An autoimmune disorder means that one's body is having an immune response to its own cells. Rheumatoid arthritis, like other forms of arthritis manifests in the joints, appearing as chronic inflammation and pain. It can attack people of all ages and there is no sure-fire cure. It can be handled with medication and helped with surgery.

The hand and wrist region have multitudes of tiny joints in it. The hands are relied upon to perform constant intricate maneuvers that one tends to take for granted as long as everything is working well and is pain free. Writing, cooking, working in the garden, to name just a few tasks; require much fine motor precision by our hands.

All of these delicate movements appear seamless because each maneuver is cushioned by the cartilage interspersed between the joints. If the padding of cartilage erodes, the human body will try to help out by sending a fluid in order to act as a cushioning device. This will unfortunately also cause pain due to the swelling and stretching. The range of motion becomes impaired, as well.

Once a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis has been made, a physician will want to monitor the patient's condition by means of x-rays. A rigorous regime of medication, rest, specific exercises to strengthen the joints and patient awareness will all help to control the damage that can occur with an unmanaged case. Medication can help with pain as well as to minimize inflammation. Surgery may be an option that may help, as well.

There are different surgeries for helping with arthritis in the hand and wrist region. This type of operation would require the extremely specialized skills of a physician who focuses specifically on the intricate workings of the hand.

Surgical options include those that would preserve the joint, those that fuse the joint and joint replacement. Preservation of the joint is preferable, but the choice will be dependent on each patient's individual case. Many joints in the wrist and hand region may be replaced with an adaptive device made of ceramic material, metal or even a long wearing plastic. Recent technology has advanced the design of these devices in order to enable them to be long lasting with optimum functionality.

Post-op, a patient will most likely need to participate in physical therapy designed for hand, wrist, and joint recovery. A support device such as a splint will probably need to be worn. After a period of rest and recovery, the hand should be ready to perform tasks again with ease.
In fact, taking high quality fish oil capsules is one of the simplest ways to prevent arthritis and other inflammation related diseases. Let me tell you why.

Fish based oil contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) - two very important omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids are well known for their anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties. They reduce inflammation throughout the body and prevent health problems like rheumatoid arthritis. These omega 3 fatty acids can reduce the swelling and the pain usually associated with arthritis. They also support the connective tissues in your limbs and improve joint function. In other words, by taking fish based oil, arthritis can not only be treated, but can also be prevented.

The anti inflammatory properties of omega 3 fatty acids are so well documented that a lot of health experts actually believe that taking high quality fish based oil capsules could be more beneficial for people suffering from arthritis than taking medications like aspirin. There are two reasons why they believe so.

1. A high quality fish oil capsule made from cold water fish like hoki, which contains a lot of omega 3 fatty acids, is more effective than aspirin at treating arthritis.

2. There are some side effects associated with the long term use of medications like aspirin. Fish oil capsules, purified by molecular distillation, do not cause any side effects and hence are very safe to consume.

As you can see, taking fish oil for arthritis is not only effective, but also safe. However, this does not mean that all types of arthritis can be treated with fish oil capsules. Some types of arthritis, osteoarthritis in particular, cannot be treated with fish based oil or any other health supplement. So, it is always important to consult your doctor before you take any health supplement.

When it comes to fish based oil, arthritis is not the only health problem it can treat. When taken regularly, it can reduce the risks of a number of problems including asthma, hay fever, allergies, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders, learning disabilities in children, skin problems, eye problems, and cancer.

It supports brain function and improves your memory, concentration, and reasoning skills. It also boosts your immune system. In other words, a regular dose of fish based oil can help you live a long, healthy life. So, start taking fish oil capsules today and stay healthy.
Hello there. My name is Glenn Prescot, a professional fitness trainer and nutritionist from Europe. I decided to write this article about Flexcin, a Natural Remedy for Joint ailments like Arthritis, Gout, Fibromyalgia etc, in order to share with you my experience with this product. My mother (age 76) has been suffering from Arthritis for several years. At the beginning stages of the problem she was treating the disorder with conventional medicine, like Anti-Inflammatory Painkillers (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs-NSAIDs) and Corticosteroids. However, several side effects were involved with those medicines such as stomach upsets, irritations, ulcers, weak skin with bruises etc. To help my mother, I started searching to find natural and reliable remedies for Arthritis that would be efficient in providing relief and would not have any side effects. That's when I stumbled upon Flexcin, for which I got also a recommendation from our family doctor. Flexcin is definitely a remedy that can help you, like it helped my mother as well. She is doing considerably better now with Arthritis, without the side effects. Read on to find out more about Flexcin's healing qualities.

Flexcin is a completely natural product (made in USA) that has been on the market for over ten years now. Millions of sufferers have benefited from the efficient relief it provides within a relatively short period after it is first used. You will notice a reduction in the pain you experience constantly in your knees, buttocks, feet and arms. Sufferers can also expect to find substantial relief from back pain and muscle pain as well as from the excessive joint aches. Flexcin is effective in treating not only Arthritis, but also Gout, Rheumatoid Arthritis and other joint and muscle ailments - conditions that are common with the elderly, but can affect middle aged and even young people. Bursitis and Fibromyalgia can also be efficiently treated with this remarkable natural remedy.

Probably the main advantage of Flexcin is that it is a completely natural product that contains absolutely no artificial chemical substances. In fact, the almost miraculous qualities of this product are primarily due to the unique CM8 compound as described in the Official Flexcin website. You can be certain that only natural minerals and herbal ingredients are contained in this cure. As a result there are literally no side effects when Flexcin is used. Sufferers can readily forget about the disturbing health problems they often experience when taking other medications. Bleeding and ulcers can be quite disturbing apart from being highly unpleasant when they occur in the course of the standard treatment. This cure does not cause any damage to the bodily organs unlike the standard remedies. Liver damage and heart damage are impossible to occur with Flexcin treatment.

Flexcin is recommended by numerous physicians worldwide, which comes as a certain guarantee that it is absolutely safe and will work for you. In order to learn more about its healing powers you can read the honest patients reviews on various websites. This superb joint pain remedy is very affordably priced, which is another reason why millions of people from all over the globe opt for it. You also may not know that arthritis does not just affect adults; unfortunately children can also contract this disease. Though rare, children can contract a form of the disorder known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis in children has many of the same symptoms as those experienced by adults. Yet there are some notable differences that any parent must know more about.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis normally causes inflamed joints for a period of about a month and a half. This is actually a common form of the condition that manifests just about as frequently as does adult onset arthritis. Indeed, fully one quarter of the population will ultimately go through one kind of arthritis or another.

Because it is a very complex type of arthritis, it's very important to seek treatment; otherwise, it can actually become life-threatening. Children can experience a number of forms of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. These are categorized in relation to the joints that are impacted, along with the symptoms that the child is undergoing.

The most common symptoms are swollen joints along with pain and stiffness. Swelling of the joints or bones and crippling pain might also be experienced. This usually happens after intense physical activity. One might not be able to visually note pain and stiffness, but swelling will be very obvious. The swollen area is generally tender and reddened. Children might suffer a range of symptoms in the afflicted joint, from stiffness, to limited mobility, to no motion at all.

Children with rheumatoid arthritis frequently have fevers and rashes as symptoms. The fever associated with this disease is quite elevated, and it may simply go away on its own. If these symptoms continue, you can be certain it's not just a normal cold or flu bug. They won't simply hang around for a couple of days then disappear, but instead will return on a frequent basis. The associated rash is typically light pink and often appears then disappears on a random basis.

Eye inflammation frequently takes place in children who suffer from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. The eyes could be swollen and red, particularly around the center. You're less likely to link this symptom to another illness since it's unique to JRA. Blindness might be the ultimate result for children who have this symptom, which is usually associated with pauciarticular JRA, which does not show any other early signs.

Children undergoing these symptoms need immediate medical attention. It is crucial to seek proper medical attention for any symptoms of juvenile arthritis. Your physician will be able to advise you of the best way to get arthritis pain relief for your child.

About the Author

Japan Genmaicha green loose tea is one of the most exotic green teas available. The green Bancha plant's leaves are infused with a cereal product for an invigorating blend of color and flavor. Following a Japanese recipe, roasted brown rice is added, which gives a grain flavor and is great for a beverage to start the day.

Green loose teas originate in China, where many different varieties are created. Green teas are primarily made from the Camellia sinensis, or tea plant, with very little oxidation, which makes this tea one of the highest anti-oxidant bearing beverages in the world today.
Because of this, they tend to just ignore the pain even as it deteriorates and cause them more anguish each passing day. But the truth is, they can get joint pain relief if they only knew how to seek help in time. There are almost 100 kinds of arthritis that cause joint pain but the most common of them all are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The former is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease while the latter is caused by cartilage degeneration in the affected joints. Bursitis joint pains are non-arthritic and occur when the small sac in the joint called bursa is infected with bacteria. Symptoms include redness, stiffness and swelling. Bursae can also be inflamed due to repetitive movement. Doctors have many recommendations for joint pain relief and the overall management of joint pain. One of those is a change in diet. They recommend an anti-arthritic diet that contains more fruits and vegetables and reduced sugar intake. This diet also calls for reduced consumption of salt, fried and processed foods. There are some vegetables that need to be excluded though, such as brinjals (Indian eggplants), tomatoes and pepper. Olive oil is recommended too, and seeds such as flax, sesame, and pumpkin. This anti-arthritic diet can also include supplements in the form of multi-vitamins, especially 1 gm of vitamin C, a natural pain killer, and omega 3, an essential fatty acid and considered as a natural substance with anti-inflammatory properties. Glucosamine sulphate has been proven to help arthritic patients get joint pain relief so now it is also recommended to be part of an anti-arthritic diet. In the same way, chondroitin sulphate and methyl sulphonyl methane (MSM), are also recommended because both have been found to lessen joint pain. Starting a healthy diet can help manage a patient's weight, which in turn can help to alleviate the pain in the joints. These recommendations however, are not foolproof and it is only after all these methods have failed that a patient should start to consider surgery.
Early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are important signals that you should not miss. Helping yourself out quickly can help reduce your suffering and increase your sense of overall wellbeing.

Arthritis is a common affliction of many people. More and more elderly complain of having arthritis pain today. Arthritis pain can be very severe at your joints. Without proper care and treatment, your pain can get worse. You will find that even simple tasks like dressing and bathing yourself becomes difficult to do. The loss of independence can cause you to feel extremely depressed.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic progressive disease. The disease generally worsens as it progresses. If you are aware of any early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, you can take steps to prevent it from degenerating and a worsening in your condition.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to produce cells that attack its own tissues. This results in inflammation that damages the joints and surrounding muscle. Early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis can show up in some mild form of pain in your joints.

Here are some national figures to help you gauge if you belong to a higher risk category. Approximately 1.5 million of all rheumatoid arthritis patients in the United States are women. This is out of the 2.1 million people in the United States with rheumatoid arthritis. As such, statistics show that women are two to three times more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than the male population.

Also, it appears that older people are more prone to developing rheumatoid arthritis. Most diagnoses occur between the ages of 35 to 50. As you age, therefore, become aware of any early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis that you may experience.

This does not mean that the young do not get this disease. There is a variation of the condition that affects young people. It is known as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, rheumatoid arthritis can affect people of all ages, ranging from teenagers to the elderly.

According to some research studies, Native American populations get afflicted more than other population groups. It is estimated that about five to six per cent of certain Native American populations suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. The lowest rates of rheumatoid arthritis appear to occur in individuals of Caribbean backgrounds, mostly those of African descent.

In terms of hereditary factors, studies indicate that roughly two to three per cent of those diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis report that someone in their family also suffer from the disease. If you have a family member that has rheumatoid arthritis, be sure to ask him or her about the early symptoms experienced. This will help heightened your awareness based on your own body and condition.

Some people may experience early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis more dramatically than others. For some, the disease may regress or flare up throughout their life. Most people will experience periods where the symptoms of the disease are practically non-existent. Of course, these periods will be tempered by times where the disease flares up due to environmental triggers.

Unfortunately, there appears to be no cure for rheumatoid arthritis. The only way to help yourself early on is to learn what are the early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. As mentioned, this disease can progressively worsen over time. If you find yourself having early symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, treatment steps can be taken quickly.
Children as young as six months can be diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. In the United States, approximately 75,000 young people have this debilitating condition.

Like rheumatoid arthritis in adults, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is essentially an autoimmune disease. This is a syndrome whereby the body produces antibodies that attack its own joint tissues. Currently, medical researchers have not determined that exact cause of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. However, there are several theories as to how juvenile rheumatoid arthritis can happen.

The most popular hypothesis is that juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is caused by the inability of the body to differentiate between its own tissue and foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria. Ironically, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis may actually be the result of the effort of the body to defend itself against disease.

There are three categories of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: polyarticular, pauciaticular, and systematic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. These three categories have different symptoms and require different appropriate treatment.

Polyarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis occurs when swelling is present in at least five joints throughout the body. Most of the affected joints are those described as weight bearing joints, which include joints in the hands, neck, hips, knees, and ankles. Weight bearing joints are those that receive the brunt of the pressure and weight that is endured by the body.

Pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis refers to a form of the disease that tends to affect four or less joints. Pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis symptoms include selling, stiffness, discomfort or severe pain around the afflicted joints. Most often, pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis affects the joints of the wrist and knee. A key distinguishing feature of pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is that it may also affect the eyes. The iris may become inflamed. In most cases, ophthalmologists are often among the first to diagnose cases of pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Systematic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis refers to the fact that the disease may sometimes affect the whole body. This happens when the immune system becomes weakened by the disease. Children afflicted with systematic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis may experience fevers, rashes, in addition to the feelings of joint stiffness and overall pain and discomfort. Other symptoms that are specific to the systematic form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis include the enlargement of the lymph nodes and the spleen.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis treatment usually involves the use of NSAIDs class drugs. These are non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs that are often prescribed to treat the symptoms of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Those who are afflicted are also encouraged to undertake appropriate exercise as it is important to retain their natural range of motion and flexibility, particularly in the synovial joints. In cases of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, high impact and weight bearing sports like tennis and running are best avoided.
Are you one of them? It is one of the most prevalent chronic health problems and the nation's leading cause of disability among Americans over the age of 15.

If you are one of the 46 million people battling arthritis you know that it limits everyday activities that others take for granted such as walking, dressing and bathing. Women are affected more greatly than men, but even children are at risk. Of the people with doctor-diagnosed arthritis 24.3 million are women, 17.1 million are men and nearly 300,000 are children.

Arthritis sufferers will tell you that the condition can come in many different shapes and forms affecting each individual differently. Arthritis causes pain, loss of movement and sometimes swelling. Here are some types of arthritis as described by the Arthritis Foundation:

* Osteoarthritis: A degenerative joint disease in which the cartilage that covers the ends of bones in the joint deteriorates, causing pain and loss of movement as bone begins to rub against bone. It is the most prevalent form of arthritis.

* Rheumatoid arthritis: An autoimmune disease in which the joint lining becomes inflamed as part of the body's immune system activity. Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most serious and disabling types, affecting mostly women.

* Gout: It is usually the result of a defect in body chemistry. This painful condition most often attacks small joints, especially the big toe. Fortunately, gout almost always can be completely controlled with medication and changes in diet.

* Ankylosing spondylitis: A type of arthritis that affects the spine. As a result of inflammation, the bones of the spine grow together.

* Juvenile arthritis: A general term for all types of arthritis that occur in children. Children may develop juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or childhood forms of lupus, ankylosing spondylitis or other types of arthritis.

* Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus): A serious disorder that can inflame and damage joints and other connective tissues throughout the body.

* Scleroderma: A disease of the body's connective tissue that causes a thickening and hardening of the skin.

* Fibromyalgia: A condition in which widespread pain affects the muscles and attachments to the bone. It affects mostly women.

Half of the Americans with arthritis don't think anything can be done to help them. But Flexcin is helping thousands of people around the nation and even the world find relief in a safe and all-natural solution. The primary component of Flexcin™ is CM8™ (cetyl myristoleate). Of all the ingredients in Flexcin, CM8™ is the most powerful. CM8™ functions in three different ways. First, it acts as a highly effective lubricant in the joints, muscles and other tissues, allowing them to move smoothly. Decrease or loss of morning stiffness is commonly noted shortly after commencing treatment. Next, CM8™ functions as an anti-inflammatory. Relief from swollen joints is often seen after the 4th or 5th week of treatment. Third, it is also an immune system modulator, which can be effectual against autoimmune diseases, such as arthritic conditions. CM8™ relieves joint pain at its source, reducing inflammation and irritation of the joints and tissues. It also has been helpful for many sufferers of muscle tension and fibromyalgia. All of these characteristics make CM8™ the most important ingredient in Flexcin.

In addition, Flexcin is proudly manufactured in the United States in a state of the art facility under the strict guidelines of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Good Manufacturing Practices, or G.M.P. Before you buy any drug, medical food or dietary supplement, always ask whether it was manufactured under FDA GMP Standards.
Since this author recently reached the age of 60 and certainly doesn't consider himself elderly, the definition should be changed.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects 2% of those 60 years old and older and is generally more common among women. When RA presents in patients past the age of 60, it may present with an acute onset, with significant inflammatory symptoms, and predominant upper extremity involvement, eg. shoulders. Inflammatory markers in the blood such as the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) may be greatly elevated.

Diagnostic testing is similar to that for diagnosing RA in younger individuals. Acute phase reactants for inflammation such as the ESR and CRP will invariably be abnormal. Serologic testing for rheumatoid factor and anti-cyclic citrullinated protein (anti-CCP) are helpful.

The diagnostic imaging procedure of choice is probably magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), although diagnostic ultrasound may be useful.

Other disease processes that need to be excluded include: calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD), osteoarthritis, gout, polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), arthritis associated with infections such as hepatitis B,C , and immunodeficiency virus. Tuberculosis and fungal infections such as histoplasmosis, coccidiomycosis, and blastomycosis can also present with inflammation of many joints.

Endocrine disorders such as diabetes and Cushing's disease may also present with diagnostic challenges.

Malignancy is another consideration. An inflammatory arthritis affecting many joints in a patient over the age of 60 should lead the physician to working up the patient for an underlying malignancy. Also, certain malignancies such as lymphoma are increased in incidence in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

The treatment of EORA presents special challenges. First, a patient with RA past the age of 60 probably has other medical conditions. Second, they are probably on multiple medications. The diagnosis may be confounded by the fact the both ESR and rheumatoid factor can be elevated in older patients who don't have RA. Finally, treatment with medications needs to be tempered with the knowledge that potential side-effects may be increased in this population where drug metabolism is less certain than that of younger patients.

Nonetheless, the approach to therapy for patients with EORA is not substantially different from the treatment strategies employed for younger patients.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are often used early on in younger patients. However, in older patients who may develop kidney and liver toxicity with these agents, the use of NSAIDS is probably a strategy that has to be watched closely.

Low dose prednisone (5-10mgs) given as a single morning dose provides symptomatic relief and can serve as a "bridge" until the effects of second line agents begin. The potential complications of long-term prednisone therapy such as osteoporosis and cataracts, among others, will be more of a concern than for younger patients.

Second line agents consist of two groups. They are the disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS) and the biologic drugs.

Disease-modifying drugs such as methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), and leflunomide (Arava) are all potentially useful. Obviously, with older patients, potential toxicities and drug interactions need to be monitored for carefully.

Biologic therapies can also be used for patients with EORA. TNF inhibitors such as etanercept (Enbrel), adalimumab (Humira), infliximab (Remicade, and the two newer agents golimumab (Simponi), and certolizumab (Cimzia) are all effective and well tolerated in the older population of patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Second line biologics such as rituximab (Rituxan) and abatacept (Orencia) have also been used in patients with EORA with results comparable to that for younger patients.

Advancing age should not, by itself, be a contraindication to the use of biologic therapies. The aim for older patients, as it is with younger patients, is to establish remission. This may be even more important in older patients since independence is cherished more. Finally, since cardiovascular events are an established complication of rheumatoid arthritis and are also more common in older adults, every effort should be instituted to establish and maintain remission.

You should balance the foods you eat with physical activities that help maintain or improve your weight. You should choose a diet that has plenty of grain products. Whole grains such as barley, wheat, oats, millet and brown rice are important.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are also crucial. At least five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables a day are important. Recent studies have suggested that symptoms of this disease normally reduce when a patient adopts a vegetarian diet. Green vegetables such as parsley, kales, watercress, okra and celery should be included in your diet. Fresh fruits such as apples are vital because they are rich in both vitamins and fiber.

A rheumatoid arthritis diet should exclude foods from the nightshade family. These foods include tomatoes, peppers, white potatoes and the eggplant. Your diet should be low in saturated fats and cholesterol because such foods make the internal environment more acidic. An acidic environment is not good if you have this condition because it promotes inflammation and can also worsen the symptoms as well as increase the pain.

You should also try to avoid fried and processed foods. Animal products are rich in cholesterol and therefore you reduce the consumption of milk, yogurt and cheese. You should also cut down on the consumption of margarine and caffeine. Instead of coffee, you should take ginger or rosemary tea. If you must drink alcoholic beverages, you must do so in moderation. A rheumatoid arthritis diet should also involve drinking plenty of water because it helps to flush out toxins from your body.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Infrared sauna may provide benefit to patients with rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. A pilot study involving the use of infrared sauna over a 4-week period resulted in short-term improvement regarding pain and stiffness, reduction in fatigue, and a trend towards long-term beneficial effects. National Center for Biotechnology Information - PubMed: A pilot study showing good tolerance, short-term improvement of pain and stiffness, and a trend towards long-term beneficial effects study results Alternative healing techniques incorporating infrared pain relief methods have proved to be valuable in recent years because they are not only effective, but are also free from the typical side effects that are normally associated with conventional medication. Far Infrared Rays or FIR promotes effective healing because the rays are automatically absorbed by the skin, which consequently leads to the removal of bodily toxins through sweat, feces and urine. National Center for Biotechnology Information - PubMed: The effects of repeated thermal therapy for patients with chronic pain study results It has also been scientifically proven that FIR improves blood circulation in areas where it is administered and ultimately boosts the immune system. This means that if you include FIR as part of your daily routine, you will have fewer visits to your physician because your enhanced immunity will automatically prevent the spread of infection and the onset of viral and bacterial diseases.
Exercise can reduce stiffness and joint pain plus it increases muscle strength, flexibility and cardiac fitness. It can also help with weight lose which can contribute to arthritis joint pain.

If you have arthritis you should talk with your doctor or other health care providers to find out what type of exercise they recommend for you. Everyone has a different situation and should talk to their doctor about their arthritis and what will work best. People with osteoarthritis in their hands will get different recommendations than someone with rheumatoid arthritis throughout their whole body. Your doctor can also decide how severe your arthritis is and how much exercise is enough and tell you the signs of when you should take it easy. Your doctor may even suggest starting with a physical therapist.

Many people start exercising with range-of-motion exercises and low-impact aerobics. A doctor or physical therapist can give you suggestions on a variety of exercises or sports that you should or should not participate in. A physical therapist who has experience working with people with arthritis can even show you how to do the proper exercises. They can design a home exercise program whether you have knee arthritis, arthritis in your hands, elbows, shoulders or hips. They can teach you about a pain-relief methods and even how to properly handle tasks like lifting heavy boxes or opening certain containers that may cause pain for people with arthritis.
The disease is a systemic disease that causes inflammation, which targets the synovial joint liners. This is where back pain starts. Rheumatoid arthritis may link to genetic transmissions or autoimmune illnesses according to etiology aspects. Physically speaking Rheumatoid arthritis inflames the synovial membranes, which often affects the pannus. This action causes destruction in the ligaments, bones, and the cartilages. Once the pannus is hit, fibrotic tissues start to replace the pannus. Calcification also replaces the pannus, which results in joint subluxation conditions. Calcification is abnormal hardening, which causes swelling and joint stiffness.

Symptoms; Once potential Rheumatoid arthritis is detected the doctor considers the symptoms before moving to diagnostics. The patient may experience anorexia (Eating disorder), malaise, fatigue, limited range of motion (ROM), subcutaneous nodules, pain and swollen joints, and rises in body temperature. The joints may also demonstrate mirrored images, which is noted when the symmetrical joints swell. Stiffness in the waking hours often occurs as well, which is followed by "paresthesia of the" feet and hands. Patients also demonstrate signs of crepitus, inflamed lymph nodes, pericarditis, leukopenia, and splenomegaly.

Pericarditis causes swelling. As you can see with so much swelling, the pain will spread out reaching the back. Rheumatoid arthritis itself causes stiffness of the muscles and joints, which creates immeasurable pain. Most times the problem occurs from injury and/or infections.

How doctors discover Rheumatoid arthritis? Doctors conduct tests, including x-rays, latex fixation, gamma globulin, synovial fluid analysis, and hematology tests. If the tests show positive results, such as spacing between narrow joints, erosion of bones, platelet, WBC, ESR increases, IgM and IgG increases, decrease of opaque and viscosity, and rheumatoid, thus a diagnostic is set.

Once the diagnostics are concluded management, interventions, stress reduction, etc are incorporated to treat the patient.

Management often leads to heat/cold therapy, gold therapy, etc. Gold therapy is used to intervene with infections reaching the inner central of the muscle layers, thus averting them from reaching the wall of the heart. The joints are often extended when and kept in form. Skin care, emotional care, etc are also prescribed.

How to reduce pain: You will find helpful information at the Foundation of Arthritis. In the meantime, doctors often prescribe stress-reduction strategies. As well, the patient is advised to avoid stress, infections, colds, and remedies that have no concrete discoveries that help Rheumatoid arthritis.

Environmental stress should also be reduced to slow swelling, redness, and pain. Doctors prescribed range of motion exercises, warm compressors, heat therapy, etc to treat Rheumatoid arthritis. Try a few stretch exercises and stay clear of people who elevate your emotions.

It is important when you are diagnosed with any disorder, including Rheumatoid arthritis that you seek emotional and mental support. Express your feelings, otherwise suppression will only increase your symptoms, as well as pain. In addition, you want to learn to live in a calm environment, as well as provide comprehensive care for your feet and skin. Make it a daily habit. If the condition worsens, you may have to endure surgical procedures, such as synovectomy and/or joint replacement.

Unfortunately, Rheumatoid arthritis can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. The disease carpal tunnel syndrome starts in the hands, yet the pain will spread.

In addition to Rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis can cause back pain. Any form of arthritis limits movement, which causes damage to the joints, cartilages, connective tissues, muscles, bones, etc. Anytime these skeletal and linking elements in the body are interrupted back pain follows. To understand how arthritic symptoms cause back pain, learn more about gouty arthritis.
All these conditions have immune-mediated joint inflammation as their major symptom. This disease refers to chronic arthritic conditions that affect children aged 16 and below. These arthritic conditions normally last for a minimum of three to six months.

Heredity has been linked as a probable cause of this disease. This is because the condition has often been reported in multiple members of the same family. Some people consider this condition as an autoimmune disorder. Autoimmune disorder occurs when the immune system mistakenly identifies the body's own tissue as foreign and goes ahead to attack it.

There are various subtypes of juvenile arthritis. The symptoms normally depend on the particular subtype. Pauciarticular is a subtype that usually affects the knees, the ankle, the wrist and the elbow. Some children with this subtype may experience painless swelling of the joint. Polyarticular is another subtype that affects five or more joints simultaneously. It is common in children up to age three or after the age of 10.This subtype usually affects more girls than boys.

Systematic onset or still disease is a subtype whose diagnosis is usually made between the ages of 5 to 10 years. This form equally affects both boys and girls. Spondyloarthropathy is a subtype that commonly affects boys older than eight years of age. In these cases, the areas affected are the knees and the ankles. It may also affect the hips and the lower spine. Psoriatic is a subtype that mostly affects the hips, the back, the fingers and the toes. Juvenile arthritis can be treated using medications, physical therapy and exercise.
This condition can lead to the destruction of the articular cartilage and ankylosis of the joints. Apart from the joints, this disorder can also affect body tissues and organs.

This condition can also produce diffuse inflammation in the lungs, the pericardium, the pleura and the sclera. Although the exact causes of this disease are yet to be identified, autoimmunity is said to be a major contributor to the progression of the disease. No age is immune to this disease although the onset is often between the ages of 40 and 50. Signs of rheumatoid arthritis include inflammation and swelling of the affected joints. The joints will also feel warm, painful and stiff especially in the morning or after a prolonged period of inactivity. Increased stiffness particularly early in the morning is a prominent feature of the inflammatory disease and may last for more than an hour. Gentle movements normally help to relieve the symptoms in the early stages of the disease. This disorder normally affects the joints in a fairly symmetrical fashion.

Diagnosis of this condition is chiefly on signs and symptoms but also blood tests and x-rays can be used. Other medical imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound can also be used during diagnosis. Diagnosis and management of this disease is done by a rheumatologist; an expert in the diseases of joints and connective tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis is treated using anti-rheumatic medication. Cortisone therapy can also help to relieve the symptoms but may not effective for long term use.
It is the anti-inflammatory properties in the omega-3s that can reduce general stiffness and pain and get you moving more freely again.

There are many studies that prove the benefits of the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil for all sorts of conditions, including heart disease, cancer and immune system problems.

But one of the greatest health effects is often less talked about: the benefits of fish oil for arthritis relief.

Arthritis, and its chronic form rheumatoid arthritis, is characterised by painful inflammation and stiffness in a joint.

Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect and that regular doses can reduce morning stiffness and pain in the joints. This is true for both adults and children, so young people suffering from junior rheumatoid arthritis can benefit too.

It is also known that people with rheumatoid arthritis are at a higher risk of developing heart disease than the rest of the population. So if you suffer from RA, you can improve your heart health as well as your joint health with regular doses of omega-3s.

If you are finding it hard to increase your intake of oily fish, you might find that supplements are an easier--and safer--way of getting your omega-3s.

Easier, because taking just one or two small capsules a day will give you an adequate dose. And safer because the best quality supplements use fish caught in clean waterways that are free from contamination with heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins. Unfortunately, a lot of the species you see in the markets come from waters contaminated with all kinds of chemicals, and the harmful effects of eating too much of it could outweigh any benefits.

So, whether you are young and in pain, getting on and in pain, or (like me!) going through your middle years with increasing stiffness and discomfort, we can all get relief from our aches by trying fish oil for arthritis. You can get more information about the latest studies on the benefits of omega-3s for your health at my website.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to produce chemicals which attack its own tissues rather than protecting them. RA can flare when the immune system responds incorrectly to an infection or another external factor, causing the lining and other tissues around joints to become inflamed. Rheumatoid arthritis is sometimes called a systematic disease because it can affect other organs, not just the joints. A characteristic symptom of RA is inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues, which can lead to permanent damage and deformity.

Many people who have been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis experience periods of pain and stiffness as well as periods of little to no symptoms. The symptoms of RA occur when the disease is active, and subside during periods of remission. Often, joints on both sides of the body are affected at the same time, for instance, both knees. Some symptoms that are commonly associated with the condition are stiffness (particularly in the morning or after rest), inflammation of the joints, reduced range of motion, pain, puffiness and even fever. Movement or pressure on the affected joints typically becomes more painful.

Since RA is a chronic condition with no cure, treatment programs are usually intended to help the affected person function with less pain while reducing the extent of long term damage that may occur as a result of the condition. Treatment is personalized by medical professionals for each patient with RA and is specific to his or her situation and lifestyle. Some methods used in the treatment of RA are:

•Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications
•Medications to prevent or slow joint damage
•Exercise
•Weight loss
A recent development called the Jstim 1000® Therapy System utilizes a combination of compression and infrared heat designed to help alleviate the pain associated with RA of the hands. Research aimed at determining the cause, creating effective treatments and hopefully finding a cure for rheumatoid arthritis is ongoing.
Note: This information is not intended to supplement or replace advice from a medical professional, or to diagnose or treat any condition.

About the Author
Chris Dillon is the V.P. of MMAR Medical Group Inc., a leading orthotic device supplier specializing in diabetic footwear including shoes and socks for diabetics as well as a full line of orthotic insoles.

As a result, multiple studies evaluating the potential side-effects of this group of medicines have been published.

During clinical trials, most adverse events have been mild and short-lived. Side effects such as injection site reactions, headache and nausea were generally weel-tolerated.

Once these drugs reach the general marketplace, though, then a larger population of patients with more significant co-morbid conditions (other medical problems) is exposed.

Two large studies comparing patients treated with TNF-α inhibitors and those treated with methotrexate and other standard disease modifying medicines showed an increased likelihood for hospitalization with infection in one study and an overall increased risk for skin and soft tissue infection in another. (Curtis JR, et al. Arthritis Rheum. 2007; 65: 178-181; Dixon WG, et al. Arthritis Rheum. 2006; 54: 2368-2376)

More recently, there has been documentation of an increased risk for fungal infections such as histoplasmosis and coccidiomycosis in patients taking TNF- α inhibitors. This data prompted the FDA to order a strengthening of warnings regarding the risk of serious infections for patients taking these medicines.

Another study looked at the combination of abatacept (Orencia) and TNF inhibition and there was a significant increase in adverse events. (Weinblatt M, et al. Ann Rheum Dis. 2007; 66: 228-234). In the same vein, a study evaluating the combination of TNF-α inhibition and IL-1 inhibition demonstrated an increase in infections and other adverse events. (Genovese M, et al. Arthritis Rheum. 2004; 50: 1412-1419)

Another concern has been malignancy. There have been two large studies published. One study failed to show an increased incidence of lymphoma. Another study- a meta-analysis of 9 randomized studies- showed an increased risk of malignancy in patient receiving TNF-α inhibitors compared with placebo. (Wolfe F, et al. Arthritis Rheum. 2007; 56: 1433-1439; Bongartz T, et al. JAMA. 2006; 259: 2275-2285). Other smaller studies have failed to demonstrate this association.

So what do you do? Rheumatologists and patients must be aware of the relative risks and benefits regarding this set of drugs. Close supervision is mandatory.

Prior to starting patients on these drugs, a careful evaluation for risk factors such as active infections, shingles, hepatitis B and C, and fungal infections should be done. During the course of therapy, patients need to be followed closely.

More recently, concerns have been raised regarding the occurrence of a rare but fatal neurologic illness, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, occurring in patients treated with rituximab (Rituxan.) While extremely rare in RA patients, this is an issue to be discussed.

Prior to surgery, patients should probably withhold their biologic therapy until at least one to two weeks following the procedure. TNF inhibitors probably should not be used in patients with a history of lymphoproliferative disease until at least five years have elapsed.

Unfortunately, there are no set guidelines to help in determining when non-biologic disease-modifying drugs or biologic therapies can be used in patients with a history of solid malignancies. Risk benefit analysis should be individualized.

Yes... I realize that's a cop-out but when the firm data is not available, looking at a single patient's clinical course, talking with them, and coming up with a decision they feel comfortable with is the best option.

About the Author
Nathan Wei, MD FACP FACR is a nationally known board-certified rheumatologist. It's true! Arthritis currently affects more than 40 million Americans and that figure is expected to rise to 60 million by the year 2,020.

It is imperative that you read this article and find out what this devastating disease is truly about.

Arthritis: What it Is

Basically, Arthritis is inflammation of the joints. There are currently over 100 forms of Arthritis and remarkably, that number continues to rise. The most common forms of Arthritis include: Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Gout (see our next article, "Symptoms of Arthritis" for more information).

Osteoarthritis is the result of degenerative joint disease, or simply "wear and tear" on the joints.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is the result of an over active Immune System that results in inflammation.

Gout is the oldest form of Arthritis and is the result of too much Uric Acid. The Uric Acid deposits crystals in the joints, leading to "Gouty Arthritis".

The joint pain, inherent to all Arthritis sufferers, is referred to as "Arthralgia".

Not only are the joints susceptible to attack, but the surrounding muscles, tissues, and organs are vulnerable to the effects of Arthritis as well. In fact, Arthritis has been known to attack the heart, kidneys, lungs, and liver.

Many people mistakenly believe that Arthritis is a disease that only affects the elderly. This simply isn't the case. Yes it's true that seniors, especially senior women, are effected the greatest by Osteoarthritis, yet the average age for onset of Arthritis is 47 years old, and sufferers are generally afflicted between the ages of 20-50.

Sadly, even infants have been diagnosed with forms of Arthritis.

One of the most devastating effects of Arthritis has to be that it is a chronic condition. Arthritis is so weakening that it only grows worse with time. In fact, Arthritis is so detrimental that of the diseases that instill chronic physical disabilities, Arthritis is second only to Heart Disease.

The cost of Arthritis is not only measured in the loss of quality of life, but it is also measured by dollars and cents as well. It is estimated that over $150,000 is lost by an individual over the course of a lifetime due to the debilitating effects of Arthritis. This is totaled by lost wages, medical treatments, and the cost of medically based needs and care.

The overall conclusion is that Arthritis is a seriously unbearable condition that causes chronic pain and weakness. It does not only affect seniors, but forms of Arthritis also plagues children.

There are over 100 forms of Arthritis and all Arthritis sufferers share one thing in common, chronic joint pain. The top three common forms of Arthritis include Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Gout.

We have seen that Arthritis isn't cured, but managed.

Some steps and treatment plans used by Arthritis sufferers include:

· Losing Weight (thereby reducing stress and strain on the joints)

· Increasing their Nutritional Intake

· Reducing Stress (both physical and emotional)

· Participating in Gentle Stress Free Exercises such as Stretching

· Using both Hot and Cold Therapies

· Protecting Joints by use of Splints and Braces

· Drug Therapies

· Surgery

If you suffer from Arthritis, don't give up. There are many people who are discovering that with the proper management and health care provisions, they can live better, healthier, and pain free lives.

Stay tuned for the next article in our series on Arthritis, "Symptoms of Arthritis".

About the Author
Mr. William B. The study was conducted by the University of California, San Francisco and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London and involved six subjects suffering from a condition called hemicrania continua (a rare headache disorder). Each subject had a matchstick sized battery operated electrode (bion) implanted near the occipital nerve in the back of the neck. Researchers found that in the month after implantation of the bion, five of the six patients reported significant reduction in headache symptoms. Similar results were reported in 2007 by two other research teams studying patients with chronic cluster headaches.

2) New drug for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Recent research led by Professor Paul Emery at Leeds University showed that a monthly injection of a drug called tocilizumab can rapidly diminish the painful and debilitating effects of Rheumatoid Arthritis. In trials involving over 1000 subjects, tocilizumab plus methotrexate halted the condition in 47% of patients, compared to only 8% when methotrexate was taken alone. Tocilizumab is thought to work by blocking Interleukin 6 which is a signalling molecule thought to be involved in the development of rheumatoid arthritis. The drug is not yet available as it is awaiting approval from drug regulators in the US and Europe. However, when it does come out it will be sold under the brand name RoActemra by Roche.

3) Novel nerve stimulation helps chronic headaches

Recently, research has shown that a new form of electrical stimulation may be effective in the management of a chronic headache disorder. There are a wide variety of treatments available for back pain and there has been a growing interest in working out what is the most effective treatment. New research from the University of Alberta and University of Regina has suggested that weight training is more effective to ease lower back pain than other forms of exercise such as jogging. In the study, chronic back pain sufferers were assigned to a 16 week period of aerobic training (walking on a treadmill/jogging) or resistance training (lifting dumbbells, barbells and other load-bearing exercise equipment). Interestingly, the aerobic training group experienced a 12% improvement in pain and function levels, whilst the resistance training group had a 60% improvement.

5) Food and Drug Administration Agency in the USA announces approval of Fibromyalgia drug

Two world renowned laboratories have announced that a new drug called Savella (Milnacipran) has been approved by the FDA for the management of Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia (FM or FMS) is a chronic soft tissue disorder characterised by widespread pain and an increased sensitivity to touch stimuli. Fibromyalgia can occur at any age; however, it is more common in women between the ages of 20 to 40. Savella is a selective serotonin and norepeniphrine dual reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). A serotonin and norepinephrine dual reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) is a type of antidepressant that reduces the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine, in order to boost their levels in the brain. The approval of Savella comes after phase III clinical trials involving over 2000 Fibromyalgia patients. Patients taking Savella doses of 100 mg/day and 200 mg/day demonstrated clinically significant improvements in their global assessment of pain and daily physical function.

6) Pain may cause Arthritis: New Study

New research from the Journal of Arthritis and Rheumatism has reported evidence to suggest that as well as being a symptom of osteoarthritis, pain may also cause arthritis. Researchers found that some of the pathways carrying pain signals also transferred inflammation from arthritic joints to the spine and back again. In the experiment, the researchers genetically engineered a mouse where they could turn up and turn down the production of a chemical (IL-1β ) known to be involved in inflammation. Most notably, they found that increasing production of IL-1β at the peripheral joint caused higher levels of IL-1β to be produced in the spinal cord. This finding is important as it may help researchers develop new drug targets to try and prevent the spread of inflammation.

pain control takes time and determination but keep working on it

for more infomation please see

Visit Fluto

About the Author
for more infomation please see

Visit Fluto

With the help of these drugs men are able to achieve and sustain the erection for a long time during the sexual intercourse. These are the world famous drugs used to treat the erectile dysfunction in men. Lack of blood supply to the penis during the sexual copulation is the main cause of erectile dysfunction. These erectile dysfunction medicines basically increase the blood flow to the penis during the sexual activity and allow men to get strong and long lasting erection. According to the latest research, these erectile dysfunction drugs are also found to be effective in the treatment of the Rheumatic disorders.

Rheumatic disorders are the disorders that affect the heart, bones, joints, kidney, skin and lung. Ankylosing spondylitis, Back pain, Bursitis/Tendinitis, Shoulder pain, wrist, biceps, leg, knee (patellar), ankle, hip, and Achilles, Capsulitis, Fibromyalgia, Neck pain, Osteoarthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, Rheumatic fever, Rheumatic heart disease (a long-term complication of Rheumatic fever), Rheumatoid arthritis, and Systemic lupus erythematosus are some of the common well-known rheumatic disorders. Rheumatic disorders are the clinical problems involving joints, soft tissues, and allied conditions of connective tissues. Rheumatic disorders are caused by many different reasons and require the different treatments. Doctor is the best person to decide that what of rheumatic disorder you are suffering from and how it should be treated.

All the erectile dysfunction drugs like Sildenafil, Tadalafil, and Vardenafil are all found to be effective in the treatment of rheumatic disorders. Their effectiveness was established after a study in which the men suffering with erectile dysfunction when took ED drugs found the relief from the rheumatic disorders. In this study 200 men suffering with rheumatic disorders were given the erectile dysfunction drugs for the duration of 1 week and it was observed that nearly 85% of men found the relief from the rheumatic disorders along with the erectile dysfunction. The study concluded that erectile dysfunction drugs are useful in the rheumatic disorders. Among all the erectile dysfunction drugs tadalafil was found to most effective in the treatment of rheumatic disorders.

Rheumatic disorders can be treated by increasing the blood flow to the affected area and the same thing was followed by the erectile dysfunction drugs. These drugs increased the blood supply to the penis and also to the other parts of the body that in turn treated rheumatic disorders. Due to the increased blood supply the pain and inflammation on the effected part got reduced and the antibodies are also supplied in the form of blood to the affected part. Thus, the rheumatic disease is treated. Hence by effectively treating blood vessel narrowing in rheumatic diseases, erectile dysfunction drugs solves the problem of rheumatic disorders.

Thus, the new use of the erectile dysfunction drugs is been established. Earlier, erectile dysfunction drugs were found to be effective in the treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and blood pressure. Now, these erectile dysfunction drugs are also found to be effective in the treatment of rheumatic disorders. The further studies are going on to know that at what concentration of the erectile dysfunction drugs are found to be best useful in the treatment of rheumatic diseases. Diagnosed between 20 and 40 years, rheumatoid arthritis and rheumatoid knocking at an age when the desire for children is important. Struck by the disease, couples often wonder if they can have children. All responses of Professor Philippe Berlin Chief of Rheumatology CHU (Limoges) and author of the guide "chronic inflammatory Rheumatism, wanting to become a parent. You or your spouse suffers from inflammatory arthritis. After several months of living together, you want to have a child. But is this possible? Yes, thanks to recent advances in treatment.

Professor Philippe Bertin, Chief of Rheumatology CHU (Limoges): Currently with advances in treatment related to both to new drugs and the concept of multidisciplinary care be taken that as a whole, we get to control these chronic inflammatory rheumatism and to ensure that women as well as man can procreate in optimal conditions.

My baby does he necessarily suffer from this same disease? No, inflammatory rheumatism are not transmitted automatically. "The legacy" of a genetic certainly increases the risk of being affected, but the risk is very low.

Professor Philippe Bertin: What you need to understand is that these diseases occur on a genetic predisposition, but this has nothing to do with a chromosome disease which is transmitted once in two or systematically. In this case, the transmission is not automatic. The genetic background will eventually predispose the child to have more risk. We must meet with other factors that determine the disease. But in any case, this is far from certain. It is rare to have a family or rheumatoid.

But how will develop the disease during your pregnancy? Again, it should be reassuring since some rheumatism has improved during this period.

Professor Philippe Bertin: Basically, we can say that for rheumatoid arthritis, when the pregnancy is declared three times in four, the patient goes to see his condition improve especially after the 4th month of pregnancy. It is true that once in four, the condition may worsen, but it has the means to control the disease with treatments that are allowed during pregnancy. And to illustrate the positive side of pregnancy, there is even one person in 5 who come into complete remission during pregnancy.

For spondylitis is a bit different. Broadly speaking, pregnancy does not affect the disease. Sometimes, it can aggravate back pain or pain in the basin. However, this should not abandon the desire for pregnancy.

You are reassurance and you really want to have child. Who should you talk? To whom do you turn to?

Professor Philippe Bertin: The first is the spouse because there is information to seek common solutions to common finding in a mutual understanding to develop and eventually support ... Then tell his doctor of course and we must ensure that effective cooperation settled between you, the attending physician and two specialists the rheumatologist and gynecologist. We need the concerted follow-up and close throughout the pregnancy. It is in this spirit of cooperation and support multidisciplinary, that pregnancy will occur in an optimal way.

Today, people with inflammatory rheumatism can start a family naturally. By informing your rheumatologist about your child, you can too prepare calmly for the most beautiful day of your life!

Now submit articles and get massive traffic and exposure by visiting this website http://www.articlesland.com

About the Author
Nouman Umar is an online marketer and seo expert. You have answered questions regarding the pain you feel-the exact location, when it started, how long it lasts, whether it comes and goes, what activity causes it to hurt most-and responded to inquiries regarding past injuries to your knee, pain in other joints, family history of joint pain and whether or not any physician has ever given you a diagnosis of arthritis. Your physician suspects osteoarthritis, but to be sure, he/she will order a number of tests to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out any other possible causes of your pain.

X-ray and MRI

The first test you can expect is an x-ray of your knee which is taken from various angles to provide an accurate visualization of the damage in your joint. If the physician suspects damage to ligaments or a meniscus, you may also undergo an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).

Blood Tests

Inasmuch as there are several diseases that can cause arthritis or arthritis-like symptoms, your physician will order particular blood tests to detect and identify the presence of any disease other than osteoarthritis that may be the source of your pain. For example, patients with rheumatoid arthritis, as opposed to osteoarthritis, will have elevated levels of what is referred to as rheumatoid factor (caused by specific antibodies in the synovium or cell lining of flexible joints). Another blood test, called an erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR or "sed rate") indicates an inflammatory arthritis or other related condition-such as rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus-if the level is above a certain range. A test that measures the amount of uric acid in the blood may indicate or rule out gout as the cause of your joint pain. If your physician suspects a rheumatologic illness based on your health history, age and physical findings, there are a number of other blood tests that may be ordered to narrow the field.

Tests on Synovial Fluid

If the diagnosis is uncertain or your physician suspects an infection, a sample of synovial fluid may be withdrawn from your knee joint and sent for testing to confirm or rule out osteoarthritis. Examples of possible results are: Cartilage cells in the fluid which are indicative of osteoarthritis. A high white blood cell count which is a sign of an infection. A high uric acid level which is an indication of gout.

There are a number of other factors in the synovial fluid that may be tested if the physician needs further elaboration.

Results

The results are in. Your orthopaedic surgeon informs you that your diagnosis is indeed osteoarthritis. If you think you are alone in your misery, here are a few facts you might like to know: Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent form of arthritis, one of the most common diseases affecting humans and a common cause of disability. In 1998, it was estimated that more than 20 million Americans had symptomatic osteoarthritis (OA). As our population ages, the incidence of OA is expected to increase dramatically over the next 20 years. OA is the second most common reason men over 50 claim work disability. OA is a major cause of disability in persons over 65. OA is often present, although asymptomatic, as early as the second or third decade of life. By age 40, nearly everyone has some osteoarthritic changes in weight-bearing joints such as hip and knee. At age 75, it is a truly amazing human that does not have arthritic changes in at least one joint. According to radiologic studies (x-rays), OA of the knees is more common in women; OA of the hips is more common in men.

Options

Now that your diagnosis is confirmed, it is time to discuss your options. Your orthopaedic surgeon suggests a knee replacement and tells you about the several types of replacements that are currently considered state of the art. He/she explains the difference between a partial and a total knee replacement-including the new computer-guided minimally invasive approach used with total knee replacements-and the indications for each. In the end, your surgeon's opinion is that you would benefit by having a total knee replacement.

Questions to Ask

Before you agree to consider your surgeon's recommendation, make certain you ask the following questions: What are the details of the procedure that you are recommending? What is your experience with this procedure? How many have you done? Are you board certified? Why do you feel I need this operation now? If I don't have this surgery, what are the other options available to me? How do you anticipate this surgery will improve my current situation? Will the surgery be performed under local or general anesthesia? What are the risks involved in this surgery? What can I expect in the recovery process?

You may also want to get a second opinion as well as check to see that your health care company covers this procedure.

Preoperative Course

You are now ready to go to the next step which is planning for your surgery, but until you know exactly what to expect both pre-operatively and post-operatively, it is hard to know what adjustments you will have to make in your life.

You can anticipate further tests to ensure that you are healthy enough to withstand the surgery and the anesthesia and to make a full recovery. These may include (but not be limited to) a complete blood count, including electrolytes; tests to measure blood clotting time (APTT & PT); chest x-ray; electrocardiogram; and a blood test to detect your blood type and other blood type-related factors should a transfusion be required.

It is also commonplace to meet your anesthesiologist in advance of your surgery to discuss any past experiences with anesthesia that you may have had. The anesthesiologist will ask you if you have allergies to food or drugs and he/she will want to know if you have any false teeth, braces, bridge work or capped or bonded teeth that may require special consideration during the administration of general anesthesia. Finally, the anesthesiologist should be willing to answer any questions that you might have with respect to his/her part of the surgery such as the type of anesthesia (local or general) he recommends, how long you can expect to be under anesthesia, how long it will take you to fully awaken following the surgery and so on.

Either the orthopedic surgeon or the anesthesiologist (or both) should review any medications you currently take and advise you as to which ones you can continue (even on the day of surgery itself) and which ones you should discontinue several days prior to surgery, such as Warfarin or aspirin which purposefully lengthen the time it takes for blood to clot.

Ordinarily, patients are examined and given a pre-op work-up one or more days prior to surgery with the actual surgery performed on the day of admittance. Sometimes however, the patient is asked to come to the hospital the night before surgery.

Preoperative Preparation Discontinue any medication as directed by your physician You may be asked to scrub the operative area several times with a special antibacterial preparation on the day before or day of the surgery. You will be told not to eat or drink anything after midnight on the day of your surgery. You may be given an injection to help you relax just prior to surgery and if you are to have general anesthesia, the injection may include a medication designed to aid in the drying of secretions, the point being to reduce the amount of saliva produced while you are under anesthesia. An intravenous may be started before you leave for the operating room or after you arrive there. You will be taken by stretcher or wheel chair to the operating room.

Operating Room and Recovery Room

The surgery itself will take several hours and will vary from person to person based on the degree of damage that exists and the ease with which the implant is inserted. You can expect to have an incision about 3-4 in. long. If you have had general anesthesia, it will take some time (an hour or so) before you awaken. In some hospitals you will be sent to the Recovery Room and monitored until you are fully awake, then when your vital signs are stable and your surgical site meets a particular standard, you will be returned to your room. In other surgical centers and especially if you have had local anesthesia, you may be monitored in the operating area before being sent back to your room. You can expect to have an intravenous, a bandaged knee, and some discomfort, especially as the anesthesia wears off.

Post-operative Issues Pain Management - Most hospitals today allow individuals to manage their own pain with a medication pump that delivers a pain killer intravenously as needed. When your intravenous is removed, you may receive medication for pain either by intramuscular injection or by mouth. The quantity, frequency of administration, length of time needed, method of delivery and kind of medication varies from person to person. Blood Clot Prevention Compression stockings - One of the primary risks in knee surgery is the formation of blood clots in the lower leg veins. These clots, once formed, can migrate to the heart, lungs or brain resulting in heart attacks, cessation of breathing or stroke, all of which can be catastrophic. The best way to manage clots is to prevent their formation in the first place; therefore, a great deal of post-operative therapy involves attention to this issue. Immediately after surgery, you can expect to have electrically operated compression stockings applied. These stockings prevent blood from pooling in the lower extremities-a common factor in the formation of clots-by helping to reduce swelling and by assisting your circulation. You can expect to wear them continuously for the first few days following surgery and then for as long as six weeks thereafter, especially while you are sleeping, sitting or prone. Blood thinners - You can expect to take a blood thinning medication by subcutaneous injection for from 7-10 days. When you are discharged, you or a family member will be taught how to administer this medication. If you follow up your hospitalization in a rehabilitation center, the medication will be administered by hospital staff or if at home, it can be administered by a home health care representative. Ambulation and exercise - Hospital staff will assist you in getting out of bed as early as the day following surgery, but it is important to walk with the assistance of a walker or crutches at every opportunity because exercise and ambulation increase the blood flow to the surgical area which in turn helps to prevent clots and aids the healing process. Plan on using some walking aid-crutches, a cane or a walker-for 36 weeks post-surgery. Staples/Sutures:These are usually removed about 2 weeks following surgery. Driving and Employment: It is recommended that patients abstain from driving until they no longer need to walk with crutches, a cane or walker. Plan to take a leave of absence from work for 3-6 weeks. Of course, how long you need to be away from work will depend on the particular requirements of your job. Physical Therapy Individuals vary in their need for physical therapy, but despite differences you can be sure that some physical therapy will be ordered for you. The length of time that you will need to continue therapy will depend on your healing time, how well you can ambulate independently and your recovery in general. There are three primary types of rehabilitation services used: home health care, rehabilitation hospital, and out-patient rehabilitation. Warning Signs of Blood Clots It is important to know the warning signs of a blood clot in the event that one begins to form despite all your efforts at prevention. Take immediate action if you have (1) increased pain or tenderness in your calf or the inside of your thigh (2) increased swelling in your calf, ankle or foot (3) sudden shortness of breath (4) sudden onset of chest pain (5) localized chest pain with coughing (6) any changes in vision.

In spite of the warning above, total knee replacements have a better than 90% success rate and are far more effective at restoring mobility and relieving pain in patients than non-surgical treatment. If you are contemplating a total knee replacement, approach the experience with a positive attitude, become an informed consumer, have confidence in your surgeon's ability and look forward to an improved quality of life.

The information in the article is not intended to substitute for the medical expertise and advice of your health care provider. It can leave you unproductive for months on end, unable to do even the simplest tasks. You can prevent it, or treat it, though, with the help of massage by a therapist in Tampa.

Frozen shoulder is medically known as adhesive capsulitis. The name is quite descriptive since the condition involves the inflammation of the shoulder capsule or the connective tissue around the shoulder joint. This inflammation causes adhesions or abnormal bands of tissue that have fused, resulting in drastically reduced movement and chronic pain.

Stage one of the condition is called the "freezing stage". This is when pain slowly sets in, and may progress from six weeks to nine months. At the end of this period, the pain has worsened and motion has been lost. Stage two is called the "frozen stage" or the adhesive stage. By this time, the pain has slowly improved but the shoulder remains stiff for four to nine months. Stage three is called the "thawing stage" or recovery with a slow return to normal shoulder motion. This can take five months or even up to three years or more in some cases.

The condition is disabling and within its course, pain accompanies every movement. It is an ever present dull ache that can suddenly spasm and intensify with certain actions or postures. The pain also intensifies at night and in colder weather. Sleep is compromised, resulting in chronic fatigue, lowered resistance and immunity and other complications, among them satellite pain in surrounding tissue, the neck and back, and depression.

The exact cause of frozen shoulder is unknown and it sometimes occurs spontaneously without any triggering factor. This is called idiopathic frozen shoulder. There are also a number of factors that have been linked to it. One is injury or trauma that causes the shoulder to be unused for a certain period of time. Sometimes, surgery can cause such immobility, too. Frozen shoulder then arises as a consequence.

Another possible cause is an autoimmune disorder which attacks shoulder tissue and causes the adhesions. Furthermore, higher risk of getting frozen shoulder has been observed among people with connective tissue disorders, rheumatic disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, lung disease, heart disease and those who have had a stroke.

Prevention can be done when in high risk situations. Never allow the shoulder to remain immobile for long periods. Before pain sets in, or just when pain has begun to set in, full range of movement should be encouraged in all directions. Massage and physical therapy will be very beneficial at this stage.

Once frozen shoulder has really set in, though, treatment can be quite painful. Medication with analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids and even anesthetics may help with the pain and the inflammation. They will also allow manipulation and stretching to break up adhesions and scar tissue through massage therapy and physical therapy. Other methods of pain relief may include transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) to block nerve impulses and acupuncture, while other therapies may include the Bowen technique and chiropractic therapy. In extreme cases, surgery may have to be done, with the surgeon cutting through the adhesions and correcting other related problems that may have arisen in the shoulder.

Deep tissue massage and sports massage are two massage therapies that can alleviate and prevent frozen shoulder pain. For treatment, make sure that you approach a professionally trained and qualified massage therapist and that your massage regimen is done in consultation with your doctor in Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Carrollwood and Tampa. Remember, though, that prevention is always best. Don't allow frozen shoulder to set in before you take action.

About the Author
Massage Envy - Lutz
Contact Name: Kimberly Kitchen
17673 N Dale Mabry Hwy
Tampa, FL 33548
Co Main: 8138685400
Bus Fax: 8138685401
Email: kimberly.kitchen@massageenvy.com
Web Page: http://www.massageenvylutz.com
