Every March, the world's best golfers make a stop in Orlando to pay homage to one of the greatest their game has ever seen. "The King", as he is known, plays host at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The tournament takes place at his famed Bay Hill Club and Lodge.

The course is challenging from the first tee, but as it is with any great tournament, the champion is usually decided only by the slightest of margins during the last few holes on Sunday afternoon. The last three holes of the course rarely fail to produce the drama and excitement worthy of this championship. The 16th hole is a risk-reward par-5 that yields numerous birdies, leaving those players who didn't birdie the hole feeling like they gave one back. The final hole has an approach shot that can make even a seasoned veteran question his ability and look for a place to lay up.

Sandwiched between these two is a little jewel of a hole... The par-3 17th hole is a mere 221 yards long that is almost all carry over water. A beautifully unique feature to this hole is the sand bunker that lies between the green and the water. This bunker lines almost the entire front of the green and seems to magically disappear into the water. The high walls of the bunker hide the green visually creating a sense of hopelessness in your effort to find the putting surface. A true test of nerves and fortitude, the 17th hole is as trying as it is beautiful.

This latest golf course piece has been in the works for nearly 5 months. I started on it last Fall. About two-thirds of the way into it, I was asked to create a new piece for a client, so this one got put on hold. As it sat in the corner waiting to be finished, I had numerous ideas on ways to accomplish a certain look for different pieces of the painting. How did I want to present the water? was it going to be a completely still day with a glass-like calmness? Or should there be a slight chop to the water? This was also a first for me to include buildings of any sort in the landscape. Typically, I like to present the course for what it is- without any distractions "man made" additions. However, this time I felt like the homes in the background help develop the painting and add a small area of interest that otherwise may have been lost in the rough.

Harmony Golf Preserve

Here is the latest piece. This is one of the larger paintings I have done, especially in the last few months. The painting stretched 2-feet-by-4-feet. This is a slight contrast from the 8"x10" and 9"x12" beach pieces done through the Summer. Stylistically, this is a whole other ball game as well. While the beach pieces typically only take a few hours and use a much looser brush stroke, this painting took nearly 70 hours of painting time. You know that plastic tip on the end of your shoelace? Well, that is approximately twice as big as the brush I used the paint about 90% of this painting.

When work becomes pleasure again... It had been a number of months since I actually had the opportunity to play some golf. A few weeks ago, I REALLY got the itch- and then I started scratching! What amazes me the most about golf is just how addictive it can be. How can something so frustratingly unperfectable be so gloriously satisfying?

This latest piece is of Harmony Golf Preserve in Harmony, Florida. The painting is one of the largest I have done in a while. Two feet by four feet (that just sounds bigger than 24"x48")! It seems almost cliche when you hear an artist describe creating a painting as 'solving a series of problems' and 'dealing with the challenges presented in capturing a scene...'. I always thought that was a little over-glorified: "you're painting a picture for a living- how problematic and challenging can it really be?" But I'm starting to appreciate those sentiments. I look more and more forward to figuring out what layering technique will best capture the feeling of a late afternoon, Florida thunderstorm brewing. What process will actually make my water look wet? How can I make the viewer feel like they are actually standing on a tee box deciding how they want to play the hole? How can I create a bunker that looks like you could get in it and build a sand castle? Never mind having to deal with that annoying co-worker; I have to decide between a #2 round bristle brush and a #3 synthetic filbert!

Thank you to all of you who were able to make it out to the Lakeridge Winery Festival this past weekend and stopped by to say hello. If you were out on Sunday, you may have seem this painting in progress...

While growing up, a trip to the beach was something I looked forward to all year long. The feel of the sand and salt air on my skin stuck with me for weeks after the trip was over. But as much as I enjoyed my week, I was envious of those who lived there and spent their lives in the water. Those who's tans never faded and feet rarely saw shoes. They could make the girls swoon just by walking by. Not a care in the world except running out of waves. Oh to be one of the Boys of Summer...

Every trip to the beach seems to yeild at least one child on a mission. Sometimes its to find the prettiest seashell ever seen. For others, it may be to dig to China. This little girl was building her castle. Prince Charming surely must have been waiting not far away; ready to ride up on his white horse and wisk her away. This castle would be perfect- fit for the princess that she was.

Beach Babe VI was painted while attending the Lakeridge Winery Summer Harvest Festival.

This golf hole is a classic risk / reward hole. While it plays relatively short at 367 yards from the back tees, there is definitely some strategy required to be successful. Water comes into play on both your tee shot and approach. Anything right or long leaves you virtually no shot at the green in regulation. The expansive green offers little solace to the faint of heart when the flag is tucked left over the water. Attack at your own risk.

On any given day in Winter Park, Florida, you will find at least a half dozen people sitting on the park benches. The majority of these are men- waiting on women. This gentleman seemed to have done this more than once or twice. He obviously knew he was in for a long day of waiting. His first stop was the local bookstore to pick up a little something to help past the time. Judging by the thickness of the book, he didn't expect to move anytime soon.

If you've ever been to the beach on the Atlantic coast, you know that the drive typically includes a short trip across the intercoastal waterway. Depending on what part of the country you are in, this area can range from small salt marshes to wide river-like expanses, sometimes even with their own beaches. These two plams lived just off the intercoastal. It was a breezy day and they seemed to be waging war on each other. Their palm fronds danced in the wind like warriors preparing for a battle. Their arched frames gave only slightly before snapping back into formation. It was a battle that had been going on for years, with no end in sight...

It was obvious this wasn’t her first trip to the beach. She had seen the ocean before. But for a brief moment between chasing seagulls and digging in the sand, she paused as if to admire God’s creation. All of her senses worked in perfect union to tell her that this place was special- the smell of the salt air, the sound of waves crashing against the shore, the feel of sand between her toes. She already had a love for the beach that would not soon be lost. It was perfectly alright that she didn’t have the vocabulary to talk about it... words couldn’t describe this anyway.

Sometimes the paintings almost paint themselves. This was obviously not the first time these guys had waxed their boards. It seemed as though this may have been a daily thing for these two. Get up, check the tide reports, and head to the shore. The discussion could have been over foot position on the board, why the third wave in a set is usually the best, why this brand of board is better than that brand... but most likely it was about that cute girl they met a few minutes earlier. She was hot!

The gossip must have been good in that particular issue, because it seemed like she was reading for hours. Cocoa Beach was busy that day, but I decided to give her a peaceful setting to enjoy the weekly gossip of who was dating whom and which dress would be all the rage this summer. She seemed to be completely oblivious of her surroundings- totally soaking up the sun, the sand, and the “dirt”.

A drive through an orange grove is a life changing experience. The subtle aroma of the orange blossoms as the sun breaks for the first light of day is something to be experienced! This painting is from a quick trip just out of town to a landscape dominated by orange trees. The solitude and beauty of the expanse is like nothing else. That environment inspired this painting. If you close your eyes and focus, you may be able to taste it...
