A few years ago I read an article in the New York Times about a list of 36 questions that are bound to make any two people fall in love. Or perhaps more in love.

The article piqued my curiosity, so over drinks one night, I asked my husband these questions, and after being together for almost six years, we learned a few things about each other we didn't know.

Recently, the New York Times put the questions to the test with real couples who asked each other the questions, and their answers did not disappoint.

Throwback: Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky's Wedding

Since I am in full on wedding mode, I thought I'd throw it back to one of the most iconic TV weddings of my childhood, and arguably of all time: Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky's.

Like all truly good fashion, I'm sure it's only a matter of months – or perhaps weeks – before this look comes back in style. Speaking of which, can we take a moment to reflect on that veil?

In realness, I can't imagine our current minimalist society ever bringing back such an over-the-top trend, but if and when we do, I'll be ready. I've got my mom's dress that fits the bill.

How to Get Through the Month Before Your Wedding

Nine tips for surviving the month before your wedding without losing all your hair, and only most of your savings:

1. Mix four Xanaxes into a stock pot of vodka and drink every time a vendor springs an extra expense on you.

2. Hold your breath until you pass out to avoid all phone calls. Email, you peasants!

3. Take an ice bath to numb the crippling pain you experience every time you view your credit card statement.

4. Go on a juice cleanse, but replace the juice with Pepto-Bismol to not only ease your nervous stomach, but help you lose weight!

5. Take two Ambiens every four hours to ensure you get plenty of beauty rest leading up to your big day.

6. Throw away whitening strips and instead rinse your mouth with bleach! It's cheaper and far more potent than name brand products, and will still leave you with that beloved throbbing pain.

7. Get that $2,000, 24k gold, baby tear facial Martha Stewart Weddings was talking about, because at this point, what's another few grand?

8. Take care of yourself by eating healthy, balanced meals, like ice chips and raw kale, to ensure you have loads of energy and your dress still fits the day of!

9. Smile every time you think about your wedding, because remember, you could have put a down payment on a house!

Now that MTV has answered all our prayers by bringing back TRL, I thought I'd get nostalgic for a minute to remind all the youngins what the O.G. music matriarch of cable TV once was. This show paved the way for Carson Daly, it made photo booths cool, and once it even shut down Times Fucking Square when the Backstreet Boys showed up to release Black and Blue. They had to lower the shades, people!

Vintage Valentine's Day Ads

One of my favorite things to do is look at old ads and read the messaging on them because they really show a sign of the times. So I dug up some vintage Valentine's Day ads that are sure to make you say "W-T-F," because nothing says "Lollipop" like swinging in your underwear!

Life Updates N' Stuff

Oh my gosh, hey. It's been a while since I've blogged on here. TBT to my early twenties when this was bursting with awful dating stories I don't wish to rehash and passive aggressive letters to guys that broke my heart. YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID.

When I first started this blog, blogging was so cool. In fact, it was the shit. This was before Snapchat and Instagram, and now when I send a tweet about a new post, it gets totally loss in the abyss because Twitter has changed.

My very first post on here dates back to May of 2008, and no, do not look for it because it's God awful. But it's pretty awesome to look back on the posts I've shared, the contributions from you guys and the countless tears I've shed over lame dudes.

So, if you were wondering what I've been up to since the posts began to run dry, I've been working a full-time career in the marketing world as a copywriter... mostly for television. Working a lot leaves me little time to brain vomit on here after long work weeks because by the time the weekend hits, all I cant think about is sleep. My alcohol tolerance has dropped at a staggering rate, so instead of the usual handful of vodka tonics it used to take me to get white girl wasted, one glass of wine has me prank calling Costco to ask if they have a discount on coffins in no time.

I've hit the point in my life where I wish I wore more eye cream/sunscreen/lotion/full body coverups in my early twenties to prevent skin cancer, and ~~think~~ I see gray hairs all the time.

I'm also a mom now... to a corgi, and I've been in a serious relationship for almost five years. In fact, we recently we got engaged.

And that's it! I'd love to make a big statement about how I'll start blogging more on here, but come on. Let's be real. I'm not a stay-at-home corgi mom. I'm a working mom.

Deep Thoughts on Losing a Soul Mate

This is a blog post I've had saved in my drafts for a while because I didn't really know what to say about it, I just knew how it made me feel.

A few months ago I read an article about Celine Dion's husband who was dying from throat cancer. In the article, Celine detailed his illness and what was to come in his final days, but what struck me most was what he told her before he died: "Rene says to me, 'I want to die in your arms.'"

How's that for hitting you right in the feels?

This brought tears to my eyes then, and still does today, because reading that made me not only empathize for her, but it made me think hard about true love.

It made me realize true love is more than saying "I love you," it's recognizing you can't live without someone, and feeling heartbreak over the thought of not having that person wake up beside you, or laugh over the same stupid joke someday.

Watching your soul mate die in your arms has to be the biggest challenge life can hand you. Celine's a rock.

Relationships that Haunt Your Memories

Do you ever feel haunted by bad relationships in your past? Even if they weren't long relationships, even if you just dated for a few weeks, or one time, do you ever have painfully haunting memories that are brought on by the mere mention of that person's name? I do.

Let's bond.

I am haunted by someone I dated. And the sad part? It was years ago. I know. Stop judging. I feel bad enough.

CosmoGirl never taught me the right stuff. It was always: "Beauty Products That Drive Him Wild" or "Seven Different Ways to Get His Attention Between Classes...smiley face.” But what I really needed were some articles like "Reasons You Should Listen to Your Instincts About Someone Even If He's Cute and Charming Because He's Not Right For You (And Stop Checking Your Horoscope For Signs He is Right For You)."

So for years, no thanks to CosmoGirl, I've been rudely reminded of my inability to stop pursuing this person far past our expiration date. Like when I'm listening to music and some dumb song comes on that he told me to listen to because I’d "loooove it," I'm reminded. Or when I'm passed out on the couch covered in Doritos crumbs and awoken by a TV show he tried to get me to watch, I'm reminded again. It's fucking annoying.

Why am I so bothered, you ask? Because of what our "situation" became. Because even though I knew deep down he was so not right for me and that this thing, whatever it was, wasn’t going anywhere thanks to blatant signs, I wanted it to work.... because sometimes being a woman makes no logical sense.

So, like one of those girls in that He's Just Not Into You book, I continued to stick around. I know what you're thinking... but here's why: I liked the chase. When we met he was all up on this but I wanted nothing to do with him. Then the second I finally came to and had feelings, he was crushin' on another girl and I was not having it.

I also latched onto the memory of the beginning of our relationship: those first few euphoric, honeymoon-esque weeks you date someone. You know, when everything is all care-free and fun and you're exchanging letterman jackets? Meanwhile, I was ignoring pulsing questions in my mind like "did he just check out another girl in front of me?" and "Is it me, or is he kind of irresponsible?" and also, "the fact that he doesn't text me back for a day or so is kind of rude."

So it should be no shock that in the midst of all this, the not-so-unthinkable happened: he called it off (because it wasn't working, duh).

HOW DARE YOU, I thought. How dare you break things off before I do. How dare you break things off even though I didn't like you that much anyway because it seemed like you had no plan for your future...the nerve.

I knew someone had to pull the plug, but I just wanted to be the person to do it, obviously. I was equal parts pissed and heartbroken. And because I didn't pull the plug when I should have, I'm now haunted by my own doing, or lack of doing I guess, and am left with the memories of how I disregarded all the signs that it was over, and let some guy take me along for the ride.

So there you have it people. That's what haunts me.

February Feels

And just like that we're in February. The holidays are long over, but some of us still have some Christmas decorations up (guilty, but calm down, it's just a plain green wreath that could totally pass as a winter accent. I hope), and we're finally getting to those New Year's resolutions. Finally.

If you could ask your ex what bothered him/her about you, why they ended things, when they felt like it was over, and whatever else you're losing sleep over, would you do it? Personally, sitting in flea-covered grass naked sounds more fun, but that's just me.

It's such a rare thing to get closure after a breakup. Shit happens, excuses are given, and so many questions are left unanswered leaving you drowning in with your own thoughts, but these exes did it, and it sort of hurt to watch.

I guess I wouldn't do it because I'd rather not know the truth; there's that 75% chance the truth is what you don't want it to be and I'd prefer to continue living in my dream world that consists of a talking dolphin with Oprah-like qualities who tells me I'm pretty.

Famous Couples Halloween Costumes

Halloween is right about the corner and you're probably only reading this if you swore this is the year you'd FINALLY stop dressing up, but then you received a work email out about a costume contest where the winner gets a $25 Jamba Juice gift card, and now your college friend is suddenly throwing a last minute bring your own beer, snacks, wine, liquor, dessert, toilet paper, hand soap, and water Halloween extravaganza where NO ONE can enter without a costume party so you have to dress up this year.

So, on that note, I give you my list of couples costumes that might win you a gift card.

1. Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie: SUCH a classic people. This can easily be achieved with the right toy soldier jacket and set of pin curls. What will really sell this costume is if you walk around the party making out in the middle of large crowds for a few seconds, and just as everyone starts applauding you, stop and smile bashfully (re: MTV VMAs 1994 for inspo).

2. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in matching denim ensembles: this look can be achieved by taking all your old Abercrombie & Fitch jeans that you've been saving since high school in hopes that super low rise bell bottoms will come back in style, and sewing them all together in a misshapen mess. Top it off with some of Claire's Accessories' finest rhinestone jewelry from the prom/quinceanera department and call yourselves an early 2000s pop sensation!

3. Johnny and Baby in Dirty Dancing: oh, yes. There are so many Dirty Dancing looks to steal from this movie, so whatever you choose, just make sure every 20 minutes you run and jump into your date's arms as he lifts you above his shoulders like you're a little feather.

4. Danny and Sandy in Grease: pretty sure everyone at some point has wanted an excuse to pour themselves into this black on black getup Olivia Newton-John wore in Grease. What are you waiting for? Now's your chance! Halloween is as good of an excuse to wear this as shopping in a Topshop on a Saturday afternoon.

5. Don and Better Draper of Mad Men: again, super easy to achieve. Grab a vintage dress from a local thrift store, tease your hair into a bouffant, and then Google John Hamm's home address, break into his house, and hold him hostage as your date for the night. You might want one of those fancy cigarette holders too, but other than that, you're all set!

6. Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky of Full House: a plaid shirt or plain white tee and a vest has Uncle Jesse in the bag, and some high wasted jeans and a turtleneck will turn you into Aunt Becky in no time. Caveat: this costume is easily mistaken for American Apparel employees, so just make sure you're shouting "have mercy" every few minutes.

7. Ross and Rachel of Friends: this is a no-brainer. Just dig through all those clothes you saved from your Delias/Limited Too/Anchor Blue days, give yourself a good blow out, and throw an oversized sweater and light wash jeans on your guy. Bonus points if you draw whiskers on yourself and go as Ross and Rachel in Vegas.

End of Summer Reads

The end of summer is near, and if you're like me, you probably had a long list of books to read and only made a dent in one or two because catching up on The Bachelorette took their place.

So in honor of the few weeks you have left of summer, or just reading in general, here are a few books I highly recommend.

South of the Border, West of the Sun: I've only just begun diving in to Murakami after everyone and their mom was flipping out over him on social media, and I must say, I'm glad I did. His words are poetic as they follow the story of a boy growing into a man, who eventually longs for the one that got away in Tokyo.

Nicknames: Who doesn't have horrid dating stories they've buried deep in the back of their mind? Well, Mary Geneva does too and she documented her dating tales from New York in this book. This might make you laugh, or cringe, because it hits too close to home, but her lessons on love are not ones to forget.

Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar: GUYS, this book is my bible. Not only is Cheryl Strayed a fantastic storyteller because she has been through so much, but her advice on love and life is moving. Warning: keep a box of tissues close, some stories might make you lose it.

My Boyfriend Wrote a Book About Me: Um, can you imagine? Because this is real. Hilary Winston's boyfriend wrote a book about her, and then she got him back with this amazingly witty in-your-face tell-all. Not only does she touch on the relationship that shall not be named, but she shares even more stories about her exes, work life, and the joys of growing up and dealing with all that gross adult shit.

5 Things to Consider Before Moving in Together

Thinking about moving in with your SO? Wait, stop right there. Drop the packing tape and sit down.

Now, I'm a firm believer in the "when you know, you know," theory, and I think everyone's relationships are different and everyone moves at different paces; however, I do believe there are certain things that should be considered before moving in together whether you've been dating a year or five years.

1. Make sure you're on the same page with whatever it is you are to each other: want to get married? Say it. Want to Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell it? Say it. Basically, have the "where is this going" talk BEFORE going to get a U-Haul, k?

2. Talk money: if one of you isn't contributing to the bills equally, it could put a lot of strain on your relationship. It's no fun being the ONLY one bringing home the bacon, because who wants to share delicious thick-cut, maple-glazed bacon with someone who doesn't help out, nah I mean?

3. Be okay with losing a little independence: you don't have to lose your independence entirely, but the idea of coming and going as you please and answering to no one is a thing of the past when living with a SO. Prepare to communicate more, share a bathroom, and let him/her know when you're out late, so ya know, he/she doesn't think you're dead. It's just courtesy.

4. Pass the vacation test: do you still find each other supes adorbs after long vacations (or short ones)? If so, you passed the test; however, think twice if you want to kill each other during or by the end.

5. Make sure you can reconcile after arguments: hopefully this doesn't come as a shock, but you will argue when you move in together. It might be over something ridiculous, like not refilling the toilet paper roll, or it might be over something huge. So if you can't talk it out and move on before living together, you need to take a step back and reassess. There's no such thing as "I need space" when you live together, because you live together.

A Funny Podcast About Diaries

Raise your hand if you kept a diary that housed your deepest, darkest secrets (RAISES HAND HIGH)!

When I heard about Mortified, an awesome podcast about people reading their diary entries publicly, and on purpose, I had to hear it. I had only recently dug mine out after a move and lamented over my own tween tribulations, which for the most part consisted of entries about my crushes that were signed with a Lip Smacker kiss, when all those gross feelings of teenage angst came rushing back.

My diaries came in all shapes and sizes: once I tried to emulate the one from Harriet the Spy using a Mead paper notebook and some gel pens. Another time I shared one with friends that we'd pass back and forth between class and talk about how boring our teachers were, who the cutest guy was in our classes and so on. But my sickest one to date was a leather-bound Precious Moments diary (yes, Precious Moments, as in THE glass figurines) given to me as a gift. It even had a lock so I thought I was the shit!

What really drew me to this podcast is how candid people got with awkward stuff everyone goes through. We're talkin' love triangles, BFF drama, questioning the sexuality of your hetero boyfriend, you know, the usual.

Movie Spotlight: Overboard

In honor of the 4th of July, and all things patriotic, bedazzled and 80s, I thought I'd celebrate one of my favorite movies: Overboard.

Overboard is a scintillating tale of a bitchy rich lady who falls off her yacht and is taken to a local hospital where it's discovered that she lost her memory. To her rescue comes the hillbilly repair man she treated like dirt who claims her as his wife and turns her into his redneck trophy. It's quite fun.

I know it's not your typical star spangled movie, but hey, Goldie Hawn wears enough red and white getups and bedazzles enough of her sunglasses for it to be!

Plus, it has everything like:

A rich white guy partying with babes on a yacht.

ENORMOUS cell phones and that anklet.

Sass and seriously decorated 'dos. They don't make these in the 2000s!

A butler who does pedicures, plus that awesome patio set.

And KURT RUSSELL! Look at that hair!

This loving moment and a Canadian tuxedo.

And lastly (because Google's image supply from this movie is severely limited), very casual yacht attire.

So there you have it people, need more convincing? I think not. Enjoy your 4th of July, and don't fall off any boats!

Love Story No. 14: Realizing You Were Never In Love

Broken, beaten down, devastated and facing a life of emptiness. This break-up was surely going to finish me off. Or so I thought.

The blunt end of her sentence resulted in an almost cathartic feeling in every cell of my body. But I didn’t want it to be this way. I want pain, tears but nope…nothing. But I thought she was the one, my all, and now she’s letting me go, I demand to feel the sadness!

My efforts came to no avail. Try as I did, there wasn’t an ounce of pain present in my body. I think it had all been left behind in the relationship that never was. Instead, I experienced a sense of relief, and the day I was ‘let go’ was to be the defining moment of my life.

Deep down inside I knew the end was approaching and only emotion was stopping me from accepting the reality of it all. When the decision was made that day I was emotionless, much to her surprise.

She probably expected me to beg, fall to my knees and promise her the world, but there was an inner voice telling me to stand tall and proud. Something inside of me was overriding the emotional collapse I was expecting. I somehow knew everything was going to turn out fine. It was then I knew there was no point in fighting for something that was not worth the battle scars. In fact, I’d finally been freed from a life that I wasn’t happy living. The hand break had just been released and I was about to embark on an exciting new journey.

And so, as quickly as those 4 years had come and gone, I was on my own two feet, fending for myself again.

Love, or what I thought was love, had stood in my way. I’d given everything to someone who in truth had not been who I wanted. Everything about ‘us’ was what I thought love to be, but I was proven wrong.

Love is acceptance, love is freedom, love is vulnerability, love is from the heart. And we had become lost in translation of that a long time ago.

Love is synchronicity between two people. Two people accepting of each other's choices and actions. This is what I needed to find.

So yes, the day we broke up was the defining moment of my life. It allowed me to assess what my truths were and start to live them. It gave me the freedom to make decisions for me for a change and find the path to help me become powerful in my own right. And I knew that when I lived my truths, love would come my way again.

Love shouldn’t be restrictive. I wanted to grow in love, not whittle away like the autumn leaves.
Her choice was actually my choice. She knew me enough to read the signs and was brave enough to make the call. And for that I thank her.

All experiences are lessons. But hey, don’t waste your time in a toxic relationship. Trust that voice deep down that tells you there is something greater out there. I listen to that voice all the time now and I thank him for leading me to true love. A love that’s blossoming each and every day.

How Long Should You Stay Single Between Relationships?

We all have that friend who's always in a relationship. You know, the person who went from "in a relationship" to "single," then to "in a relationship" and back to "single," then you hid her because your newsfeed has just been her relationship status and no thanks, Becky.

It's so common these days for people to be on the market quickly after a breakup, after all, how hard is it? Break up today, be on Tinder tonight. Problem solved.

But how healthy is that? We've all heard a psychology professor or Dr. Phil say you need a little "me" time after a breakup: a little time to cope, reflect on what went wrong, gain your independence back, change your appearance, and decide what you want in a relationship, or what I like to call, "I'll have three scoops of Rocky Road in a waffle cone and this Butterfinger."

But some might argue that jumping back in the dating pool helps keep your mind off your ex because if you have a new person to send dirty Snapchats to, you won't send them to your ex. Or at least you won't send them to your ex until the new person is out of the picture, then you'll have two people to revenge Snapchat.

I've always believed in breaks after breakups because it does give you time to cope and it does give you time to just be you and do all the things you didn't have time to do when you were in a relationship. I think the urgency we feel to hop back into something stems from things like codependency or simply the fact that it feels like everyone you know is coupled up and the clock is ticking... but that's another blog post for another time.

I say stay single for a little while, live life, and then who knows what will fall in to your lap.
