Driving is usually a passion of all speed enthusiasts. For some people, driving is the height of their craziness. These crazy guys need extra performance from their vehicles. Not every cars and SUV's can deliver the best in terms of speed, control, reliability along with security of person on driving seat. There are a few names of Muscle Cars in the series of heavy duty cars, and one of them is Mustang Shelby GT. The Mustang Shelby GT series are heavy duty roaring cars known for the ultimate in performance and speed. And here is the history of Mustang Shelby GT.

1965-1966

The first GTs were Shelby modified K-Code 289 cubic [4.7 liter] V8 Fastbacks that had their power increased from 271 HP up to 306 HP. Shelby ordered 252 units of 1965 Fastbacks for his conversion into 1966 Shelby GT350. The project itself began in August of 1964 and in September the first Shelby GT350s were born. The public unveil was done on January 27 of 1965. Shelby GT350 also featured Hooly carburetor, Cobra valve covers, special Cobra hi-rise intake manifold, 4-speed manual transmission, side exhaust pipes, Wimbledon white body color with 2 stripes and no back seats, because of SCCA's requirements [2-door coupes only]. All in all, there were 562 Shelby GT350 street legal and 37 GT360R units built in 1965. The Shelby GT350R were built for races only.

The 1966 production had 2378 GT250s built where 4 of them were special order convertibles for Shelby himself. Some say, there were 6 of these convertibles, but on 4 correct VINs are discovered. Shelby struck a deal with the Hertz Corporation in 1965 in order to build a special line of 1001 GT350H V8s for "rent a racer" program, which helped Shelby to expose Shelby Mustangs across the country.

1967-1968

In 1967 Mustang Gt350 carried over with 289 cubic aluminum Cobra V8. Regular Mustangs could get 320 HP power by installing 4-barrel carburetor. Of course, Shelby went further and the new Shelby GT500 model was built in 1967 too. It was equipped with reworked 428 cubic [7 liter] Police Interceptor engine with cast-aluminum intake manifold [from Ford's 427] and twin Hooley 4-barrel carburetors to get 355 HP. GT500 had a 4-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission, power steering and air conditioning. The body had new nose, functional hood scoop, side body air intakes. The 1968 Shelby GT500KR [King of the Road] had 428 cubic Cobra Jet V8 engine and developed suspiciously low 335 HP.

1969-1970

Shelby terminated the agreement with Ford in 1969, but he still had a little bit of his impact in 69-70 GT model range. Actually, the 1970 GTs were 1969 Shelby leftovers and that is why 1970 GTs were still Shelbys. The GT350 and GT 500 got quite a big facelift change. 1969-1970 Shelby GT350 got a 351 cubic [5. liter] V8 engine, while the GT500 got its 428 cubic [7 liter] V8 muscle. Transmission choice was the same: 3-speed automatic or 4-speed manual.

2006-2008

2006-Ford-Mustang-Shelby-GT - After Ford revived the 5th generation Mustang, Shelby created a special edition 2006 Shelby GT-H which was the offspring of the original 1966 Shelby GT350H "rent and race" muscle car. Only about 500 units were built. Those were equipped with 320 HP 4.6 liter GT V8 engine, 90 mm cold air intake kit, X-pipe, performance suspension, 5-speed automatic transmission, etc. The convertible Shelby GT-H was offered to rent in 2007. 2008-barrett-jackson-shelby-gt - There was one more special edition of 100 units unveiled in 2008 - the Barrett-Jackson Shelby GT. The Shelby pony delivers 319 HP from a Ford Racing V8 and is equipped with 5-speed manual gearbox that has Hurst short-throw shifter or a 5-speed automatic. The cars have special tuned dampers, unique sway bars inside and 18 inch alloys, Shelby Cobra hood scoop, Lemans stripes and fully black interior.

The 2006 Shelby GT500 uses 5.4 liter supercharged V8 and develops 500 HP. It also features 6-speed Tremec manual transmission, has some suspension tuning done and rides on 18-inch wheels. These cars were build in collaboration of SVT and Carroll Shelby for 3 years only, but there were about 30.000 units built. The King of the Road model was unveiled back in 2007, in NY auto show. The Anniversary 2008 Shelby GT500KR has the same engine as GT500, but due to functional cold air intake and unique calibration this 32 valve 5.4 liter supercharged V8 engine develops as much as 540 HP [40 HP more than GT500]. The KR Mustang features carbon fiber hood with functional scoops and vents, unique carbon fiber splitter, functional brake cooling ducts, SVT-tuned suspension, some more parts from Ford Racing.

Since 2007, the Terlingua Team offers a special package for the V6 Mustangs, that includes "serious performance enhancements and striking visual cues". The package will, of course, include the Shelby serial number...2007 Ford Shelby GT500 Red Stripe Appearance Package. If You already have GT500 and still feel unsatisfied, You may sent it to Shelby's Special Performance Plant in Las Vegas and have it rebuilt into Super Snake. This rebuilt SS features some special badging, new Alcoa wheels, ram-air SS hood, stripes, splitters, 6-piston Bear brakes and many other performance features including the 5.4 Liter Kenne Bell twin-screw supercharged engine that develops 605 or 725 HP [no warranty for this one].

2010-2011

Along with the 2010 Mustang facelift came the new GT500. It had the same 5.4 liter engine but the power was increased up to 540 HP by adding cold air intake [similar to KR's]. SVT retuned the suspension a bit by adding 19 inch wheels. The 2011 Shelby GT500 will get an engine update - it'll be the new 5.4 aluminum V8 that is 102 pounds lighter, and more powerful - 550 HP. The car stance is lowered by 11/8 millimeters in front/rear. The steering is assisted by new electric system, external design includes SVT performance package, 19/20 inch front/rear wheels, optional glass roof, etc. Due to 45th Anniversary in 2011 the legendary 1965 Shelby GT350 special Mustang edition was unveiled by Shelby. 5.0 liter small block V8 will be fitted with Ford's Racing [FR] supercharger to gain 500 HP, FR suspension, 6-speed manual transmission, Borla exhaust, 6 piston Baer brakes, 19 inch Cragar wheels, front splitter, functional hood scoop, redesigned tail lights, new dashboard for interior, etc.

Frankly, it looks like Shelby started to loose its "sought after" feature by modifying "simple" Mustangs into Shelby ones in their Shelby Mod Shops and listing them in Shelby registry as pure-blooded. We do expect that only the real production Shelbys will maintain and even increase their historical and financial value in the future.

The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport 2012

The Jeep Wrangler has long been
known as the vehicle of choice for serious off-roaders everywhere. That
is why a Jeep Wrangler was named "4x4 of the Decade" by Four Wheeler
Magazine and "best new car for off-roaders" in 2010 by Cars.com. After
my test drive of the new 2012 Jeep Wrangler unlimited Sport today I
think it is a vehicle of serious consequence for highway and city
drivers as well.

In 2011 Chrysler unleashed its V6 Pentastar
engine as an option in many of its Dodge and Chrysler vehicles. It
entered the Jeep line-up in 2011 as the V6 alternative to the V8 Hemi in
the Grand Cherokee. To the surprise of many this vehicle delivered
horsepower like a V8 and fuel economy like a 4 cylinder. In 2012 Jeep
has put this successful power plant in its Wranglers, replacing the 3.8 L
V6 that replaced the old inline 6 in 2007. Many Jeep aficionados have
long-awaited the arrival of the new 2012 with its Pentastar engine and
its 285 hp replacing the 202 hp 3.8L. In addition, the new motor is
paired with a 5 speed automatic transmission which delivers smoother
performance and better fuel economy.

On a warm September morning I
finally got the opportunity to drive the new 2012 Wrangler Sport
Unlimited and see for myself how it compared to previous models. If you
haven't driven a Jeep lately, the first thing you will note is the
reduction of noise, vibration and improved handling (NVH). This
initiative made leaps and bounds for the 2011 model and continues in
2012. You will also notice the improvement in pick-up as you merge into
traffic. At 202 HP the 2011 had no problem with speed. At 285HP the 2012
not only has speed but the smooth pick-up to get you there. From a dead
stop the new 5 speed automatic gears up smoothly to cruising speed with
no lag, no excess vibration or hesitation. In no time I was up to speed
only to find myself quickly stuck in traffic. Large slow moving trucks
followed construction equipment and everywhere mid day traffic filled in
the road to create congestion--not an ideal condition for a test drive
but a reality in modern city driving. Although you may buy yourself a
Jeep Wrangler with visions of off roading and rough country trails, the
truth is that the majority of miles are put on most Wranglers in
situations much like I was experiencing today--city driving.

In an
effort to escape gridlock I turned off the busy route and headed down
side streets through an industrial area just to keep moving the Wrangler
forward. The roads were rough and barricaded with recent resurfacing
patches which meant sharp turns weaving around traffic and barricades.
The Wranglers tight turning radius and responsive handling made this the
ideal vehicle for scooting through road work during construction
season. And if you live in a northern city like Winnipeg, there are only
two seasons, winter and construction.

I also reset the fuel
economy indicator prior to leaving the main road during this portion of
the test drive. I was pleasantly surprised to see the fuel economy
hovering around 11L/100km. Environment Canada rates this vehicle at
13.2L/100km city and 10.0 highway. This is an improvement from last
years rating of 14.5 city and 10.0 highway. The difference in city
driving can be attributed to the new powerful Pentastar engine matched
with the new 5 speed automatic. My city mileage didn't spike until I
left the industrial area and reentered traffic, and with it the burst of
acceleration to get up to 80 kph as quick as possible. Overall this
vehicle averaged about 15L/100km for my little test drive.

The
particular vehicle that I drove had a soft top--a great feature
regardless of where you live. If you live in a northern city you want to
take advantage of as much summer as possible and there is no better way
to do that than with the top down, or as in this case with the sunrider
top open. With a release of two clips on the front, the top flips back
and is strapped in place giving the driver and passenger full access to
the elements without having to remove the whole top, a great option for a
short ride on a 28 degree C day in September. And unlike other
convertibles, the Jeep Wrangler can be purchased with soft top, hard
top, or both and changed seasonally as you prefer.

The other thing
that I loved about the Jeep Wrangler Sport Unlimited is that it is a
true 4 door with seating for 5 plus luggage, groceries or whatever. And
with the longer wheel base, this vehicle has an exceptionally smooth
almost car like ride. The Unlimited has been around since 2007 but now
in addition to being a rugged off-roader, Jeep Wrangler is now even more
than ever a rugged family vehicle capable of delivering city and
highway performance, decent fuel economy, and still delivering you to
the heart of the wilderness if you desire.

Are you looking for a car, with a sporty look, but don't want to
spend buckets of cash on a sporty automobile that tends to be very
expensive for the pocket, then you should think about a hybrid sports
car. These vehicles are very different from a normal sports vehicle. The
normal sports car is not very fuel efficient and after spending a
fortune to own a sporty car, you also have to spend heavily on the fuel
as well. To overcome all your problems, various companies have invented
hybrid sports cars. Generally it is believed that hybrid cars are not
very fast on the road, but these hybrid cars were designed keeping all
these factors in mind.

The hybrid sports car was made by taking
various important factors into account. The first factor is the fuel
efficiency factor. There are people who wish to buy a trendy automobile,
but the factor that refrains them from doing so, is the heavy amount of
expenditure of fuel and insurance. Most sporty vehicles have large
motors and a sleek body to support their extreme output for high speeds.
The reason for this is these automobiles use enormous amount of fuel
because their engines are very heavy. But a hybrid sport car was
designed to overcome this drawback. These hybrid cars have a
comparatively light body and smaller engines. With this kind of
structure and engine the hybrid cars prove to be very efficient fuel
users. Again the other factor which would concern the prospective buyer
is the comparative slow speed of hybrid cars. This factor has also been
given consideration and hybrid sports cars have a feature of fine speed
attached to it. The hybrid sports cars are also eco- friendly, this
means these cars do not emit harmful gases which cause global warming.
By using such cars we can assure a better future and a cleaner
environment for the coming generation. The fact that hybrid cars are
half battery operated makes these cars a good option with people opting
for fuel efficient automobiles.

It is believed, that the biggest
drawback with hybrid sports car is the cost factor, but if we compare
the cost and fuel efficiency then we see that these vehicles would
provide us with more long term benefits then a non hybrid car. There are
many advantages attached to these hybrid cars. This is a car which can
fulfill all your dreams. The car of tomorrow is here. This car holds all
the aspects of a good sporty vehicle. It will provide you with
assurance of quality and money. There are very limited manufacturers
like Toyota, Honda etc which are manufacturing hybrid sports cars. The
fact is that, if more of these cars would be in demand then the supply
would also increase which would eventually reduce the cost factor. It is
very important for the people to know the various positive aspects of
these cars. Every now and then there are more features added to these
cars. They are not only beautiful, trendy, smart and elegant but also
hold all the attributes to be called the car of the next generation.
There is a car available in the market which would satisfy all your
desires of owning a sporty car and that is hybrid sports car.

For you to find the most reliable insurance for your sports car, you better understand all the facts and concerns related to it. Based
on figures provided by the insurance companies, statistics show that
sports cars are more prone to collisions and road accidents. So,
insurance companies also have more demands from the customers who would
like to insure a sports car. Because of that, finding the most reliable
car insurance for your car can be quite challenging.

The reliable
car insurance for your sports car could be more expensive compared to
other types of cars because the value of the car is higher, there is a
larger engine, it is more prone to accidents and the spare parts are
expensive too. So, insurance companies require higher payment for the
premium of cars so they can also provide the amount that will be needed
if in case your car gets involved in an unwanted situation. Also, sports
cars are very enticing for the car thieves. Meaning, it easily catches
the eyes of those who steal cars. Hence, insurance companies should be
able to cover for this. Since, the value of the car is relatively more
expensive than other cars, they have to ask for higher payment and fees
too.

The age of the driver is also a factor. Most sports car
owners and drivers are young. That is why they also have to pay for a
much higher premium. Young drivers are recognized by insurance companies
as the most risky drivers. They are the ones that are usually involved
in many car accidents and they also have a higher tendency to file for
insurance claims.

If you want to reduce the amount for the
insurance of your sports car, there are some things that you could do.
First you can increase the protection against theft. If your car has
safety measures like alarms, anti-theft locks and all other security
devices, the insurance company may reduce the amount of premium. The
harder it is for thieves to steal you car, the higher your premium
discount would be. You could also drop off the collision and
comprehensive coverage benefit of your insurance. Just pay for the
liability coverage but you should be prepared to pull the money right
from your pocket in case your car gets vandalized. Also, look for the
membership discount which your insurance company may offer you.

It
will all be a matter of properly doing research and keeping yourself
informed about the important details concerning the insurance for your
sports car.

Mercedes has long produced some of the most lavish and
undoubtedly head-turning cars on the road. In recent years, the Mercedes
SLR McLaren was known as one of the finest sports cars on the planet.
Not a company to rest on their laurels, Mercedes quickly went to work
again to produce the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG to replace their
award-winning model. Sales are almost ready to begin for the SLS
AMG in Europe, with the US market getting their taste in 2011. The price
for this Benz is expected to be in excess of $200,000 USD, making it
one of the more expensive sports cars on the road, although still behind
other big names like Ferrari and Lamborghini.

Mercedes
immediately picked up a lot of recognition for this model when it was
first unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show in Germany. Although it's
not technically out on the road yet, it is already the safety car for
the Formula One Championship series, and it is also already featured in
the PlayStation 3 videogame Gran Turismo 5. The design of the SLS
AMG is supposedly an update to one of the Mercedes' all-time models in
the 300SL Gullwing. The short body of this car and the passenger
placement nearer the real axle make it both compact and easier to handle
at higher speeds than other similar models. The wing door set-up is
akin to Lamborghini's (or Benz's Gullwing) doors; and the doors are
fully detachable.

Currently, Mercedes-Benz is planning on
releasing four separate versions of the SLS AMG. The first is going to
be a coupe-style vehicle with the abovementioned door features. A
gold-colored version of this car made its global debut at the Dubai
International Auto Show. From 2011 to 2013, Mercedes will release
their second version of the SLS AMG - a soft-top roadster with basic
doors. There is also set to be an electric version of the car, although
critics are already lining up to speak out against an electric sports
car, as it cannot possibly perform as well.

The final version of
the SLS AMG Mercedes plans to release is the Black Series. This will be
the most daring of all four models, as the Black Series will be
extremely trimmed down and is expected to have a reduced overall weight
of 661 pounds. As far as performance goes, the Mercedes SLS AMG is
a powerful car for its size. The M 159 V8 engine has a displacement of
378.835 cubic inches and redlines at 7200 RPM. Handling the task of
proper gearing will be a standard transmission - a 7-speed dual-clutch
semi-automatic transmission with a lightweight carbon construction and
multiple driving modes. This Mercedes can definitely get up and
go. It's able to reach a speed of 60 MPH in only 3.8 seconds, and it has
an electronically limited speed of 197 MPH (although the car is able to
go much faster in theory). Carbon-ceramic disc brakes with 40% weight
reduction are in place to slow the Benz down.

The Aston Martin DB4 arrived in 1958 and represented the finest
contemporary interpretation of the Gran Turismo theme. A magnificent
synthesis of the talents at the firm's Feltham works and the Italian
Touring styling house, the DB4 was, during its five years of production,
the best selling model which paved the way for the even more successful
Aston Martin DB5 & DB6 succeeding models.

The story of the
DB4's development really began in 1950 when John Wyer started at the
Feltham works as competitions manager moving from his post as managing
director of sports-car specialists Monaco Engineering. Another 1950
recruit was design draftsmen Harold Beach, whose previous career had
included spells at the Barker Coach building Company and Garner
Strausler Mechanization, who built commercial vehicles as well as
ancillary equipment.
It was in 1964 that Beach began working on a
DB2 series replacement, which was to be titled "DB4", the DB3 being one
of the firm's sports racers. Known as Project 114 it had a perimeter
chassis frame with a sophisticated (for its time) de Dion rear axle
employing parallel trailing links, the lower ones connected to laminated
torsion bars. At the front end of the car Beach introduced wishbone and
coil independent front suspension where the DB2 by contrast had a
trailing arm system. A 3-Liter version of the then current twin-cam six
was employed and Frank Feely designed a traditional suitable closed
body, not dissimilar to that of the DB2.

Significant changes were
made to the specifications in 1956 with the appointment of John Wyer as
general manager. Previously Mr. Wyer had held title and position as
technical director. Beach was later to remember Wyer's promotion as one
of the utmost and greatest lasting significant factors in the DB4's
development as giving a "true sense of direction and purpose to the
project" at Feltham.
The first modification of the concept came
with the decision to dispense with the Lagonda engine and replace it
with a purpose built Aston Martin unit. It perpetuated the twin overhead
camshaft six-cylinder theme and in its production form had square 92 mm
x 02 mm dimensions which gave the power plant a capacity displacement
of 3670 cc. In its starting out point, in its original format the
mechanical engineer designer Tadek Marek specified a cast-iron engine
block, but this was subsequently upgraded to aluminum with chrome
vanadium wet cylinder liners. The power plant head was of the same
materials with valves essentially at 80 degree included angle, while at
the other end of the engine was a robust seven-bearing crankshaft. In
this form the engine developed a full 2400 bhp at 5700 rpm.
The DB
was announced in October 1958 to a rapturous reception overall so much
so that it immediately received the moniker "Aston Marvel." The racing
mock up the 3 Liter DB III had a top speed in the ranges of 120 mph (
193 km) yet the top speed of the DB4 - which was of course a high end
retail production unit - was an amazing near 140 mph ( 225 kph). What a

Meet the new 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and experience the
thrill that a top notch SUV offers, without actually burning holes in
your pocket. Mitsubishi plans on positioning this car at the
bottom end of Outlander line-up. Even though it shares the platform with
the larger Outlander, it has some key design differences, and
improvement in capabilities. The new Outlander varies the space a
lot better when compared to the earlier outgoing Outlander before the
facelift was given. Speaking with respect to cabin quality, you are
stepping into the world of tranquility when you take a long drive in the
new 2011 Outlander Sport.

Under the Hood

2011
Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is equipped with a 2.0-liter inline-four
engine that delivers 148 hp and 145 pound-feet of torque. The
transmission offered in the ES is a 5-speed manual. A Continuously
Variable Transmission (CVT) is available on the SE models. On the SE
trim, front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional.
As with the regular Outlander, AWD models feature 3- driver-selectable
modes to optimize traction.

Pros

• Aggressive styling

• Smooth & quiet ride

• Standard voice-activation system, and

• Affordable price

Cons

• Indifferent engine power

• Longer braking distances, and

• Limited cargo capacity

Performance

In
performance testing, a manual transmission equipped model speeds from 0
to 60 mph in 8.8 seconds. That's a reasonably quick time, but with the
more commonly installed CVT we expect the Sport to turn in just average
performance.

Safety

The standard safety features include:

• Side-impact airbags for the front seats

• All-disc antilock brakes

• Side curtain airbags for the first and second rows

• Electronic stability system

Gas Mileage

2011
Outlander Sport edition provides a good fuel economy of 25 mpg in the
city roads and 31 mpg on the highway with the standard manual gearshift,
while the CVT offers 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highways.

On
the whole, the new Outlander Sport is a great SUV that comes at a
reasonable starting price tag of $21995, which goes up to $27795. You
don't just get great comfort, and interior sophistication but nimble
handling, decent gas mileage, and all the goodies that you get in other
SUVs in the segment, but at a significantly lower price tag.

disagreement between the accelerator and the brake allowing the car to
stop.

There has been loads of press coverage on the release of this
car, with a lot of focus on Victoria Beckham's involvement in the design
of the trim and interior. This may be enough to make female drivers in
particular quite excited, but there is more to this car than celebrity
involvement to get excited about. It is frequently being referred
to as 'the new baby Range Rover' but it's not just smaller in size
(which does make it easier to park, always a plus!) The Evoque is also
cheaper than the average Range Rover - the lead-in price is under £30k
and goes up to around £45K, which is over half the price of the 'big'
Range Rover. It is also greener with CO2 emissions between less than
130g/km and 199g/km. This car is the perfect choice for those who are
both economically and environmentally conscientious.

The Evoque is
available in both 2WD and 4WD, and also 3 and 5 door models. Plus it's
available in 12 different colours, with 16 contrasting interiors,
various trim levels, and the potential for a panoramic glass roof. There
are numerous combination's available to you, which can be tailored to
your budget, taste and needs. The petrol alternative only comes in 4WD
automatic form and is only available with the Dynamic trim which costs
from £38,995. All of this encourages drivers to opt for the greener
diesel versions and why not? With more miles to the gallon than petrol,
cars fuelled by diesel are looking more and more economically
attractive.

The design of the Evoque has impressed the motoring
world to such a degree that it has been awarded Car Design News
Production Car Design of the Year 2010 which was presented to the Land
Rover Design Director the Geneva Motor Show in 2011. Not surprising as
this is a total change from Land Rover's normal style; introducing a
coupe version is definitely seeing the Range Rover as a fashionable
choice, not just a practical choice. So for female drivers everywhere,
listen up! Range Rover's aren't just for men or farmers, they're for
everyone.

Victoria Beckham's designs add to the sophistication
that this car has, and she has clearly also brought along her experience
as a busy, working mother to produce a stylish yet practical everyday
car. Her eye for style combines luxury fabrics with trendy contrasting
colour choices. The brilliant, innovative car design that
accompanies her influence gives drivers an exciting new choice when
considering buying an SUV. So think about choosing the Evoque as your
next car; Land Rover has branched out to give the average driver a car
that ticks all the right boxes.

What defines the term sports car and why are we so fascinated with them. Is it simply the flowing curves of the body design, the massive power output of the high revving engines or could it even be the distinctive throaty musical note of the exhaust pipes. Everyone will have a different opinion on what they think makes sports cars special and for the reasons why we love them so much. Even people who say they are impractical or unnecessary cannot help but to turn and look when one drives past displaying its beautiful contours hinting at the power hidden under the perfectly painted panels.

Since the development of motorized vehicles a small select group of individuals have always had the undying fascination of designing and building them bigger, more powerful and faster than they either needed to be or really should be with any regard to safety. This was no different with the motor car industry, from its relative simple and sluggish beginnings the car quickly developed into a very useful mode of transport and working tool. For some this new way to transport us around turned into an obsession of power and speed and welcomed the age of the racing cars and sports cars.

To begin with motor vehicles were built for more functional than aesthetically pleasing reasons and their ability to carry both people and heavy loads is what drove the designers and manufacturers forward. Humans though have an eye for beauty and a thirst for power and speed, combining these attributes the birth of the sports cars was inevitable. As new developments occurred in the early motor industry a small number of designers, builders and drivers pushed the motor car to its limits on race tracks to test its abilities against other manufacturers vehicles. These races fuelled the next generation of cars and drivers. As engines became more powerful the ability to race these machines began to push the designs and needs to new levels this quite often was at the expense of someone's life.

Big powerful engines were placed into fragile frames and pushed to the limit often with dire consequences to drivers and spectators. But humans have a need to go faster and faster and this drove these brave and quite often reckless early pioneers to design better and more powerful machines and this began the start of the new age of the modern motor car. Safety was usually an after thought if it came up at all, the main focus was pushing the machines and drivers to their limits and beyond if possible. The engines power output quickly out grew the motor cars ability to handle these increases and the designers had to rethink the chassis and suspensions limitations. As with in the aircraft industry the designs of planes and engines regularly changed along with the abilities and reliability of the aircraft, the motor cars began to evolve along the same lines with new ideas and breakthroughs in technologies incorporating aerodynamics to help reduce drag and stronger building materials for chassis and bodywork.

Developing test vehicles purely for racing was the beginning of what we now class as the sports car. After the Second World War a new breed of sports car began to emerge. The once very high-priced and hard to obtain race bred cars that only the most wealthy and enthusiastic owners could secure began to evolve into a more accessible vehicle with the additional comforts and road functionalities, and what was even more important, a more affordable price tag making them more accessible to the average owner and driver. The sports cars had taken their first steps from the exclusive domain to main stream availability. Over the next few years as advancements were made on and off the racing circuit designs began their slow transformation into the popular modern shapes of today's models. Many famous names have added their own distinctions to the sports car moulds and most can be easily identified by pure shape alone even today.

The Top Three Best Bentleys Ever Made

With its impeccable styling and beautiful interiors crafted from the finest materials of the earth, Bentley are in a league of their own. They are considered to be the ultimate driving machine, each vehicle oozing class and prestige. Over the years they have pushed the boundaries of luxury, with models complete with telephones, televisions and even a fridge to keep that bottle of expensive champagne crisp and cold. Here is a list of some of the greatest vehicles the company has graced the earth with.

The Bentley Speed Six

First rolling off the production line in 1926, the company took the original 6½ litre model and gave it a bit more firepower. This supercharged version became the Bentley's most successful racing ever, driven by legendary driver Woolf Barnato dominating nearly all the podium spots at the 24 hour Le Mans race in 1929 and 1930. In March of 1930, the car was also tested in a more challenging scenario. While at dinner in Cannes, Barnato bet £100 that his speed six could get to his London club before the famous blue train could reach Calais. The car kept up its part of the bargain, reaching the finish line just four minutes before the train got to the French Port. Barnato collected his winnings; however the fines he received for illegally racing on French roads were substantially more than £100.

Bentley Continental

The Continental was first conceived back in 1952 and targeted towards the domestic home market. It had the same engine capacity as the original R-Type, just with an increased gear ratio and modified exhaust manifolds and induction. Times have significantly shifted since then, with the modern model becoming a symbol of wealth and prestige. In 2009, the Bentley Continental Supersports was unveiled at the Geneva Motor show. It was a revolutionary concept, being able to run on both petrol and bio-fuel. Its 6.0 litre threw out a whopping 621bhp and could reach a top speed of 204mph.All this came at quite a price, starting from a staggering £163,000.

Bentley Mulsanne

The name of this model lies deep in the history of Bentley's successes in racing, with 'the Mulsanne Straight' being the section of the Le Mans circuit where cars could reach their highest speeds. In 1982, the model was born, promising to combine impeccable performance with unimaginable comfort, the ultimate driving machine. The original model had a 6750cc V8 engine and all features just a 3 speed transmission.

The model equivalent is deemed among the most lavish and luxurious vehicles on the market, an experience in it self just to sit inside one. Owners don't tend to drive it themselves; they more commonly have a chauffeur. This gives the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the journey. The Mulsanne has been given a revamp for 2012, with the cabin featuring 17 different leathers, a flip down television, I-pads, privacy glass and even an executive telephone.

A Brief History of the Classic Porsche 911

The Porsche 911 has always been up there with the best when it comes to ferociously fast, 2-door sports coupe. Over the years while the exquisite styling has remained, the engine and interior have adapted and transformed into the digital age. Here is a quick look at how the car has become such a success.

The first 911 was built back in 1963, it was aimed to be more powerful, bigger and more comfortable than the Porsche 356. The layout was revolutionary, with a new air-cooled engine in the back instead of the front of the car. Three years later saw the introduction of the "911S". The engines power was booted from 128bhp to 160bhp, together with adding a rear spoiler for extra grip. This was also the first model where the infamous 5 spoke alloy wheels were made available, a design that would become a symbol of the 911 legacy. The 911ST was produced for racing, with a 2.4 litre engine producing 8000rpm. These vehicles exploded out of the blocks, and experienced success at the Daytona 6 hours, the Sebring 12 hours and the 1000km Nürburgring races.

As Porsche tweaked the car with modifications and changes, many other models were born along the way. The most significant of these were the Carrera RS (racing sport), considered to be the greatest collector's item of all the 911 fleet. Born in 1973, the model was more an even more explosive version of the 911S, governed by its larger 2.7 litre engine that developed 210bhp. A revamped stronger spoiler was fitted, along with larger brakes and larger wheels.

1974 saw the introduction of the 911 turbo. The original models did have their problems, while it had incredible acceleration, the company needed to quickly address the difficult handling and severe turbo lag. The turbo legacy lasted for 15 years, with the last being solitary model to acquire an impressive five-speed gearbox. As the original script was changed one final time in 1983 when the 3.2 Carrera was launched. The most powerful model could do the 0-60 test in 5.7 seconds with top out at a speed of 150 mph. this was down to the new 3.2 engine featuring higher domed pistons to significantly increase the engine ratio.

The success of the classic 911 was marked with two special models, the 'Commemorative Edition' model in 1988 and the Anniversary Edition; marking the production of 250,000 Porsche 911 and the models' 25th birthday respectively.

The Mythical 1955 Ford Thunderbird's Origins

When America fell in love with the Thunderbird back in 1954 it was a lively two seater. Yet the Ford Thunderbird has continued to evolve into many different auto market segments over its lifespan and miles of the product. Yet nothing seems to hold T-Bird fans attention and rapt attention at the original 1955 "bird"."Thunderbird" is undoubtedly a fine name for a motor car, with its connotations of power, flight with just a hint of mystery. Yet Ford Thunderbirds is also a truly American car badge and label, the icon being a magical one for the Pueblo Indians of the South-West United States. That is more than appropriate because the "T-bird" was and still remains the essence itself of the American car illustrating over it more than 50 year most of the foibles as well as many of the strengths of that particular breed. Every story on the Thunderbird begins with the idea that the car was conceived as an "answer" to the Chevrolet Corvette. This is not entirely true, for both designs evolved in response to the growing demand in the post-war American market for cars with more style and performance, cars best typified by the stunning Jaguar XK120.

The birth of the T-bird was surely hurried along by the introduction of the Corvette. One story among the many holds that Louis D. Crusoe, vice-president of design for Ford and George Walker then a design consultant for the company saw a prototype for the Corvette at the 1953 Paris Motor Show. Crusoe told Walker that he liked it, and Walker replied that "We have something like that going." As with most innovations of mankind innovations are often being dreamed up by not one person or group, but often by a number simultaneously in case at the Chevrolet design centers and at Ford's. Billy Boyer, who worked in Ford's Design Center at Dearborn Michigan, picks up the story. "That same evening Walker called our Design Studio from Paris with instructions to "put some clay on that thing" and build that car. "That telephone call, gave us instant authority", said Boyer, who at the time was senior designer on the yet un-named project car.

Boyer's boss, Frank Hershey tells it differently. Quoted by Dennis Adler in a "Car Collector's " magazine some time ago, Hershey said that he and Boyer had worked out the design but the Production Planner Chase Morsey actually personally sold Ford management on the project. In any event a prototype appeared on 20 February 1954 at the Detroit Auto Show to thunderous acclaim, although it can be said that at this point the car was "nameless". A "name that car" contest resulted in Ford car stylist winning a new suit of clothes for submitting the winning moniker. Following a very short final push at Ford, the first T-bird rolled off the line on 9 September 1954, as a 1955 model. The two-seater drop-head coupe had overall length of 175.3 inches (445 cm (and weighed in at 2833 lb (1285 kg). That these dimensions made it the smallest Ford to be built in decades surely says a lot about American cars of that time period of the 1950's.

Throughout its history the Thunderbird has seldom been a technological high tech leader. That is unless you count sequential turn-signals and Swing-A-Way steering wheels as technological leadership. It has no innovations like the Corvette's glassfibre bodies, fuel injection or fully independent suspension. Yet for most American male drivers especially teens at that time the 1955 Ford Thunderbird holds permanent enchantment in their mind.

The Story of 1958 Pontiac Bonneville

The 1957 had been a difficult year for Pontiac as it had lost of number of sales. To try and win back some of those lost sales, Pontiac introduced the '58 Pontiac Bonneville with some major changes. Prior, the Pontiac Bonneville was billed as a limited-production vehicle. This was no more as it hit full production. Also, in addition to a '58 Bonneville convertible, a hardtop Sport Coupe was added to make the Pontiac Bonneville a complete top-line series. In essence, the 1958 Pontiac Bonneville was a new automobile from the ground up, even the bodyshell was restyled; inspired from the X-member frame used on the Cadillac.

Much Improved
The 1958 Pontiac Bonneville had a number of improvements made to peek the interest of buyers. The trim was top grade and the price of the Bonneville was reduced by $2,300 by making much of the lavish equipment "optional". The '58 Bonneville was also put on a shorter platform, the "Chieftain", which gave the car better handling. Probably the most interesting feature that was added to the '58 Bonneville was the "Ever-Level" air suspension that was optional for an extra $175. Although a fascinating feature, the feature's setup and price proved hard to overcome and not many customer opted for it.

A Performance Boost
All '58 Bonnevilles came equipped with a very capable 370 V-8 engine, called the Tempest. Pontiac offered six versions of the engine but most were sold with the single-four-barrel unit which offered a 10:1 compression and 285 horsepower and a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. When timed at the 0-60 mph sprint, Motor Trend timed the 1958 Pontiac Bonneville at a swift 8.2 seconds. It hit 88 mph in 18.8 seconds in the standing quarter mile, according to Motor Trend. Tom McCahill, from Mechanix Illustrated, took the 285 horsepower up to 125 mph which made him state: "The 1958 Pontiacs are hotter than a blowtorch."

The Bonneville Sold Well Amid A Tough Economy
The '58 Pontiac Bonneville sold much better than the '57 model. In all, the 1958 Pontiac Bonneville sold 3,096 convertibles and 9,144 hardtops. Although sales were healthy, just about everybody in the auto industry was down. Chevrolet's sales were down nearly 18 percent and Oldsmobile's sales were down 20 percent. Even Pontiac was down by over 30 percent. Even amid the tough year in the auto industry, the '58 Bonneville was a proven vehicle and when compared to other 1958s, it is a fairly appealing car.
