WOYDW: What's on your BOAT, Wednesday? Lara Nance Rocks the Boat!

What's on your desk, Lara Nance?

First of all, I live on a boat, so space is very tight. This is not a desk, it's the table normal people would use to eat on. But since it's always covered with my writing tools, it's become my desk.

There's my computer - necessary for writing of course, My external hard drive containing files from the past four computers I've owned that crashed. My I-Pad, good for lot's of things like playing games when I take a break from writing. Book Two of the steampunk trilogy, Rescue from the Baron - important because I can't remember my own character's names and other important happenings and have to look them up while I'm writing the third book. #lame or #Alzheimer's. Wine glass - no need to explain. Dog treats - for our doggie overlord, Rio. Christmas flowers and card from my hubby - necessary love to keep the writing engine going. Above the flowers is my marketing and publishing calendar for 2013 taped to the mast. Last but not least is my noise cancelling headphones and I-Pod to use when my hubby is watching television, which is pretty much anytime he's home.

Optimist Lady Arabella (Belle) Trunkett is a punky, sassy female with a an adventurous streak whose father, Sir John, Lord High Minister of Urbannia is on the verge of signing a peace treaty for lasting peace between the East and West countries, Urbannia and Gandiss. Then when Conrad Bellows, her father's assistant is stabbed by a Gandiss dagger and her father is kidnapped by ruthless ruffians, it soon becomes clear that someone has become threatened by this alliance, but can they really blame the Gandiss out of hand and cause more political upheaval?

Taking the situation into her own hands, Belle decides to charter an airship to take her, her steadfast butler Jasper, and her young stuttering friend Benji, and fly them to a dangerous area in Carabarras where she believes her father has be taken to. Along the way the airship she hired crashes and she is forced to transfer to the only other airship willing to go to such dangerous lands. Trouble is the dashing captain of the ship is non-other than her ex-fiancé Rett, and he is the last person on earth she trusts since he jilted her at the altar eight years ago. Yet, much to her annoyance, trust him she must, as it's the only way she can rescue her father, not that Rett is that happy about having her as a passenger on his ship when things are so awkward between them.

The Mad Scientist is a cleverly thought out Steampunk adventure, pumped with plenty of action and political rebellion and set in a fantasy world (not unlike Jay Lake's "Mainspring: Clockwork Earth series"), which takes us away from the usual Victorian British Empire or American Wild West themes and flies us into a whole new world filled with fancy contraptions made from brass, cogs and polished wood and powered by steam technology. As the mystery surrounding her father's kidnapping is slowly revealed, I watched my favourite characters, Belle and Benji learn more about themselves and grow. I also enjoyed the way knowledgeable Benji became “Kef Benjamin", and spectacularly used it to their advantage.The book ends with a gripping tease, which continues just like a series in the next book, and whilst the story came to a satisfying end, you just know there is more to come!

From a secret group of deadly assassins - the Sarcs of Carabarras, to the Mandagols and sky pirates, Belle must face them all, but her hardest task by far (and one which was highly entertaining), was fighting her feelings for that scoundrel Rett who once broke her heart yet ultimately feels the same way and will do whatever he can to to protect Belle and save her father if it means he can regain her trust.

Lara Nance captures the textures of life in a "Steampunk" world well, and creates larger-than-life characters, combining different empires, political and cultural tensions with a touch of romance for a "full steam ahead" tale. A fun read, which I powered through.

In Therian Promise, Kyle has to prove to himself as much as every one else that he is worthy of his seat on the Prime Council, mostly because of his youth. You see, he's the youngest feline shifter ever to hold a position on it and feels he has to do so. Now the wolves have discovered a "latent" female with incredibly powerful potential and this might be just the thing to prove himself: bring her in before the wolves make her one of them and turn her into an enemy- one of unknown dimension.

Ava trusts no one and when a vision sends her into flight mode once more, she finds herself stepping right into the hands of a man whose touch turns her blood to fire instead of fear. Now she must decide whether to give her fragile trust to a shifter whose soul calls to hers or take flight and possibly deny herself the future she's wanted forever.

I liked this one because the journey to life was both emotionally and physically trying. The main characters had to examine feelings they'd never encountered which made me chuckle at times, even though it probably wasn't intentional, while on the run from people out to use and abuse Ava. The action was good, the sex hot and the depth of the characters satisfying-the only disappointment- I didn't like the ending. Though I'm hoping the beginning of the next one satisfies my curiosity.

It sucks being a vampire who wants something she's afraid of; the simple touch of a human. There are lines she's afraid she might cross that keep her from finding that fulfilment, so she's a very lonely lady. Until one night Fate decides to take a hand and deliver unto her the very thing she craves, in the form of two very hunky shifters. Jane has never in all her decades felt as confused as now.

Jude is an alpha with several things on his mind,not least of which is the woman they've been tracking who smells like home. Only he's not prepared for the fact that not only he,but his second, Cray are destined to be her mate. Now they have to learn to share, find the rogue out for revenge and keep Jane safe at the same time, for this ousted pack member has already killed once.

For a good quick read full of steamy sex, humour (whether intentional or just my perverted sense of) and strong characters Calista Fox's Claim Me is a fine choice. Jane has the kind of alpha female confidence that makes for great dialogue, while both Jude and Cray are sexy, strong men who learn that sometimes the joke is on them. The biggest disappointment for me was the length (but I always like more than less) because just as I was getting into all of it, their part was over. Knowing this is part of a series I still like a little more in-depth exploration of their stories, but it's still well-rounded, complete and I enjoyed it.

Kathleen Paulson took on the job of head librarian in Mayville Heights, Minnisota. While out walking, exploring the area around her rented house, she met two cats who followed her home. Within a short time, Kathleen learned neither cat was your everyday normal variety of feline. Owen disappeared when he wanted to be sneaky and Hercules passed through solid doors when he didn't want to stay home. Then Kathleen found a body on stage at the Stratton. By the end of the day everyone in Mayville seemed to be on the suspect list with Kathleen in the number one position.

Overall the book is a good read. It held my attention from the beginning, but that isn't unusual. Very few material clues scattered throughout the story and clues picked up while listening to the women talk keeps the reader guessing until the end who the killer is. Description of the town was either minimal or well hidden amongst all the calm action because once I had finished the book, I seemed to have had a good image of the whole town in my mind. I liked what I saw in that image. Not much romance entered into the happenings, but since Curiosity Thrilled the Cat is Book 1 a series, perhaps romance will develop and grow solid between the detective and Kathleen. Anne's been using this site that caters to women for quite awhile without knowing that in reality the model who has become her all-time favorite is her lifelong best friend. Now she's in a quandry she's not sure how to handle; she and her best bud are becoming roommates. How's a girl supposed to live with a guy who stars in every fantasy she has?

Chase doesn't know that Anne has discovered his secret,but it's an outlet for all these repressed feelings. . A friends with benefits package sounds tempting to both,especially when a single dance starts a fire even he's not sure how to put out. But the no-strings arrangement is starting to sour when emotions neither expected rise up and bite them when they're not looking.

I love to read a story that can arouse many emotions and make you "see" what the words paint. Whether intentional or not the author, Saranna DeWylde, made me chuckle, shake my head, wonder if that can really happen-well, I'm sure you get the point. The biggest disappointment for me with this read was that the situation between them when that "bite" took place was there wasn't enough exploration of their feelings. While fully rounded as is, being an old fogey, I like to get into the hows, whys, and where's it going.....still a good read.

This is Nancy Holzner's second book about Vicky, a shapeshifter and demon slayer. If you have a problem with demons then she will come in and fix it, even while you dream if that's where they are haunting you. She is the girl to call. No job is too small.

I was not in love with book 1, it was good, but for some reason I had issues with it. But I still wanted to know what happened and here something showed up that gave me that drive to really want to know. Now I can't tell you because that is a spoiler. But it gets interesting when something bad happens..is happening...The stakes are high, the fight is on, there is drama and most of all, questions. Questions that made me sit up in my chair wanting to scream. I needed to know, and then I know. And then, well then I needed to see it finished. What can I say, something good happens (ok bad, but you get the picture). It's interesting and it will keep you turning the page faster and faster.

It's hard to say anything about this book without spoiling it all. Vicky will fight for her life again. Things are not easy in Boston. Her werewolf boyfriend is in DC trying to give everyone rights. The zombies in Deadtown are preparing for a concert and demons are popping up as usual.

Romance then, Kane is away in DC and she misses him. All while seeing the human cop Daniel, whom she also likes. But there is never a triangle going on. It's more that she is dating, Kane is always busy. But I did start to like Kane more in this one.

The book is better than the first in my opinion, and hopefully it will get better and better.

Kameron McBride receives a letter from a court in Oregon saying she has been appointed the executor of Salvador Vasco's estate. She decides, with much prompting from her mom and best friend Sue, to go.

After arriving in Oregon, the frustration of getting lost in the near-desert territory is offset by meeting a tall, dark and handsome Deputy Mitch whose very arrival at the spot runs would-be attackers away. This was just a beginning. Before long, Kam finds herself in the middle of a seven year old murder with danger lurking behind her throughout her brief stay in Rosewood. Mitch becomes her protector only to be gone when the real danger appears.

Marva Dasef's Missing, Assumed Dead is a short book at 127 pages, but it is packed with excitement and raw nerve. Each event follows the previous one with logical precision. The story reads fast just the way I like them to do.

The heroine, Kameron McBride, is a daring woman, and, despite her claims to the contrary, she cannot take care of herself. Enter the hero: brave, courageous, and handsome Mitch Caldwell. Both characters are well-rounded people and still just a normal woman and man. Believable? Yes. The setting is exciting for me with my love of old western movies and the novels written by Zane Grey. These I grew up on and Mitch reminds me of the heroes portrayed in these. And the touch of romance always adds a sweet touch.

Lizzy Greenley, female werewolf, who up until this moment thought she knew where her life was going. Now she wonders if this train-wreck she's trying to muddle through will ever approximate her original plans for a life with football boyfriend, Jeremy Sanderson. All she wanted was to marry him, have babies, raise horses and teach. Now she'd appreciate just staying ahead of those hot on their trail.

Jeremy has been taking an enhanced steroid made from werewolf blood known as W. The problem? He's human and this drug tends to have consequences to it that make it illegal to administer to anyone. To save his life, Libby breaks the law, now they're both on the run-from the pack, rogues and trial.

I have to admit that the romantic scenes need a bit of polishing in this one as they came across a bit repetitive and bland, but the premise is good, the plot strong and the characters memorable. Just when I got comfortable with where things were going there would be a new element added to send it in a bit of a different direction, which kept it interesting. There were a few places where some of these twists weren't as smooth as they could have been, but they were minor.

The segues into the erotic scenes were a bit stilted at times making me go back and re-read the beginning of it to see if perhaps I read it too quickly. The strong plot and hearty characters still make Lee Pearce's, Rapture's Claim, a good read.

My Review:

Dark Enchantment is the third book in the Dark magick series by Anya Bast, but even though I have not read of the previous books I could still read it without feeling lost at all, as there is always a new couple on the horizon and new things that happen.

Charlotte Bennett fears the Fae, just as much as her father dislikes them, so she is glad that they are all behind walls of Piefferburg and can't get out. But when someone pulls her there she does her best to cope with their requests, desperately trying not to fall for a Fae called Kieran, the hot dream guy who started it all.

I like the world that Bast creates. A world where all Fae live in their own city and can't get out. Druids guard the entrance and the hate runs deep between them. But the Fae has plans, which I doubt can turn out well since most seem to fear them even if there is a group who want them free. Still I do not know why the "bad guys" are not behind walls themselves. Shouldn't people fear them too?

Since this is pnr it's a given that Charlotte and Kieran will fall for each other. But how is the question since she fears them and he. Well he has got issues! But I liked how it happens and they do seem right for each other. Together the passion sure flows between these two.

This month I am pleased to introduce you to author, Alberta Ross.

When asked for a bio, this is what Alberta shared with me:

I spent the first part of my adult life travelling the world, the middle years studying and now have settled down to write. From the first part I have endless photographs and memories from the second I have a BSc Hons and a MA. Now in this part everything comes together.

Over the years my interests have expanded, as has my book and music collection. A short list would include reading (almost anything) science, opera, folk, gardening, philosophy, crazy patchwork, freeform crochet, ethics, social history, cooking (and eating of course) anthropology and of course climate change and sustainability.

My parents gave me, apart from a love of reading and music, an interest and curiosity in everything which in itself gives a total inability to be bored and for this I am always grateful.

Alberta Ross is also a Goodreads Author, and below are her latest books on offer.

The Sefuty Chronicles

In 2060 the catastrophic results of climate change lead to mass migrations, whole nations fleeing rising seas and desertification. The world at war: land, water and survival the prize. The survivors split, most scrambling to the purpose-built cities the others fortifying their settlements behind the false security of rings of landmines. Genetic manipulations lead to populations in the cities being freed from greed and violence but this has resulted in the destruction of the drive which made the human race so successful. Ellen’s Tale: being the first of the Sefuty Chronicles

2111: In a world devastated by climate change, Ellen, sheltered child of the City falls in love against all odds with Bix, a geneticaly manipulated soldier. Unable to face a life apart they have to find a way together in an uncertain world. Two researchers, using archival material, explore the events leading to this love affair and its consequences.

The Storyteller’s Tale: being the second of the Sefuty Chronicles

It is 2113 Ellen and Bix, their children and Jack have moved out of the City, settled in Blaisemill to gain skills for survival in the wilderness. They start opening up the beleaguered settlements and establishing Trade Routes. Jack takes on Keira Baha, Blaisemill’s black sheep, to be their guide. Many in the village consider she is mad as well as bad and that the Ferals have made a mistake.

Jack’s Tale: being the third of the Sefuty Chronicles

2116: Imprisoned behind rings of mines, deprived of resources, settlements battle famine, natural disasters and despair. The land to the west and north of the City untouched by any law for over 50 years is a more perilous place than they had imagined and soon our companions face conflict and danger. Disaster threatens the close knit band and relationships begin to founder under the stresses of war.

While a young boy, Clay learns quickly there are rough times ahead because a child who has grown up in an Indian environment is not welcomed by many white people.

At thirteen years old, Clay escapes from being slave to the Apaches only to become a slave to the White man. By chance he escapes and disappears. Now he is all grown up and he has come back to town as Clay. Clay wanted only to see McGee who had helped him escape the Apaches, but the Hoodys think he has returned to avenge himself. And what of Te, a woman who has been reared by a different tribe? "What's your white name?" Clay asks. "I have none. I am one of The People. I am Witoka Te. Never will I be white again." Will she help him or hurt him? Clay is going to find out real soon.

This story brings to mind the old westerns I watched on the television while growing up. Westerns have always been a favorite of mine. I believe Ms. Wills did a fine job writing up this story and portraying the problems this little white boy had when he escaped from the Indians. Being a small part of Indian myself, I learned the hard way that many white people are prejudiced against many of the races inhabiting our world today. It is tough going for a child. I believe most any reader would find something in this story he/she liked. Events flowed smoothly; writing good.

About the Author:

Larion Wills, a multi-genre author, also writes under the name of Larriane Wills. From science fiction to western romances she holds up to her tag of 'two names, one author, thousands of stories.' Born in Oklahoma, but raised in Arizona she feels a native to the state and has settled in the high desert country. In a quiet, rural area with a family who tolerates her writer's single-mindedness, she presents us with a series of unique westerns while still producing contemporary romances, many laced with paranormal settings, all with strong characterizations and suspenseful plots, capable of dragging you into a story in a genre you thought you didn't care for previously. I must say that Kalayna Price's first Alex Craft book was entertaining, but it got really good at the end, so much so, I got truly curious and excited about reading the next in the series.

Alex is a Grave Witch and can raise shades, not ghosts, but lingering shadows, and because of this she is pulled into something darker. Someone is killing people and now that person is after her too. To her help she has a detective, Falin, who anyone would get at once is the love interest. Sure I like him, he sounds hot and after these two have worked through their issues with each other things might happen. But yes there is someone else too and someone who I sure have my fingers crossed for; Death. When he showed up at the scene I was smitten at once. He did not say much but I am obviously on his team. Since she talks to the dead she sees him around a lot and what is there not to like.

This book has a lot of questions in it. Who to trust? What is going on? Who is the bad guy and who exactly is Falin? Not to mention, Death. There is also things happening all the time so no chance to grow bored here.

The world is also interesting as the Fae and witches came out a few decades ago and now they all live together. Not peacefully but getting by. We do not learn that much about the Fae but I would like to know more, since they keep to themselves.

All in all a good book, that got even better. I do want to read more and keep my hopes up for Death. I just hope Alex sees it, too.

A nice debut to a series that hopefully will keep on getting better since she sure seems to know how to twist things around.
