One of the pioneering figures in the global Latin Alternative movement, Bruno Garcia (a.k.a. Sergent Garcia) is bringing his uplifting and defiant sound to festivals and clubs across the US and Canada.

A revolutionary at heart, Sergent Garcia takes stabs at the status quo with hard-hitting lyrics blended with funky grooves spiked with salsa, reggae, cumbia, ska, rock and hip-hop. Sergent Garcia’s albums have sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and his latest, Una y Otra Vez (Time and Time Again) is now available on the Cumbancha label. A critically-acclaimed tour-de-force, Una y Otra Vez offers a musical journey to the heart of Colombia, currently the source for some of Latin America's hottest sounds. Having become enchanted with the country after a highly successful Latin American tour, Bruno returned to Colombia, deepening his friendships and musical connections through collaborations with the stars of the vital underground electrotropical scene, including Bomba Estéreo, La Mojarra Eléctrica, La-33, Sidestepper and others. About.com says of the album, "It's fresh, it's topical, it's relevant, and it's fun enough to blast from your car speakers ad infinitum until the warm weather subsides (and beyond)."

&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="http://sergentgarcia.bandcamp.com/album/una-y-otra-vez"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Una y Otra Vez by Sergent Garcia&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;

Grab a Free Track with Li Saumet of Bomba Estéreo on Sergent Garcia's Facebook Page

Sergent Garcia emerged out of the churning underground musique metisses movement of Paris in the 1990s where punk rock attitude, hip hop swagger, latin swing and reggae consciousness blended together to form a powerful sound. Having grown up in a house where Spanish, French, Algerian and West African culture overlapped, Bruno Garcia first earned fame with the French punk rock band Ludwig von 88. After falling in love with Latin and Caribbean music, Bruno created the Sergent Garcia persona and quickly became one of Europe and Latin America’s most successful artists. A stirring combination of grooving multicultural grooves and outspoken political expression continues to be the heart of the Sergent Garcia sound and the band’s live shows are renowned worldwide for their sense of celebration and conviction.

SERGENT GARCIA'S UNA Y OTRA VEZ TOUR

On Amazon.com Agadez peaked at #2 on the World Music chart and #72 in Music over all, and even topped Rihanna's hit pop album Loud for a while landing at #8 on the R&B sales chart! For the past three weeks, Agadez has been in the top ten on Billboard's World Music Charts, peaking at #6.

In the weeks following the album's release NPR continued to give Agadez praise with two reviews. The first was on Fresh Air with Terry Gross where critic Milo Miles called Bombino, "a young performer with the charisma and probing imagination to become the first Tuareg star." NPR's flagship news program All Things Considered followed with critic Banning Eyer asserting, "Bombino makes the suffering of an ancient people in a harsh and distant land sound both strangely contemporary and universally appealing." Canada's Exclaim raved a week later calling Agadez, "beautiful, passionate, refreshing music."

Bombino's album is generating incredible buzz in the UK and Europe as well. The UK's premier world music magazine, Songlines has made Agadez a "Top of the World" pick. Germany's Hessischer Rundfunk radio program in Frankfurt chose Agadez as the album of the week while Spain's World Music published an extensive feature noting, "This born fighter not only has a great technique on the guitar, but also has excellent qualities as a singer and composer" In France the raves keep coming with Vibrations publishing a beautiful 4 page spread on young Tuareg artists featuring Bombino, and the daily L'humanite writing that, "Bombino's music goes straight to the heart."

The buzz is also burning up the blogosphere where Bill Meyer the influential blog Dusted wrote of Bombino's "innate melodicism" and went on to say, "his tunes are equally winning whether led by his soulful voice or his tart guitar." Huffington Post called the album, "a spiritual and political masterpiece." Melophobe's 50 word review said Bombino has "a guitar tone lush as an oasis" and Vivoscene went so far as to say, "If you never buy another record in your life, buy Agadez."

Bombino is available at your favorite retailer and directly from Bombino's Bandcamp page where we have the Exclusive Digital Bonus Version available as a free download when you purchase the physical digipak CD. Open Door is the highly anticipated new project from Grammy-award winning neo-soul diva India.Arie. In this fresh musical offering, Arie partners with Israeli singer-songwriter and Cumbancha recording artist Idan Raichel – a driving force in contemporary world music – to create a cross-genre collection of songs that are poignantly relevant to a global audience. Stripped of overproduced instruments and emboldened by their cause, the two artists confidently deliver one of the most honest musical expressions that has reached the stage in years. The tour will be booked by IMN (International Music Network), the booking agency for Idan Raichel, Habib Koite, and other artists from the Cumbancha artist roster.

Arie met Raichel in Israel where she traveled in 2008. Together, they have since written more than fourteen tracks and have performed onstage at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in Oslo, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and New York’s Museum of Jewish Heritage. At a private listening show held last summer in Atlanta, the artists debuted Open Door, an album’s worth of emotionally stirring material.

Fans of Arie and Raichel got their first taste of the project with the video for "Gift of Acceptance", the first song from the collection made public.

Open Door delivers consistent themes of acceptance and unity that lay the foundation for an impassioned body of work. This penetrating collection forges cultural divides and exemplifies the raw power of open, simple production. Arie has found in Raichel a self-described “musical soulmate” who breathes new life into her signature brand of raw, empowered soul. Open Door is stunning array of effortlessly blended styles that Arie describes as, “the most authentic musical expression of my life thus far.” The authentic East-meets-West experience features minimal production; piano, percussion, strings, winds, and multilingual lyrics sung in Hebrew and English. With an album release date set for this summer, the Open Door project will tour the US in Summer and Fall 2011.

www.cumbancha.com
Cumbanchahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08516439856375305278noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3842504976723221864.post-13554329582889137562011-03-10T13:30:00.002-05:002011-03-10T13:32:59.346-05:00eTown hosts Razia & Brett Dennon

In January the forward thinking, socially minded radio program eTown brought the Malagasy native Razia out to Colorado to record a live show and share the stage with fellow guest Brett Dennon. Over the winter, the band has developed a new body of music pulling from roots traditions and continued to hone their craft of cohesive storytelling through music in this world where cultures and ideas are in increasingly paradoxical and striking relationship to each other.

The tour kicks off on April Fool's Day with a hometown show at The Independent supporting Voice of Roma (VoR), a non-profit helping give voice to the Roma people. The band has partnered with VoR to bring attention to the uncertain status of the Roma in Europe and beyond. On the road, Rupa & the April Fishes will share new material based on Rupa's recent expedition to Chiapas, Mexico, a center of indigenous resistance, where as part of an artist residency sponsored by EDELO (a local activist cultural space) she collaborated with artists and children to create songs in the Tzotzil language.

Rupa and the band are committed to finding and hearing these cracks and fissures in dominant culture where, like vegetation reclaiming the concrete jungle, vital creativity meets and struggles with the most desperate of circumstance. To this end the group's next year will include a musical journey to the global south where the band will collaborate with street visual artists, filmmakers, activists, farmers, teachers, healers and storytellers.

Rupa & the April Fishes are building a movement where sound both reflects and sparks the urgency of cultural oppression. With new members joining the band including the hot Latin trumpeter Mario Silva and composer/accordionist Rob Reich of Tin Hat Trio, Rupa & the April Fishes are ready to take the world by storm once again.

APRIL FOOLS TOUR 2011

<tr Mtukudzi and Afel Bocoum, Rupa & the April Fishes head down the California coast, and Chiwoniso brings her soulful sound to club stages from the east coast to the Midwest. Curated by International Music Network (IMN), the Acoustic Africa tour includes Habib Koité, the Malian superstar whose exciting concerts have endeared him to audiences worldwide, Oliver Mtukudzi, the best-selling artist in his home country of Zimbabwe, and Afel Bocoum, a guitarist, singer, and composer from Mali whose songs evoke the evolution of traditional Malian society. The Acoustic Africa tour was inspired by the Putumayo World Music compilation of the same name that featured many of Africa’s greatest singer-songwriters in stripped down displays of acoustic mastery.

The Acoustic Africa Tour begins February 26th and continues through April.

Rupa & The April Fishes

"Combining the sensual lyricism of Latin American nueva trova with the rhythmic punch of cumbia and the theatricality of cabaret, the April Fishes' sound is ecstatic and powerfully evocative." – LA TIMES

VIEW FULL TOUR DATES

Rupa & the April Fishes hold up a carnival mirror to life and present a warped, humorous and occasionally disquieting reflection. Chris had joined filmmaker Banker White and Zach Niles on their famous trip to Sierra Leone in 2002 when the group first met and became fascinated with the band that eventually became known as Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars.

During this recent reunion, Chris and the band recorded the song Iñez, a crafty mixture of the acoustic pop that Chris is known for and the unique African reggae and uplifting vibes that the Sierra Leone's Refugee All stars have championed. The tour, which starts on November 3rd in New York City, brings the acclaimed singer to major venues across the continent, and marks the first time the São Paulo native has toured outside of Brazil.

Luísa Maita has exploded onto the international music scene since the release of her debut album Lero-Lero, released on Cumbancha Discovery this summer. Within a week of the release, Lero-Lero skyrocketed to #1 on the iTunes Latin chart & #1 on Amazon's Latin Bestseller chart. Critics from National Public Radio to Huffington Post and Rolling Stone Brazil and influential tastemaker blogs have welcomed Luísa as a fresh new talent in Brazilian music. Tickets for many venues are already on sale. The full touring schedule is below.

Today, the discerning editors at iTunes are releasing the striking title track, "Lero-Lero" as the Single of the Week, a free download promotion that will put Luísa's music in front of hundreds of thousands Latin music fans. Luísa Maita can set a love song to a martial arts rhythm, invoke harsh realities of ghetto life with gentleness and dry-eyed humanity and, most of all, use her fluid, versatile voice and rich musical heritage to make it all feel like one coherent whole. Lero-Lero is a discovery but if she keeps making albums this good she may very well be on her way to international stardom."
You can listen to the full piece and stream three tracks off the album at NPR.org.

STREAM THE FULL ALBUM LERO-LERO HERE
DOWNLOAD A FREE SINGLE FROM LERO-LERO HERE
BUY LERO-LERO HERE

BUY AMAZON MP3 ALBUM WITH EXCLUSIVE MAGA BO REMIX

WATCH VIDEOS

www.cumbancha.com
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0
