It didn’t take long to adapt my java knowledge into how the Android OS operates, and soon I found myself doing some simple developing. Now, I’ve published my first simple tool in the Android markets, which you can find by searching for “What is my remote IP”. The application is of course free, and offer a simple and efficient way of getting the remote IP address of your phone. Simply install it, and click the “Get IP” button, and it’ll display your remote IP.

You can also download the .APK file here:

I stumbled over this earlier today and thought it could be interresting to share. The idea itself is rather easy – get a trojan into someones computer and take eavesdropping to a new level. While earlier trojans mostly registered all your keyboard activity and logged everything you did, this trojan goes to the next step. It gives you the ability to eavesdrop on a skype conversation. This trojan also comes with complete source-code so you can easily check it yourself and compile it, in case you – as me – won’t trust a 3rd party executable which is, indeed, a trojan.

This is a -very- limited example on a web-service that can be deployed on a JBoss installation. But it has enough in it, for you to use as a framework and continue to build on. You’re only limited by your own thoughts.

After spending hours bug-tracking and head-banging to try to convert some web-services made for Tomcat to run on JBoss I finally figured out a solution. While you earlier on configured the webservices in various XML configuration files for both Tomcat and JBoss – in JBoss you no longer need that. Simply right-click the package structure you want to generate as a web-service, and select “export”. Export the package structure, as well as other packages/classes that the web-service require as a .jar file. Then simply drop that .jar file into your “deploy” directory and the web-service will automatically install itself.

You can verify your installation by pointing your browser to http://localhost:8080/jbossws/ – there you will be able to list all active web-services, and you will also see if it actually got deployed.

NOTE: Before you go insane as I did today – if you start getting all kinds of strange errors when trying to configure your web-service in JBoss, everything from DATETIME not supported, to xerces and sax conversion problems, then this is all most likely due to how JBoss expect you to configure your web-service. Do yourself a favor, and follow them easy steps above instead.

A couple of weeks ago I was given an invitation token to a new streaming service much similar to Spotify. This new service with the project name WIMP is also based on the same technical setup as Spotify, coded in AIR. The main difference however is that where Spotify will remain free, you need to pay to use WIMP. Why? They do not believe in a comercial based income model. Fair enough. My first impression when loading the client is that it’s far better looking and more organized than Spotify.

The client is easy to use, intuitive and the learning curve is pretty easy. You have a easy and quick-to-access search field to the upper-right, you have navigation buttons to the upper-left. The image above show how the welcome screen is setup and is the first thing you see when you log on. Here you find latest additions, both albums and songs. You have recommendations, playlists – and of course the top 10 albums/songs. Not to mention the player. Player itself is located to the bottom of the client, with album art, song information and of course a complete list of your current song queue. The search results is nicely organized into albums and songs, and you can quickly browse down to what you want to listen to.

One of the features I do like a lot, is the integration to Last.fm, as well as the quick and easy option to buy any song or album and have it directly delivered to your computer as a MP3 file. A service that works very good. You have a easy way to share playlists on facebook, and I suspect that by the time they open for the public, you will have even more sharing options. The client also show artist information, and together with intuitive functions like drag-and-drop functionality for creating playlists, this is starting to become quite a competor for Spotify. One thing that really makes this the best client for me, is their toll on artists that aren’t on Spotify – like Metallica. All in all, a great client, a great project – and I can’t wait for it to come out of beta stage. Oh, and if you read this Aspiro, feel free to expand my trial period.

So I stumbled over a post at Smashing Magazine of various Icons. One of them that I got interrested in was the Fortune 500 badge collection, but sadly the webpage that offered them had taken them down from downloads. I guess its mainly due to the traffic increasing that happens everytime Smashing Magazine links to your webpage. So I figured I’d be kind enough to publish these files here so that people can actually download and enjoy them. These badges were created by Javier.

Ok, let’s face it – quite a few of the visitors you have on your page most likely already have a Facebook account. Wouldn’t it then be nice to let them be able to comment on your page without needing to register there as well? With this nice little plugin you can. A few steps is required though, but once completed you will make life quite easier for any visitor you have that might want to comment. The good part is that once they have accepted your “application” once, the application will automatically recognize them if they are logged on to Facebook and visiting your page. A notification window will appear in the upper-right of your page, notifying them that they have been recognized. All comments written then will be tied with their name and picture taken from Facebook. So why should you be bothered? People often don’t comment since they don’t want to take the burden on going through more registrations, so make it easy for them.

Installation:

Download WP-Facebook Connect from Wordpress.

Unpack it and upload it to your /plugins directory – then activate it.

Then move to the settings tab of your wordpress installation.

You need to enter application public/secret key.

Follow the instructions in the settings tab for the plugin.

Tweak your comments.php file; and add the code below.

Now test it, you will most likely get nofified about wrong url.

Edit your “application” settings, and set url to your blog.

Voila, you are done!

Code adjustments:

You need to add the following piece of code: <?php do_action(’fbc_display_login_button’) ?> you might also want to do some other adjustments since when the users are logged in from Facebook, it could perhaps look like this: Logged in as . Log out. It doesn’t know the user since the user isn’t really part of your page. So you might want to do some adjustments for that, for instance check the $user_identity variable.
