Which worked and means that I will have turquoise toes.... er cuffs, since this pattern is Top > Down. :-)</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiwzeBwqE8iQu2bwKxmOKn1vpqii8vfHwnN30_s038knZSbB1mrOCrOjpcRKlGTa4fRYQaqEA4EPa-sKnMfe3VmCz4OaWHzPksQnM8pM1ZezoW7MrJrbOm6CcW6FzEycFHJFMJfV9nQq2CI-sVyMbHC53EAaj_7iAEuHIprvE7Z6z9dSu6qKWfHm_uki0/s320/IMG_9446%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p>The pattern cautions that it <i>is not</i> very stretchy, but my yarn <i>is very</i> stretchy (~60%), so based on the ball of foot measurement (9 inches), and my gauge (8 sts/inch) being ~18% smaller than the prescribed (9.5 sts/inch), and my penchant for wanting a lot of room for the toes, I decided to embark upon the third size (9.75 inches). If my math is correct this should give some negative ease... but this is the line between Art and Science. So <i>fingers crossed</i> these socks turn out close to <i>as expected</i>... and noting that I am never 100% confident that my plan is the right plan.... and also why I prefer to work socks Toe > Up, so I can check foot fit earlier in the project. But, alas, each project is intended to be a learning experience. ;-)</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1523" data-original-width="2050" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAQorXV620XFLuVpR-kBdK9whsHIGUebjGE5-bruwcLe6uLTibiE_CXe6Wi_UP5ce_gtXAzzRqQEnFaa6NJlF-w4Pt8A5js_7xBo35F_-kewpbHadZkcE7UcPaLjGxqzyIwAEJ-1GFDhTDUlezyRmqHIWW5NGFh9fKNmBdtT5MEKYNVGZojxsCcfr23og/s320/IMG_E9507%5B1%5D.JPG" width="320" /></div><p>The pattern is written for 4 double-pointed needles (dpn). This reminds me of commentators talking years ago about how there are <i>4 quarters of football, and if you want to win, you have to play all of them</i>. Also notable is that the stands were mostly empty toward the end of the game. This is not typical of Broncos fans. Who would have thought that such a simple pattern would have so many things to talk about? Not me... but here I am, with Part 5. :-)</p><p>As a reminder.... I was contemplating accents at the <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/09/fiber-arts-friday-dutrieu-hat-part-4.html">end of the last post</a>.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgex93HtBpGcmgBuxvZojSPCrI1KXQ7PRLhcInfgKTimtk3TQqa8UaIKl4BqaR1a6EqMnF2cVl4J3FZAQZZRLLf1i7bFf-YvX8VNzNpxzttdxD41R17Sq4HcudqRC70oBwz5w3ltcR17HGmc45lLvkQ_apgsWqA55F9FBayZUI6jny5bF50SLcUtFbR/s320/IMG_8561%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p>I knit a couple of rows with the gold and decided I didn't like it. Then I knit the remainder out with the dark red-wine color (because it has matching blue flecks in it) but did not bind-off or join, because I was still not certain I liked it.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPqQjU8XDoBcZYPpuAqtaePWjOD98iEcVbC9qnTwKtgZ69IzO9mJKok-wHOPtKHpEuPKyJr6A4fR_r4RDrpZag3a0ABe8ZrQ7rPsuc6TW4d1KbprmG4ILOU8-x520wo_qcZ416-sb5h4DVIIfFhKQhv8xW9QqQe00q8J_kk8kWG53AWQfBIDSpqIN0/s320/IMG_8605%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p>I sat with it for a few days and shared the above photo with a friend... and the more I looked at it, the less I liked it. So I set it aside.</p><p>This is why color can be so challenging for me and why I generally prefer to work with un-dyed fibers!!</p><p>After letting it sit for several weeks, and growing impatient with the number of nearly-complete projects I had, I decided to bind-off with the wine-colored yarn over the Independence Day Holiday.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEVO-ZDqIUz_JQrrNaCTSh9rxBN9Iyvpx4FVsHiZyHzhxhCwhTIG0NxINg93ZxUH6VR6ptfwz71vIsSiqjAxGKUHpl4u6g7jRrxANxxS_VGnWJ_wNQ6Muwdbr1jBQgkBy-I0067ktQkGa34BYzybrS0QwgXgnZaTdAB6X0aomWfxE99rjSgO-HbIGvFnc/s320/IMG_9039%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p>At this point, I don't hate it. But I don't love it either.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3088" data-original-width="2316" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizPSjl53xnulrozGDwu8jKLaBPRAvosEmqhU_aVuqnSh662QqOP2GqlCsk__nuuIpQz3wE_JMkmLBvQaTs5dQIysvXvPQeVmet-EYkv5sjLfPm2V2vkvpaYq-76jH-ff88Ac41v2zk83hlpBBNC6duC_QDHkvetZcboe7c1Hry3sNDHRQSe9k9uzRaT24/s320/IMG_9042%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p>The pattern calls for a button to hold the flap in place and, of course, the ends still need to be woven in. </p><p>My current plan is to crochet a brim-edge in the wine-color and then likely add other embellishments.</p><p>So, clearly there will be at least a part 6 to this project. Stay tuned.</p><p>Happy Fiber Arts Friday!</p>Kathryn Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12990925295124938262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193450499711699622.post-76132898280662129022023-10-06T07:00:00.001-06:002023-10-06T07:00:00.142-06:00Fiber Arts Friday: Modified Sandbank, part 3<p>As I mentioned in my <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/08/fiber-arts-friday-modified-sandbank.html">plan last time</a>, the first thing I did was move this project to two 60-inch circular needles.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs8AEpPecxZsraQd7rP6hpcrJ4_d5FJghYzn38qODbqZTQmCiUc_NeCGRBREM5yjQMGCPCqUjbaiXhFrdFj802qiaL5TdzTx9U67V41kzStAeooUdTHAbtOrX_IS2Qnd3EEKEj7toonKSUV4eWHNeXunO92VMHICbPIXjpSPw0ppn1fCdAMNpdSuFPM5Q/s320/IMG_9659%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p></p><p>The first needle was a bit grabby with the yarn, so I wiped down the second prior to using it and both are running smoothly, after the first couple of rounds.</p><p>I finally finished the first skein about 3/4 into th<span style="background-color: white;">e<span> 5th</span> Repeat.</span></p><p>It is interesting that Repeat #5 used the same weight of yarn as Repeat #4 (14g each). I can only assume that one of my weights was not measured accurately, since I have a habit of using my scale where ever I happen to be. I'm curious to see what happens in Repeat #6.</p><p>In thinking about it further, I suspect that the finish weight for Round #3 was incorrect, which means the delta that gave me 27% increase was also incorrect. This is a good reminder that each and every step matters when it comes to an accurate predictive analysis.</p><p>Finally more than a month later, and earlier this week, I finished Repeat #6. The yarn used was 21% more than Repeat #5 and I'm still in Skein #2.</p><p>The wrap is starting to show it's Kidney Bean shape, and is still on a pair of 60-inch needles.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8HXqH4drHvVU3gjM2zFLXhooDm0dwUxhOka4R_02B_zUFcFVi78BcSj36rLlUeA9VoZuzsOyPpthwr2zFuOtgOgeFnpzUOR4ZvybjLjTcnUnJpsEjF1j37BfmE0XYS8rZ1BfMhafTE6lknRrZgbrFjnTXildYvVakFTtuT7MHQ8ipJm7XChJyw0scQYI/s320/IMG_0550%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p>If the 21% increase in yarn per Repeat continues, then I should be able to get 11 total repeats out of the yarn I have.</p><p>I am continuing to work on this project primarily during the mornings. Each Round is now taking more than 2 hours over several days, and each Repeat has 13 Rounds. Which means that my forecasted end date is continuing to move out. ;-) Currently I'm hoping to be complete in early March 2024.</p><p>Happy Fiber Arts Friday!</p>Kathryn Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12990925295124938262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193450499711699622.post-13863837973681482892023-09-29T07:00:00.000-06:002023-09-29T07:00:00.137-06:00Fiber Arts Friday: Dutrieu Hat, part 4<p>Since last time, I have been contemplating what to do with the <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/06/fiber-arts-friday-dutrieu-hat-part-3.html">last inch of my Dutrieu Hat</a>....</p><p>I went thru my stash of wool yarns and pulled out the close-to-sport weight. Having been <span>reminded that this yarn is camouflage-like when knit up, I offered to make a pair of socks for Hubba and his hunting trips.</span></p><p><span>I cast on i</span>n mid-May (5/11/23) with the intent of having the toes complete and set up for travel at the end of June.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYarHWSsxYkxeAmS7I5WJ5jjyBqqJQ3zfGcnl6P0aTeZGgzyHvdPyN4lpbWZT6KymXfQmI2BZBrErqKnDcdlBhdvv5xghp7JQdACZSSnwG9-lA6NCC41A31X1jPilqfav6kOMAqgDCNmMpoYzaru-sJdB2cS2Cy5NV2vRGc8ghXRGbn_FS9ePGz9zQupo/s320/IMG_8190%5B1%5D.JPG" width="320" /></div><p></p><p>This trip would involve airplanes and airports... and therefore a lot of waiting in uncomfortable spaces. Which meant my <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/04/fiber-arts-friday-modified-sandbank.html">Sandbank</a> would not be as appropriate as I had hoped... Then it turned out that I was further along on this project than I expected at the time of my trip, so I brought something else.</p><p>I primarily use two longer circulars and occasionally a set of double-pointed needles on socks or hand-related projects. So this will be different... especially since the needle portion is much smaller on these short, 9-inch circulars. Therefore holding them feels a lot different.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJtQRPo9CQdVZaBCzxgbR9OAtDgWRezp-VwT0A5gANG6gH5eO8AF3z85mwUKN1XTbHxvjRI2ATGTYZAtp__T-_DauUUH0pTfPlvmG35og75ySMhN4sVziLcs0ZYgTXzKGDkwu2jeTXOviQwPyqkhHkELrCjfzqUSPyyijeoW7nIgSJEnHdqqND2zz-Et8/s320/IMG_8590%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p></p><p>But there were able to hold everything, including the heels while in progress.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidTshELP0BDAOgd-t-iCNI4vasOKJowOuGOhVw_1UYmpeP9j3LBnCvKYNmuepBV9C6OugkMS8lWa7quksajE85nKLKXOyvSjXrYDZGdvDGIRoKa4GcpM4gC4mxzjA_1FBQLLguOySAqatpWQ-pjeAUyQM919xjiH5Zs6k1El-U3qTm6L9r5N-JiuvkK2I/s320/IMG_8662%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJEKrFwT7YPlSEXd6xskQ5bKG9Dbv9hWwRLbarq1zq26ZS1t6G3jZNLdQyLgo40j0g9TIvZC0OKV0AgT3jReZbjUWb1ejBdX4xfN4O46HeEMHR3Wegk5xSkvY0BDzToCp3Ed-_CCuvQEEihsokVKdnhwnz7F5ikedfUpQAiJ-mRR3_onXHJL7BGqOuc3U/s320/IMG_8663%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p>I finished these up several days after my trip concluded.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyL2JHDHGDCNFQGV6_5GsCksfW9XHtRFRPBLDRmP6eVjFBgL7sV8TOXOWnrrcQs0LHBw3B8Ggw1PsazCeMUp-RYgxTHlJdpRQ285Z3eq1ZxxZ2qrdcl5q4FqT-M31aL-r7Wd4fEyYxOQ1yAKaLmCqJ_uhoRys5ZUnoyIVAl3g0znfKUyljX-XEs-56M3A/s320/IMG_8995%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p></p><p>As much as I am enjoying making socks, I am having a hard time understanding how much negative ease is the right amount. I have also wanted to make a Cloche for several years. Add in plenty of yarn left over from the <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/06/fiber-arts-friday-minty-mitts-part-3.html">Minty Mitts</a>, and this seemed like the right one.</p>In searching the interwebs for how to <a href="https://forvo.com/word/h%C3%A9l%C3%A8ne_dutrieu/">pronounce Dutrieu</a>, I learned that this is for <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Linux Libertine", Georgia, Times, serif;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A9l%C3%A8ne_Dutrieu">Hélène Dutrieu</a></span>, a Belgian Cyclist, Stunt Woman, and Aviator. Very cool, indeed!<p></p><p>My French is not very good and my Flemish is non-existent, but at least I can hear the pronunciation in my head, even if I can not actually say it correctly. :-/</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4bXqdB_SP4VAZNuLqJTXOc5b3wz3FebebGNNfmUIA53f8FdL2lJnG5U-PLm41lriWFnb7m3vXXbsbe5S0KnaDYLs8j5iPbZpvhmZFulGiLwGWDwmMEUftwL0bDUCo3rc_iMevz6rNh8pfTdSZqfpJGV41SZ96iIvsYox99iC_Dcy2MJIA4ECHoSOD/s320/IMG_8195%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p></p><p>This is an interesting construction, as is typically the case with Wooly Wormhead designs. You can see the crown is starting to be shaped at the top of the piece, and the flap is beginning at the bottom. There will be a total of 6 panels when complete.</p><p>I did take the opportunity to upgrade my tools in this size... I'm surprised by how much I don't like working with my original wood- and bamboo-tipped tools.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsr10XDf_k3kNSfjwvLl0DT-f9Yq_LfmUS3Akc1dmCQdBmwVH_kWWuDR69gs8jqgAoQKfwuFLVIAjzrAFXMPHl1bcAKxsM2CDxsNRpWH4OfC7bS05ncBb7O1EsDQ5my2uI0lz9FQimDs3Xm3fO1RSai20rsQbXk3jFLypnhkacEDwUMzTS1N_sftl6/s320/IMG_8402%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p>And with my new tools, I'm much further than I expected to be at the end of Memorial Day Weekend... currently just beyond 50%.</p><p>Happy Fiber Arts Friday!</p>Kathryn Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12990925295124938262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193450499711699622.post-76328690221649944342023-08-25T07:00:00.067-06:002023-08-25T07:00:00.143-06:00Fiber Arts Friday: Modified Sandbank, part 2<p>Since <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/04/fiber-arts-friday-modified-sandbank.html">last time</a>, I tried to put this project on one circular needle, but it wasn't quite ready...</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmwzXz3X1oTqS2qs5YA3w9ZNdU4tn9aPGswOVqigPsSek531EhDr0JGckwOlJiHJmRkaEKcQAyFZeMO6z34q515L5e_fIUbFnUwb7ks4PGzgmBxQ4tth9sKp7xjkENURopNkddXB3FaxxWzf8rndOhAvt9njgMBjrx2o11qiFV81Wlq-_7NioINgFN/s320/IMG_7224%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p>So I moved it to two of my longest US0s. Then as I was speaking with the Department Steward during Drop-off, She confirmed they were both allowed because socks and mittens should not be in the same class and they would be judged separately, but they would not let her break the class, so I re-entered the second entry.</div></div><div><br /></div><div>There was also a change in the Photography Department to disallow matts, even though it is called out as specifically required in the Premium List.... and to be clear, I would not have mounted my photo unless the Premium List said it was required.</div><div><br /></div><div>I also confirmed that the Premium List Posted still states the matt is required the morning after Drop off.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="69" data-original-width="442" height="63" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHhVLtny_G2qplTEk_OohrGZ1Lmhg119Qs2bx62myISqOHGQQPz6sn4kAd4xhY8S6Y0iBoJVBc1Pmy4UJ3ibk7DXvYAe5Bo7d6YzLahSbTS8b7ZTTLywmhav2iOGJtYkWPrLY7zKwIE4mDE9f-czoRtL9CSm0lKTc9fCuQzFG1BfgKuYi5FBgOTAjMCYI/w400-h63/Photography%20Premium%20List%20-%20Larimer%20County%20Fair%202023.png" width="400" /></div><div><br /></div><div>Annoying on both accounts but alas, all of my entries were dropped off to their appropriate departments.</div><div><br /></div><div>Judging happens the day after Drop Off and is open to the public. I'm a little disappointed, since I enjoyed it last year... but alas, other things took priority.</div><div><br /></div><div>I did complete two 2-ply yarns made from Ramen Pencil Roving. The Pencil Roving allowed me to spin a smoother yarn that I have been able to in the past. This is all due to my improved tools and skills garnered during my recent Drum Carding Classes.</div><div><br /></div><div>I'm impressed with how similar the two skeins look next to each other. Especially since the one on the left has been washed/blocked and the one on the right has not yet.</div><div><br /></div><div>I have a possible project in mind for this yarn, which calls for ~700 yards. Therefore, if I'm able to spin a reasonably consistent yarn, I will need to spin ~206 total grams of it.... aka another ~150g/500yds. So maybe this will be a loose goal for the next several months.... something to think about.</div><div><br /></div><div>I continue to hope to be able to do a more dedicated tour in the future.... but for this year, I'm very happy to have been able to spin for each of the Stages and to have accomplished my simple goals.</div><div><br /></div><div>Happy Fiber Arts Friday!</div>Kathryn Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12990925295124938262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193450499711699622.post-63879721461418014372023-07-28T07:00:00.001-06:002023-07-28T07:00:00.162-06:00Fiber Arts Friday: Tour de Fleece, 2023, part 5<p>This week, week 4, includes the final few days of <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/07/fiber-arts-friday-tour-de-fleece-2023_01342401399.html">the mens' race</a> and the beginning of the womens' race...</p><div><br /></div><div><b>Day 21: Friday, July 21</b><b> - Stage 19</b></div><div>Continuing with the second single started on Thursday last week...</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; I also don’t remember if both or just one of my parents were there, and nor do I remember if these people were friends or family.</span></span><div><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">I do remember the adults talking about someone who was a “Merchant Marine” and that they had something to do with boats. This</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> term confused me.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">I was pretty sure that the Marines were military. I was also pretty sure that the Navy was the one with the boats. But </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">I wasn’t sure if the Marines were separate from the Navy.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">I was confident that "Merchant" meant "Shop Keeper."</span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">So I could not figure out why a retail store would need a military service.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: trebuchet;">I don’t remember hearing that term, "Merchant Marine," again, until last week, when I listened to <a href="https://www.modeknityarn.com/crafts/general-knitting/knit-technique/modeknit-yarn-podcast-007-lucy-neatby/">this podcast episode</a> by <a href="https://www.modeknityarn.com/">ModeKnit Yarns</a> from several years ago.</span></span></div><div><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-family: trebuchet;"><a href="https://www.ravelry.com/designers/lucy-neatby">Lucy Neatby</a>, famed Knitwear Designer and Author, began her adult life as a Merchant Marine.<br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">Fiber people are the most interesting people.</span></span></div>Kathryn Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12990925295124938262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193450499711699622.post-53176944859469976222023-07-15T07:00:00.000-06:002023-07-15T07:00:00.140-06:00Major Remodel Update<p>My Studio/Office has been toward the lower priority of <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/04/home-improvements-kitchen-remodel.html">resettling</a> after our major remodel over the winter of 2022-23.</p><p>At the time of this writing, my Studio/Office is mostly, but not fully moved in.</p><p>I have been working my Day Job from here for several months,</p><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimfsAlXMeEmhvAIhjCbNtVRBY-zgHutAF6aB3oKZF6YExRJEaVnImM-wjqySg2bNX98KJcOan5GmVGnzZ85N3ted-Chc-pR31wJtyIdLNbixsJY7_G6XwIzkJpJ3NJxJGkVA4U6C65_aRljbDEKWD3cu3ID_pJKkS2qZknrLthuoS2iQLm9tEDVYjZaPs/s320/IMG_9150%5B1%5D.JPG" width="320" /></div><p></p><p>and have recently begun working on fiber preparations from here.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRwS1F0kTrVZqcKFO06mabXuGnMBBNSWiMbusz_dCjqRtwzEth0bTF1E1uyKq-E4S3AoTl4b7_7x4hrwccLrb5CLISXzzOZsW-Xa6GiK3XbuSxzjP5B8wh-vsqCdaaspKuic_0lAQily9r6FJJP0mBfDqi_KCxV7ynSNqRfnf4mNWkmXGlelmVAbS4n3A/s320/IMG_9068%5B1%5D.JPG" width="320" /></div><div><br /></div>Primarily Books and Canning Supplies are remaining to be unpacked and organized, though this part has been started. I also have a few large weaving appendages to give space to and a bit more fiber storage to settle on.<div><br /><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq1UShmJUfJDp29Z83zoUV3ibwRbAKDJBCBSbw1S1OnMvTLnyLgdsbUzFhwHj6ZxXKTixFBsrC629NrinChcyCkp739UURi8QjBEun6fgVudlNHTcCVPVJI9Jbo4_g__8R_5T5idr2KGNq_sEiba_P5N3P3qjMsU-0NWSFLNfgVwFthMFDRXtTV5tJDmI/s320/IMG_9149%5B1%5D.JPG" width="320" /></div><p></p><p>AND... I have to move out... Again.</p><p>One of the blessings of our extremely wet spring (I'm choosing to view this as a blessing), is that the wood floor has expanded... significantly.</p><p>To be clear, all materials grow and shrink with temperature and humidity. How each behaves is well understood and each installation is a unique situation. So there is always an art to the analysis... especially as the climate continues to swing between extremes.</p><p>Anyway, my Studio/Office floor is layed on a concrete slab which conducts temperature and humidity differently than the wood subfloor and crawl space of the rest of the house.</p><p>That, coupled with our extremely wet and therefore humid spring has caused the Studio/Office floor to grow so much that it is buckling. Sections have separated from the substrate, even though a vapor barrier was used.</p><p>So, after reviewing the situation and discussing several potential solutions with the Flooring Installer and Designer/Architect, we decided to remove the entire Studio/Office floor and replace it with an Engineered Solution.</p><p>The exterior surface of the floor will continue to match the remainder of the house, but the under portion will be a series of layups with differing fiber directions.. essentially, a plywood. Rather than the solid hardwood that is currently installed.</p><p>While frustrating, I feel blessed that this happened during our first season with the new floor, and is therefore under warranty.</p><p>This, however, means that I must vacate my Studio/Office once again. Just as I was closing in on feeling settled, once again. sigh.</p><p>Once we know the material lead-time, we will schedule the arrival, demolition, and installation for the new, new floor. I've confirmed that I could take a Tour of just Silk. Then after last month's <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/06/fiber-arts-friday-estes-park-wool.html">Estes Park Wool Market</a>, I also have many batts, rovings, and now rolags prepared from my two <a href="https://clemes.com/">Clemes and Clemes</a> Drum Carding Classes. I still have several <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2019/04/fiber-arts-friday-shave-em-to-save-em.html">Shave 'Em to Save 'Em</a> samples to go, and there is quite a collection of rare and fine fibers, as well as a few really unusual fibers.</p><p>BUT</p><p>I have agreed to give a presentation on the use of Chiengora in Fiber Arts to a local Kennel Club in August, so I have decided to focus on Tibetan Mastiff and spin it multiple ways.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4NRGHjhXoVqY4UmNvGG9bdN7_GJIjViFmetq1QsCo0uvYf9cI7C4_m4Co0u2J7CaKylwWuHuIfCNmmpz6QBylj-uIbx33HL3egQG4twUBBDUGB9lIqTSR__UPNOvefkL9oPOogwR1ujLMKELFqCi_qBjPCtcffljyU7nsXqfSd-zCLmF6qdGrPf3IzHI/s320/IMG_8649%5B1%5D.JPG" width="240" /></div><p>As much as I want to be able to work on other things during this Tour, I think being able to accomplish the items I need for my presentation and hopefully something for the county fair has to be the priority... and acknowledge the fact that I don't (yet) have as much time available to allocate to this event as I want to.</p><p>So I have committed to only the <a href="https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/spinning-dog-fiber-aka---spinnin-chien/4260500/1-25#4">Chiengora Team</a>. It looks like we will be a smaller than usual group this year. Which will be a nice experience.</p><p><a href="https://www.letour.fr/en/">This year's Tour de France</a> includes the second edition of the <a href="https://www.letourfemmes.fr/en/overall-route">Tour de France Femme</a></p><p>So there are 21 Stages, with 2 rest days for the Mens' race and 8 Stages for the Womens' race... or 29 total stages and 28 total race days between July 1 and July 30.</p><p>I'm very much looking forward to spinning this summer.</p><p>Happy Fiber Arts Friday! The Tour begins Tomorrow.</p>Kathryn Rayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12990925295124938262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193450499711699622.post-73466385348542527092023-06-23T07:00:00.010-06:002023-06-23T07:00:00.150-06:00Fiber Arts Friday: New Tools, Drum Carder<p>Back in March of last year (2022) Hubba ordered a Clemes&Clemes <a href="https://clemes.com/product/elite-crankless/">Elite Crankless Drum Carder</a> for me.</p><p>He talked me into the electric version, which I thought was extravagant. However after taking their class <b>Exploring the Drum Carder </b>at the <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2022/07/fiber-arts-friday-estes-park-wool.html">Estes Park Wool Market in June</a> (2022), I am very glad for Hubba's insistence.</p><p>The manual crank is smooth and easy, but having the motor really frees the mind up to focus on batt composition.</p><p>Due to material availability, order backlog, and their show/travel schedule, we knew it would take a while for the carder to be built. Then Henry called right before Thanksgiving 2022 to let me know it was getting ready to ship.</p><p>She arrived about a week after Thanksgiving, just as we were getting ready to move out for our <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/04/home-improvements-kitchen-remodel.html">remodel</a>, so I didn't fully unpack her until recently... actually just after completing the next level Clemes&Clemes class, <b>Adventures in Drum Carding</b> at the most recent <a href="https://kathrynsbrain.blogspot.com/2023/06/fiber-arts-friday-estes-park-wool.html">Estes Park Wool Market</a>.</p><p>Can I just tell you how much I love this packaging? </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both;
