Monday, Monday

First day of summer. I made the decision that I wasn't going to over-schedule my kids - like I said, this was selfish on my part in a way but I also want my kids to learn how to play. without. me. telling. them. how. Know what I mean? I will do it if it kills all 6 of us. But I also don't want them to get out of the habit of the learning bit. Some creative and fun activities that might also stimulate the brain a bit.

So I decided to figure out some ideas by searching this little web. Here are some sites I found that might help me a bit through the summer.

Some other things I am going to do this week? Or try. A boredom box. I am going to have my kids write down all the things that they can do in and around the house when I can't facilitate play. Maybe they will come up with things like color, make friendship bracelets, build with legos, clean their bedroom?

It is a good idea to have a designated area to hold all sorts of creative things for kids - popsicle sticks, those fuzzy bendy cleaners (can you tell I have a lack of sleep brain), lots of construction paper, blank paper, tape, glue, glitter, markers, paint, crayons and all sorts of artistic stuff. What else could you put there? Oddly, I have about 60-plus 4 oz containers that I filled with breast milk while Jack was in the NICU. They are being emptied of milk but are perfect for "scientific" experiments or for holding dirt, beads, seads. They are probably perfect to be shakey shake musical instruments for Caroline's back up singers.

We are also keeping an eye on what is growing in our garden. The peas have just bloomed their first blossoms, the lettuce is coming up, the beans are sprouting, the potatoes are doing what they are supposed to, I think. In any case, the kids are helping me keep an eye on it and we are noting our observations in a notebook.

I wish I could add such great photos of my craft central and my awesome garden but unfortunately our desktop (which is where the camera syncs) is having some issues. Like not starting.

With the end of the school year, when I think of good vibrations I think of The Beach Boys. But of course I was laughing out loud when Finny Finn and the Pucky Bunch did the Marky Mark song. Where do we even start with this? The fact that they didn't show Finn dancing to his full extent? Or Puck's dancing on the ground. It just had me laughing. I got the newest volume of glee music, Volume 3. It is missing a few but my kids and I are loving it. Caroline's favorite is "I Dreamed a Dream", Joey's is "Total Eclipse of the Heart" or "Turn Around" as he calls it. Eli's is "Safety Dance". In fact, he and 2 friends did a break dance number today for their class talent show using the music. I'll upload that for your viewing pleasure.

I'll refrain from rehashing the glee show with y'all, but I love when shows make me giggle or guffaw. Caroline's last day of school is today and E has one more day and then on to the dog days of summer. I haven't signed up for any activities yet this summer. One reason is that with the new babe, I didn't want to be running around from one scheduled thing to the next. Another reason is that we will have a few weeks of family in town this summer and I have needed to calendar all the comings and goings before I schedule anything else. Must. Do. That. And, I don't want to pay and pay for things. How do you get through the summer? And how do you do it without being way to busy to enjoy it? I was thinking of doing a bit of summer schooling around here. I am going to have the kids each pick one topic each week and we will "study" it out, find fun learning activities to keep them occupied and keep their brains moving. I'll tell you more about that later. I would love to hear your ideas.

Get ready for some good getting to know you. Tiffany's answers are in green and Leslie's in blue.

1. The perfect night out goes like this...

Hmm, the setting could be hard to choose here... but it would definitely be a warm, breezy evening. Either a sidewalk cafe in NYC or the patio of my best friend or sister... twinkle lights, some bouncy jazz or Féla, candles and the company of sis, bf and their significant others and my hubby. Cocktails to start, and a three hour meal in courses doused with amazing, rich wines and conversation that spawns belly laughter. This is followed by a deep sleep, and waking up past 9am with my daughter staying over at Grandma's house. A fun night out is always more fun when you can sleep in a little.

A warm summer evening. Surroundings that stimulate inspiration. Fresh air filling our lungs. Great food filling our bellies. A new wine. Amazing music. And long hours of conversations with friends and family filling our souls.

2. Best thing about working with my sister is...

She is amazingly creative and intuitive and can make anything... beautiful. She has a magic touch with creating an alluring environment.... whether it is a brand to experience or the interior of a home. So working with her, I like to think, allows me to learn by osmosis. I try to just suck it all in. It is also such a gift to be able to spend so much time with my sister... I feel that it has brought us closer, in a unique type of way, that allows us to see that 'working' side of each other many family members rarely get to experience. Honestly, its just so nice working with her... there isn't anyone else I'd rather work with.

Knowing that pretty much any idea we come up with will eventually come to fruition and better the lives of our families, and sometimes with very little work or expended effort.

It's a little magical really... we may share an idea in a passing conversation then months will go by and without even realizing it the idea will have taken form. We'll notice it and say "hey look.. we talked about that months ago and now here it is!" That doesn't happen in other working arrangements I've been in. I think it has a lot to do with our connection. We plant seeds and the good energy makes them grow.

3. What is the music that defines you? One band? Even better, what band could the world do without?

OH boy... this is a hard one. I love music, and have been quite enraptured with it since I was a youth. I love all types, from bluegrass to jazz, to punk, to hip hop and classical. There isn't one type of music defines me because my mood defines the type of music I feel like listening to. That is it's beauty, afterall. I find a good song or stretch of tunes can truly inspire any creation, be it a good meal or a design that was in a rut. Right now, since summer is approaching, I am very much into reggae, dub, rumba catalana, and afrobeat... particularly Féla Kuti. It just transports me to another time and somewhere tropical, which is nice if you can't get there very often. A band the world could do without? Kesha... although you couldn't technically call her a band.

Oh man, that's a tough one. Music is such an integral part of my being, and my musical tastes are so broad and varied that I doubt there is a single band that can really define who I am. I can start a day with Yo-Yo Ma, spend my lunch hour with Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys, late afternoon coffee with Flo Rida and evening wine with Zeppelin. I guess what really feeds my soul is great jazz though.

I will say - I have a teenage daughter and I never thought I would be the one to complain about "the kids these days," but man... if I hear one more artist who is hiding behind auto tune and the same club beat I might lose it. That's what the world can do without. Auto tune. It's completely devoid of soul. Ick. It's time to the music industry to get creative again instead of churning stuff out of the marketing machine. If we're not careful we're going to raise a generation of musical robots.

4. You are being whisked away on the perfect vacation, where to? And what 5 things are a must to have with you?

Ahh, vacation. It's been a long time. Again, this could change yearly depending on my mood, but right now I'd say Greece, when its hot, on the Mediterranean beach. Five things I must have: 1) my husband, 2) endless carafes of wine, 3) sunscreen, 4) my camera, 5) lip gloss

Doesn't really matter where as long as there are new, beautiful things to see and learn about. That can happen anywhere really. Beach or mountains. Large metropolis or rolling countryside. Even dives in small town USA.

Must haves:

1) A good pair of walking shoes.

2) Enough cash to enjoy great food and a decent bed.

3) A camera

Must be without:

4) Work schedule

5) Email

5. 2010 may be the best year ever because...

We will be adding to our family... and possibly, starting over in a new location. Change is fun and keeps you young.

We are the masters of our fate for the first time.. well.. ever. We've experienced enough in our work and our lives now (yes, we're of a certain age) that we have the knowledge and connections to make pretty much ANYTHING happen. All it will take is the vision and the stubbornness to push them through. And yes.. we have plant of both. ;)

6. How did you guys come up with the concept and how did you get started?

(Tiff) In all our dreaming and discussion of working together over the years, we have always expressed mutual interest in doing something 'good' with our business... giving back in some way. So, in January 2010, soon after we launched Handshoe Design Collaborative, I began a small promotional project for a close friend. While sketching out ideas, I developed the 2010love mark and immediately felt like I had something bigger... with potential for growth. I quickly sent it to Leslie asking her... "Hey, do you think people would wear this on a t-shirt?" Her response was, "YES." We saw an immediate campaign that could inspire people to do what we had just decided to do: make a positive change starting in 2010. So we printed some shirts, did a photoshoot, launched a blog, set up an Etsy shop, twitter account and facebook page all within two weeks... and began talking about 2010love... a lot.

(Leslie) Yes, we had been talking for years about how to create a working environment as designers that would allow us to create work that really mattered — to us, and to the world. We’d tossed around ideas for a long time, then when Tiff came up with the mark, it was as if everything magically coalesced. All of our ideas suddenly had a face, and the potential for growth started to identify itself. Sometimes the best ideas happen organically. Serendipity is a good thing.

Etsy Love

Apparently school is almost out. A friend had to remind me that there isn't 2 or three weeks of school left but 4 days. Where did the last month go? I'm in the haze of nursing, diapers, baby sleep and repeat. Poor family that needs my brain. Today the kids got out the slip n' slide even though we have had a cool, wet spring - I guess they are getting desperate.

I decided to see what Etsy had to offer in terms of "send the kids outside to have fun" fun. Here is just some of the good stuff.

I love a good teepee and it looks like Calico Skies Crafts likes to make them. My kids would l.o.v.e. this. Not joking.

Sidewalk paint? Are you kidding? We love our sidewalk chalk but paint from Sidewalk Sensations might take us to a whole 'nother level.

We'd go to my Grandma's each weekend when we were kidsters and get out my uncle's retro skateboards (not so retro then). We loved them. They weren't trick ones, but good riding ones. I still have one in my garage that my kids can practice on. But a custom board from Forshner Designs, without all the skulls and comic stuff on the bottom? I would love that. And my three year old shows some promise on the ones we have here.

Summer screams out loud when I see a hula hoop. You too? And a custom one? You might as well order one for each member of the family and have some competition. I love these ones from Island Hoops. And I was reading their shop announcement about hooping and I think I might have to try it.

When we bought our house 8 years ago, even thought the property was 60 plus years old, the original owners never planted a legitimate tree. So our thoughts of awesome tree swings or forts were postponed until our shademaster or maple grow a bit larger and stronger. My dream one day is to have this swing from shiver.me.splinters hanging playfully from one of our branches, with one of our monkeys swinging freely.

We played countless games of Kick the Can, Hide and Seek, soccer and who knows what else outside during the summer. What did you do all summer when you were a kid?

I am so excited about this giveaway. Mari from Autumn Dame has been patient with me over the last couple of weeks and I so appreciate it. I have music constantly playing--I have a playlist for almost every time of day, mood, occasion, etc.
(You should really start cooking to Jazz, Ella & Billie are my girls!)

4. You decide to live on the perfect island and can have only 5 items - what are they (food and shelter are a given)? iPod/Stereo (music is must), Journal, Kindle, wedding ring, and my camera

5. Which glee character are your most like? And what song would you like to cover?

Ha! Do I watch Glee?! Do one legged ducks swim in circles? I L.O.V.E. Glee. Obsessed. Character I'm most like? I'd like to think Finn, minus the guy part :) And I'd cover any of Lady Gaga's songs, because I love her.

6. You are grateful for... Chocolate.

Do you see why? She asked if I had any more questions for her and I have just one, When are we meeting for lunch? Oh, and can you make me a mixed tape? If it isn't on glee or on a Backyardigan soundtrack (or U2) I don't hear too much.

There have been so many things to be grateful for in the past 3 weeks - a relatively good delivery (minus the need to deliver a month early), a babe well enough to be home, any sleep I can get, happy kids, wonderful friends who take care of me.

When Amanda heard about the birth she was Johnny on the Spot. "I am bringing an enchilada casserole to your husband right now. It is frozen, heat it up when you need it." Voile' there it was and I wasn't even out of the delivery room yet. I need the recipe and especially the enchilada sauce because I want to make gum out of it just so I can taste the goodness. Then I got this beautiful basket full of homebaked pumpkin chocolate chip muffins and some Burt's Bees Baby lotion - both yum. The muffins got me through a week's worth of breakfast and lunch and the lotion, yum. It was like this gal I knew since 6th grade had gone all Martha or good Bree on me. Why do I feel like she is all grown up and I am still a reckless toddler? In any case, I am sure I will talk about the other kindnesses brought about but she deserves a shout out. The picture below is an imposter but by the time I thought to document the beautiful basket there were only crumbs.

I have been asking her to do a couple of posts on here with her fantastic verbal to paper skills but alas she is a busy gal and either doesn't take me seriously or really is putting her family, school, work and church before something silly. No really, 2 jobs outside of home, her Masters, and all those long-legged family members at home - I don't know how she does it. Maybe she can tell us.

Yeah, I'm a bit crazy for it. And I have been sporadic at best here at We Chirp. But it was like the writers at glee were listening to my favorite things and hurried and threw together the Artie Flash Mob Dance. They must have.

I know this one is backwards, but best I could do.

I want this print from The Wheatfield with a handle. I want to hold it up each time I am nursing Jack and the other kids come in with some crazy dispute (and there are lots of these lately). I also want this print to hold up after.

Just read the description for this Mason Bee home from Andrew's Reclaimed and you know why I need one in my garden and you need one in your garden.

I love this card from warpeDesign. I think it would be a great personalized addition to any gift. And then you could frame it, simply, so great.

243 - number of tulips in my front yard, yay, so pretty and nice to look at while I am nursing Jack.

7 - number of times I have asked Joey to stop bouncing on me and Jack while nursing today.

0 - number of times Joey stopped.

67 - number of times Joey has asked to watch "that funny music" since I got home last Thursday (I let my kids watch some of the music videos from glee). He has now moved on to "Turn Around" and "Run Joey Run".

As many times as Joey has asked to watch it - number of times I have questioned why it says "FIN" at the end of Run Joey Run. Why does it say FIN? Does anyone know?

8 - number of times I watched Run Joey Run before I figured out the dad was the old pedophile glee coach.

What can I say, glee makes me really happy. And so does the fact that Friday Night Lights is back on. And Tim Riggins. Does it sound like I watch too much tv? For some reason, reading while I nurse has never been my thing. Watching tv is. And now that there is glee, I can watch and watch and if my kids are hanging out, they request the music vids.

Once upon a time when I was in college, I lived in the sorority house with a bunch of gals. At one point one sista, we'll call her Ginger, dated a guy named Jesse. This was in between break ups with her now husband. And every time Jesse would come over we would blast "Jessie's Girl". And then, when they had finished dating and she was dating her now husband again, we would play it when he came over. We weren't very nice. Did you know that Finn is singing it tonight?

Wednesday morning was eventful. To be less graphic, it began with a placental abruption and ended that evening with a baby, 4 weeks early. We feel blessed that everything went as well as it did. The baby currently known as Baby Brother (we do not name willy nilly here) was admitted to the NICU and luckily is the least of their worries, which is wonderful. Bad that he has to be there, but good that he is doing so well. In any case, posting will be even more sporadic than before BUT I already had a great giveaway lined up for Monday, so check back - it is a good one.

I am re-watching the Madonna episode. I can't get over it. Any of it. Happiness. IN any case, I think the costuming is my favorite thing next to the music. When I am back to my pre-baby-ness (I say when and quietly think if) I want to dress like Emma Pillsbury with a slight Quinn-ness and a tiny bit Rachel. Do you know how many sights are dedicated to Emma and her style of dress? Even my aunt was excited when she saw one of her skirts on Emma and saw a new way to wear it. A quick look at an interview with the costume designer here. How great would that job be?

Yeah, I have issues with makeup. The other day my mascara just vanished. Into thin air. So two days I went without (the horror) and then finally could only make it to Target so I picked up Sexy Curves by Rimmel because I had read that people seriously dug it. I seriously didn't. It was super hard to put on, super hard to take off.

So I had to run quickly up to my local supermarket and I grabbed Maybelline Lash Discovery, the mini brush version - no idea why. Maybe its Maybelline. And so far so good.

But even better than that I had to pick up some more eye makeup remover my next trip to Target and got this and am in serious like with it. No weird reactions, lovely feeling, doesn't hurt my eyeballs if by chance it gets between my closed eyelids and protective eyelashes.

And another another serious like bordering on love, I changed up my body wash. My skin has been quirky this pregnancy and I have had a hard time treating what ails it. I started using the Olay product and it is succulent. Quite pleased.

I ordered it on Amazon for what I thought was a great prices and then saw it for less (and no shipping to pay) at Costco. I have to admit I have issues with Martha. She is so perfectly condescendingly perfect. Don't hate me. She is a genius but can't get into her. But this book. This book is so good. So simple, so informative, so necessary for a beginner's library and wonderful in a pro's. I can't wait to delve into it more.

I know, I am lame. And unreliable. But I am consistent in my love of Glee. I was giddy watching it on Tuesday. Giddy. Then there is this. And something has been bothering me about one of the dancers. But I figured it out - the guy in the vid at :20 patting his face is Nathan from SYTYCD, right? And I laugh out loud every time she sings "Will Shuester I hate you" because Kurt's face kills me. I love him.

I have few needs right now (such a lie, I am a needy mess), but Glee makes me soooooo happy. Am I right about Nathan from SYTYCD? What did you think of the last episode? Who wants to watch with me next time?

I am thinning out the hens-and-chicks in my garden and would hate to just throw them away!!! So, if you want any bring up a grocery bag and grab some. They multiply and replenish the earth - so efficient. They sell of $2.50 each at Smith's, so this is quite the bargain. Great in rock gardens or borders or just potted.
