I've actively observed and participated in social media for over 10 years. I downloaded Instagram in 2010 and posted my first photo, an over-filtered picture of my living room. I used to start my mornings reading a variety of three different blogs. Three specific ones wrote daily posts putting beautiful pictures on a page documenting their daily life. I couldn't get enough. I loved being able to look into someone else's life; what they ate for dinner, how they cleaned their bathroom, what presents they were going to get their husbands for Christmas.

I watched it all.

They moved to Instagram and the influencer boom was catastrophic to my mental well-being. It went beyond trying to keep up. I never felt good enough. It was perfect photos of perfectly curated lives. From wall paint colors to nurseries, to the perfect instagramable dog. It was people liking, commenting, and being invested in a set group of people and me not understanding why everyone cared. I still do not really understand it. I cared. These people that I followed, I cared about their lives. The baby announcements, the 100k weddings, the matching bachelorette shirts. I wanted it and I wanted the following that came with it. The thousands of likes, the comments, the questions.

As an impressionable 20something year old that was living with her parents and her baby, this lifestyle was all I wanted. I wanted the all-white kitchen to take photos of my son and me making cookies. I wanted the beautiful master bathroom so I could share my skincare routine. This lifestyle was my driving force.

Jump forward to today. 2021. I've tracked my son's life with these desires. He's 10 and I've spent so many of these years trying so hard to fit my life into what I thought it should be like in little squares. I would like to change that. I want to go back to the mornings of looking into people's everyday lives by reading their words and the photos that were so raw and unedited.

I thought about starting a new blog, giving it some trendy name, but that's beside the point. That goes against what I want. Simple, easy, real.

Here's to 2022- I'm in the middle of reconstructing my life to be so much more.

Trying to create the photos that I saw everyone else taking. Hating the results because they weren't perfect.

Begin Again

Tomorrow I start my second year of being a high school teacher. I plan on telling my students that high school is a fresh start. They have an opportunity to change and be whatever they want. When going over my first day plans and the quote I'm going to use, I realized that my advice applies to me. At anytime I can change who I am to be who I want to be. I recently took the time to write down what makes me happy and found myself missing my blog. I love Instagram but miss the journaling aspect of blogging. That brings me to this. This fresh start for my blog. I know that I'm busier now then I have ever been but I need to find moments to create and to breathe. So, Welcome! or Welcome back! I don't know what direction I'll take this but I'm excited to begin this journey again.
