If you are a parent you have goals for your child. They may be growth and developmental goals, academic goals, and maturity goals. As parents we want the best for our children. Now we must teach our children how to want the best for themselves by teaching them how to set goals!

Teaching your child how to set goals will be fun for the whole family! In fact after you help your child set their goals you can begin clearly setting your own, which will have a huge impact on you reaching them faster.

Here’s how you start… First, Define a Goal. I like to use this definition; a goal is a planed destination, a desired result, or in kids’ language, something that you want. Goals help us stay on track, they give us reasons to do our very best. Once your child understands what goals are, they can begin to set goals in three areas; Academic, maturity, and athletic.

It’s effective for a child to set yearly goals and review them each month to measure how far they’ve come. What if they don’t reach their goal? Extend the deadline, that’s all.

Let’s get back to setting them.. On a clean sheet of paper have your child write the three categories at the top. Then under each category they will write as many goals as they can think of. Here’s one example “I graduated the fourth grade with honors, June, 2012.” This would be an example of an academic goal. Notice that we put the goal in the first person, present tense, and we state the goal as if it were already complete. It’s very important that you follow this procedure, by doing so your child’s goal will become part of their subconscious mind. Make sure your child re-writes their goals monthly. You can begin your own list of goals and review them monthly as well.

By having your child do this exercise each month you will be doing them a huge favor! It will take discipline on your part, but if you can follow through and stay with it you will give your child an edge.

At The Appalachian Karate Academy Atlanta we use Black Belt as a long term goal that each child will set for themselves. By setting this goal children learn the importance of tenacity and follow through in any activity. I want to leave you this week with our “Black belt success Cycle’ Know what you want, have a plan, take consistent action, review your progress and renew your goals.

If you are an addict for ‘As-Seen-On-TV’ infomercials and HSN shopping gadgetry, this series is for you.

If you have a review on any product or service, complete with photos, a short description, and rating from 1-5 Bulls… send it to editor@boldspicynews.com .

The Dilemma: We needed to move two large cabinets filled with china and crystal. We did not want to take hours carefully unloading, stacking, breaking down, and rebuilding these decorative furniture pieces just to find out we preferred them in their original locations.

The Solution: EZMOVES. The solution that is shown on TV that can move a car across carpet by one man with just a little set-up. We found ours for just $10.00 in the local Home Depot.

We started with our Dining Nook that became overcrowded with one too many decorative storage furnishings. This little area was never meant for such formality so we decided to move the Crystal Cocktail Wine Sidebar to another location and change the china cabinet to the alternate wall.

The carpet and wood-floor-safe pads are simple set up.

The strong lever bar with adjusting wheel fulcrum was a little awkward at first and finding somewhere safe to place it on the furniture without snapping their bases was slightly stressful.

Once the pads were in place moving the cabinets, full with hundreds of pounds of dining sets, was absurdly easy. It hovered smoothly into place with not one broken item including my back.

The Review: This $10 solution saved us hours of time. Originally I was going to rate this only 3 Bulls due to the difficulty and safety of using the lever. Though I realize that we may have used this product for extremely heavy and fragile furnishings that may be at the ultimate spectrum of safety. We would not recommend using it the way we did without two or more helpers for safety. For moving any other solidly built furniture with strong base areas we give this product 4 out of 5 bulls!

On Friday, June 8 at 8pm, Peter and Kate Pearce are hosting an Evening with Elvis featuring the Bradley Cole Smith Band benefitting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) at Tavern 99 in Buckhead. It’s an event not to be missed, and anyone contributing $250 or more to the campaign will receive complimentary admission to the show.

Leukemia has had a tremendous impact on Peter and his family as he lost his Mom, Tina, to the disease in 2001, his Grandfather Buddy as a young child, and most recently his Uncle Mark in 2010. As a family member dealing with the illness of a loved one, the overwhelming emotion you feel is a sense of helplessness. However, there is a way that you can help, and offer hope to those dealing with these diseases.

Peter was recently nominated as a candidate for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s 2012 Man of The Year. Peter is honored to help lead this fundraising campaign to support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) in its efforts to find a cure for blood cancers and to assist patients and families as they battle this disease. Peter and Kate’s efforts, along with your help, will support the discovery of blood cancer therapies and fund research to find cures. Please “Be A Hero” and support LLS by making a donation to this fundraising campaign. Every dollar raised counts as one vote and the candidate who gets the most votes and raises the most money is named the local Man or Woman of the Year.

Since 1949 the survival rate for many blood cancer patients has doubled or tripled and in some cases quadrupled. And many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are being tested in clinical trials for patients with a range of cancers including lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. Drugs like Gleevec, Sprycel, Arinza, Tasigna and Zolinza are now being tested for patients with other non-cancerous diseases like Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis. All donations are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. The LLS is a tremendous organization that has provided more than $800MM in research and patient support as well as assisted with patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.

WHEN: Friday, June 8, 2012 8:00pm until 11:00pm

Suzy McGrane was a local photographer who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her early twenties and ultimately lost her battle when the disease returned years later. What started as Save Our Suzy is now known as Share Our Suzy. The goal of SOS is to bridge the financial gap and allow breast cancer patients to focus solely on recovery and not the financial stress brought on during this very difficult battle. Funds raised cover the critical areas that insurance companies do not by providing assistance to those with daily needs such as wigs, prosthetics, childcare, gas cards, utility bill assistance, medication assistance and more. Share Our Suzy’s mission is to raise money and resources to assist and support breast cancer patients in South Carolina from diagnosis to remission.

What is self-discipline? Self-discipline has been defined as the ability to make yourself do what you know you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like or not! A disciplined person knows what has to be done and does it. They don’t put it off until latter or allow themselves to be easily taken off track. And, most importantly they prioritize and focus on being self-disciplined with activities that move them toward their goals. There’s a big difference between having self-discipline with tasks that don’t move you toward your goals and doing very well what need not be done at all. It’s usually the more challenging activities and tasks that will help you reach your goals than those of less importance. This concept is easily confused so be careful which activities you exercise your self-discipline in.

When teaching children self-discipline it is important to have fun and keep in mind that the idea is to establish routines that are followed for the entire week without deviation or distraction. We want our children to pick up after themselves, to clean their rooms without being told, to study and do their homework on their own, and to be responsible for their extra curricular programs as well. We demand a whole lot from them!

First explain to them that there are two kinds of discipline; Parent discipline- We constantly tell them what they need to do! And Self-discipline- They take care of certain things without reminders from us! Sometime just understanding that can point them in the right direction! Next list out all of their responsibilities that have to do with, school, home, extracurricular, and leisure time. Have a discussion about all their responsibilities in those areas. Then, with their input, teach them how to prioritize. In other words make sure they know that homework and studying are more important than chores. Remember the self-disciplined person does the more important goal-oriented activity first.

When your child understands what’s important by the goals you and him have set it will be easy to establish a comfortable routine for everyone to follow. Your routine should include all the activities on your list. The more regimented you child becomes and the more you and him plan time for every responsibility in order of importance the more discipline he will have. Just remember to stick to a fun routine so it becomes habit and your child wants to be self-disciplined.

ATLANTA, GA – (April 17, 2012). LifeLine Animal Project, a non-profit animal rescue and advocacy organization, will throw its biggest party of the year in downtown Atlanta on Thursday, May 17th from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Dogs are welcome guests and LifeLine encourages party goers to “dare to wear black!”, tying into the Lint Roller theme.

It’s a light-hearted party approach to raising awareness and support for the many serious issues that LifeLine tackles daily. Since 2002 LifeLine has worked tirelessly to end the euthanasia of healthy and treatable dogs and cats in area shelters, promote adoption and rescue and rehabilitate homeless pets who have nowhere else to turn. The non-profit operates two low-cost Spay & Neuter Clinics to serve other rescue groups and the public and have performed 50,000 spay/neuter surgeries to date. More than 130,000 dogs and cats will enter Atlanta area shelters in a year’s time, at a cost to the taxpayers of more than $15 million annually, LifeLine’s clinics are an affordable option and are vital to easing this burden.

“One of the reasons that we have been able to do all we’ve done for the community in the last decade is the funds raised from our Lint Roller parties, and we look forward to celebrating 10 years of success at this year’s gala,” says Blythe Randolph, who serves as LifeLine’s board chair, “We are particularly grateful to our co-chairs of the event, Patti Dickey and Amy Lance, for working so hard to help us and the pets of our guests celebrate LifeLine’s anniversary in such a fun way!”

The rescue group, still led by founding executive director Rebecca Guinn, also operates a no-kill shelter in Avondale Estates. Their Community LifeLine initiative goes deep into metro neighborhoods to serve pets and pet owners in need.
