Sony resuming PlayStation Network

Sony has said it began a phased restoration of its PlayStation Network games service on a country by country basis and expected the process to be complete by May 31.
The PlayStation Network, which enables PlayStation games console owners to download games and pit their skills against rivals, has been offline since April 19, after Sony discovered hackers had breached security and accessed personal details on 77 million accounts.
It shut down the network and its Qriocity online music and movie service, frustrating many users, but later found out that a separate online games service had also been accessed, forcing a further shutdown.
The company said phased restoration of the Sony Online Entertainment PC-based online games service also began on Sunday.
The Japanese electronics and entertainment giant apologised to customers for the outages and said in a statement a range of new security measures had been introduced.
"I can't thank you enough for your patience and support during this time," Sony No. 2 Kazuo Hirai said in the news release, acknowledging that customers were "anxious" to use their products again.
"We are taking aggressive action at all levels to address the concerns that were raised by this incident, and are making consumer data protection a full-time, company wide commitment."
Users of the Sony Online Entertainment service will be offered free game time as compensation for the outage, the company said.

(CNN) -- Apple CEO Steve Jobs made a bold gesture at the company's annual developers conference last June when he pledged to unite the technology industry under one video-calling standard.
"FaceTime is based on a lot of open standards," Jobs said, referring to Apple's video-chat product. "And we're going to take it all the way. We're going to the standards bodies starting tomorrow. And we're going to make FaceTime an open industry standard."
That statement sparked thunderous applause when it was made 11 months ago. But Apple appears to have made no progress since then, according to experts in the fields of video calling and Web standardization. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.
The prospect of tech giants uniting under one protocol for video that would allow, say, a FaceTime user to call someone on Google Talk seems even less likely today than it did when Apple first floated the concept last year

Windows 7 almost five times more secure than XP

Windows 7 is four to five times less vulnerable to malware infections than is Windows XP.

Those are the findings of Microsoft's latest Security Intelligence Report , which detailed in depth the state of software vulnerabilities, exploits, security breaches, and malware in 2010.

Overall, the study found that infection rates for newer Microsoft operating systems with the latest service packs are consistently lower than those for older OSes, giving Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 the highest marks for security.
