Creating a PST in Outlook 2010

Here is the step-by-step guide to create a PST file in Outlook 2010. It’s pretty much the same as in Outlook 2007.

In the top left of Outlook, click on “File”.

Click on the Account Settings drop down, and then click “Account Settings…”

In the window that pops up, click the second tab “Data Files”

Click on the “Add…” icon, and then give your PST file a name (they call it “Outlook Data File, which makes much more sense to end users), choose where it goes, and then hit “OK”. By default in Windows 7, it goes into your My Documents folder into a folder called “Outlook Files”.

I’m not sure what Outlook 2010 does on earlier versions of Windows, but Outlook 2007 and earlier defaulted to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. I know that because I used to have a job upgrading PC’s in a large enterprise to Windows XP, and I had to manually move over the PST files that people forgot to back up. That path is burned into my brain :)

Close the Account Settings window, and you will be back to the main Outlook window. Your new PST (Outlook Data File) will be over on the left, and you can create new folders and drag mail into them (or setup rules).

Uninstalling Officescan from Computer

Problem: For those who have installed TrendMicro Officescan on their computer, they know uninstalling Officescan requires a password.

Solution: To uninstall the Officescan client without the need for a password follow this procedure...

1) Login to the pc with an account that has administrator privileges to the PC

2) Click on Start -> Run and type regedit and press Enter

3) In the tree on the left click the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to open the tree

4) Open the following branches SOFTWARE -> TrendMicro -> PC-cillinNTCorp –> CurrentVersion -> Misc.

5) In the right window click on the text that says "Allow Uninstall"

6) Replace the Value data: which is set to 0 with 1 and click OK

7) Open the Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and select TrendMircro Officescan Client from the list.

8) Click Uninstall and the software should be removed without requiring a password.

10 Reasons Why you should begin phasing out Exchange public folders

I have read this article this morning from http://www.blogs.techrepublic.com.com and I found it very interesting as I am also a Public Folder’s user.

Although many organizations make use of Exchange Server’s public folders feature, the time may be right to start phasing it out. The following is a list of possible reasons why you should get started now.

1. Microsoft says they’re going away

Since before the release of Exchange 2007, Microsoft has been telling us that public folders will eventually be discontinued. This hasn’t happened just yet though. Public folders are alive and well in Exchange 2010. Even so, public folders probably won’t be supported in the next version of Exchange.

2. Public folder stores can be resource intensive (full text indexing)

Public folders can rob your Exchange Server of memory, disk, and CPU resources. By offloading your public folder data, you may be able to improve your Exchange server’s performance.

3. Public folders are not designed for archiving data

Many public folder stores are misused. According to Microsoft, public folders are not designed for archiving data. If you use public folders to archive Exchange data, you would be better off using a journaling mailbox instead.

4. Public folders are not designed for document sharing and collaboration

Microsoft also says public folders are not designed for document sharing and collaboration, yet that is exactly what many organizations use them for. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server is much better equipped for collaboration tasks and for document sharing than public folders have ever been.

5. Public folder data can be difficult to restore

In Exchange 2007, Microsoft introduced the recovery storage group feature as a way of making it a whole lot easier to perform granular restorations of mailbox data. Although public folders are a part of the information store, just like mailbox databases, they can’t be restored using recovery storage groups. This means that if you ever have to restore a public folder, you may be in for a headache.

6. Public folders are finally optional

Prior to the release of Exchange 2010, public folders were used for storing free/busy data, and they were also used for OAB (offline address book) downloads. In Exchange 2010, however, public folders finally became an optional feature. As long as all of your clients are running Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010, you can get rid of your public folder store.

7. The concept of public folders is dated (long filenames, indexing)

At one time, there was a good reason for using public folders. Back in the days of Exchange Server 4, not many organizations were using long file names yet, and server indexing was still primitive. Public folders provided organizations with a great way of describing their data in granular detail and indexing it. Today, though, there are better tools for the job.

8. Public folders have been deemphasized

In Exchange Server 2007, Microsoft decided to deemphasize public folders. They’re still fully supported, but no new features were introduced. Public folders are also supported in Exchange 2010, but once again, there aren’t any new features. Essentially, this means that public folders are a stagnant feature because they have changed very little since Exchange 2003.

9. The management tools leave a lot to be desired

When Microsoft initially released Exchange Server 2007, you had only two options for managing public folders. One option was to manage public folders from the command line, using EMS commands. The other option was to keep an Exchange 2003 server on your network and use the Exchange System Manager for public folder management. SP1 for Exchange 2007 contains GUI-based public folder management tools, as does Exchange Server 2010. Even so, the tools aren’t anything to write home about.

10. Public folder data tends to collect dust

Several years back, I worked for a large organization that had an absolutely massive public folder hierarchy. The problem was that most of the public folder data had been in place since the days of Exchange 4. None of the current employees had a clue what the public folders had actually been used for, but nobody wanted to take responsibility for deleting them. My point is that you may have unimportant public folder data that’s just taking up space. What better time to prune the archives?

Adobe FlashPlayer fails to install

Many people have been experiencing issue with installing FlashPlayer on IE7/IE8. The issue is that the download manger gets to 100% then says “Error: Failed to Register”. After closing the download manager and trying to download the installer, the second error message appears: “Failed to install”

Below is the workaround (solution) provided by Flash_fix.

This solution works for Windows XP:
1. Uninstalll (clean) the Flash files from your computer. Click here to the see the instructions How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control
2. Reboot your computer.

You must have administrator privileges to successfully complete these following instructions.

Warning: these steps modify your registry entries.
4. Download the SubInACL tool from the Microsoft Download Center:
5. Download SubInACL.msi to a folder of your choice.
6. Download the reset_fp10.zip file.
7. Extract the reset_fp10.cmd. Important: Be sure that both the subinacl.exe and reset_fp10.cmd files are in the same location (folder)
8. Double-click reset_fp10.cmd.
9. This will open a command window and execute the SubInACL tool.
10. Do not use the machine while SubInACL is running.
11. When it is finished you will see "Press any key to continue".
12. Install the Flash Player from .

Defend your computer

Look for signs that a Web page is safe, before you enter sensitive personal or business data–a Web address with https (“s” for secure) and a closed padlock ( ) beside it. Never give sensitive info in response to an e-mail or instant message(IM) request.

Think before you click

Pause before you open attachments or click links in e-mail or IM even if you know the sender; they could be phony. Confirm with the sender that the message is real or visit the official Web site by typing the address yourself. Be wary of clicking links or buttons in pop-up windows.

Use strong passwords

Lock your online accounts, computer, phone, and other devices with passwords at least eight characters (longer is better), and include upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. Keep passwords and PINs secret. Don’t disclose them to coworkers or businesses (like an Internet café operator), or be tricked into giving them away. Don’t use the same password everywhere.

Protect yourself from e-mail scams

Look out for alarmist messages, misspellings and grammatical errors, deals that sound too good to be true, requests for sensitive info like account numbers, and other signs of a scam. Turn on a fi lter that warns you of suspicious Web sites.

Protect your data on the go

When you use public Wi-Fi, choose the most secure option, even if you have to pay for it. It could include password-protection and encryption. Confirm the exact spelling of the wireless network you’re connecting to. Beware of clever (slightly misspelled) fakes.
Encrypt the data on your laptop (or USB fl ash drive) in case you lose it or it’s stolen. Guard your laptop, smartphone, and PDA as carefully as your wallet.

Keys to password strength: length and complexity

An ideal password is long and has letters, punctuation, symbols, and numbers.

Whenever possible, use at least 14 characters or more.
The greater the variety of characters in your password, the better.
Use the entire keyboard, not just the letters and characters you use or see most often.

Create a strong password you can remember

There are many ways to create a long, complex password. Here is one way that may make remembering it easier:

Switching User in Mac OS X

In Mac OS X, there feature called Fast User Switching allows you to simultaneously log into two or more OS X accounts on one computer, and switch quickly between them. Unlike Windows Vista or Windows 7, this feature is not turned on by default on Mac OS X.

Here are the steps enable Fast User Switching:

From the Apple menu, select System Preferences... .
In System Preferences, from the View menu, select Accounts
If the padlock in the bottom left-hand corner of the window is closed, click it and authenticate with an administrator account.
On the bottom left side of the window, click Login Options.
On the right side of the window, check Show fast user switching menu as: (Mac OS X 10.6) or Enable fast user switching (Mac OS X 10.5 and earlier). If a sheet then drops down, click OK. Choose Name, Short name, or Icon to determine how the user switching icon appears in the menu bar.
To log into a different account, click the fast user switching icon in the menu bar, and from the pull-down menu that appears, select the account you wish to log into.
When prompted, provide the password for the account. It may take a moment for the login process to complete. After this, the screen will rotate and the other account will become dominant.

The drawback of this feature is that each user logged into a system eats up memory and the more applications open for each user, the more likely the system will swap stuff into virtual memory and system performance will suffer.

iGetter and RapidShare

iGetter is a powerful, full featured download manager and accelerator and is also known as RapidShare compatible.
iGetter can greatly improve the speed of your downloads using segmented downloading. In addition it allows auto resume on broken downloads, queue filtering by various criteria, site explorer, history list, scheduling downloads for low traffic periods, auto redial on broken connection, auto hang-up and shut down on completion, and much more.

However, lots of people (Mac OS X users) seem to have problem setting up iGetter that enable them to download multiple RapidShare files (.rar, .avi etc).
Below is a "step by step" guideline that will help you set up iGetter with a RapidShare Premium Account.

After downloading and installing iGetter, go to "Tools" and select "Integrate with Internet broswers" option. You will also need to install "Flashgot Addon" for Firefox.

Go to "iGetter" Tab and select "Preferences" as shown in the picture below (Make sure you have your RapidShare "username" and the "password" in hand).

Then you need to enter the following entries along with your user info in the Site Manager preferences of iGetter: "http://.rapidshare.com/" and "http://.rapidshare.com/files/"

(note that it's not "http://rapidshare.com/" but "http://.rapidshare.com/" which includes all subdomains)

Once you finish with above configuration, you now go ahead and select as many rapidshare doawnlable files as possible and proceed as shown in the image below.

Click "Ok" and...

You should now be able see that the status of your download as shown below.

There are several commands (keyboard combinations) on the Mac that you can use to take snapshots of the screen:

Command-Shift-3: Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it as a file on the desktop
Command-Shift-4: then select an area: Take a screenshot of an area and save it as a file on the desktop
Command-Shift-4, then space, then click a window: Take a screenshot of a window and save it as a file on the desktop
Command-Control-Shift-3: Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it to the clipboard
Command-Control-Shift-4, then select an area: Take a screenshot of an area and save it to the clipboard
Command-Control-Shift-4, then space, then click a window: Take a screenshot of a window and save it to the clipboard

In Leopard, the following keys can be held down while selecting an area (via Command-Shift-4 or Command-Control-Shift-4):

Space, to lock the size of the selected region and instead move it when the mouse moves
Shift, to resize only one edge of the selected region
Option, to resize the selected region with its center as the anchor point

Installing Checkpoint SecureClient on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

I recently upgraded my Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) to 10.6 (Snow Leopard). Since I am a heavy Checkpoint SecureClient user, the first I did after the installation of the new OS was to try to install Checkpoint SecureClient. My first surprise was that when I went to Checkpoint website, I found out that there was no SecureClient for Snow Leopard (only for 10.5). I however went ahead and downloaded the 10.5 version but when I tried to run it: "BANG" -- I received I message saying that the application cannot be installed on this computer. I did not know what to do but I quickly found a way around. Thanks to Sysadmins-World

There are few steps to follow in the process of getting SecureClient works on Mac OS 10.6. Please, make sure you follow all the steps described here.

STEP 1: DOWNLOAD, EDIT AND INSTALL SECURECLIENT FOR MAC OS 10.5

A - Download the SecureClient

Go to Checkpoint website and download SecureClient for Mac OS 10.5
Extract (unzip) the Package and try to run it. You will get an error message. But do nor worry! Go to point (B) below

B - Edit and Install SecureClient Package

When to try to install secureclient, the installer checks up for the Darwin Kernel version 9. but in Snow Leopard we have version 10. So two files need to be edit within the installer package.

Just right click on the installer and select Show Package Contents. This opens finder within the package.
Go to Contents/Resources.
Open TextEdit, use vi in a shell or whatever you prefer to edit a simple file
On file “InstallationCheck” change the number 9 in line 8 to number 10: if [ "$MAJOR" != "10" ]; then
Same on file “postinstall “ change the number 9 in line 84 to number 10

That’s it. Now go ahead and install SecureClient and reboot your system. Changes need to make afterwards in order to have it starting.

STEP 2: GETTING SECURECLIENT TO START

After rebooting your system, when you try to open secureclient, you will get the error message below.

A - SecureClient fails to start

Now this gets just a bit more tricky. Apple has moved some options of kextload to kextutil in 10.6. Checkpoint hardcoded such an option -s in two binary files. This option is to create the symbol files in the Checkpoint directory. It does not exist anymore in kextload, and is now provided in kextutil. But creating the symbol files is only needed for debug reasons, so not really necessary. Therefore I only replaced the option -s with option -r to fill up the space, because the binary file should not change in size. Two binary files have to be changed with an hexeditor.

Preparation:

Download and install a hexeditor. 0xED is one of it.
After inserting the first command, it will ask you for your local user password (User needs Administrator permission)

Note: Please note that in Leopard and Snow Leopard, all the download files are stored by default in the Download folder in your home drive. To proceed with the step described below, MAKE SURE YOU COPY THE 0XED FILE TO YOUR DESKTOP AND EXTRACT IT THERE.

Open the terminal application from Utilities folder and type:.
sudo cp /opt/CPsrsc-50/bin/StartupItemsMgr $HOME/Desktop
sudo cp /opt/CPsrsc-50/boot/SecureClient/SecureClientStarter /$HOME/Desktop
sudo chown $USER /$HOME/Desktop/StartupItemsMgr
sudo chown $USER /$HOME/Desktop/SecureClientStarter
Now run 0xED and choose File/Open Files from the Menu to load the StartupItemsMgr andSecureClientStarterfrom your Desktop in it.
From Menu Edit choose Find/Find or just press Apple-F and type in to find: “kextload -s” and type in replace “kextload -r”
Click on Replace All

Save and close …
Now once you succeeded editing copy those back by typing in the terminal window:
sudo cp $HOME/Desktop/StartupItemsMgr /opt/CPsrsc-50/bin/
sudo cp $HOME/Desktop/SecureClientStarter /opt/CPsrsc-50/boot/SecureClient/
rm $HOME/Desktop/StartupItemsMgr
rm $HOME/Desktop/SecureClientStarter
Reboot and you should have SecureClient starting …

I also succeeded by doing all the changes on the installer package. Probably only interesting if you have a few Macs to install. As soon as I have a bit more time I could write it down here.

Outlook Desktop Notification Tool Tip

As some, if not all, of you have experienced, the Outlook notification does not come up if you have set up Rules/Filters to go into folders (vs the Inbox).

In order to turn them back on, the “Display Desktop Alert” action must be explicitly set for a Rule.

Steps to turn this on:

1. Go to Tools->”Rules and Alerts…”

2. Choose the rule you would like to modify and click on Change Rules->”Edit Rule Settings…”

3. Click on the Next button and in the “Select action(s)” step (after Select Condition), scroll down and check on “Display a Desktop Alert”.

I have not spent the time yet on finding out how to turn this attribute on globally or modify all rules to have a certain attribute set so feel free to share if you know or discover how to. For now, I had to set it manually for each rule. :(

Finding the list of Multiple DNS Servers on a Domain

The easiest way to find the list of all the DNS Servers on your Domain (Private) or of a Corporation on the Internet (Public DNS Servers) is to make use of NSLOOKUP Command.

Here is how to proceed:

Open the Command Line
Type the following: NSLOOKUP and then press Enter.
> set type=ns
> Type_your_domain_name (i.e. tratra.org)
Server: Server01.tratra.org
Address: 192.168.0.1
tratra.org nameserver = server01.tratra.org
tratra.org nameserver = server02.tratra.org
tratra.org nameserver = server03.tratra.org
tratra.org nameserver = server04.tratra.org
server01.tratra.org internet address = 192.168.0.1
server02.tratra.org internet address = 192.168.1.1
server03.tratra.org internet address = 192.168.2.1
server04.tratra.org internet address = 192.168.3.1

Exchange 2007 Legacy Mailbox to User Mailbox

For Systems (or Exchange Server) Administrator or Help Support (Helpdesk), if you "mistakenly" create a new mailbox user using Active Directory Users and Computer (ADUC), you will notice that the mailbox you created for that user is tagged/displayed in the Exchange 2007 Management Console as a legacy mailbox. You will loose some features of Exchange 2007 in this mode.

To fix this issue, you need to remove the legacy tag in Exchange 2007 by running the command below (in step 3) in Exchange Management Shell.

Note: This command can be directly performed on one of the Exchange Servers on your network/domain or from your desktop computer. Here, I am going to describe how to run the command from a client computer. If you are running from the Exchange Server box, then go directly to step 2.

1 - Install Microsoft Exchange Management Tools from the Exchanger Server 2007 CD that will also install “Exchange Management Console” and “Exchange Management Shel” on the client computer (Windows XP or Windows Vista with SP1).

Note: Please note that installing Exchange Management Tools requires some steps to follow. If you are not familiar with the instalation, I recommend you read this great article from MSExchange.org. It gives all the steps that will help you out with the installation.

2 - You must Log in as a domain Administrator or member of the domain admin group to be able to run the command

3- Click on Start --> Programs or All Programs --> Exchange Management Tools --> and select "Exchange Management Shell"

3- In the command line that opens, type or copy and paste the following command: Set-Mailbox -Identity "alias" -ApplyMandatoryProperties

4 - Just change "alias" with the mailbox name or the alias and keep the quotations on it.

Uninstalling SecureClient from Mac OS 10.5

SecureClient (VPN-1) extends the VPN to remote users for safe network access and communication. It encrypts and authenticates data to make connections completely secure, and enables administrators to enforce desktop policies for additional security.

Lots of Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) users seem to experience problems removing the SecureClient from their systems. It is a very easy and straight forward process.

To uninstall SecureClient,

1) Go to Applications->Check Point SecureClient folder
2) Double-click on the "Uninstall SecureClient" icon. The following window will open prompting you whether you want to remove SecureCleint or not.
3) Type "Y" (without the quotes) and press Enter

4) Enter your password and press Enter or click OK
5) Reboot your system and you are all set!

Then you need to enter the following entries along with your user info in the Site Manager preferences of iGetter: "http://.rapidshare.com/" and "http://.rapidshare.com/files/"

(note that it's not "http://rapidshare.com/" but "http://.rapidshare.com/" which includes all subdomains)

Once you finish with above configuration, you now go ahead and select as many rapidshare doawnlable files as possible and proceed as shown in the image below.

Click "Ok" and...

You should now be able see that the status of your download as shown below.

Using Gmail Notifier with HTTPS

The Google Notifier is an application that shows you alerts in your menu bar, so you can see when you have new Gmail messages or upcoming Google Calendar events without having to open a web browser.

However, with the recent add of an option/security feature in Gmail to allow user to use HTTPS for the login and Gmail session, Gmail Notifier does not seems to cooperate well with this Gmail new security feature. Gmail Notifier constantly gives the following error message when users set their Gmail to use the "Always use HTTPS" option in Gmail Settings:

"An error has occurred.
Cannot connect to your mailbox.
Service temporarily unavailable"

Solution: Google has released a patch that fixes the problem (only for windows users. Mac OS X does not seem to experience this issue).

Download the patch: http://www.google.com/mail/help/downloads/notifier_https.zip
Open up the folder.
Double-click on the file called notifier_https.reg to install it.
Click 'yes' when you're asked to confirm if you want to add the information to the registry.
Restart the Notifier and you are all set.
