METU Project Update!

The Municipal Energy Tune Up (METU) Program, in partnership with the POM Wonderful Philanthropy grant program, leveraged funding to complete an insulation project at the Veterans’ Memorial Hall in Avenal in December 2017.

Avenal is a rural, hard-to-reach community as well as a disadvantaged community (DAC) and their Veterans’ Memorial Hall serves many facets of the community. The hall is used as a cooling and activity center for the elderly, an after-school program for children, a community theater, and to distribute meals to those in need.

Measures installed for energy savings were: attic insulation, floor insulation, radiant barrier foil at the roof deck, and sealing of the duct work and penetrations in the attic.

Original estimated savings for the work was a 30% reduction in the building’s heating and cooling expenses. But once the post-project summer months of 2018 were compared to the summer months in previous years, 2018 consumption is 40% less than that of previous years. The savings from this project is significant to the city and will be used to continue and expand much needed services to the community.

After such a successful project in Avenal, we are seeking to expand this project to various veterans community facilities throughout the rest of the WONDERFUL territory: Wasco, McFarland and Sanger/Del Rey.

KICKOFF WORKSHOP TO LAUNCH STATE SAFETY RULEMAKING FOR UTILITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND LOCAL COORDINATION

The CPUC’s Safety and Enforcement Division, Risk Assessment Section, will hold a public workshop June 26, 2018, at the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) headquarters in Mather, Calif. The program will begin at 9:30 am and conclude at 4:30 pm and remote access accommodations will be provided. This first workshop is part of the Water and Electric Utilities’ Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Response Plans proceeding (R.15-06-009), expected to continue into 2019.

Is your city or county planning to complete or update a climate action plan, sustainability plan or energy action plan? The 2018 CAP Cohort Training Session is a structured technical-assistance program to guide California local governments to scope out and be well prepared to develop their CAP. The Training Session is available through the SEEC program at no cost to local governments.

The 14-week Session will run from the Week of July 30 through November 9, 2018. Participants should not expect to complete their CAP during the cohort session; rather, they will complete the training with a clear scope for what their CAP will focus on and cover, an understanding of how to use the SEEC ClearPath tool to support their CAP, and a clear set of next steps.

Topics covered will include: Deciding your community's goals for the plan; conducting vulnerability assessments; community engagement and equity; using the SEEC ClearPath tool to forecast emissions change, develop high-level scenarios, and to analyze specific actions; defining metrics and monitoring; and thinking about local government influence, internal capacity and community partners.

SJVCEO was a lucky recipient of an environmental community grant from Southern California Gas Company (SoCal Gas) to host educational assemblies, Natural Gas Camp, with students in the San Joaquin Valley. During the assemblies students are exposed to the basics of natural gas, natural gas vehicles as well as how to conserve natural gas.

Yesterday SJVCEO held its first ever gas camp at Meadow Lane Elementary in Lemoore, CA. Students from three sixth grade classes rotated to different stations to learn about natural gas. During the 1.5 hour assembly students had hands on experience with gas meters, advanced gas meters and a CNG street sweeper from the City of Lemoore. Students were asked questions during each session and three lucky students were crowned Natural Gas Camp Champs and went home with Nest Thermostats. Thanks to Proteus Inc. the installation of the Nest thermostats to each household is at no cost. Each student was also given bags to take home that contained ways to save at home as well as fun giveaways from SoCal Gas and the City of Lemoore.

Seeing a younger generation excited about natural gas and learning about what the future holds for the commodity was exciting! SJVCEO and all involved were so surprised that students were so aware of sustainability efforts with natural gas.

We cant thank all of partners enough for all of the help making this first Natural Gas Camp a success!
