Starting A Home Sewing Business - Take It One Stitch At A Time

If you want to work from home, you will soon find out that paid home employment is very hard to find. How about starting your own business from home? If you are good at sewing, you could use your skills to start your own home based sewing business. There are all kinds of sewing from tailoring to delicate embroidery and most of them can be used as the basis for an enjoyable and profitable home based business.

In the past, home sewing work consisted mainly of women at home working on industrial sewing machines assembling ready cut garments as outworkers for local factories. This was "piece work" ie the woman was paid per finished piece of work. The big sewing machines were noisy monsters, so it was impossible for a woman to sew and listen to music or carry on a conversation at the same time. It was hard work but quite well paid if you could work fast. This type of working at home job is less common nowadays because it is cheaper for factory owners to send the work abroad where wages are lower.

Doing sewing as a home business, does not involve a return to monotonous, noisy piece work; there are far more pleasant and creative ways to earn a living with needle and thread where you can be your own boss and not a wage slave for a factory owner.

The first thing that springs to my mind when anyone mentions sewing as a home based business, is dressmaking and wedding dresses obviously take top place. The vast majority of brides planning a white wedding want a dress (and bridesmaid dresses) specially made for their big day. If you have a talent for dressmaking, bridal outfits will certainly offer a good way of earning a substantial income.

A less glamorous but equally necessary service is in garment alterations. Shops used to offer this service, but nowadays it is usually only possible to find someone to alter or repair a garment by making enquiries of local dry-cleaners. It is a sad truth that we live in a wasteful society where perfectly serviceable garments will be thrown away because of a broken zip. However, there are still people around who will want to have a zip replaced in a favourite garment, so a business in repairs and alterations can be profitable, if your local dry cleaners do not offer this service they might be prepared to send customers to you.

Making soft furnishings to order is a good money earner. The people who can't even sew on a button far outnumber the people who are good at sewing and enjoy it. The people in the former group will be eager customers for someone who can make cushions and covers and curtains in exactly the right colours and styles. The ability to design, make and hang fashionable window dressing is practically a licence to print money - at least it will seem that way if you ever receive a bill for this service!

One of the nicest ways to earn money from sewing is by making soft toys. Somehow cuddly creatures have always managed to stay in fashion and there is a market for everything from stuffed rats to dinosaurs to floppy rag dolls. It must be very satisfying to earn money at home from making items that will be cherished by a child, from infancy into the teenage years.

Starting a home based sewing business requires little in the way of financial investment. If you intend to do dressmaking, you will need a robust sewing machine and an overlocking machine. Don't let anyone try to convince you a pressing machine is essential, it won't do anything you can't do with an iron and a damp cloth. These tools of your trade should last for many years and will earn what they cost you many times over. If you have a room that can be dedicated to sewing, that is great but in reality, you can run a sewing business from your kitchen table. If you want to build up a stock, for example of toys for a Christmas fete, you will need some storage space but the stock is not perishable so any dry clean garage or shed space would be fine.

Apart from the obvious tools and accessories, your expenses will be for materials and advertising. Always take a deposit to cover the cost of materials before beginning work on anything made to order so you won't risk being left out of pocket. Advertising is essential to any business that is just starting up. You can circulate fliers, buy advertising space in local newspapers, put up a website and all sorts of other things which are fairly low cost. A good way of becoming known is by advertising in targeted magazines, eg if you are making toys, place your ads in mother and baby magazines and advertise a local play groups. If you are making wedding dresses, advertise in bride oriented publications and try to do some sort of joint venture or reciprocal recommending with the local florist or wedding planner. Once you have a few satisfied customers you will benefit from repeat orders and your reputation will become known via the all important word of mouth. When this starts to happen you are well on the way to having your home business all sewn up.

Author: Maddy Cranley

No sooner than the last chocolate has been popped into our mouths and the roses have been hung to dry, St. Valentine steps aside for St. Patrick as green takes over from red to mark the next commercial milestone on the calendar. Shamrocks are everywhere even if their signature emerald green is not quite aligned with today's fashion palette which features more avocado, pear and lime shades - a green with much more yellow than blue. As well, green has become a strong symbol of the environmental movement and is earnestly displayed by political parties, coalitions and planet-saving products.

Concern for the environment in our everyday lives has finally found its rightful place. Recycling is a good thing and has become a regular practice. Just a few years ago, we didn't give a moment's thought to throwing a tin can into the garbage. Now a pang of guilt is felt if we toss out the odd non-recyclable juice container. Of course, our natural resources are there to be wisely enjoyed and with ingenuity we can squeeze out a little more value from nature's gifts.

Our knitting craft gives us the opportunity to make a contribution to the recycling movement. Flea markets and tag sales can be searched for "gently used" knitted garments. These garments if made from natural fiber (even if moth-eaten) can be an opportunity to finally try a fulling or felting project. If there are no garment labels to indicate fiber content, a quick burn test can easily determine if the yarn is of natural or man-made fiber. Over a sink or bowl of water, take a six-inch length of yarn and with a match light one end, allowing to burn for one-half inch. Extinguish the flame and when cool, examine the burnt portion. If the end is a hard charred lump, you have a synthetic yarn. If you are able to crumble the burnt portion between your fingertips, it is surely a natural fiber yarn.

Once the fiber has been identified as a natural fiber from an animal source, most often wool, place your "finds" in the hot water cycle of your washing machine in a sudsy soap solution. In the strictest sense you will be "fulling" these garments and the result will be felted sweaters ready to harvest for felted fabric. Now that you can cut this felt as yardage, even simple shapes can be stitched together to fashion a scarf accented with decorative stitching on the seams and edges. Cut out the front sections of a vest from the newly felted pieces and contrast with a slippery satin fabric for the back. If doing decorative stitching, remember to keep the yarns compatible so that laundering will pose no problems.

Then there's unravelling - an activity for someone who has tremendous patience or likes to test their patience. Be warned, it can turn into an Olympic recycling event if the sweater proves difficult to undo. I have a friend who bought a sweater at a flea market for twenty-five cents. She happened to love the particular color of this sweater's yarn. She unravelled the entire sweater, washed the yarn and knit another garment. She didn't win any gold medals but found it extremely satisfying that she had retrieved this yarn and put it once again to good use. Once you start to unravel a sweater, you will soon determine if it will unravel in ball lengths or just in bits and pieces. Obviously, multi-colored garments will likely contain much shorter lengths of yarn not adequate for knitting.

Once you have unravelled the sweater, wash the yarn by hand and gently wrap it around a plastic cutting board or a large book protected with plastic wrap and allow to dry. This should remove all those kinks and curls that have been locked into the yarn. Rewind the yarn into even amounts by weight or length so that you can determine how much yardage you have retrieved. Even if you don't have enough for a complete garment, this yarn could be used to knit ribbing, cuffs, or trim. Again, remember to match the fiber content to facilitate easy laundering.

So if you take on recycling yarn as a challenge or a purely practical exercise, your project will take on a fresh look either in texture or style. You will at the same time appease your "green" conscience to recycle and gain satisfaction from the fact that you have saved a few of those "green" dollar bills.

Author: Vincent

Needlework is one of the most cost effective and fun hobbies a person can have. The person creating the needlework focuses on a pastime that is both creative and relaxing at the same time. When the work is completed there is a beautiful creation that can be worn or used in the home as a decorative item. As time requires everyone to live a busy and chaotic lifestyle this type of hobby is becoming more and more scarce. If you have the time and patience you can develop the skills to turn a hobby into a marketable product that is of a higher quality than the over produced machine made items that are found most often today. This should allow the person practicing needlecraft the ability to claim a space in the home that is just for needlework. A place to keep your tools and supplies is absolutely necessary to turning this hobby into a great home business. If you need to get your hobby room in order here are some great tips.

No matter the type of needlework you are doing, quilting, sewing clothing, craft items or beautiful embroidery you will need to keep your space separated into areas for each task. You will no doubt have special tools and equipment that are used for each task of your fabric hobby.

You will have to wash many of the items that you use in your fabric hobby before you use them. Some fabrics must be shrunk before you are able to cut them. If you work a beautiful piece of embroidery onto a fabric that has a stain or smudge of dirt your work will be ruined. You should make sure that part of your home’s laundry area is set-aside for the special fabric cleaners that you use. Cleaners for spot removal and delicate items should be stored separately from the regular laundry detergent that is used in the home. You should keep your hand wash cleaners near the kitchen sink so that you can take advantage of the larger sink capacity and the counter space in the kitchen. Keep some towels nearby for this purpose.

An area to dry the fabrics after they have been cleaned is very important as well. Some fabrics will need to be stretched out on a rack for drying. You should make sure that your drying area is kept away from things that can cause the fabric to become dirty again while it is being dried. You don’t want the smell of last night’s dinner to become infused in your freshly washed fabric. You will be able to dry some of your fabrics in your dryer, but they will need to be immediately hung up or folded to keep the wrinkles away. Other fabrics should not be dried in the dryer and will need to be kept in a safe area.

Fabrics, once they are dried will also need to be pressed. You can accomplish this task in your laundry room or in the sewing room. The size of the fabric will determine whether you can use an ironing board or will need a larger area like a table to press the fabric. You should use a non-stick pressing sheet when you press your fabrics. This should also be kept near your sewing machine in case you must make some touch ups to a piece of fabric that you are working on.

You should also have an area that is designated for cutting patterns. You can use a table and chair, but make sure that it is comfortable for you. The most important thing about your cutting area is that it is the correct height for you to work comfortably and it has adequate light. Use the same table that you use for pressing in your sewing room.

The assembly of your fabric items will need a special area as well. You will need a spot to sew together pieces of a quilt or making a counted cross-stitch piece. A spot that has a comfortable chair and a table for the pieces of your work works the best. The space should be well lit to reduce eyestrain when you are working on very small areas and a place to keep the tools that you will need.

When you have a well thought out workspace you will find that your work is much easier to accomplish. All of the tools that you will need will be close by and everything will be well organized. The work will proceed much more efficiently if your workspace is planned and thought out. It is worth the time and effort to create a workspace for your sewing hobby.

Author: RyanC

Have you ever tried to figure out how to recycle leather? Your fringed leather jacket from 1986 used to be so fashionable, but now it’s time to make some room in your closet. You don’t want to throw it in the garbage (so many memories!) but can it be recycled?

Unfortunately there’s no specific leather recycling bin for community pickup. Unlike glass and plastic, it isn’t possible to melt leather down and make a new leather coat or bag. Your best bet when trying to recycle leather is to find another use for your old leather goods. For example, if it’s something you’d like to keep (like a leather wristband), but it has a tear, take it to be fixed. A store that sells leather goods may be able to help you with this. Another option is to get a do-it-yourself repair kit for leather. This works especially well on car seats and couches.

If leather clothes, bags or shoes are in wearable condition but you’re done with them, consider donating them. Goodwill and Salvation Army are always accepting donations for used clothing, bags and shoes. They’ll also accept furniture, like couches and recliners. Soles 4 Souls is a nonprofit organization which collects used shoes and gives them to those in need. You can learn how to get your used leather shoes to them at www.solesforsouls.org. Soles4Souls receives large donations from footwear companies, retailers, churches, nonprofit ministries, civic groups, schools, and individuals and saw that this could become a full time organization. That's why Soles4Souls was created – to facilitate the donations from these groups to the people who desperately need footwear. Keep in mind that donating your old leather goods will be a tax write-off come April.

If your leather goods are beyond repair or are un-wearable, they’ll have to be thrown away. Even goods labeled “recycled leather” are made from leftover scraps when the product was being made; not from old Coach handbags.

Still, some companies are doing everything they can to make the most out of old leather. Flooring made from recycled leather is starting to make an appearance. Hopefully this will become a popular flooring option and leather will be able to find yet another use.

Sewing Accessories

Author: Alan Marshall

Every person who is into sewing or craft knows that over time they will have a very large collection of accessories. These can be paper accessories such as sewing patterns, patchwork patterns, crochet patterns, knitting patterns and quilting books. Such accessories need to be stored flat for optimum protection so that they will give years of service and value for money.

A storage cabinet or shelf set with rather shallow drawers is the best way to store paper patterns or craft books. That way you don’t have to remove too much to reach the one that is underneath.

But then there are the fabric accessories such as quilting fabric or even that bargain piece of dress material or furry teddy bear material that you simply had to have. These sewing accessories need to be stored in a place that is free of dust and that bugs cannot penetrate. A camphorwood chest is ideal as insects do not like the smell of the camphor. Materials can be rolled up to prevent them from creasing.

More bulky items are craft kits such as your Kaffe Fassett quilting kits or textile art kits that contain everything you need to complete a project. All the bits and pieces should be kept together so that all is at hand when you need to work on the project. A cupboard with deeper shelves is ideal of storing such things.

And if you work on craft projects containing smaller parts such as hotfix crystals or beads, small boxes with compartments are ideal for storage. These can be stacked on the shelf in your storage cupboard for easy access.
Then if you are really into designing and creating your own quilt patterns, you will need a place to store your eq6 software, but that is easy. Your computer is sure to have space on the hard drive for such a marvellous piece of software.

Author: Mindy Yahr

The religious aspects of the sacred Easter holiday have sprouted modern traditions like wearing Easter bonnets and creating Easter baskets for children. The Editors at FaveCrafts have put together some of our favorite Easter craft projects – to make celebrating with your family even easier - along with some tips and tricks, and a bit of religious history.

How to make an Easter Bonnet: Craft Projects for Kids

Simple Paper Plate Bonnet

• Have kids decorate paper plates any way they wish. Use pastel paper, markers, stickers, glitter and construction paper to create an Easter design. Punch two holes in the sides of the plate and run a string through to tie around the child’s chin.

Straw Hat Bonnet

• Use an old straw hat (or get an inexpensive one from a craft store) and let kids decorate with artificial flowers and ribbon. Using the same method as above, run an elastic band or long piece of ribbon through the bonnet and tie under child’s chin.

Bunny Ears Bonnet

• Glue together a paper bowl and paper plate to create a hat shape. Cut the paper plate into a brim, leaving about ½ inch border around the edge of the bowl. Allow kids to paint and decorate the hat using poster paint. Once the hat is dry, you can cut bunny ears out of construction paper and lets kids paint the outside the color of the hat, and the inside a lighter shade. To finish the bonnet, cut slits into the paper bowl top to fit in bunny ears and glue or tape to the inside of the bonnet.

The History of the Easter Bonnet

Falling right in with the tradition of wearing new clothes for Easter – in sync with spring representing birth and renewal – the Easter bonnet was made famous by Irving Berlin in the early 20th Century in a reference to the Easter parade in New York City:

In your Easter bonnet,
With all the frills upon it,
You’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter parade.

The Easter parade began in New York in the 1870s and originally was made up of churchgoers carrying flowers from St. Thomas Church to St. Luke’s Church. Today the Easter Bonnet is worn by women and girls to Easter Church services and often to parades. The hats are usually wide-brimmed and decorating with flowers, ribbon or other festive adornments.

Free Religious Easter Card Project: Beaded Easter Cross Card

By Treasure It for Kreinik

Personalized Easter Basket Liners: Kid's Easter Basket Video

Watch this video for tips and tricks on personalized Easter basket liners and how to select what type of synthetic grass is best for your child’s Easter basket.

Easter Basket Lining Tips

    * Make your Easter baskets authentic with real grass! Two weeks before Easter, line a basket with aluminum foil and potting soil. Sprinkle grass seed, cover with a small amount of soil and moisten. Cover the top with plastic wrap and leave in a warm place. Once the grass has begun sprouting, take off the plastic wrap and allow to continue growing. Water daily and in a few weeks you will have a basket filled with grass!

    * If you want to get away from using plastic grass, tissue paper and lace doilies make great (and easy!) Easter basket liners.

* If you want to get away from using plastic grass, tissue paper and lace doilies make great (and easy!) Easter basket liners.
easily recognised from an early age.In her own words she explains during an earlier interview about her early years growing up.
I can remember when in junior school if I painted or draw a picture. They would always end up on the walls of the corridor's and classrooms.I never draw just one picture I liked to draw a series based on colour, texture and theme.I was inspired by the great masters that I saw in Art galleries and books.
My mother went to Art college and I guess I was born with Artist genes.
I continued my desire to create by making numerous amounts of Clothes for my Cindy doll's and then followed this by making my own clothes.
I asked my mother to show me how to pattern cut when I was aged 5 years and have created clothes ever since.
The fashion direction which my career has taken can be affiliated to my parents as my mother was a former Fashion designer before she married my father. My father was the son of a statesman and a QC and therefore always dressed smartly and never dressed down.My fathers style of dress was accentually English aristocratic and classic.Hertiage mixed with Artisan skills have always played a key role in all of my collections.
I love to design with elements of classic and traditional bringing, colour shape and detail into a contemporary setting.
Embellishing
