not my child, but this is the helmet. I have seen some different colors and patterns, so I am curious what choices we will have.

In art news:

* I gathered a bunch of cardboard for a frame project I'm working on.

* Organized Trapper Keeper <-- that is the exact one I have. I keep my art in it.

* and last, I made horrible attempts at trying to find scrap-booking shops in my area. I will have to save that for another more focused trip out and about.

So this is my behind the scenes look at my bullygrrl endeavor. It has taken me many years to find my artistic voice and I think I am just beginning to truly put together all my years dabbling with different mediums. I have always loved making collages - on that same note, I have always clipped cool pictures,words, & objects that stood out to me. The art I am creating is the bits and pieces from over the years organized into stories.
