It's our first time to experience typhoon here in Davao City. Storm signal no.2 has been lifted over Davao del Sur including the Metro Davao. We just stayed at home because there were heavy rains and strong winds for hours in the morning till early in the afternoon. Then PAGASA lifted Storn Signal No. 1 in Davao City and Davao del Sur.

Taoist Temple in Cebu

Built in 1972, the Cebu Taoist Temple is located in Beverly Hills Subdivision in Cebu City, Philippines. The temple was built by Cebu's substantial Chinese community. With an elevation of 300 meters above sea level, the temple is a towering, multi-tiered, multi-hued attraction accessible by three separate winding routes.

Unlike the neighboring Phu Sian Temple, the Taoist temple is open to the worshipers and non-worshipers alike. A ritual among devotees is where one prays to the gods to grant one's wish. The ritual includes washing of hands, going inside the chapel barefoot and dropping two blocks of wood. If the blocks of wood are both face up then one could make a wish. If not then it is not yet the time for one's wish to be granted and one has to come to the temple some other time.

The entrance to the temple is a replica of the Great Wall of China. The temple includes a chapel, a library, a souvenir shop and a wishing well. The spacious balconies offer a scenic view of the downtown Cebu. ( wikipedia )

We went there on September 22, 2012... it was a cool and rainy day but still we were able to get there... I wasn't able to to pray on their chapel because I do not know the rituals and I might get wrong following those instructions! It was my first time to visit the Temple and hopefully can go back there soon! :)

Sky Walk Extreme Adventure

We went to Crown Regency Hotel and Towers in Cebu on September 22, 2012. It was a great experience for us that we successfully completed the walk on the Country's First Skywalk Extreme, a path around the 37th level outer-rim of the hotel, 126.55 meters high above the street. It is the tallest hotel tower in the Philippines.

The Sky Walk Extreme gives you a nerve-racking feeling as if your floating in a cloud nine. It is widely known to be the 4th in the world and first in the Philippines. I really enjoyed the thrill!!!

Trails to Antarctica, Penguin Quest and Snow Village

We went to Manila Ocean Park on December 30, 2011 to see and experience "Trails to Antarctica". It is the first and only Penguin attraction here in the Philippines.

We started having fun with their 42 meter ice slide in Slide O' Fun. Then you walk-through to see the Humboldt Penguins. They are really so adorable and love taking pictures with them. We also had a chance to feed them. It was really such a great experience. And finally, feel the Winter chill as you frolic in the "Snow Village". And we're lucky we went there bit early so we were the only one in the Snow Village and was able to take more pictures and had some fun!

Christmas Lights and Sounds Show 2011

We went to Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati to watch their Christmas Lights and Sounds Show yesterday (Dec. 23). It is one of the must see sights in Metro Manila this holiday season. You can see the magical spectacle every night for free at 7:00pm till 9:00pm with intervals of every 30 minutes.

The Puerto Prinsesa Underground River is the only nominee of the Philippines in New 7 Wonders of Nature. I am proud to say that it is included in the Provisional New 7 Wonders of Nature 2011 together with the Amazon, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo and Table Mountain.

Halloween (or Hallowe'en) is an annual holiday observed on October 31, which commonly includes activities such as trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

Superstitions:

A burning a candle inside a jack-o-lantern on Halloween keeps evil spirits and demons at bay.
If a candle suddenly goes out by itself on Halloween, as though by breath or wind, it is believed that a ghost has come to call.
Always burn new candles on Halloween to ensure the best of luck. It is not a good idea to burn Halloween candles at any other time of the year. It may bring bad luck or strange things will happen to you, over which you will have no control.
Gazing into a flame of a candle on Halloween night will enable you to peer into the future.
Girls who carry a lamp to a spring of water on this night can see their future husband in the reflection.
It is believed that if a person lights a new orange colored candle at midnight on Halloween and lets it burn until sunrise, he or she will be the recipient of good luck.
If you hear footsteps trailing close behind you on Halloween night, do not to turn around to see who it is, for it may be Death himself! To look Death in the eye, according to ancient folklore, is a sure way to hasten your own demise.
To cast a headless shadow or no shadow at all is still believed by many folks in the United States and Europe to be an omen of death in the course of the next year.
The old Celtic custom was to light great bonfires on Halloween, and after these had burned out to make a circle of the ashes of each fire. Within this circle, and near the circumference, each member of the various families that had helped to make a fire would place a pebble. If, on the next day, any stone was displaced, or had been damaged, it was considered to be an indication that the one to whom the stone belonged would die within twelve months.
According to an old English folk belief, you will invite bad luck into your home if you allow a fire to burnout on Halloween. To remedy the situation, the fire must be rekindled by a lighted sod brought from the home of a priest.

We Can Be Anything

WeCanBeAnything is an education advocacy campaign, born of a partnership between the Apl.de.Ap Foundation (AdAF) and the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation (NCAF).

The campaign was conceived after apl.de.ap (a.k.a. Allan Pineda), the Filipino-American member of the world-famous Black Eyed Peas, expressed his desire to help improve the education situation in the Philippines.

From his own experience, he knew that, for many Filipinos mired in poverty or other difficult circumstances, education is the only long-term ticket to a better life. Unfortunately, millions among the youth are deprived of this ticket to opportunity or drop out of school for a variety of reasons. One basic obstacle is the severe shortage of public school classrooms; the Department of Education (DepEd) estimates the backlog at 66,800 classrooms as of schoolyear 2010-2011, Another factor is the barren environment for learning in many parts of the country due to scarce resources with which to set up libraries and similar facilities.

Several organizations have launched programs to address these and many other problems besetting the Philippine educational system. Through his foundation, Apl.De.Ap wants to be able to help some of these programs.

On a personal level, he simply wants to tell young Filipinos that he was able to go so far in life because he got an education. To deliver this message, he has composed the song, "We Can Be Anything", around which a campaign could be built.

To give apl.de.ap a platform for his advocacy, NCAF appointed him the special ambassador for education of the iamninoy-iamcory Movement in February 2011.

Through the WeCanBeAnything campaign, apl.de.ap lends his celebrity, music and personal network to rally massive support for key education initiatives, while reinforcing the broader message on the importance of education.

Proceeds from the campaign will benefit the Bayanihang Pampaaralan initiative of 57-75 movement for educational reform and the MyLibrary program of Ayala Foundation/ Philippine Development Foundation.

They will always be the best of family and friends, entwined together, through all the days of their lives. Kadayawan Festival

The Kadayawan Festival is an annual festival in the city of Davao in the Philippines. Its name derives from the friendly greeting "Madayaw", from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw", meaning good, valuable, superior or beautiful. The festival is a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.

Today, Kadayawan has transformed into a festival of festivals, with a number of spin-off festivals in the region. The festival honors Davao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral “lumads”, its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as its representatives parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings granted on the city. A celebration that interfaces the three aspects: tribal; industrial and; arts and entertainment. The festivities are highlighted with floral floats, street-dancing competitions and exhibits that showcases the island's tourism products and services.
