margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xJO1ERp0ps0/SfheLapXesI/AAAAAAAABqk/C0jqJaXGexA/s320/biola_business_building.jpg" /></a></div><a href="http://www.biolamedia.com/index.shtml">The Biola Media Conference</a>, which is a little more for people interested in Hollywood but attracts Christian filmmakers of all stripes, was last week and I wanted to share a couple of great wrap-up links.<br /> <br /> <a href="http://www.conversantlife.com/biolamedia">First there is the "official" site, which as a handful of quick interviews with some of the speakers and attendees.&nbsp; </a>Brian Bird has an interesting story of networking that throws some cold water on the "independant" ideas of many independant filmmakers.&nbsp; Also, a good thing to remember is that Bird himself got started as a writer on "Fantasy Island" and didn't move into "Christian" filmmaking until 23 years into his career(&amp; No, I don't count <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Touched-Angel-Complete-First-Season/dp/B0002ERWVE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dvd&amp;qid=1241013229&amp;sr=8-1">"Touched by an Angel"</a> as Christian).<br /> <br /> <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=bmc09">For a more "ground-level" look, check out this page of Twitter posts about the conference</a>.&nbsp; Some are silly, some interesting.&nbsp; One thing of note is that a key speaker at the conference, <a href="http://supercandid.blogspot.com/search/label/ralph%20winter">Ralph Winter,</a> hasn't stopped making X-Men movies to make Christian movies.&nbsp; He wears both hats, one that pays the bills, one that makes Christian films.&nbsp; Winter still seems less a hands-on producer than a businessman to me, especially given the wildly varying quality of the film's he's associated with in the "producer" role.&nbsp; I mean, he produced <a href="http://www.amazon.com/X2-United-Blu-ray-Halle-Berry/dp/B001PPGAJY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dvd&amp;qid=1241013202&amp;sr=8-2"><i>X2</i></a> &amp; <a href="http://www.amazon.com/X-Men-Stand-Blu-ray-Hugh-Jackman/dp/B000KC86F4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dvd&amp;qid=1241013214&amp;sr=8-3"><i>X-Men: The Last Stand</i></a>, and those film's couldn't be more different in quality, so Winter's involvementis probably much more on the business end and less on the creative.&nbsp; That's why I take his comments about the creative aspects Christian filmmaking with a grain of salt:&nbsp; he's a businessman after all.&nbsp; <br /> <br /> The most interesting thing was all the people talking about<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Eszterhas"> Joe Eszterhas and his conversion</a>, which, given that he published a memoir about it last year is kind of old news.&nbsp; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Devoted reader Adrian dropped me a line about a funny bit of news regarding <a href="http://supercandid.blogspot.com/search/label/expelled"><i>Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed</i></a>.&nbsp; <a href="http://www.randi.org/site/index.php/jref-news/500-pigasus-awards-for-2008-announced.html">The producers of the movie have recieved the dubious honor of a "Pigasus" award, awarded by the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) to people or organizations that have done their best in the past year to snuff out science and promote irrationality.</a></div><br /> <a href="http://supercandid.blogspot.com/search/label/expelled"><i>Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed</i></a> won under the category of "To the Funding Organization that supports the most useless study related to the occult, supernatural, or paranormal during the year."<br /> <br /> As much as it tickles me to mention this 'award,' I have to say that I would define very little of Expelled's content as relating to the occult, supernatural or paranormal, and the elaborations on the <a href="http://www.randi.org/site/index.php/jref-news/500-pigasus-awards-for-2008-announced.html">Pigasus website </a>offer little defense of their reasoning.&nbsp; To be fair, several of their other 'awardees' have only the slightest connection to these subjects.&nbsp; It seems this award is really just looking to lambast bad science, which is all well and good, but maybe not so fun.&nbsp; <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The producers share the 'honor' with such luminaries as late night cable TV, some guy who claims he can shoot beams from his eyes, Jenny McCarthy (for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMR_vaccine_controversy">her anti-vaccine hysteria</a>), and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Trudeau">Kevin Trudeau</a>.&nbsp; I happen to have actually read Trudeau's book about "cures THEY don't want you to know about."&nbsp; A friend bought it and gave it to me, asking me for my opinion.&nbsp; I found it startling that the book provided not a single actual 'cure,' instead spending the vast majority of its time bad-mouthing such villains as Doctors, Gyms, and antibiotics.&nbsp; It was also one of the most eregrious examples of logical fallacies I've ever seen.&nbsp; Until <a href="http://supercandid.blogspot.com/search/label/expelled"><i>Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed</i></a> came along!&nbsp; This is either a really elaborate hoax, or this is a real movie. Rest assured, that we will not rest until we know the truth. I don't know which scares me more....<br /><br />This also seems like a good time to mention Josh's own film, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dangerous-Calling-Carrie-Walrond/dp/B001LIP8O8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dvd&amp;qid=1239575552&amp;sr=8-1"><i>Dangerous Calling</i></a>. It seems to be a legitimate 'Christian Horror Movie,' about mysterious deaths in a small town church. Looks like it could be good, scary fun without getting into awful <i>Thr3e</i>-esque territory. There are lots of clips available on the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/dawsbrothers">Daws Brothers' youtube channel</a>, and the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Dangerous-Calling-Carrie-Walrond/dp/B001LIP8O8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dvd&amp;qid=1239575552&amp;sr=8-1">film is available now on DVD</a>. I'm pretty sure that <i>The Bike King and the Ten Commandments</i> is fake, mainly because it runs through the entire movie's plot in the trailer. Don said it looked like <i>Buffy the Vampire Slayer </i>with ballet instead of vampire slaying. You have to watch the trailer, which looks like the movie takes a wild turn at some point. I can only hope that the film ends with a <i>Step Up 2: The Streets </i>style dance-off against the devil. Too bad there are none nearby, or I could encourage people to see this excellent movie.&nbsp; Speaking of which, <a href="http://www.christianfilmtrailers.com/index.php">Christian Film Trailers</a> has a <a href="http://christianfilmtrailers.com/heumoore/thewidowsmight/">link to the new trailer </a>for <a href="http://supercandid.blogspot.com/search/label/widow%27s%20might"><i>The Widow's Might</i></a>.&nbsp; I was impressed by the opening episode, which is operatic and gripping, even if it is a bit silly.&nbsp; Sure, Ian McShane gives at least 4 monologues in these 2 hours, but he sells the heck out of them.&nbsp; Sure, David shouting at tanks doesn't quite have the dramatic ring of a true "David vs. Goliath" battle, but that works too.&nbsp; Mostly because it is operatic, and in opera you expect over the top theatrics and emoting.&nbsp; Its not <i>Battlestar Galactica</i>, but <i>Battlestar Galactica</i> is the first show that I thought of after watching this, and that is a very good thing.<br /> <br /> Biblically, it has some issues.&nbsp; For one thing, it is far too prudish and bloodless for being based upon one of the most violent and lascivious books in the Bible. But until a "real" adaptation of the Old Testament is made, then this will do.&nbsp; <i>Kings </i>airs Sundays on NBC, or you can watch it like I do, on <a href="http://www.hulu.com/">Hulu</a>.&nbsp; Sure, it's no <i>Battlestar Galactica</i>, but it does remind me of it in a good way. I especially like that it doesn't shy away from talking about God, even if the people aren't really Jewish. <a href="http://www.nbc.com/Kings/">Full episodes aren't online yet, but I'm sure they will be soon. </a> I also have to say I like, in a ridiculous way, that NBC is apparently promoting <i>Kings </i>by using advertising modeled on their sitcoms. "When he's not <i>charming </i>the ladies, David Shepard is smooth talking the King. What will this guy do next?!" Wait, what?<br /><br />Today I wanted to tell everyone about <i>Jesus People</i>. I had never heard of the show/improv group before, but <a href="http://www.christianitytoday.com/movies/news/2009/jesuspeople.html">Christianity Today had a story about a movie version</a>, so I watched the original webisodes, and was hooked at once. It is a spot-on parody of Christian culture and Christian music in particular. I like the guy who leads the group<i>(Joel McCrary - ed.)</i> because he has a Seth Rogan type of voice and delivery, and is always being interrupted by everyone. I burst out laughing when someone suggests opening in prayer and then immediately jumps into a full-on hands up prayer without any warning. I'm using a borrowed one for now, until my insurance comes through and I can replace it.<br /><br />Speaking of, in a totally almost legitimate news item, <i>The Love Dare</i> is available for the Kindle. If you don't know, the Kindle is just about the bee's knees, or, as Jeff Bezos says, the greatest literary invention since the printing press. Really. The Kindle and Gutenberg. Like peas in a pod.<br /><br />I'll buy it. I love my Kindle, even if I don't read it very often. A lot of that is due to the fact that I already have a HUGE shelf of books I haven't read. You know, old fashioned, dead trees and such. So a little device with infinitely more books I haven't read doesn't get a lot of play. But, getting back to the news, my birthday is coming up in April, and if someone wanted to gift me <i>The Love Dare</i> for the Kindle as a birthday gift, I promise you'll have a review. I might even blog about going through the book, complete with me waving a baseball bat at the neighbors, just like Kirk Cameron. Lucky for him, I really like this trailer!&nbsp; <br /> <br /> This is the film <em><a href="http://www.bringingupbobby.com/">Bringing up Bobby</a></em>, a Christian comedy about a family dealing with their parent's will.&nbsp; It looks like a lot of fun, with some beautiful shots and some fun looking characters.&nbsp; I hope the film has the same energy that this trailer has, and it could be a great Christian comedy.&nbsp; He doesn't get specific about how it deviates from the book, but he implies that the ending might not be as bittersweet as the classic novel. &nbsp; He says that it is a great small kids movie, which hopefully means it has a bit more energy than a typical Landon Jr. snooze-fest.&nbsp; He describes the animation as "70s after-school special," which looks accurate.&nbsp; It might even be a fun retro-style look if audiences can get past the lower quality of the animation.&nbsp; I have to give great credit for them not going with super-cheap CGI.&nbsp; Every time I happen to catch a glimpse of the CGI Mickey Mouse show for small kids I die a little inside.&nbsp; <br /> <br /> To give you an idea of Leydon's position, he has previously reviewed, and gave a <a href="http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117938520.html?categoryid=31&amp;cs=1">mixed review</a> to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Fireproof-Kirk-Cameron/dp/B001KEHAFI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dvd&amp;qid=1236022424&amp;sr=8-1"><i>Fireproof</i></a>.&nbsp; I had to go back a while to find another movie he reviewed that I'd seen, <a href="http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117936464.html?categoryid=2850&amp;cs=1">but he liked</a> <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Forgetting-Sarah-Marshall-Unrated-Widescreen/dp/B001C0JCBA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=dvd&amp;qid=1236022441&amp;sr=8-1"><i>Forgetting Sarah Marshall</i></a> not quite as much as I did.&nbsp;
