I threw a fancy party last month. but didn't have my new camera yet. I've been having trouble uploading to ourmedia for this site lately, so now I'm trying a link to YouTube. I have the feeling this may just shoot you over to YouTube itself. In which case the video quality goes way down, even on my high speed connection. But let's give it a try shall we?

The Color Purple

Whereforeas so many of my shorts are grainy indoor shots, i decided to take my camera on a walk, determined to get something colorful up on this site.
The handheld shots were shaky so I chopped them up into this. There's mostly purple with some yellow in there for contrast. The camera seems to darken things quite a bit.

Found out that our local university's film festival will accept shorts in digital video only if they were originally shot on f-i-l-m. I spoke with them on the phone today. How embarrassing. The application form, which I have already burned, did say digital video, so I thought....

These birdies don't look like much on a tiny screen. Last month I showed this film (sorry I mean Video) downtown at the warehouse. The projector blew it up to 15' x 20' and it looked great. When it's on a large screen like that, you can see the individual birdies reacting to each other. I have to get down to the shore and film them some more. I mean video them.

So, behind the 8-ball as usual. I kept hearing a bit of a buzz about "carp caviar" as I surfed around the vlogosphere. But I figured it was a vlog site I hadn't run into yet and that people were just referring to their friends. Didn't realize there'd been a call for submissions. Anyhow, last night I discovered that carp caviar was a promotional contest that started on December 6th.
The entries are fabulous. You can find them at BottomUnion.com. I shot some quick footage, editted it this morning. Too bad the contest is over.
Note that I have my scarey spinster aesthetic well honed now.

New Year's Storm

This is about four and a half minutes of footage which I brought to our local news channel on the day of the big storm. The local news channel never ran it, even though I told them they could use it for free. I don't know why they didn't bother, it's a lot better than the footage they used. This was a "perfect storm," where our Bay filled with the combination of storm surge and super high tides (perihelion sun and syzygy for the moon) and then on top of that floodwater from local rivers. Yes, all at the same time.

The video's a bit large. I'm interested in seeing how long it takes to open and load. I've been experimenting with different compression settings, and tried to bring it down as much as possible. Hopefully the quality won't be horrible.

By the way, those good samaritans who, in the middle of the video, dislodge the coastguard vessel stuck under the boardwalk...they couldn't figure it out at first. I had to stop the camera for a few seconds and tell them how to get the boat free. So i proudly take some responsibility in that sequence of events. Not just capturing the scene, but helping make it happen. Yahoo!

It's been a while since my last post (friends having a house meeting).

Hurricane Katrina has just ravaged our Gulf coast, transforming The Big Easy into The Big Difficult, and leaving us in utter shock. Many of my friends, even as far north as we are up here, have already volunteered their houses for refugees and are still boarding buses to go down as part of the relief effort. I have heard recent commentary comparing the head of our current administration to Marie Antoinette. Seems quite apt.

This short video makes use of material borrowed from mainstream and non-mainstream sources. If anyone objects to this sampling, please write and I will do the research to credit the photographers. When originally cutting material, I included their names but while importing into imovie, the images were cropped by the program. I gave up. I figure since only two people have looked at this site, it won't really be a problem.

The First Post

Today is my 38th birthday. My housemates made me a fabulous "thick coffee" breakfast with french toast and fresh little strawberries. I trimmed the hedge, bought myself a small video camera, and taught myself how to post videos on the web. A very nice day, all in all.
