Over the past few months, the concepts of stripping back the superfluous, simplifying and pulling apart the true meaning of integrity have been strong personal themes. For many people, there’s a drive to again inspect old patterns that continue to run happily in the background despite years of self-examination. Perhaps under the direction of a new global energy, there’s a sense of being able to lovingly let go of those things that have served us all well on one level, yet have offered excuses to stay small on another.

I came across Don Miguel Ruiz’ “The Four Agreements” the other day and it strongly resonated with this desire to pare back; to simplify; to become more real as a participant in this world and begin operating in a more authentic way.

Liberal Party is the ruling party; Manuel Araneta Roxas has the edge when it comes in improving the Philippine economy. He wants to weld the government policies influenced by well-connected private interest to a leadership that execute all the laws of the land with impartiality and decisiveness. The treatment of rural economy as just a source of problems to recognizing farms and rural enterprises as vital to achieving food security and more equitable economic growth, worthy of re-investment for sustained productivity.

These alone could really spearhead the facets of Philippine economy in which Filipinos have more to gain in leadership in running the laws for the Philippines improvement and empowerment. Let’s not forget that Pnoy Administration had nothing to offer immediate action when times call for it. The slow action proved that the government must attend to all facets of the Philippine society by their strong will to eliminate the bad elements.

The “laglag bala” scheme by the airport personnel caused the Philippine government another problem to solve and going it through the authorities concerned. More incidents are adding every other day because of this matter.

The Presidential aspirant of Pnoy Administration, Mar Roxas condemned the people behind this scheme. He even thought that there were political agenda behind this “laglag bala” because of the APEC Summit meeting. His remarks when interviewed by the media did not sit well with the Filipinos who were tired of hearing about the so-called ‘laglag-bala’ scam. Mar Roxas said those passengers caught carrying bullets inside the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) have to take responsibility for their actions.

Again, the Senate who are carried by the scam, proposed a tighter management control at the NAIA airport while Miriam Defensor Santiago is set to file a bill that seeks to amend Republic Act (RA) 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act. The resolution increases the penalty against planting evidence, if committed by a private individual. A person found guilty of inserting, placing or attaching a bullet or a firearm with the intent of incriminating another, may be punished by imprisonment for up to 20 years.

It’s really good for the Filipinos; be it ordinary people or political persona that awareness for this issue must be addressed at once. The Aquino Administration must also extend other means to eradicate this problem before it cause to the higher level.

Last November 8, 2014 was the first year of killer Typhoon Yolanda who ravaged the Visayas region especially Tacloban. Her fury for three days damaged lives, infrastructures, livelihood and other vital points for Filipinos in that area. The aftermath saw the major devastation which needs emergency funding came from the government.

The DSWD responsibility is to ensure that the survivors get the aid needed to build their new lives. Various private and humanitarian organizations helped meet the need for temporary shelter after Yolanda. A state auditors’ report, however, points out that foreign and local donations weren’t spent quickly enough to reach survivors during the most crucial time, shortly after the storm.

After a year of relief operation done by the Pinoy Administration, still Yolanda victims in Tacloban are disgusted by ways our national leaders treated them for their support. LGUs in the Yolanda-stricken areas should be consulted in the rehabilitation efforts since local officials know better what is good for their people than any other government agency. LGUs are not given enough roles in the rebuilding efforts. .

It’s a fact that government officials are slow in responding for emergency cases like this killer natural disaster. Most likely, they have experience in helping devastated Filipinos in the past. So, planning, coordination among government agencies and local officials, proper inventory and distribution of relief goods are crucial in ensuring that aid reaches the intended beneficiaries immediately.

To make sure that funds are immediately used to assist survivors of calamities, the implementing agencies must come up with a program of work for the efficient use of disaster funds.

Thus, our transportation system along these many roads of Metro Manila are not capable of giving minimum service to the riding public because of mismanagement of our leaders. The Aquino Administration are trying their very best to give solutions to these problems, but they cannot decipher the immediate right application that could lessen the burden of the Filipino people especially in the cities like Metro Manila.

Why this present administration could not altogether plan and compose their resources, take long-term solutions to these problems and anticipate Philippine Development 5 to 10 years from now? Palace officials are giving contradicting statements on the real stand of President Benigno Aquino on the Cha-cha even after he expressed his agreement with the idea of term extension in a televised interview. Since he assumed the presidency, Aquino has opposed moves, including by his political allies, to amend the Charter, which proponents say are intended to remove obstacles to direct foreign ownership of businesses and resources.

Past administrations have also pushed for Charter change but these attempts have met with widespread opposition out of fears the real intention is to lift term limits to allow incumbent officials to hang on to their posts.

Communication is the art/ science of transferring a thought/ idea/ information from the mind of one complex human being to the mind of one or more complex human being(s). For communication to be effective, it must be a two-way process.

A) Dynamics of Interpersonal Communication

1. Facts: are both people communicating about the same set of facts? Try to separate the facts from thoughts or feelings.

2. Interpretations, Thoughts or Perceptions: Each person interprets a fact differently based on their belief system, personality, values and experience.

3. Feelings: how we are feeling, our current mood and frame of mind, etc can sub-consciously affect decisions and thoughts.

4. Intentions, Needs or Wants: hidden agendas; are we looking for comfort, clarification, information or simply a chance to interact? We judge ourselves on our intentions.

5. Actions: choice of words (is the intent to create harm?) + tone of voice + non-verbal speech = body language, posture, eye contact, facial expressions, etc.
"The medium is the message" => the way the message is delivered is the message itself.

6. Self: The communication center, which includes the issue, topic or conflict at hand, has been "filtered" by the facts, interpretations, thoughts, feelings, intentions, and choices of behavior / actions.

B) Listening and Feedback

Did I say what I meant to say? - Invite feedback to clarify communication.

Someone who's not listening lets their mind drift and is already preparing the next argument or opposing thought; inaccurate feedback or limited eye contact.

Listening is an active, not a passive process. When two people argue, they only hear "what they want to hear", not what's actually said. This equates to the accusation of "not listening". Most couples start arguing and within 5 minutes are arguing about the way they are arguing.

Don't argue when you're angry - you will not be able to listen objectively. Give yourself time to cool down and then broach the subject when you are in a more reasonable frame of mind.

It's important to give feedback - checking and confirming. Did I understand you correctly? Is this what you mean? I heard you say this: am I right? Feedback can be verbal / non-verbal e.g. a nod, smile, silence or a cold shoulder. No feedback is in itself a form of feedback.

If the words and actions contradict each other, it is better to believe the actions!

C) Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution can either be Constructive or Destructive.
Destructive Style - hinders or inhibits the conflict resolution process:

Giving in (passive, submissive)
Avoidance (denial, withdrawal)

Constructive Style - trying to minimize the issues and avoiding the difficulties in resolving the problems:
Compromise (meet halfway, understanding)
Accommodate (open discussion, communication without confrontation)
Partnership (solutions, forgiveness, honesty)

When trying to resolve conflicts, try to clarify your goals, as you will probably share many of the same goals despite of your differences. Avoid bargaining, as this may lead to each party taking a rigid position which in turn can flare tempers.

When resolving conflicts, remember that their causes may run deep. Sweeping issues under the carpet isn’t going to work in the long term, as old baggage will be brought up each time an argument starts. Try to fully resolve each issue as it comes along. You may find the following method useful:

1. Ask the other person for their feelings. Your conflict probably isn’t about the issue that caused it to start in the first place. Don’t forget that your goal is sorting out the problem, not winning an argument!

2. Ask the other person to define the problem. Stick to solving one problem at a time, that way you can understand each problem as the other person sees it.

3. Express your own feelings. Be careful to word them carefully, for example use phrases such as: I feel, rather than, I think you…

4. Define the problem as you see it. As your feelings come out, the solution may become clearer. Remember that by you listening to the other person; you will have set the tone for them to listen to you.

5. Create multiple solutions. Don’t go back to your original agenda. Aim to find alternative or creative solutions that reduce emotions and tension.

6. Rate the possible solutions. Remember that no one can force an unacceptable solution on the other.

7. Combine and create a mutually acceptable solution. Create something acceptable to both parties, if this doesn’t work, go back to step 1 and ensure both parties are being totally honest.

8. Be sure both parties agree to work towards resolving the issue.

Troubleshooting For Problems in Communication

Control or Power Issues: Effective communication cannot take place if one person has "control" over the other or where there is not mutual respect and equality of relationship. To stay in control leads to relational isolation as the underdog reacts in anger at being manipulated or belittled.

Triangulation: Do not bring in a third party to avoid direct confrontation. If you have a problem with someone, go directly to that person. Don't dump your accusations on mutual friends or your children in the hope of winning support to balance the scales in your favor - it leads to more substantial and long-lasting damage, especially when a child is used as a weapon between parents.
