For those of you who were unable to attend last night's reception,

here is GBE President Becky Winslow's presentation speech:

This year, the Gorham Business Person of the Year award will go to two people who have been involved with the Gorham community and the Gorham Business Exchange since 1996 when they bought their first booth at Gorham Marketplace. Following the show, this year's recipients stepped right into leadership positions and served on GBE's board of directors and as chairs of Marketplace.

This year's recipients have also been honored - numerous times - by their industry. Most notably, one was named Instructor of the Year by the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame, which is a testament not only to professional dedication, but also to the quality of character. The other recipient was inducted into the World Christian Martial Arts Hall of Fame for outstanding contribution to Martial Arts.

Even though the physical location for their business is in Westbrook, this year's recipients are Gorham residents and donate a great deal of time to our community. They have run a program through Gorham Rec for 8 years. They frequently volunteer at the elementary and middle schools. They sponsor a Martial Arts Club at USM as well as many other community projects and events.

Both recipients are mentors to youth and adults alike and exemplify what it means to be a dedicated and engaged community member. Each and every day, this year's recipients teach their students to be confident, respectful, disciplined people who affirm an “I Can Do It” attitude.

So now, with great thanks for all they have done and continue to do for the Town of Gorham, I would like to award the 2013 Business Person of the Year award to … Allan and Jennifer Viernes of the Greater Portland School of Jukado.

Speaker: Charles Colgan is a Professor of Public Policy and Management in the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine and Chair of the masters program in Community Planning and Development. He is also Associate Director of the USM Center for Business and Economic Research and a Senior Fellow at the Center for the Blue Economy in Monterey, California. He served as Chair of the State of Maine Consensus Economic Forecasting Commission from 1992-2010. Prior to coming to USM, he served in the Maine State Planning Office under 3 governors. He received his BA from Colby College and his PhD in Economic History from the University of Maine.

This seminar is not about selling in the true sense of the word. It is about (1) effectively communicating with your customer, (2) being competent, and (3) developing your ability to establish rapport so your customer will want your product and you won't have to "sell" it to them.

Typical sales training generally focuses on systems and processes, with less emphasis on rapport building and persuasion skills. Unfortunately, you can have the very best systems and processes in the world, but if you can’t connect with your customer, you lose (and so does your business)!

However, when you combine (1) an effective sales presentation, (2) sales and product knowledge, (3) an ability to discern and handle communication styles, and (4) rapport building skills, you have a winning combination.

Theodora J. Kalikow began her presidency at the University of Southern Maine on July 10, 2012.

She previously served as president of the University of Maine at Farmington from 1994 to 2012. Kalikow is a guiding force in Maine’s educational and civic life. She is known for her tireless efforts to provide the kind of honest, active, forward-thinking leadership and deep commitment to education that has been the hallmark of her administration. With a tenure of 18 years, she was the longest-serving UMF president since the Farmington school became a four-year college in 1945.

Under her leadership and directed by her deep commitment to education, UMF received top regional rankings in U.S. News & World Report for 15 consecutive years and was nationally recognized as one of 20 model universities committed to maximizing student potential in “Student Success in College: Creating Conditions that Matter,” published by the American Association for Higher Education.

There is no charge for this luncheon.
