If you are a graphic designer, illustrator or a photographer you probably don’t know how to code and you’ll be tempted to use a WordPress theme or a template. But why would you waste an incredible amount of time doing that? There are simple solutions out there that can be done really easy and you won’t have any headaches. One of these solutions is Dunked.

Dunked is an awesome solution for a portfolio

Like I previously said, for photographers, graphic designers, illustrators, package designers and other designers who don’t necessarily know how to code, this is a really good option for showcasing their beautiful work. In simple terms, Dunked is an online portfolio service for creatives.

At the moment, there is only one template that you can use, but that template can be customized easily to make your portfolio unique. There are two options of editing your portfolio.

You have the simple editing option where you can change the layout, colors and typography with the help of a selection of preset options that can create drastic changes without having to code anything.

The other option is using the advanced CSS editing where you can modify freely the CSS file and make it exactly the way you want it. This is perfect for those who know enough CSS to make the modifications they want.

Another cool thing that I like about Dunked is that their portfolio themes are responsive and ready for retina devices. Nowadays, everybody uses multiple devices to navigate on the web and most of your clients will look at your portfolio from a mobile device so it is important to have your site optimized for mobile. Also, a retina image looks better than a random one and it will make a better impression.

There’s even a simple method to use retina images in your portfolio on Dunked. On regular websites you would have to put a few more lines of code in the CSS and also upload two versions of an image, one for non retina devices and one twice the size for retina devices. On dunked, you just upload with the drag and drop option an image with a width/height of 420px if your thumbnails are 210px in width/height. Simple as that. The template does everything else for you.

This is something I tried to remedy with this script. When an error needs to be displayed, the script creates a div and positions it in the top right corner of the input. This way you don’t have to worry about your HTML form structure. The rounded corner and shadow are done with CSS3 and degrade well in non compliant browsers. There is no images needed.

However, things aren’t that simple. First of all, good and profitable apps tend to have good websites. Secondly, having a device screenshot is not that bad, in fact it is quite necessary. Putting things in perspective for the buyer is a good thing. An interesting trend that looks really nice is putting a slideshow on the device’s screen, instead of a static image.

A detailed description of what the app does should be the most important feature that is on an app’s website. If you want the visitor to be a client, you must let him know everything about the app so that he will know if he needs it or not.

The download buttons are again a must for these websites. After all, the purpose of the presentation is to make the client download the app. Popular apps tend to have download buttons for both marketplaces, but this is not the case on every app website, because most apps are made just for one platform.

Having a unique design for your app’s website is a must in my opinion. Spelltower’s website is a good example of what an app’s website should look like. It is unique, descriptive, designed with style and it offers what you would have expected from a site like this.

I didn’t see everyone doing this, but it is an important factor that you must take into account. Social media integration or just adding social media accounts for the app website is a must. The better way is integrating the app into social media accounts. This way you are sure that you keep your customers connected.
