It becomes less accessable and harder to find. Those old pieces of inportant information typed or written on paper from long ago, those old B&W photos are spread out through the generations, and so 1 family has 1 photo, and another has 1 document and so on. How do we find these potential important pieces of ancestry?

Write to everyone, is one option.

Today i wrote a letter every to Gambrill listed in the Australian white pages, about 90. Tomorrow morning i will send them all by snail mail.

Here is the letter i wrote:

G'day,

Myself and my cousin (Tim) have been researching our Gambrill ancestry for about the last year and a half and have put together a tree that goes back to about 1650. This tree is accessable to everyone online at my website (link below).

We are currently sourcing copies of old photos, documents/information/anything in order to bring as much Gambrill history together as possible.

Information and photos are passed down from generation to generation, family to family, and unfortunatley there is many things that had'nt passed us by - those black and white photos from long ago, or an old document – these precious items all add up to give an account of our ancestry, often though we dont ever see them as someone else has them.

Half the reason why we are here is because convict William Gambrill, whom was born in 1821 in Woodnesborough, Kent, UK stole a few watches from a Mr.Dilnot, and was sentenced to'10 years transportation'. He arrive in NSW in 1839. His first marriage was to Sarah Ransley, Sarah died just short of 30 years of age and had 5 children to William. William then married another Sarah, Sarah Etherden and had a further 10 children. I stem from his first wife, Sarah Ransley – perhaps you decend from one of Williams 15 children.

William is buried in the Macgrath Hills cemetery in NSW, but the council looking after the cemetery does not no where exactly he is buried. If you have any documents that mention his plot number, please can you let us know this information.

We are purchasing all birth, marriage, death documents for our Gambrill line, which is being done gradually - perhaps you have some of these documents you could copy and share. Its important to take history from documented evidence where possible. This makes a family tree, solid.

I am also interested in any specific information/photos about Robert Gambrill - his parents were Edwin Gambrill and Aida. Robert died in 1993.

Hoping you might have something about Gambrill ancestry you can share.

Drop us a line – email or phone or write.

Please take a look at my website and blog.

http://bobbyfamilytree.blogspot.com

www.bobbyfamilytree.com

email: bobbyfamilytree@gmail.com or t_gambrill@hotmail.com

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,

Bobby.

(*Address withheld!)

Preserving our ancestry.

Feed

Lucy Jane Cooper Administrators A/C

Interesting info to followup with Lucy Jane Cooper. You see, my cousin Mariya has been waiting for my call, and finally i was able to phone her. Here is what happened...

I first needed to find someone whom can speak Ukrainian, which i did. I phoned the local Ukraine community, and explained my situation... basically I found a cousin, and needed to phone her, but with someone whom can speak Ukrainian language. No problems - it can be done she said.

Good.

So i organise quite a few questions, type them out, and mark them 1 to 15. Next i get a phone card for cheap calling rates, it was suggested i get a 'click' phone card, but i couldnt see this one so i got Oasis.

I leave my house to meet this person whom is making the phone call. I get there and wait a short while for her whilst she finishes her class.. We meet and briefly chatted and then headed off to another room where we phoned. She enters the code for the Oasis phone card, (the talk time was for 50mins) and phoned the land line in the Ukraine - a child answers and plays with the phone whilst my caller tries to ask for his mother, but the child hangs up. So we phone back on the mobile, Mariya doesnt answer. For some reason, Oasis took 2X10 mins increments off our 2 calls, even though the first call was for 30secs, and the 2nd call no one answered. We phoned again the land line, a male adult answered - he didnt trust whom we were. So he didnt want to speak any further. Great.

We take a short break, and phone back in about 15mins. We first phoned the land line, no answer at all now. Oasis had taken another 10min increment off my call card time. We phoned again, but now on the mobile - Oasis said we could make the call because we didnt have enough credit - go figure -we spoke only on 2 calls, 30sec, and about 2mins. And now our time is up, we only have 10 mins left but we need more credit to phone again. RIPPED OFF.

So next we use my mobile, without any calling cards.

Things weren't looking good for this connection with Mariya, i was getting rather dissapointed as i also didnt want to take up to much of my callers time. We tried the mobile again - bingo, we got through and Mariya answered. My caller asked away all the questions, and Mariya answered what she could, or said she will find/make enquiries. My caller wrote the answers down according to the question number on a peice of paper so that way it was easier later to recognise which answer was for which question -as trying to phone, listen and write can be a bit of a mission - i guess woman are better at multi-taking though.

It was good to finally get in contact with her, even though i wasnt the one doing the talking i could at least hear her as the speakerphone was on.

My caller said we were ripped off with this Oasis phone card, and i guess she is right - i will not use them EVER again, and i suggest anyone else whom phones the Ukraine, not to use them.

Big thanks to my Ukrainian speaker whom made the call for me.

Feed

Upgrade of website to TNG

My family tree website will be getting a renovation within the next week.... or so. I'll be using TNG.

Hoping installation goes OK as i'm not clued up at website stuff, however it does come with setup guide, and of course i can use the TNG forums for further questions.

One new feature i'm wanting to implement is to add a baby photo of all living people. Rather than having a empty boring page with the words 'Living', i think the photo would at least give the page a bit of a life! I dont think many (if any) would object as it reveals nothing about the person. So i do welcome a baby photo of you...

Also, i have ordered Theodore Gambrills birth certificate, and a document about convict William Gambrill, ticket of leave or something... cant remember exaclty, anyway.

UPDATE: (8 April) The new website is up and running, although its far from being finished. I think its going to take quite sometime to add all the photos/docs and whatnot although the basic info is their to see. Apologies.

Feed

Grandfather Naturalization documents 'householders certificates'

Another document my grandfather, Wasyl had to organize for his naturalization. He would be able to take a light job if necessary he would be able, and probably would work in a singlet, which would mean no pressure on clavicles. He could do no work at all, at times if his injury got troublesome.

Whereas: as a soldier on active service he would have to march in full equipment with one shoulder strap pressing on injured clavicle while suspending long of his heavy kit & besides he couldnt always take it easy or do something when injury was troubling him.

Therefore he would be unfit for a soldier but quite fit for his usual occuaption as a civilian, or an easier one if it became available.

<signed>

Feed

Blatchford DP Ship newspaper article

My grandparents and aunt travelled to Australia in this ship in 1950 as DP's. This article was published in the Sydney Morning Herald 18 February, 1950. Read into it how you will...

The article says:

Migrants say Many Reds in DP ship.

Sydney, Saturday. - Migrants in the U.S Army transport General Blatchford claimed today that many of the 1222 displaced persons aboard were communists.

The General Blatchford arrived in Sydney today from Naples.

None of the migrants from east european countries would say why or how they escaped.

They claimed that a number of "planted" communists on board would inform the authorities in the countries from which they escaped and their relatives in those countries would suffer.

Thirty per cent of those on board were former nazi slave-labourers, and the other 70 percent, claimed to have escaped from communist dominated countries.

One migrant, a professional man, said that he had escaped from the communists in Czechoslavakia. He claimed there were 30 active communists in the ship.

The communists are alleged to be Jugoslavs, Russians and Poles.

Feed

Post WW2 DP work reference in Nurnberg.

My grandfather was mostly in Nurnberg, Germany between 1942 and 1950. All the short term ones are the gathering up of the documents, photos and a couple of other relatively easy tasks - these are all ongoing, but not a major cost.

Current medium to long term goals:

1) My convict ancestor (William Gambrill) no longer has a gravestone at his cemetery, so a replacement is needed. Monies will need to be organized for a replacement.
2) Tour of forced labour places in Nurnberg where both my grandparents were during WW2.
3) Ukraine - Kosiv region, My grandfathers place of birth.
4) South East Poland, my grandmothers place of birth, and also the place where she was forced from her home in 1940, and sent to Germany for forced labour - sadly, she never went to her home village again.

5) DNA - and this is a ongoing expense, and not a cheap one.

6) Trip to UK - Woodnesborough, Barfreston, Nonington, grave sites and various other locations related to Gambrill ancestry in England

7) I think with any family tree its a good idea to have a focal point where you can write as much as possible about a specific period in an ancestors life - choosing from you maternal and paternal side. A easy way to decide whom to write about, is if the ancestor was involved in something that has been documented in some way, ie war, convict, murder, etc, etc. In my case, it will be both my grandparents whom where in Nurnberg during WW2, and so i shall find out what i can about the events leading up to them being in Nazi Germany, and where and how and what they did during the war. On my paternal side, i plan on gathering up as much information about my convict ancestor William Gambrill. These both will be ongoing, and will take many years.

Feed

Time in Nurnberg during WW2 - Polish 'K' names

This document contains folks whom has a surname starting with 'K', and is of Polish nationality and shows period of time in Nurnberg during WW2. Sydney had a wrestling background, so you'll notice a wrestling slant to the story.

"THE BIG FIGHT

OCTOBER 23RD 1942 AND OUR 'CROWD' WAS JUST INSIDE OUR OWN 'WIRE' ON THE EDGE OF THE "DEVIL'S GARDEN" (MINE-FIELDS), WAITING FOR ZERO HOUR, AND THE NOISIEST ARTILLERY BARRAGE THE WORLD HAD KNOWN TO THAT DATE. WE WERE TO ADVANCE AT ZERO PLUS FIVE MINUTES. ALL WATCHES HAD BEEN SYNCHRONISED AND AS WE CHATTED IN THE LEE OF OUR VEHICLES, ONE CHAP WHO HAD BEEN AN ANNOUNCER AT ALL-IN WRESTLING MATCHES BEFORE THE WAR, GAVE US THE FOLLOWING INTRODUCTION TO THE BATTLE OF ALEMEIN. TIMING IT TO PERFECTION, HIS ANNOUNCEMENT ENDED JUST AS THE BARRAGE OPENED UP. AND HERE IS HOW HE ANNOUNCED THE FIGHT:
"LADIES -SORRY- GENTLEMEN! INTRODUCING THE CONTESTANTS FOR BIGGEST FIGHT OF ALL TIME! A FIGHT TO THE FINISH WITH NO HOLDS BARRED, BETWEEN - ON MY RIGHT AT 220 lbs. (219 lbs. of brawn and muscle, one lbs. of brain) THE DESERT FOX ERWIN ROMMEL!! AND ON MY LEFT, AT 190 lbs. (160 lbs. of brawn 201bs, of steel and 10 lbs. of brain) THE DESERT MASTER, BERNARD MONTGOMERY!! SECONDS OUT OF THE RING, FIRST AND FINAL ROUND...." AND BOOM WENT THE HUNDREDS OF GUNS.

Cpl. S.J. Regiment as a Bren-gun Carrier driver. The Support Coy. section to which I was attached, contained quite a few individuals who made me quite sick of their continual talk of how wonderfully efficient the "enemy" was. My answer to all this was that "the only good 'enemy' was a dead one!" This phrase rankled my new 'mates' - but I was to prove my point, and it took the Alemein Battle to help me prove it.
The night of the Battle, T loaded two tons of Mortar Bombs and four Mortars into my Bren Carrier and followed my section into action. At the German side of the minefield, I was held up while my section advanced and took a position about a mile inside the German lines. A runner was sent back to the gap in the wire - where I was waiting- and I was instructed to go forward and deliver the Mortars and the Bombs to my Section. Given a star as a bearing I went forward in as straight a line as possible. Suddenly, in a bursting shell flash I saw a dead 'enemy' lying directly in the line of my direction. I swerved smartly to the right and around a slight outcrop of rock and then came back in line with my "bearing" star.
Well I delivered my 'goods' and returned to the gap in the wire, near which a temporary Coy. H.Q. had been established.
First light next morning and surveying the battle-field of the previous night, 7 casually followed the path of the tracks of my Bren Carrier, and could clearly see how I had swerved to avoid going over the corpse of the 'enemy'. On closer examination, I saw to my horror that had I not swerved, I would have gone over a trip-wire attached to a 'Booby-trap' containing no fewer than four Teller land-mines! (I enclose a photograph I took of the mines) The dead man was not attached to the booby-trap in any way. He had been shot and had fallen in a position to save my life.
You can well imagine the chargin of the pro-enemy element of my Section when I proved to them that "the only good 'enemy', was a dead one".

(Note to the Editor: To avoid unpleasantness, I have used the word 'enemy' and not German. The corpse was that of a huge fellow, a member of[ fire Afrika Corps and wearing the badge of the 90th Light Div.- Rommel's crack Division in the desert. I spent two days and nights near him and grew quite fond of 'Hans', as I named him.
Sydney Wilson."

The photograph of the mines that he refers to, i do not have, nor do i know where this was story was published, as it seems to have been.

Feed

Ship S.S Blatchford

My grandparents and aunt came to Australia in 1950, from Germany. Both Grandparents were in Nurnberg during the war working as forced labour.

They applied to the IRO (international relief organization) to leave Germany after the war, and to live else where.

A document dated 29th November, 1949 - is marked as Accepted, and this refers to being allowed to travel to Australia to start a new life. Whether they chose Australia, or it was chosen for them , i do not know. So shortly after, they made there way to Naples (with my grandmother being 3 months pregnant), along with plenty of other Displaced people and set sail on the S.S Blatchford on 18th January and arrived at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on the 22nd of February, 1950.

According to immigration papers, the ship travelled with 1222 people, and upon docking, 2 people were sent to Hospital by central district ambulance - W.Williamsky, aged 3 year for pneumonia and Zofija Abelite, aged 74 years for Cardiac Arrythymia. The rest of the new Australians proceeded to the Department of Immigration Reception and Training centre, Bathurst, from trains located at Wharf no.13 Pyrmont at 9.10pm, 10.15pm, and 12 midnight.

"The passengers baggage was loaded direct from the vessel into luggage vans which were sealed by customs officers before being dispatched on special trains."

"Certificates of exemption for a period of two years have been issued in favour of each of these new Australians, and handed to them."

After Bathurst, my grandparents and aunt went to live at Greta Camp.
Feed

John Liddell and Ellen Ann Fox Headstone

The burial place of the parents of Aida Victoria Liddell - John Liddell And Ellen Ann Fox.
