Last week while researching claims from a local Tea Party activist, I found myself asking a family for proof that they had lost an unborn grandchild.

The Chicago area family is pro-health care reform and pro-U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski. They attended a town hall meeting, in fact. That proved to be a mistake.

Now go get the nearest box of Kleenex. Trust me:

Their daughter-in-law, Jenny, and an unborn grandchild died recently due in part, they believe, to a lack of health insurance. They said Jenny was not receiving regular prenatal care and ended up in an emergency room with double pneumonia that developed into septic shock. Her baby died in the womb, and Jenny died a few weeks later, leaving behind a husband and a 2-year-old daughter.

Catherina Wojtowicz, of Chicago's Mount Greenwood community, an organizer for a Tea Party splinter group, Chicago Tea Party Patriots, falsely claimed that the Houghs fabricated their story. In an e-mail, she called them operatives of President Barack Obama who "go from event to event and (cry) the same story."

There now. Aren't those Tea Animals compassionate? They really do care so deeply about their country and its citizens. Know what the Houghs got at the town hall meeting? Eye rolls and groans.

Mrs. Hough's daughter-in-law and grandchild were dead as a result of woefully-- deadly-- insufficient health care, and these small-minded, slime-dunked zealots mocked her.

Sometime we at TPC get nasty, vicious comments on our posts, and you'll see that we've deleted most of them. We often get asked why we're allowed to have our opinions, but "stifle free speech, the First Amendment" of others.

First, about the First: Read the Constitution. That's about preventing the government from stomping on your rights, not about your fellow citizens (who host blogs) from insisting that you treat each others (and us) with respect. It's about style, not substance. If you're a regular reader, that's pretty obvious.

Second: This is an opinion site. That's what we do. We snark, we opine, we snipe, we joke, we analyze, we are a little idiosyncratic, and we're allowed. Oh, and we're Progressive. If you disagree with us, fine. If you don't like our p.o.v. feel free to go elsewhere. In fact, start your own blog, and say whatever you'd like, that's your prerogative.

You are welcome to visit and schmooze as long as you engage in basic common courtesy.

In a previous post I laid out some guidelines:

As of January 1, 2009, I decided to make every attempt to delete troll comments if they are:
Uncivil
Pointlessly rambling
Serve no other purpose other than to attempt to provoke a fight
Redundant (ie: posting the same comment in several threads)
Argumentative, simply spewing lies, without providing substance/facts
Excessive in length (that goes for sympathetic Comments, too)
Random, uncalled-for, irrelevant snottiness without regard to the content of that particular post
If I left anything out, please feel free to add to the list.

There are exceptions to all of these, of course. If a comment is longer than usual, but it's from a Commenter who adheres to protocol 99.9% of the time, we tend to be lenient. If a Comment is relatively innocuous, but simply annoying, that's no biggie either.

Freedom of speech is one thing. Spewing gratuitous hostilities in an otherwise congenial setting is another. That's superfluous and destructive.

Setting standards for an environment that nurtures friendly, respectful, and spirited conversation is paramount. Anything that crosses the line will hereby be deleted.

I'm adding one more: No spam. It gets deleted, so don't even go there.

So, what have we learned? Baiting and insults are no-nos. Not a difficult concept. My YouTube site has garnered the most vile comments I've ever seen, especially when I post videos of President Obama. The consensus is that YouTube is a stomping ground for the "barely literate, bio-hazardous scum" (a quote from a fellow YouTuber). I've had to stop allowing comments on some posts.

That segues me into a relevant article that a Twitter pal of mine, Plutoniumpage, linked me to. Here are random excerpts from an interview with Stephen Fry. Please go read the whole piece:

If I don't want to hear people being unpleasant about me I should have the right to turn it off."

And-- to quote a very civil, very wise, very brilliant man-- that's the way it is. But here at TPC at least, we try to keep it pleasant.

What Cheney fears, I suspect, is that Gitmo will be shut down, that history will record it as the lowest point in US human rights ever, that the Cheney family will be tarred as the brand that destroyed America’s moral standing, and that Dick Cheney will become one of the darkest figures in modern American history.

I take issue with that. Dickless McHeartStent already is one of the darkest figures in modern American history.

I'll venture to say that he's worried that when Gitmo is shut down and the trials (real ones, not military commissions) get underway, the onion layers will be peeled back and more crimes will be revealed.

Overall, both Gitmo and Cheney were major disasters and harmful to our country's standing. And when you think about it, both inflicted torture on people, whether in that godawful prison or in homes all over America.

The book’s biggest surprise is Palin’s wide-eyed infatuation with show-business celebrities. [...]

Though Palin and McCain milked him for photo ops at the Republican convention, he is persona non grata now that he’s taking off his campaign wardrobe. [...] In Palin’s interview with Oprah last week, it was questioning about Johnston, not Katie Couric, that made her nervous.

The book’s most frequently dropped names, predictably enough, are the Lord and Ronald Reagan (though not necessarily in that order). Easily the most startling passage in “Going Rogue” [...] collates extended excerpts from a prayerful letter Palin wrote to mark the birth of Trig, her child with Down syndrome. This missive’s understandable goal was to reassert Palin’s faith and trust in God. But Palin did not write her letter to God; she wrote the letter from God, assuming His role and voice herself and signing it “Trig’s Creator, Your Heavenly Father.” If I may say so — Oy!

Even by the standard of politicians, this is a woman with an outsized ego. [...] The question journalists repeatedly asked last week — What are Palin’s plans for 2012? — is a red herring. Palin has no obligation to answer it. She is the pit bull in the china shop of American politics, and she can do what she wants, on her own timeline, all the while raking in the big bucks she couldn’t as a sitting governor. No one, least of all her own political party, can control her.

The fact-checking siege of “Going Rogue” — by the media, Democrats and aggrieved McCain campaign operatives alike — is another fruitless sideshow. [...] The more she is attacked for not being in possession of pointy-headed erudition, the more powerful she becomes as an avatar of the anti-elite cause. [...]

That demographic is white and non-urban [...] The affect is emotional — the angry air of grievance that emerged first at her campaign rallies in 2008, with their shrieked threats to Obama, and that has since resurfaced in the Hitler-fixated “tea party” movement (which she endorses in her book). It’s a politics of victimization and sloganeering with no policy solutions [...]

[...] Palin either recycled Dick Cheney verbatim (Obama is “dithering”) or ran aground. [...]

Some of her most ardent supporters realize that she’ll drive still more independent voters away if she fills in too many details. [...]
The demographic that Palin attracts is in decline; there’s no way the math of her fan base adds up to an Electoral College victory.
Yet among Republicans she still ties Mitt Romney [...]

Culture is politics. Palin is at the red-hot center of age-old American resentments that have boiled up both from the ascent of our first black president and from the intractability of the Great Recession for those Americans who haven’t benefited from bailouts. [...]

The only person who can derail Palin is Palin herself. Should she not self-destruct, she will doom G.O.P. hopes of a 2012 comeback. But the rest of the country cannot rest easy. The rage out there is larger than Palin and defies partisan labeling. [...] If Obama can’t tamp down that rage across the political map, Palin will at the very least pave the way for a demagogue with less baggage to pick up her torch.

I have to agree with that last sentence. Playing to emotions is an aphrodisiac that's hard to counter with logic, reason, and promises of sound policy. She has lit a fire that, like the Station Fire out here in California, will continue to smolder even when many believe it's been contained, and then flare up unexpectedly.

The Rushpublic plan for health care reform: Whittling it down, watering it down, blanding it down, wearing Dems down. Down, down down... Do I sense a pattern?

The Senate's second-ranking Democrat said Sunday he was open to changing the government-run public health insurance option in the chamber's health care bill to ensure that the measure passes. [...]
Asked about a possible compromise that would trigger a public option in the future if specific thresholds for coverage and costs go unmet, Durbin said there were "many variations on the theme."
"We are open because we want to pass the bill," Durbin said.

Open to what? Passing a diluted bill that eliminates any meaningful competition? Pleasing Big Insurance? Lining lawmakers' pockets with more special interest money?

Pacifying Traitor Joe?

Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who voted Saturday to start debate on the bill, reiterated Sunday he would join a Republican filibuster if the public option remains in the proposal when it comes time to end the debate.

"I don't think anybody feels this bill will pass" in its current form, Lieberman said on the NBC program, adding that the public option would be an unnecessary step now as the United States faces high unemployment and a growing federal deficit.

At the risk of sounding redundant, we need to put the pressure on Congress members by calling, e-mailing, calling, writing, calling, protesting loudly, and calling.

And we need to rid ourselves of Traitor Joe.

Breitbart: ‘This Message is to Attorney General Holder,’ Investigate ACORN ‘Or Else’

"Or else"? Really?

Right-wing activist Andrew Breitbart of BigGovernment.com and other conservative anti-Obama websites [issued] a direct threat, approaching blackmail, to the United States Attorney General, Eric Holder. Breitbart is angry that Attorney General Holder has not opened a federal investigation into ACORN and he issued a threat of releasing more tapes during the 2010 elections, unless Holder complies with his demands.

Blackmail. I'm sure Breitbart wishes it was whitemail, but when you put yourself in criminal jeopardy, beggars can't be choosers.

Breitbart together with conservative operatives James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles, released another heavily edited ACORN tape this week, which seems to show an ACORN employee assisting the two with an illegal prostitution scheme. [...]

“It was Hannah and James and me who were being investigated. That’s why we’ve been forced to offer this latest tape.”

Yes, that's right. Holder made him do it. Holder made him issue a threat, too. It's all the Attorney General's fault, because Breitbart is not in the least bit responsible.

Besides, he's probably just cranky because the paper he works for is shutting down.

“And this message is to Attorney General Holder: I want you to know we have more tapes–its not just ACORN. And we’re going to hold out until the next election cycle — or else, if you want to do a clean investigation, we will give you the rest of what we have. We will comply with you. We will give you the documentation we have from countless ACORN whistleblowers who want to come forward, but are fearful of this organization and the retribution — that they fear that this is a dangerous organization.”

“So if you will get into an investigation, we will give you the tapes, and if you don’t give us the tapes [sic], we will revisit these tapes come election time.”

ACORN is so dangerous, so lethal, such a threat to America that Breitfart, er -bart (typo) felt it necessary to issue a threat of his own... to the nation's head legal guy. Smart move.

Why would he take such a chance? Because he's mad, that's why! Because he and the secret videotapers are being sued, that's why! Because he's a fool, that's why!

There is also an investigation in California launched by Attorney General Jerry Brown at the request of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, which has infuriated Breitbart.

I don't know a whole lot about legal stuff, but IMHO, Breitbart's in a heap-o'-trouble.

[W]hile [Blanche] Lincoln considers voting against the bill, free clinics like the one today remain the only option for hundreds of thousands of people in her state. The next free clinic event is scheduled for December 9-10 in Kansas City, Mo.

We need to put the pressure on those members of Congress who feel the status quo is okay, and who are just fine with continuing to increase the profits for Big Insurance.

The 2010 march — called the “We the People Restore Our Constitution March, Rally and 9/11 Memorial” — is planned for Washington’s National Mall. Its other co-sponsor is an online activism group called ResistNet.com.

ResistNet’s Darla Dawald credited Beck with setting in motion the march, but said he’s not involved in its planning. “Glenn doesn’t want it to be about him – always about the people,” Dawald, who is leading march planning for ResistNet, wrote in an email.

That Glenn, he's so selfless, isn't he? What a shrinking violet.

The FoxNews.com logo adorns the lower right hand corner of the 912 Project homepage, which indicates it is “Brought to you by FOXNews.com” and links to the network’s website.

Big plan, indeed. One might even say corporate.
