I miss those days when we all went about our relationships with pedestrian preoccupations such as 'What if he's (or she's) cheating on me.' I mean, if I get into a relationship now, I'd have a ton of anxieties to choose from. If the guy starts acting weird, withdrawn or secretive, I'd go - 'What if he's a fraud whose lies I'd have to cover up for the rest of my life? (Suits) or 'What if he's a "good" serial killer? (Dexter) or 'What if he's a SPY who was sent to lure me into a relationship, make secret sex tape which he will later hand over to my DAD? (Scandal)' or the worst one yet - 'What if he's COOKING CRYSTAL METH, YO? (Breaking Bad).

I mean, I get the fascination with the dark side and all that. And as a writer, I get that there is no story without conflict and the bigger the conflict, the more exciting the plot. And it's not like this telling-the-bad-guy's-story or the story of the-good-guy-forced-to-do-bad-things is even new. BUT. Please acknowledge that this is some seriously twisted shit that we're being served up on television of late and what's worse, it's by popular demand!

Just yesterday, I was watching Breaking Bad and found myself wincing every time Walt came close to getting caught by Hank. At this point, the voice in my head yelled me into pausing and observing a minute's silence to feel nothing but shame.

I still want him to get caught by Skyler though, so maybe my ethics are not entirely clouded by pop culture yet. But who knows? I'm only on Season 2. There are still two and a half seasons left to slowly surrender my soul to the whole Maybe-there's-no-such-thing-as-right-and-wrong school of non-thought that everyone's subscribing to these days. Hey, I don't mean to be preachy, okay? But if your addiction to these shows doesn't cause you any kind of ethical discomfort at all, then maybe - just maybe - you're on Season 5 already. Yeah, you're too far gone, yo.

Also, I feel so sorry for the impressionable young girls growing up on this stuff. I mean, they're probably going to get attracted to seriously boring men because they are now primed to believe that they must be leading some sort of dangerous, exciting double life.

It's true, you know? I was eleven when I identified Axl Rose as the definition of desirable. I'm 32 now and when I see a grown man in ripped jeans with even a borderline rock personality, my brain immediately orders my knees to go weak in acknowledgment. I mean, if this guy is past his twenties and is still dressing like that, he probably has more issues than I do. And while I'm more than aware that 1993 was a long time ago, my brain is still wired to think he is hot. SO. These kids growing up on Breaking Bad are in for a lot worse. I mean, they'll get into relationships or worse, get married to these nerdy types expecting epic twists to their story. And when they realize that they are just regular, good guys who care about their families and are law-abiding citizens, they are going to get disappointed. And it's not going to be easy to get out of that relationship either. Just imagine how that conversation would go:

'Do you seriously have NOTHING to hide?'

'No!'

'So this is ALL there is to you? You're just a good, responsible guy?'

'Uhh, yes? I swear, I can prove it. What do you want me to do?'

<Throws things> Are you KIDDING me? This is NOT what I signed up for! This is supposed to be the smoke-screen. You are supposed to moonlight as a drug lord or an ex-con who is now helping the police or I don't know, at least tell me you have two passports or something!

'What? What are you talking about?'

'Oh, dear God. It's true, it's true! I married the smoke-screen, I married the SMOKE-SCREEN!'

'What? Wait. What smoke-screen? What are you talking about?'

'Okay, regular-super-unforgivably-boring-dumbass, it's like the womanizing-hotel-buying-power-abusing Bruce Wayne acting as a smoke-screen for Batman. Or the plain vanilla Walter White acting as a smoke-screen for Heisenberg. GET IT? Now, tell me. Do you or do you not have a Heisenberg?'

'Oh, man. You are so damaged. What did your parents do to you?'

'Okay, okay. Are you at least having an affair?'

'What? Of course not!'

<Sobs> I can't believe this. I CAN.NOT believe this! Was I not even worth something as boring and entirely cliché as an affair? Do I really inspire NOTHING in you? <Screams and exits>'

Yeah, that's going to be one twisted generation. This is where vampire fiction trumps everything else. For all the flak the genre has been getting (though mostly for the right reasons), I can rest assured that my daughter is never going to bring home her 137 year old vampire boyfriend and expect me to offer him squirrels and bunnies for dinner. But on a more serious note, what I like about Vampire Diaries at least (it's the only vampire fiction I watch, I promise) is that - it begins with humanity at its most depraved and pushes it along the path to redemption. So yes, give me those dark, twisted, brooding and by all means, flawed characters. But give me characters who struggle - on a daily basis - to overcome the bad. This whole overcoming-the-good-side-to-do-the-inevitable-bad-thing is a dark path that we've opened the door to and we're going to pay for it.

But whatever, yo. I didn't write it. I'm on Season 4 and can't stop now.

People are always telling me that I should get out more. It’s usually accompanied by a sage nod and a string of well-meaning and yet, profoundly ignorant statements (stemming from absurd assumptions about introversion) that are supposed to motivate me into getting out: “Just come, meet some relatives, TALK! You’ll feel happy,” or “I know what’s missing in your life. Gossip!” and my personal favourite (because of how high it scores in the absurd-o-meter), “Don’t be such an aunty. When was the last time you got hammered?” It always takes me every ounce of self-restraint to not point out the obvious: That introverts are not unhappy people leading empty lives that are boring.

Here’s the thing: There has been a sudden explosion of memes and articles on the lines of 27 Signs of Introversion and 15 Things Only Introverts Understand and yada yada yada and I keep thinking: Why? WHY are we explaining the difference between ‘introversion’ and ‘depression’ to people who are clearly too busy gossiping and getting hammered to have ever brushed up against the concept of a dictionary? And why should we have to come up with excuses for who we are EVERY TIME we turn down an invitation to ‘get out.’

I mean, it’s not like they consulted us when they decided that out is better than in. I get that it’s better for some people, but if they can’t see it that way, I’ve decided that I’m going to stop apologizing for choosing The Good Wife over Saturday night with people who want to talk about their relationships, get drunk and take selfies.

See, I keep seeing pictures with captions on the lines of ‘This is the life’ on my FB newsfeed all the time. The pictures are usually of exotic vacations, a bottle of chilled beer, sinfully rich desserts, partying with friends and on and on. Most people go on to comment and agree that it is, indeed, the life. I look at that and I want to make a meme of my own with the same caption: A picture of Tom Hanks in Castaway, talking to Wilson, the volleyball. An island to myself where no one can call and ask me if I’d like to get out! What’s not to like? This. Is. The. Life.

This brings me to the question that no one is asking: How did introverts get into this mess in the first place? You know? Being treated like socially impaired half-people, who need to be coaxed out of our toxic shells where we are clearly DYING. I mean, the typical introvert feels like he might lose his mind if he doesn’t get time to himself, and the typical extrovert feels that way if he’s left alone with his thoughts for long periods of time – as proven by people who go “I don’t know HOW you sit at home all the time. I’d go MAD. I mean, it’s unhealthy!” Waitaminute. You are basically saying that you are not interesting enough to keep yourself interested and somehow I’m the one with the problem?

Probably, the only people more annoying to a true blue introvert than the Extrovert Evangelists, are the Wannabe Introverts. They exist and they are a ‘thing.’ They’ve watched too many shows (Breaking Bad, Big Bang Theory, Newsroom and on and on) that have established nerds as ‘cool’ in their heads; and now they think the only way to claim said coolness is by convincing everyone on social media about the big, introverted nerdy FREAKS that they are (Of course, this would be a lot more convincing if they stopped updating their status about introversion from 3 different clubs they checked into on the same night).

I better stop now, my head feels full: another side-effect of staying in.

Working Of Struts 2 Hello World

In my previous post on Getting started with struts 2, i have explained about the configuration of eclipse, the localhost server and the folder structure of a hello world program. Now let me explain the flow of the project and its working of the struts-blank project.

Struts is purely based on the Model- View- Contoller (MVC) design pattern. It is one of the best and most well developed design patterns in use. By using the MVC architecture we break the processing in three sections named Model, the View, and the Controller.

The struts container first of all reads the WEB-INF/web.xml file which instructs the server to use the required filter and mapping conditions. This is the file which has got the welcome list tag. You must specify the file name in the welcome-list tag, whichever you want as the index file for your project.

In struts application we have another xml file which is a Struts configuration file named as struts.config.xml. The name of this file can be changed. The name of the struts configuration file can be configured in the web.xml file. This file is placed under the WEB-INF directory of the web application. It is an XML document that describes all or part of Struts application. In our project it is nothing but the struts.xml file which include the example.xml file. These two xml files acts as the controller. When ever a action is called, the control flow to struts.xml and finds the corresponding class file linked to that action. The class files are the compiled form of java file which are the actual performer in the project. These file contains the getter setter methods and the database handling codes. Generally these java files are called as the Model. Every function in the class has got the SUCCESS and FAILURE, depending upon the result the corresponding jsp files are linked in the controller. Those jsp files are called as View. In the run time controller acts as the interface between the model and view.

In this Hello world, first of all the web.xml file is called, that tells

org.apache.struts2.dispatcher.ng.filter.StrutsPrepareAndExecuteFilter as filter and the index.html as welcome file. In index.html a action is being called, the corresponding class file(java page - model) and the result page(jsp page - view) will be found in the struts.xml file. Now the HelloWorld.java file in the WEB-INF/example folder will be executed because helloworld.action is called from index.html. In HelloWorld.java the string 'MESSAGE' is assigned to a value by retriving it from the package.properties file through getter and setter methods. Then the output of the program is show in the HelloWorld.jsp file as mentioned in the struts.xml.

The same control flow applies for all the Complex project, first try to run this project and understand its flow which will make you feel comfortable when handling complex projects. Getting Started with Struts - Hello World

To get a basic knowledge and introduction about Struts 2, You can read my previous post on Struts 2, now i have planned to write a post on getting started with struts 2 for Beginners. When i started Learning Struts, as a regular thing a googled for information, but unfortunately i ended up in flustration. No site gave me fulfleged infomation on getting kick started with Struts. But i believe you could get enough information from the following article.

I prefer eclipse IDE as the best for development purpose so i have used eclipse, you could get one from eclipse.org. Coming to the topic, for writing a hello world in struts i insist you to make use of the struts-blank package, so that you need not worry about the folder structures needed to follow in the framework. On understanding the first program you can get familiar with those thing. Download the Struts-Blank package, in this link you could find lots of distribution, But don't get confused with that. Choose the latest stable release, its only up to you whether to download full struts or only the application(Depends on your internet Speed!!!).

Unzip the downloaded package, in that you could find a file named struts2-blank-2.1.6.war import the file in your Eclipse IDE. You could find import option in the File->import in Eclipse. On Clicking on import, You could find a dialog asking for the type of file to import, select the war file inside the web folder or simply type war in the text box. then you will be asked for the location of the war file and a project name, after finishing that list of libraries will be shown, for an hello world those libraries are not needed. So you can skip that dialog and press Finish. And thats it your project is ready to launch.

To run a J2EE project you need a server that can be either Apache or JBoss or asny other that eclipse support. You can get apache or Jboss and install it. I have used JBoss for my application but apache is the default and popular one. But configuring the servers both covers for the same procedure.In the servers tab, right click and select new->server. You will be shown a list of servers Eclipse supports.
Select the server you have installed with the correct version, and in the next screen you will be shown the port number and other information how the server is going the run. And in the next screen you can click finish and now the right click on the project name and select "Run as"->"Run on server".
For the first Time you will be asked to choose the server to run, in that dialog a server that you have configured in the last step will be shown and you can check the option "Always use this server" so that from the next you will not be asked for confirmation on server. Then Click finish in the next dialog.
The server will start and You can see your hello world running.

Apache Struts 2 is an elegant, extensible framework for creating enterprise-ready Java web applications. The framework is designed to streamline the full development cycle, from building, to deploying, to maintaining applications over time.

Apache Struts 2 was originally known as WebWork 2. After working independently for several years, the WebWork and Struts communities joined forces to create Struts. This new version of Struts is simpler to use and closer to how Struts was always meant to be.

Apache Struts is an open-source framework that is used for developing Java web application. Originally developed by the programmer and author Craig R. McClanahan, this was later taken over by the Apache Software Foundation in 2002. Struts have provided an excellent framework for developing application easily by organizing JSP and Servlet based on HTML formats and Java code. Strut1 with all standard Java technologies and packages of Jakarta assists to create an extensible development environment. However, with the growing demand of web application, Strut 1 does not stand firm and needs to be changed with demand. This leads to the creation of Strut2, which is more developer friendly with features like Ajax, rapid development and extensibility.

Struts is a well-organized framework based on MVC architecture. In Model-View-Controller Architecture, Model stands for the business or database code, View represents the page design code and the Controller for navigational code. All these together makes Struts an essential framework for building Java applications. But with the development of new and lightweight MVC based framworks like Spring, Stripes and Tapestry, it becomes necessary to modify the Struts framework. So, the team of Apache Struts and another J2EE framework, WebWork of OpenSymphony joined hand together to develop an advanced framework with all possible developing features that will make it developer and user friendly.

Strut2 contains the combined features of Struts Ti and WebWork 2 projects that advocates higher level application by using the architecture of WebWork2 with features including a plugin framework, a new API, Ajax tags etc. So the Struts communities and the WebWork team brought together several special features in WebWork2 to make it more advance in the Open Source world. Later the name of WebWork2 has changed to Struts2. Hence, Apache Strut 2 is a dynamic, extensible framework for a complete application development from building, deploying and maintaining.

Google is Simply Amazing. Can anyone stop them from their rapid growth, No one!! . They are really unbeatable. They are very innovative, i guess they will beat Apple soon. Today i was searching for a Tamil transliteration, I could not use orkut or blogger for this transliteration because i have not yet installed Tamil fonts in the system. So i googled and the very first link took me to the wonder. And this is the link.

Adobe integrated runtime is a cross-platform environment for building rich internet application using Adobe flash, Adobe flex , HTML and AJAX that can be deployed as a desktop application. This environment helps the developers to use their web development skills, tools and codes to develop a application that runs without the support of a browser.

Important Dates:
Air, once called as Apollo gave extension for developing application with the flex framework on March 19, 2007.
A stable Linux version of AIR was released on October 1, 2007.
Adobe AIR 1.1 was released on June 16, 2008.

Both the deployment paradigms provide advantage as well as disadvantage. Say, for a rich internet application developed in browser doesn't need any installation, but the application that is developed using flex must be downloaded, checked for certificate and finally installed in the desktop. In the same way a the user can get lots of freedom in accessing the file in his local system using the application developed in AIR since it s in local, on the other hand a browser application has got lots of restriction and security issues in accessing and storing data in the local.

AIR applications can operate offline, and then activate further functionality or upload data when an active Internet connection becomes available.

<div> and <span> are two different useful and powerful tools when dealing with cascading style sheet. Both the tags are used to describe the contents that cannot be properly described by other HTML tags because these tags supports additional formatting capabilities both for inline elements and block elements.
On the other hand <style> tag provides a way to define style rules within the documents <head> tag. The style rules may help the developers to set the visual attributes like color,size,algnments to the elements that are displayed.

<DIV>
Div (short for division) divides the content into individual sections. Each section can then have its own formatting, as specified by the CSS. Div is a block-level container, meaning that there is a line feed after the tag.
For example, if we have the following CSS declaration:
.large { color: #00FF00; font-family:arial; font-size: 4pt; }

The HTML code

<Span>

Span is similar to div in that they both divide the content into individual sections. The difference is that span goes into a finer level, so we can span to format a single character if needed. There is no line feed after the tag.

The HTML code
Span is not at the <span class="largefont">block level.</span>

Differences and default behavior

div and span differ from each other in one regard. In standard HTML, a div is a block level elements (and so visually isolates a section of a document on the page, in the same way as a paragraph) whereas a span is an inline element (for containing a piece of information inline with the surrounding text). In practice, even this feature can be changed by the use of CSS.

<STYLE>

Whenever a browser reads a style sheet, it will format the document according to it. In the early version of html, it is only used to markup the text. The layout of the document was supposed to be taken care of by the browser, without using any formatting tags. But as the HTML grown with new tags and attributes(such as font and color), it become more complicated for a browser to differentiate tag and text.

To solve this problem, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) - the non profit, standard setting consortium, responsible for standardizing HTML - created STYLES in addition to HTML 4.0. All major browsers support Cascading Style Sheets.
Usage

External Style Sheet

An external style sheet is ideal when the style is applied to many pages. With an external style sheet, you can change the look of an entire Web site by changing one file. Each page must link to the style sheet using the <link> tag. The <link> tag goes inside the head section.

An inline style should be used when a unique style is to be applied to a single occurrence of an element.
To use inline styles you use the style attribute in the relevant tag. The style attribute can contain any CSS property. The example shows how to change the color and the left margin of a paragraph:

This component is developed to illustrate the use and usage of most of the basic components.
The basic components that are used in this application are :

Labels
Image box
Combo box
Canvas
Check boxes
Timer
and Datagrid

The output of the application gets a look as

This is a simple example which gives us some detailed idea about the data binging between components. The check boxes in the canvas gets exchanged based upon the event of combo box.
A timer runs getting the local time from the system. Then a datagrid gets input from a xml file and shows it.

View States in Flex

In flex we have got a wonderful and amazing concept of states through which different views can be obtained dynamically for a single form. We need to share lots of information in a little space provided, because that would only help the viewer to be busy and interested in reading. To achieve those thing states really helps.

When you define a view state, you specify the changes, or overrides, from the base state to the new view state, or from any other view state to the new view state. As part of the view state, you can define the following overrides:

Set the value of object properties
Set the value of component styles
Add or remove components
Change the event handler assigned to an event

Simply saying states are used in adding, removing or customizing a component at the run time dynamically. The properties, style, position, event handling even the whole component can be changed or customized at run time through view states.

The output of the program looks some thing like this

Here the login gets succuss if the user name is 'Gowri' and the password is 'sankar' that can be changed in the code at line number 11.

For new users to get register a link is provided at the left bottom through which the state of the application is changed. And a new text input appears in the form for password confirmation. if the password in both the fields matches a alert for registration is shown else error!

Here viewstates are used to jump between these two states.

The latest technology tools help us in achieving the creation of more richest internet application. Flex is a highly productive, free open source framework for building and maintaining expressive web applications that deploy consistently on all major browsers, desktops, and operating systems.

On 13 and 14th of march 2009, open source software camp was conducted in chennai. Being a open source geek i was interested in participating in it. I came to know about this camp through chipkidz. Then a team was formed in the company to persent on RIA widget. I too got a chance to be a part of the team. Has i have got inspired by blogging. I choose to be a blogger, where i must blog all the events about the preparation of the camp. It was very interesting and i got to know many people in the company through this event. And attended the camp finally and that i was feeling proud to say 'I am a open source geek'. The camp inpired me a lot.

The reason the familiarity of flex over other web designing tools is that, it was the first tool to compile swf file from code. Customized components can be created and flex can be mastered easily.
Some of the useful tips that i have gathered from kumaran to master flex are as follows:

Don't use IDE, because IDE is for Rapid Application Development, so it will not be use for a learner. To learn one must first boycott the syntax and the class names.
Debug, learning to debug without the help of a IDE debugger will improve your knowledge
Store/ retrieve data try working with database make it more interactive
learn xml
built and execute lot of sample programs
master MVC
Differentiate component and container architecture
Become strong in basic widgets
learn to integrate search engines to your application

Barcode generation is implemented in billing process, Basically each product will have a price. product database will contain the information about the pricing of the corresponding item. Each character in the product name will be encoded with a specific value and for those values barcode will be generated and pasted on the product. The reverse process will happen will reading the barcode while billing and the price of the product is obtained from the database.
In the session with Mr. Kumaran we discussed about the achivements in last 25 days and works to be performed in the forthcoming 25 days. In the last 25 days the keywords are

Hi...

As i said earlier, I have started learning flex...

Now i am going to share what i learned in flex for this 2 days...

Its may more primitive, still let me share this tips...

1.Accordion panel:

This component is a evolution of tab bars added with some animations. By using this component lot of information can displayed on th eweb page, using very little space. Only sites that are short and crisp will be more attractive so this component will help those situations.

2. Link button:

Link button is a very old component which is already seen in all programming paradigms. But here the syntax slittly varies from those.

Usage:

3.Repeator control:

Using this control we could get a shadow window effect, which is nothing but the parent page will be made 'not responging' and dimmed, then a small window pops up for ur responce. This will very useful while showing alert msg or err msg.

Today in the morning session Mr.Murali and Mr. Kannan gave a good intro lecturer on getting started with Flex.

Those thing that i grabbed from them comes as follows:

First of all the output file formate of a flex project is .swf file and the files engaged in this project are .mxml and .as(Action script) files.

Now web development jumped from flash to flex the reason behind this is...In flash scrips could be written but programming cannot be done.
So in those days designing and programming are considered to be different.
But now both got merged in flex so that programmers could design as well as program as web site.
Flex can be connected to any kind of backend such as MySQL,postSQl,oracle through java.
Its very simple to jump from java technology to flex by simply replacing the jsp part with flex component on the web server.
