Julie & I have decided to close the doors (so to speak) on Snowberry Creek Sample Boxes. We have enjoyed working with each of you and hope to stay in touch. We have shipped out the last of the samples in the boxes that left yesterday. If you have been sending us notices about your company's promotions, sales, etc. and want to continue to do so; that will be fine. I don't mind reposting them on our blog. Good luck to each and every one of you.

Julie & I will be revamping the site and embarking on another venture together. We are opening Snowberry Creek Emporium. This site will feature our items and it will be a varied lot. lol

We promised in the beginning that the etailers would always have a link on our website and we will honor that promise. As long as Snowberry Creek exists, the link to your website will be posted and available for our customers to find you. Same on the blog - no one's links will be removed from the blog. Is It An Honor or a Bother?

As most people know, Julie & I run Snowberry Creek together. We do live quite close to one another, but live in different counties. Actually, a river is the county line. Well, to my story or question.

Friday I call Julie on my cell to tell her my (mis)fortune. I had a call from a very nice gentleman informing me that I am to report to the Clark County Courthouse on Wed. morning at 9:00 for jury orientation and the trial will follow. My cell didn't have service at the time, so the nice gentleman just left the message. Wonder what would have happened if I hadn't gotten it? He didn't bother to call my house or ask for confirmation that the message was received. Would I have been in comtempt of court for not appearing?

As I've never served on the jury before, I was a little confused. I thought that you first report for jury selection before serving. Julie tells me she thinks the same and is very sympathic (in a best friend kinda way - lol). Although, she did receive a paper to fill out (at the same time I did) from her county. She is hoping that she's not called and so far it's looking pretty good.

I'm thinking the timing couldn't be worse as the hubs & I had a business trip planned to leave for Pendleton, OR on Sept. 22. I decided to call the Circuit Clerk's office to see if I could get a few more details. She informs me that it is for jury selection.....she says don't cancel your trip yet because you may not be selected (fingers crossed). Then she continues to fill me in....the trial is scheduled to last 7 days (well, if I'm selected...there goes the trip!) Oh, and you will be on the jury roster for the next THREE months.

Hmm....I'm wondering what kind of trial this is. I'll admit that I'm a bit curious to watch and observe the judical system at work. But then again, it seems to me that people are arrested, wait years to go to trial, taxpayers money is spent...hands slap or short sentence and back on the streets again for another go round. So my question is this, "Is it an honor or a bother to be selected to serve on the jury?" I cannot answer this question as I've never served but maybe someone that has can shed some light on the subject.

Oh- by the way, Julie received a call on SUNDAY morning at 9:00 am that she has to report in her county for jury selection on Thursday. She was on the phone with me at 9:01 to tell me her good fortune - LOL Aren't we just the lucky ones! :)

Summer is Heating Up!

Heating up is an understatement. Summer in Arkansas is HOT and humid! Makes us all look forward to those crisp, fall days...Julie & I just had a discussion on how the Eastern Seaboard is having a heat wave and the media is all atwitter. If California or the Western U.S. has a heat wave that too is a newsworthy event. We have many days of over 100° temps in Arkansas and it is very rarely newsworthy. Well, maybe if we have 15 or 20 days of 100° temps in a row...just maybe. I think the reason is that we are always hot in July & August so no one pays much attention to us. If you live in Arkansas, then you know that it will be HOT and it will be HUMID. My great-grandmother called those hot days "the dog days of summer".

This gets me to wondering why the old-timers called those hot, humid days in late July and August "dog days". Off to "Google" I went to see what I could find on this subject. The "dog days of summer" are the hottest, most sultry days of the year. Well, that certainly qualifies our days in Arkansas to be labeled as such!
The "dog days" usually occur between early July and early September. I found it interesting that "dog days" may be used to define a period that is very hot or stagnant or that is marked by a dull lack of progress. These are the days of the year when rainfall is at its lowest. I can definitely understand the lack of progress! It’s hard to move when you almost have a heatstroke from very little effort and you’re drenched from the humidity.

It is curious to note that the name was derived from an ancient belief that Sirius, also known as the Dog Star, was responsible for the hot weather. Once upon a time “dog days” were thought to be an evil time – “when the seas boiled – wine turned sour and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies” according to Brady’s Clavis Calendarium, 1813.

To me “dog days” means hot & tired – so hot that it is almost impossible to catch your breath or move your feet. It’s when you pray that your air-conditioner doesn’t fail; you feel sorry for anyone that has to work outside; the grass has all turned brown and crunchy; any outdoor activity involves laying in a pool of water and drinking tall glasses of cold refreshments. Just simply too hot to do anything but lie around in the shade or better yet under the a/c while waiting on fall to arrive.
We are “smack dab” in the middle of the Dog Days, so while I’m waiting for them to pass - I’m dreaming of cool, crisp fall air!

Note: For those of you that have never heard the phrase “smack dab” – it’s another of my great-granny’s sayings - it means right there – directly, squarely.

Please remember the brave men & women who have defended & those who defend today - our country so that we may enjoy hot dogs, hamburgers, fireworks, etc. While we are immersed in festivities with our families, they are many miles from home in less than ideal conditions so that we may enjoy our liberties. A heartfelt Thank You to the ones who choose to serve our country!

Fragrance descriptions:

Raspberry Cream Cupcake - A wonderful fragrance that begins with top notes of fresh raspberries, pear and apple; followed by middle notes of Madagascar vanilla, blonde sugar cane, butter and maple; well rounded with a dry base note of vanilla.

Champagne Sugar - Sugary fruits of lemon, bergamot, mandarin, orange, apple, banana, dew fruit and pineapple with hints of jasmine, rose, plum, muget, peony, heliotrope, amber sandalwood and musk. Wonderful fragrance!

I asked Becky for a few words of wisdom for anyone thinking of starting a business. I believe she is right on target.

My words of wisdom (by Becky) - If you are passionate about your business you will succeed. Always do something to put your business out there, whether it is 10 minutes or many hours. Building a business takes time and effort and just because you are self-employed doesn't mean you will have a lot of time on your hands. Being self-employed is usually harder than being employed as you have to have self discipline. There are many free advertising opportunities out there, but places that offer to send your samples out help you get your product out to many people for only the "cost" of what your samples cost you to make and postage...and will increase your chances of being noticed by a larger audience-people like to touch, feel, and smell (in my case) what you have to offer. This gives them a chance to do so, and not just a banner ad on a site-although that is helpful also.

Remember the pictures above are wax creations from Country Keepsakes....not real food. I know it is hard to believe as they look so real. They will look & smell great sitting around, but I bet they will fill the room with the most wonderul aroma while burning.
