Early Life

Tom Jones was born in South Wales and was challenged early in life by a case of tuberculosis. According to his own statement, his time fighting tuberculosis was the worst two years of his life and he was unable to do little but listen to music and draw. After some initial success the young singers popularity began to decline and he switched his style to more of a country sound which revitalized his career.

The Las Vegas Years

In the late sixties Tom Jones became one of several stars to begin headlining in Las Vegas. His shows became known for their sexual tension and raw energy. During his time in Vegas, Tom Jones befriended Elvis Presley and the two became close friends. At this time Tom Jones decided that he preferred the more lucrative club acts to cutting new records and it would be quite some time before he released a new album.

Coming back

For a long time Tom Jones seemed destined to be a footnote in music history, however he enjoyed a rather sudden and strong resurgence in the late 80s and early nineties and has since remained at the forefront of the world wide music scene. In the end, Tom Jones is sure to remain part of the music world for years to come and even when he dies there is little doubt many people will remember what he offered. His combination of crooning lyrics, sexually charged performances, and memorable tunes is sure to last for years and years to come.

Firstly, choose a theme that is close to your heart. A song reflects the soul and emotion of a songwriter. If you cannot put your heart and soul to the song, you will not be able to come up with a song worthy of people's attention. Opt for a genre of your choice - be it rock song, happy novelty songs or sentimental love songs.

Secondly, you need to focus on the lyrics of the song. You can have the greatest song arrangement but if your lyrics do not really voice out what it is supposed to, you cannot reach the audience. Use simple words that are very deep because audiences who will listen to your song want simple yet thoughtful lyrics.

Hone your songwriting skills and participate in a song contest.

Guitar Straps: Stand Up And Put A Guitar On!

Guitar Straps: Stand Up And Put A Guitar On!

Back in the early part of the twentieth century, the guitar was anything but central to any kind of musical ensemble. Electric instruments were not yet invented, and any particular style of guitar that existed at the time just simply could not project the type of volume that a horn instrument, a piano, or a drum set could. However, in the thirties and forties, the guitar became a much more popular and prominent instrument. Once the electric guitar was invented and the kinks were worked out in regards to the amplification of the guitar, guitars went from being a background instrument in big bands to being the primary instrument in the majority of musical groups. With guitarists now front and center on the musical stage, many guitarists wanted to be able to stand up and to move around on stage. That being the case, guitar straps became a very common guitar accessory.

There are a couple of different ways in which guitar straps can affect the playing of a guitarist. For one thing, guitar straps play an important part in the stability of the guitar while you are playing, assuming that you are playing while standing up. As a guitarist, you want to have the guitar generally stay in one place in relation to your body. If a guitar does not do this, it can make it significantly harder to play properly. Another issue that comes into play with guitar straps is finding the right height for your guitar to hang at off of your shoulders. When it comes to technique, one major mistake that a lot of beginner guitarists make is to have the guitar hanging quite low on the guitar strap. This puts a lot more strain on the player's wrists and makes playing significantly more difficult. Having the guitar up closer to your chest reduces the angle of the wrists to the fingerboard and makes your fingers much more versatile on the guitar. That being the case, it is generally important to have plenty of adjustability in your guitar strap. While most straps have a buckle or clip and plenty of length for making the necessary adjustments, some straps are not adjustable and thus finding the right length of strap is important in those cases.

Just like any guitar accessory, you can find straps that are dirt cheap and straps that will cost more than some guitars. It all depends on what you want. If you are serious about your playing, quality should generally be your first concern. However, the strap is a very simple accessory, and you can still find high quality guitar straps in the 3-5 dollar range. However, I have found that as guitarist grow in experience and their tastes change, other factors come into play as well. Just like with the guitar itself, guitar straps tend to incorporate a certain element of style into their appearance. While some guitarists are content with the cheap nylon straps that cost less than their lunch, many prefer something with some kind of graphic or perhaps a genuine leather strap that has some artistic design on it. Additionally, comfort is another issue that comes into play when choosing a strap. The strap is securing an instrument, and often a somewhat heavy one, to your shoulders for the entire time that you play. In my band, I am generally playing guitar for about three hours at a time for concerts. I learned the hard way that a cheap strap can cut into your shoulders after a certain amount of time. If you play for extended periods, you might consider something that has some degree of padding, as it can make playing much less of a strain physically.

How to Choose the Perfect Music Recording Studio

Author Resource: Katrina Wagner. Miloco is the largest and most dynamic group of recording studios in the UK as well as Recording Studios Spain. They provide one of the best recording services across the industry, and pride themselves on the fact that their company is driven by some of the most respected and established professionals in the business. Article provided by - Published-Articles.com

Only another artist could understand how much work really goes into creating a quality piece of music; the time that's spent learning the craft and the creative energy that goes into actually coming up with a new and unique piece of music that's worth recording. If there are other artists involved in a collaborative effort it multiplies everything, there is a whole lot of dedication and commitment involved. So when the time comes to record the goal is to find the best recording studiofor the money.

What is it that you should look for when you begin scouting for a facility to do your recording in? One attribute that should be a priority when looking for the right recording studio is if they have a qualified on-site recording engineer with an established reputation for producing quality products. One with a good reputation for having an even temperament and being easy to work with because the last thing you need is to get involved with some temperamental prim donna. Having someone that is involved in the process but isn't willing to make the effort to get along with others will only lead to problems. You may end up feeling rushed to finish your project just to get out of there and this in turn can only serve to have a negative effect on the quality of your final product.

The perfect recording studio will also have a separate well insulated control room; a control room that's equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipment and features that allow for maximum options and flexibility.

Another thing to look for is overall quality design with an eye towards comfort. A place you can relax in can only help to expedite the creative process.

Acoustics is also incredibly important, so look around and ask them what they've done to optimize the acoustics.

A nice and roomy full-size recording room is also a big plus to look for. One with at least a few isolation booths where you can set up instruments like drums, so you can better control the type and volume of sound that's coming out. Soundproofingis also just as important as acoustics in the recording room, so before you make your final decision you need to check that out as well to make sure that's up to your standards.

Then if you don't have the means for transporting your equipment to and from the studio ask them if they have access to a van or truck, and if so perhaps they can be of some assistance in helping you moving your equipment.

Lastly there's the issue of pricing that has to be taken into consideration and recording time in a top-rated studio is definitely not cheap. It all comes down to how much money you have to spend on your recording project and keep in mind that, just like so many other things in life that you're going to buy or rent, you get what you pay for. So do some comparison-shopping to become familiar with the general price structure for recording time in a professional grade studio before you make your final decision.

So when the time comes to record the goal is to find the best recording studio for the money.

Choosing Music to Fit Your Style and Your Venue

Whether you're exchanging vows in a park with flowers in your hair or wearing the latest European fashions as you gather in a cavernous cathedral, the music you choose for your wedding ceremony should fit your style.

Mendelssohn's Wedding March is a phenomenal piece of music, but it's not for everyone. Don't be afraid to think outside of the box on your wedding day. You may just discover an idea that is much more meaningful and beautiful than going with the "standard" wedding marches and classical music.

How do you find the right music for your style? "The best advice I can give is to listen," says Aaron Mauldin of Aaron's DJ Services in Kern County, CA. "Write down an idea if something strikes you that you would like to incorporate into your wedding music. You might hear a song on the radio or at the end of a movie. You might hear the mellow notes of a harp, saxophone, or piano and know that this type of sound is what represents your feelings. Buy CDs and find music that means something to your soul," he says.

The type of music used in a wedding ceremony must be a good fit for your venue. In churches, couples often have to stick close to an approved list of musical choices. A bride who has her heart set on walking down the aisle to the very popular Bridal Chorus by Wagner (also known as Here Comes the Bride) may be disappointed to find that the pastor or musical director will not allow those pieces to be used because of the negative connotations of its original setting (from the opera Lohengrin, to mock an ill-fated wedding). In fact, in 1971 the Roman Catholic Church and its Congregation for Divine Worship of the Sacraments issued a document forbidding the use of Bridal Chorus at weddings.

In secular venues or garden weddings, a couple can usually choose any type of music they'd like, though there may be some limitations if their chosen minister is affiliated with a particular church and set his or her own guidelines.

In any type of venue, wedding music can be further dictated by the amount of space and the availability of instruments. Some very old churches may only have a pipe organ, which might limit your processional choices to traditional organ pieces such as Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. Alternatively, some newer churches may have only a piano, which could slightly diminish the grandeur of the bride's entrance. In these cases, couples may choose to bring in a string quartet or add instruments to play along with piano for a fuller sound. At outdoor weddings, instruments are often limited to ones that can be easily carried and don't need electricity. Guitars, harps or string quartets are most often used at outdoor weddings, and can be exactly the right fit - a string quartet playing Spring from Vivaldi's Four Seasons at a beautiful May or June wedding when flowers are in full bloom can be breathtaking.

Music Notes: The Basics Of Musical Notation

Author Resource: Duane Shinn. A free email newsletter on exciting piano chords and chord progressions from Duane Shinn is available free at "Music Notes"Article provided by - Published-Articles.com

The pitch of a note is represented by its placement on a musical staff (five horizontal lines) or on ledger lines above or below the staff. For example, the first line of the staff (treble clef) is the note E, the space between the first and second lines is F, and a note on the second line is the note G. As the notes ascend on the staff (on the written music), they are played as continually higher pitches, and as lower and lower pitches as they descend down the staff. These notes are played separately to create a melody, or in combination with each other to produce chords.

The following note names are used in music notation: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G (then they resume the same pattern an octave higher (or lower) beginning again with the note A). In addition to these "natural" notes, there are also notes named as sharp (A#, C#, D#, F#, G#) and as flat (Ab, Bb, Db, Eb, Gb). A sharped note is a half step (or one semitone) above the note it affects, and a flatted note is a half step (or one semitone) below the note it affects. In other words, a G# is played one half step (one piano key) above a G, and a Eb is played one half step below an E.

It is important to know that the notes B#, E#, Fb and Cb do not exist like other notes -- they are "enharmonic" (looking at the piano, you'll see there are places on the keyboard where two white keys exist without a black key between them). These notes are not included in scales or chords.

The duration (how long a note lasts) of a note or group of notes (chord) is marked by its appearance. A whole note, for example, is an "open" (oval not filled in) note without a stem and its duration lasts for a complete measure. A half note is a whole note with a stem, lasting for half a measure. A quarter note is "closed" (i.e., a filled in oval) with a stem and lasts for one beat.

Stems (attached to notes) extend below or above the note depending on where the notes appears on the staff. An eighth note (one half a beat) is written like a quarter note but with a "flag" appearing on the note's stem. A sixteenth note has two flags on its stem. Sometimes eighth or sixteenth note appear in succession. In that case, they are attached to each other with a bar that crosses the top or bottom of the stem where their flags would normally appear.

Notes are tied together in a number of other ways including ties, slurs, glissandos and triplets. These have an effect on how the music sounds. For example, notes with slurs are played smoothly (such as one stroke of a violin bow or a passage sung without the singer taking a breath between notes). A smooth glide through a series of notes is called a glissando.

Ties add the time value of two or more notes, where triplets are three notes played against one beat (or two or more beats in come cases). Triplets are sometimes marked with the number 3 to indicate they are to be played equally in tempo.

History Of MP3 Technology: The Age Of The Free Legal Music Download?

Have we now entered the age of the free and legal music download? Fifteen years ago asking such a question would have elicited a puzzled response. However, today with the proliferation of iPods and taking into consideration that many independent artists now offer free samples of their music to build a following and to drive concert ticket sales, you could answer that question with a firm yes.

MP3 is a digital audio encoding format. It stands for MPEG Audio Layer III. MPEG stands for Motion Pictures Expert Group. It is a standard for digital audio compression and playback. MP3 uses lossy compression to decrease the size of a music file with small or no loss in quality. This compression works by perceptual coding, which reduces or discards components that are not as audible to human hearing. MP3 is a common format for audio storage and is widely used for sharing music.

MP3 technology traces its development back to the early 1980's. Doctoral student Karlheinz Brandenburg started working on digital music compression at Germany's University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. After he finished his doctoral work, Brandenburg joined James D. Johnston at AT&T-Bell Labs to work on music compression.

In 1987, the Fraunhofer Institute began doing research on high-quality audio coding. The project was code-named EU147, the EU stood for EUREKA. The EU147 was financed by the European Community from 1987 to 1994. Brandenburg joined the staff of Erlangen-Nuremberg as an assistant professor in 1990. He continued his work on music compression with members of the Fraunhofer Society, a group of prestigious scientists, and later became a member of the Fraunhofer Institute staff.

The institute received assistance with coding from professor Dieter Seitzer of the University of Erlangen, and the Fraunhofer research team was led by Karlheinz Brandenburg. Together they continued working on the challenge of creating superior, low bit rate coding. The groundwork had been laid with OCF and PXFM coding. Now it had to be evolved.

To test and develop MP3 technology, Brandenburg chose the song "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega. The simple tune was extremely difficult to reproduce without a great deal of background noise, and compressing it caused severe compromises in audio quality. He listened to the song repeatedly, each time making refinements to the technology. Finally the developers had a breakthrough and the encoded song sounded true to the original.

In 1991, the algorithms for MPEG-1, Audio Layers I, II and III were approved by the ISO. They were finalized in 1993 and the MPEG-1 standard was published. MPEG-1 does not adhere to an exact specification for an MP3 encoder. Because of this, a number of different MP3 encoders exist and each creates a different quality of file. MPEG-2 was published just a year later. Also in 1994, the first MP3 encoder, called l3enc, was released by the Fraunhofer Society. The Fraunhofer team chose the filename extension .mp3 in 1995. This year also saw the release of Winplay, the first real-time MP3 player, compatible with both Windows 95 and Windows 3.1.

Fraunhofer received a U.S. patent for MP3 in 1996. Around this time, music lovers and internet users began sharing MP3 files online. This was assisted in part by the increasing use of Winamp. Winamp is an MP3 player created for Nullsoft, a company founded by Justin Frankel, who created Winamp with Dmitry Boldyrev. Peer-to-peer file sharing quickly became widespread, and soon became a source of massive copyright infringements. Major record labels began filing charges against individual users and filesharing networks. However, this has not stopped peer-to-peer file sharing. To help combat this "music piracy" without alienating consumers, companies such as iTunes, Rhapsody and Amazon.com allow users to purchase music in the MP3 format.

In 2007 Radiohead sent shock waves through the corridors of the music industry when they informed fans that they could pay as much or as little as they desired for their album "In Rainbows." Today artists such as British singer/songwriter Tom Fox, offer legal free music downloads of songs, which is testimony to the fact that a growing number of today's musicians are embracing the age of the free music download.

If you are looking to upgrade your LCD monitor, here are some important considerations.

Viewing Angles: LCD monitors are rated for their visible viewing angle for both the vertical and horizontal axis. The default viewing angle is adequate for most users, unless you require a higher privacy in which case you would pick a monitor with a viewing angle close to 90 degrees.

Monitor Resolution: A LCD monitor resolution, or the number of pixels that make up the actual screen viewing area, is yet another important feature to consider when choosing a LCD monitor. Most LCD monitors come with a standard resolution of 1280x1024 pixels, this resolution should be adequate for most users.

Screen Size: The screen size is dependent on your computer usage. If you are a casual web surfer, or a small business owner then a screen size of 15" to 17" should be ideal. These sized monitors are the most economical and offer all the benefits of a LCD monitor. If however you are a student, graphic design or a multi-tasker then you should consider getting a monitor with a screen size of 19" or higher.

Luminance: The LCD monitor luminance or the measure of how much light can the monitor produce is another important feature to consider. For the casual web surfer, or the small business owner a LCD monitor with an output of 200 to 250 nits is ideal, however 500 nits or higher is recommended for users who view TV and movies on their monitor.

Contrast Ratio: The contrast ratio or the rating of how distinguishable various shades of color are on the screen, is another feature to consider. The higher the contrast ratio of the screen, the better the color representation is by the monitor.

Response Time: The LCD Response times refer to the amount of time it takes for the crystals in the LCD computer monitor to turn on and off. The lower the response time, the less of a blurring effect there will be on the screen. For the casual web surfer, or the small business owner a flat panel LCD monitor with 8 ms latency is deal, however 4ms or less is recommended for gaming users.

Keep the above factors in mind and you will be sure to get the right monitor for your needs.

Just when you feel you are worn out and tired and nothing seems to soothe your morbid mind, listening to Philippine music may save your day and makes it fine.

Music as we know, can inspire, edify or even lighten up a heavy spirit or a hackneyed heart - so don't be down, just turn on your radio and beat that frown.

You can certainly find a wholesome musical experience in an archipelago with more than seven thousand islands - the Philippines! With a touch of European, American, Spanish and indigenous cultures, Philippine music evolved with a sense of universality that goes beyond territorial boundaries.

No wonder that even foreigners appreciate Filipino music. They love to listen to it because of its blend of various ideals and identities. From the southern regions, traditional music still lives and usually played with accompanying dances during fiestas and gatherings. Or in the northern part where a lot of indigenous music could be heard.

In the Visayan regions, folk songs are still sung and what the folks there call "composo" - which is a song that tells of a story of war, of love or of any subject that are put into words and music - are usually played in local stations on Sundays or of men gathering in a nearby country store with their guitars.

Whereas the likes of Kundiman, harana and rondalla which are Spanish - influenced and are popular in the olden times, are still in existence and are played on certain occasions especially in the barrios. Harana is famous in the rural places especially to young men courting young women.

But if you are the type who likes lively and upbeat music, Philippine rock music are also in the list. Philippine hip - hop and RNB music certainly caters to those who are more inclined to soft and mellow moods.

Further on the list of Philippine music are love songs written by famous and talented Filipino artist. Songs that can be considered as classics, since they have seen through - and have become a part of - different generations.

Philippine music is unique - even though it's a mixture of various cultures - since they are composed and sung in a purely Filipino way, that is, they show how a Filipino culture is like.

The OPM or what is known as Original Pilipino Music reflects that Filipinos truly have a great passion for music. Aside from having a wonderful tune, OPM's have an informative lyrics which tell of the realities happening in our society or in other parts of the world. They don't only lift up the spirit but also they serve as venue for us to reflect - amidst the hustle and bustle of the day - that we are a part of a society where concern and care for others are greatly in need.

The likes, for example of Freddie Aguilar - whose music and songs are really meaningful and soothing to listen to - who popularize the song "Anak" tells of a bitter reality that could befall a child who is drowned in drugs.

And many more songs that we can say a truly Philippine music and has become a part of Filipinos' everyday lives.

How Well Do You Know the Project and Program Control Techniques?

2011-10-31T05:19:00.000-07:00

Multinational business entities refer to Project and Program Control Techniques (PPCT), for ensuring the success of their endeavors from various facets of Corporate Management. The non-repetitive project or program is becoming an increasingly frequent phenomenon for the last three decades in large organizations. As these projects also increase in scale, complexity, and cost, new methods for planning and controlling them have been and are being developed. The best known of the older approaches is the Gantt chart, which was developed by Henry L. Gantt.

This relatively simple chart has made a significant contribution to project management and is still a valuable and widely used control tool. It is also the foundation upon which the other, more sophisticated types of project and program control techniques: milestone scheduling, Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT), and Critical Path Method (CPM) – are based.

Milestone Scheduling: If you select a date when a certain accomplishment, decision, or event is to take place and indicate that date on the horizontal bar of a chart, you have created a milestone. The milestone date may be a date on which a decision is to be made concerning outside financing; it may be a date when announcement of the project to the trade press is planned; it may simply be a date when a thorough project progress review is scheduled. Usually, however, the milestone represents a selected date by which a certain phase of the entire project is to be implemented.

Network Analysis: PERT and CPM: Gantt charts are appropriate for scheduling a series of unrelated activities, such as separate production runs in a job shop operation. The milestone method can be used to divide major project into sub-activities so that managers can achieve greater control. Neither approach, however, can adequately deal with the interrelationships among activities or events. These interrelationships form an important aspect of more complex projects and programs in which one activity or event will often depend on the successful completion of other activities or events.

In such situations, some form of network analysis is necessary to ensure that the entire project or program is moving ahead as planned. The two major forms of network technique are Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) and Critical Path Method (CPM). The systems were developed independently, although virtually at the same time, around 1957 – 58. PERT was first developed for the U.S. Navy in connection with the Polaris weapons system and is credited with reducing the completion time of the program by two years. CPM was developed by Du Pont in order to facilitate its control of large, complex industrial projects. The two systems are similar in most essential respects.

The main difference lies in the treatment of time estimates. PERT was created primarily to handle research and development projects in which time spans are based on probabilistic estimates. CPM, on the other hand, is usually concerned with projects that the organization has had some previous experience with. Time estimates, therefore, can be made relatively accurately. The use of both PERT and CPM has spread rapidly and made a significant impact on the planning and control of projects and programs.

Both systems are most appropriate for controlling special, complex, non-repetitive projects such as development of a large weapons system, highway construction, shipbuilding, or the installation of a large-scale data processing system. However, PERT or CPM system involve considerable expense, particularly if the system is computerized. In deciding whether or not to use a system, managers must determine to what extent the project to be controlled is time-critical.

For example, projects such as reinforcing a weak dam, constructing a building, or completing contracts that include penalty payment clauses are highly time-critical. The expense of a complete CPM or PERT system would probably be justified for such projects, since these systems make it much more likely that the projects will be completed on time. In your job, are you applying these techniques? Which one and why?

What to Look For in a Guitar Teacher and How to Select the Best One for You

2011-10-21T00:19:00.000-07:00

Learning to play the guitar can be an extremely rewarding experience, but it is made even more so if you find the right teacher who is also a guide that will help you achieve your musical goals with the right resources. Choosing the right teacher can be frustrating because it's difficult to figure out which ones are exceptional; in addition to this if you choose the wrong teacher then you can end up being demotivated through no fault of your own.

I have been responsible for hiring all the instructors at my music school Starland Music Center for 30 years. I'll share with you what I've learned over the years what I consider to be the best ways to separate the "wheat from the chaff."

Teaching with a plan:

The best teachers always prepare and have a plan: it's said in teaching that for every hour of teaching you need to prepare twice as much. You should be able to tell whether you're dealing with a professional just with your first meeting - they will determine where you are, where you are trying to go and then propose a method for getting you there. Even in the first lesson they might give you exercises to evaluate where you are.

The best teachers are not afraid to tell you their methods:

You can always tell the worst teachers, because they are the ones who "wing it." If you can tell that your prospective teacher hasn't prepared for the lesson and looks like they are making up stuff on the spot - they probably are. Get away as fast as you can. With these types of teachers you won't achieve any progress, because there's no system to their teaching. If you don't realize this right from the beginning, you end up six months later feeling like you haven't progressed at all and you become very confused. You may even blame your lack of progress on some ridiculous notion that "you don't have any talent."

The best teachers stick to their plans and while they may reward you now and then by teaching you a song you really like, more likely they will find out anyway your tastes and incorporate those into later lessons when you get to that level.

Travel distance:

How to find a good teacher also depends on how far you are willing to travel for your lessons. The more consistent you are in not missing your lessons the faster you will progress - and it's much easier to be consistent if you don't have to travel too far to see your teacher. 30 minutes travel time is a good average, but only you know what you can honestly tolerate.

Abilities vs. teaching skills:

The two are not mutual (but neither are they mutually exclusive). Just because a guitarist is an amazing performer, does not mean that they could be a great teacher. In fact, it's more likely that the best teachers are the ones who are unable to perform so much because they are teaching so much. When you are a beginner, it's best to go with a teacher who is excellent at teaching you all the basics, you don't need to worry too much about how great a performer they are. But then as you advance, you can always seek out another teacher who specializes in a particular style that you like.

What you should be looking for is a teacher who is both an inspiration and someone who has traveled the hard road of being a student and comes back to show you the way.

Instructor experience:

1) One way to work out whether your prospective teacher has enough experience is to see how many students they teach. If it's true that it takes thousands of hours to learn to play an instrument, then it's also true that it takes thousands of hours to learn how to teach! Ask them:

- how many years they have taught

- how many students do they teach a week

- how long do students stay with them

But be careful, because teachers with a lot of students may also not have enough time for you or not track your progress enough.

An organized teacher who has many students is also a good choice. This means taking notes, keeping track of your progress and using some sort of register.

Personal Note: At one point I had 60 weekly 1/2 hour private students. Though I was working long hours I had no problems keeping track of each student's progress and giving them my full attention during the lesson because I had a system.

2) The level of current and past students is also something that is significant. If you are looking for beginner lessons look for a teacher who is skilled at teaching beginners. There are totally different teaching methods and styles involved in teaching different levels.

3) Age range of students. It's best to divide students into children, teenagers and adults. Look for a teacher with experience teaching students of your age range.

Training does make a difference:

Your prospective teacher should not only be trained at how to play their guitar. Ideally you want to pick a teacher who has also been taught by good teachers. Good teachers will always model their lessons on the good teachers' methods that taught them. These types of teachers will use methods and materials that worked well when they were learning and keep you away from methods that don't work.

A teacher can also be taught by a school. College graduates are likely to have training only in classical guitar as most universities do not offer programs in popular music. But many instructors that I've hired have been to schools such as Musician's Institute in L.A., Grove School Without Walls, and Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA., which do offer popular music.

The other way to learn to teach guitar is to take a course with the same name - though the only one I know of is the one I teach at the Starland Music Center using my proprietary system along with the principles and techniques of proper instruction. You can also get wonderful books on this topic (check out author Joe Livoti) and you can learn a lot from method books and testing the ideas on your students.

How To Calm Your Kids Down With Music

2011-08-18T09:26:00.000-07:00

As told by my grandmother:

As a grandmother of four grandchildren under the age of five, it’s often overwhelming when they all come over to my house for a visit. On the occasions that I have been left alone with them, babysitting or just playing with them, they often become boisterous and loudly competitive, sometimes difficult to control.

One day, anticipating their arrival, I decided to turn on some quiet, soothing music and to have it playing during their visit. I wondered if it would help keep them calmer and, hopefully, more quiet than usual, (I already had a slight headache, even before their arrival). My oldest grandson noticed the music. I asked him if he liked it, and he said yes, that it sounded like “sleepy music,” so I left it on, quietly in the background.

After about a half hour, I noticed, (happily, I might add), that the children were playing “nicely” together, and that the atmosphere was generally less noisy and more relaxed than on previous visits. And my headache, (albeit with the aid of an aspirin), was noticeably better.

Upon reflection, I considered that the change in their general behavior was largely due to the calming influence of the music. I was reluctant to challenge my hypothesis by changing to more upbeat music, as I was enjoying the peaceful atmosphere too much and didn’t want to risk it. But I was impressed with the obvious power inherent in music and how conducive it was for a peaceful experience .

When I was a music student studying Music Therapy, I learned that it is therapeutic to match a patient’s mood with music of the same or similar mood. This surprised me, because I thought that if a particular patient was, for example, depressed, then wouldn’t it follow that, in order to help the patient out of depression, it would be more helpful to play “happy’ music? Not so, according to the music therapy experts. It is apparently preferable to allow the particular mood rather than fight it, as the patient often experiences more agitation when listening to music opposite their mood.

Maybe it was a lucky coincidence that my grandchildren were calmer and more mellow than usual that day maybe the music actually matched their moods. I wonder, which actually came first their moods or the music? I think that either case is feasible: sometimes a mood might be improved upon with the judicial use of appropriate music and conversely, music can possibly aggravate a given mood. I find it interesting that music can support emotions or exacerbate them.

It was a lovely afternoon with the grand-kids. Maybe the music assisted them in achieving a more peaceful afternoon at their grandmother’s house. I know one thing, they were visibly more relaxed, more attentive to storytelling and story books and less combative and aggressive. Maybe I just got lucky that day. Perhaps I’ll test my theory further another day during another visit, but I’ll make sure that I don’t have a headache if I do.

2011-04-23T03:25:00.000-07:00

About the Author
For more ways to download songs free, visit DownloadSongsFree.Net.

The world has never seen this much media availability ever. Thanks to the Internet, sharing and downloading all sorts of media has become easier than ever. One of the most downloaded form of which is music, as proven by the impact of this popular music sharing/downloading website on the internet-savvy public and its notoriety for breaching quite a few copyright laws several years back. A few other websites offering the same kind of service have surfaced after that, some still offering free downloads but most have opted to go legitimate and charge downloads to keep safe and avoid any infringement issues, not to mentioned make good business out of it as well. However, recent applications have freed the downloaders again from the paysite blues and once more able to download songs free. Here are the 3 most common ways of downloading songs for free

The Artist's website

Almost all artists/musicians (including the independent ones) have their own websites to promote their work. During these promotions, they usually give out promo copies which may be downloaded from their websites for free. However, in most cases only 1 or 2 tracks are available for free download. If you want the other songs from the album, you would have to buy it online. This option works well if you are only after the free promo song from the album.

The Streaming Video/Music

Online streaming video websites also feature music videos. These videos may be viewed using your Internet browser. Some of these websites openly free download of their video content, but should it not, a host of online-streaming-video downloader software are available online and are also downloadable for free. Downloading and installing any of these will enable you to download streaming videos from these websites. Most of these video downloaders also come with a video format converter which will not only convert your downloaded video (usually in .FLV format) into any format you need it to be in (i.e. .AVI, .MP4, .MPEG, etc.), but it can also extract the audio from the video and convert it into an audio format (i.e. .MP3, .WAV, .3GP, etc) of your choice.

The BitTorrent file

The first 2 options will work fine if you are searching for individual songs to download. However, if you would like to download entire albums by artists, it would be best to download the album using a BitTorrent client. This will require you to download and install a BitTorrent client software such as "utorrent". After installing the software, all you need to do is open a torrent website which will help you search for the torrent file of your choice. These torrent websites work like any other search engine website: there will be a search bar for you to enter your search category and torrent files that match your search will be displayed almost instantly. Clicking on these torrent files will send the torrent file to your torrent client (utorrent, in this example) and will download it automatically. You do not have to worry about losing the download when you stop it midway for the download process can be stopped and continued at will without damaging the downloaded file. By far, this is the best way to download songs free of charge.

Just remember that when you download songs free of charge using the last 2 methods above, there is no guarantee that you will also be free from infringement cases should any of these artists conduct a campaign against these type of downloading methods and you suddenly find yourself in the middle of it.
