If I start singing "There's a hundred and four days of summer vacation then school comes along just to end it." You probably know that I am talking about Phineas and Ferb. My kids love that show and when we went to Disney World this past year we stood in the rain for 30 minutes just so they could meet the characters. So when Phineas and Ferb: The Best Live Tour Ever came to town we had to go. I wasn't sure if my oldest was going to be into it since he is just too cool sometimes to do the things his siblings do, but they all had a great time. The characters were really on point and they sang and danced to all the greatest hits of the show. I even caught myself singing along to the songs I knew. Well I guess as you can tell I have been slacking on updating the blog. That must mean school is back in session and I am running around like a crazy person. The kids have been back for a little over 3 weeks and I am definitely happy to be back to the school routine, but I feel like all of my time is now consumed by my children. Between school, sports and activities I am constantly asking do you have your schoolwork? Do you have your equipment? Do you have my keys? Of course, these are all asked at the last minute and anyone who knows me knows that I am OCD about never being late for anything. Hey, I was an hour early for my own wedding.
I know I am not the only one engulfed in the back to school chaos. We just had open house last week and I had the opportunity to meet my kids teachers. It was definitely nice to get to know who will be dealing with my kids for 180 days. I have been a parent at the kids school for 8 years so I feel as though I know the staff pretty well, but until you actually get a chance to really sit down and talk to your child's teachers you really don't know what they are all about. So far the biggest issue that we have had is with Drew's teacher. It isn't so much an issue with her, but getting Drew to adapt to the way she does things. She is tough and is trying to get the kids ready for junior high next year. I guess that is a good thing, but Drew has had to pay the price because he hasn't been the best example of a good student. He is definitely trying and we have seen some improvement. It is only the 1st month of school so we have a long way to go. Hopefully, this year will be full of successes. I can say that being out of work and being at the disposal of my children has made this year a lot easier. It's funny, I never considered being a stay at home mom when the kids were little. I know that lots of people would be appalled by that statement. I really don't think I could have dealt with being home all the time with my kids when they were little and I am one that believes that kids thrive and gain independence when put into an environment where they get to be with other kids. Although now, I love being home. I am able to help my kids with their homework and make sure that they have access to everything they need to be successful. They don't seem to mind it either.

I always say I am the meanest parent out there since my kids even my almost 12 year old have an 8 o'clock bedtime, but this list proves there are some really good reasons for it. Drew has asked if he can increase his bedtime to 8:30 when he turns 12 and I think he probably deserves that much.

So the kids are back in school and I am enjoying the silence of an empty house. It is awesome! The best part of this is that all 3 of my wonderful children are happy with being back at school. They all have great teachers and a great mix of classmates. Even my oldest son has set attainable goals for this, his last year of elementary school. I know it's still early, but the fear I posted about a few posts back is starting to disappear. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is all an indicator on how the rest of the school year will go.

I have been blessed with 3 children who love school. I think a lot of this is based on how easy it comes to them. Just a forewarning I am about to do some kid bragging. I have really smart kids. So smart that I am not sure if I am going to be able to keep up with them as they get older. My oldest is actually ridiculously smart and loves learning. He is involved in an advanced learning program in school and loves embracing anything new. My typical middle child is also very smart, but is not as boisterous about sharing it with everyone like his big brother. He isn't a huge fan of school as a whole, but he is motivated. He is also Mr. Popular with the ladies so we have to keep an eye on that. My phone rings off the hook for him everyday. I definitely don't ever see him having any issues in the friends department. Then there is my baby. She is just as smart as both boys. She finished out her first grade year by being way ahead of the rest of her class in reading and already working on second grade curriculum. She is also the social butterfly of the family and loves hanging with her friends. So, as a whole you can see that my kids will hopefully have a wonderful school year. What I need to do is start studying so I can keep up with them. In only one year I will have a junior high school student.

As a mother of 3 kids I have been through my ups and downs. Even with two kids who were born with medical issues I feel like I have had it pretty easy. My kids are smart and well behaved most of the time. Of course, I am biased as they are raised by a smart and well behaved mother. Lately though, my oldest child is making me more and more frustrated. Just a back story about him. He is going to be 12 years old and entering the sixth grade. He is considered exceptionally smart and knows more about things that most people wouldn't even think of. For fun he will make up math games to play or set up a full football season and then run the games in his head. I am also pretty sure he has read more books than my husband and I put together and we both enjoy reading. The good thing is besides being smart he is athletic and is involved in multiple sports throughout the school year. He is a wonderfully social kid and extremely nice to everyone he knows so why am I so frustrated? Ever since Drew was a toddler I have been told that he needs to be tested for the dreaded "ADHD". When he was young I refused it. I always knew he was ahead of the curve considering we were able to hold full conversations with him since he was 1. Now don't get me wrong I know every parent believes that their kid is exceptional and I feel that every child is in one way or another so I am not down-playing any other parent out there. We just knew early on he was a different kid. Once he hit elementary school I had a lot of parent meetings. Never as bad as they could have been. Lots of positive feedback on how smart Drew is and he is a wonderful student. There was always the dreaded "but" mixed into all the praise. He always did his work very quickly and correctly, but he was disruptive to his classmates when he was left with idle time. He always had something to say about everything and many times they were not at the right time. I finally broke down when he was in 3rd grade and had him tested and the doctor said he was perfectly fine. He had no deficiencies in school and there was no indication that anything was holding him back. So, as a parent I tried to come up with alternatives to help him learn to control his impulses and constant talking. We also got really lucky with some great teachers who understood how to reign him in if he started being distracting to others. So, why am I so frustrated now? School starts in 4 days and I am worried about him. I have found myself getting angry at his constant comments and talking all the time. Many of it is at inappropriate times or things that have nothing to do with what is actually going on at the moment. I do have to remind myself that he is never trying to be disruptive and I do feel like he has so much going on in his head that he feels like he has to say what is on his mind. The problem that I have is a fear that he is going to suffer from his lack of verbal self control. He also has a tendency to be shunned by peers because he talks out of turn or over people. Plus, I feel that he isn't always going to get a teacher who understands him and that he may lose his love of learning because he is in trouble more than he is being praised. I am really hoping that all my fears are foolish and he proves me wrong by having a wonderful year in school.

So one thing I enjoy doing when I have a free moment or let me be honest waste time is use an application on the browser firefox called Stumbleupon. I was introduced to to using this back when I was employed in a call center environment and we all basically use it to pass the time and keep each other entertained. A quick synopsis of what StumbleUpon does is you basically input topics of interest and it you press a button and it boom it brings you to all different websites. Some are interesting, some are informative and some (depending on your settings) are quite shocking and disturbing. I have actually found lots of great craft ideas and recipes while I was supposed to be working or parenting or something more productive. I think today though, I found the most interesting and important thing I have ever seen on the internet. It is an instructional video on how to be a good housewife. Clearly, I have been doing wrong all these years. Now, don't worry I am taking this all in jest and couldn't imagine ever having the time or energy to be like Betty. (This will make sense when you watch the video.) So take 2:00 minutes to watch this and get a good laugh. Now if you were a good housewife you would be making sure all of your husband's needs are being taken care of and then having fun cleaning. Don't worry I am pretty sure we are all not meeting the standards.

So, lately I have found myself not crawling into bed at my normal bedtime and sitting on Facebook wasting away the hours. I have quite a few things that I blame. Let's see there is my addiction to caffeine or the medications that are actually supposed to make me sleepy, but work in an opposite capacity. It could be the fact that I am trying to plan out all three of my kids lives for the next 11 years. (Probably, not option #3) I wouldn't be so annoyed by my new found party lifestyle if I was actually out partying and living it up. As if I had to remind you I am a thirty-something mother of 3 kids who find 6am as an acceptable time to start the day so if you are looking for me I am comfortably sitting in my butt dent in the couch. I am really hoping to kick this late night habit soon because school starts in less than a week and I have to get back to my responsible parent role. Those PB&J sandwiches aren't going to make themselves.

I am totally feeling like a bad parent today. Well, lately it has been every other day. My boys play football and have daily practices. The past few days I really haven't wanted to go. I actually love that they play and I enjoy watching them grow and learn, but I am not big on sitting at practice. It is social for me. I get to hang out with the other parents and chit chat and complain about everything that is going on, but lately I have been feeling super rundown and sore and just generally miserable. Since the hubby is a coach it is easy for me to "get out" of practice because he can bring the boys. Today, not so much. My oldest has a game at one field and my middle son has practice at our home field so I have to go to practice today. I know once I get there it will be fine, but it is the build up to getting ready to go. I am guessing once the real season gets going I will change my tune and get back into my full-fledged obnoxious football mom mentality. Go Warwick Pal Patriots!!! Guess I should get ready for practice. Wahhhhh!!!!

So at one time I was attempting to be one of those crazy extreme couponer like they show on TV. While I did save a good amount of money I also spent a lot of time driving myself nuts. So now that I may be out of a job soon and we do need a second vehicle I think I need to get back on the savings road. So to help myself start saving I ordered a bunch of coupons off of Ebay. Yes, it sounds a little crazy to spend money to save money. Luckily, the money I spent I had earned from another savings program that I use so really no money wasted. So now I have to see if I can actually get back on track and save some money. I think if I put my mind to it I can. I just need to get myself organized again. Don't worry I will make sure to update this blog as I get back into savings mode.

It has been quite a while since I have posted anything on this blog. This has been a parenting blog, a savings blog, a food blog and a general place for me to moan and groan about life. So now that I want to get this started again I am trying to decide in what direction I would like to take this. So I decided to sit down and just write what was on my mind. I have been through a lot in the past few months. I have had two major surgeries within a six month period of time and it has had a profound effect on my every day life. If I hadn't explained before I have hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus stands for water on the brain. Basically my body does not have the ability to drain fluid naturally and I have to have an implant called a shunt put in my head to help it drain. I have put a link on the page if you want all the basics.

About Hydrocephalus

Now I am not new to hydrocephalus or surgeries. I have had the condition for 21 years and have been through multiple surgeries. Most of the time they help with whatever is going on at the time and then I am good for quite a few years. This time I wasn't so lucky. So here is the back-story of this past surgery experience. About 4 years ago I was advised by my neurosurgeon that I was possibly free of my hydrocephalus and that the shunt that I had was not needed anymore. So lucky for me I got to have another quickie surgery and then I was considered shunt free. I made it over 3 years without any issues, so I thought. I even started becoming a little lax on going to my yearly doctors appointments. Then, low and behold some symptoms started popping up and a coworker convinced me to make a doctors appointment and that is when I learned that I would be going back under the knife and getting a new shunt. Yeah, so that shunt didn't work so well and I felt worse than I had before. On top of all that I rushed back to work only 2 months after surgery. That was a bad idea. I worked for about 3 months and finally got referred over to a specialist who is the top doctor on my condition and we decided I needed another surgery. Most people would be freaked out to go under the knife, but I was excited that we may be going down the right road and I finally may live life in a comfortable place. So I had surgery 5 weeks ago and so far so good. I still am uncomfortable and I know it is going to take a while before I feel like myself again, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I have embraced my short hairstyle and I think I am going to keep it going for a while. So I am embracing all the positives of this experience.

There are some negatives. Right now I am waiting to see if I am going to lose my job. I have been out of work since the end of June and I was in an ongoing fight with the short term disability company my employer uses and I unfortunately lost so there is no requirement for them to keep my position. Honestly, I have enjoyed my summer being home with my kids. I think I will enjoy being a stay at home mom for a while, especially since I really think I am more beneficial to my kids when I am here. My 3 kids will be going into 2nd, 4th and 6th grade and I want to be that active parent who doesn't have to say "no we can't go because I have to work." With unemployment the way it is I really should embrace that I have a good job, but I am in a very unhappy place with the company I work with. I don't do the job I was hired for and I feel like I am losing the knowledge and skills that took me years to perfect. I guess it is just a wait and see for me at this point and I will have to plan around my health since that is the most important thing. I see lots of change in my future and now I think I am going to have to write about it all.

So I just received my newest Bzz Campaign and I think the miracle has been discovered. So I am not a big makeup person. I wear it when I am heading out or if I just need a boost. Well let's just say I decided when I got this that I would try it on right away and OMG!!!! I actually looked healthy and well rested. I am in love with COVERGIRL & Olay. I have found myself wearing makeup almost daily because it makes my skin look healthier. I belong to a great program called Bzzagent.com which allows my to try out new products and share them with everyone and recently they sent me out a new razor to try. Now as a backstory I have to tell you I have really sensitive skin and look like a Freddy Kruger victim when I am done shaving so I was a little skeptical. Well let me tell you I was shocked and amazed at how nice my legs look. They are so nice and smooth and am now addicted to these razors. It has even gotten to the point where I get my friends to touch my legs to prove how good these razors work. So I have been trying to get into a routine of better eating habits for myself and my family. I love to cook, but I also hate to cook. Being a full time working mother of three makes it difficult to cook and get healthy meals on the table. I also work evenings so many times I am cooking for the family as opposed to sitting down to a nice family meal. So my new plan is to try and come up with meals that are simple and easy. I would also like to come up with some good cook and freeze meals. I have a huge empty freezer that I could easily stockpile with meals that would easily keep the family fed. So far I have come up with a few ideas, but I am always looking for new ideas. Also, in this horrible economy I feel that making a group of meals will save money and that we won't catch ourselves eating out as often. I will post any of the ideas that I come up with or discover so anyone else who is interested in some new dinner ideas can grab some of these ideas.

So I have been a parent for over 8 years now and think that I am pretty keen on seeing changes in my kids. I think I know their personalities pretty well. Lately, I have been a little concerned about my middle son. We have already had a parent-teacher conference about his attention and behavior and I can never get a straight answer on how things are going in school. His impulsive actions are out of control and he is constantly in trouble. I am planning another meeting with his teacher and I am trying to get him under control. I tried discussing this with my husband today and he basically said to me "he doesn't act like this when your not around." So basically this is all my fault. Plus, I got the "it's because you baby him". Well, of course I do he is my baby and the interactions between hubby and the kids is a little harsh. Basically what I am getting at is I am sick and tired of two types of parenting and being the blame for the way our kids act. I guess I am at the point where I need a cohesion in the way we deal with our kids and I need him to see that the kids also mimic the things that he does and I hate having to clean up that mess on top of every other mess in the house.

So I have taken up sewing again...

Not sure who wrote it, but I feel this says so much...

A woman who feels desired is many things:
She is less likely to reach frustration with
you
or the children
or the cat
or the dog.
She is more likely to feel like an important part of
your life
and the home you share
and the children you created together.
She is more likely to look at her own body
and instead of feeling disgust at the way it has changed
since bringing your children into the world,
she is more likely to remember the feel of
your hands on her hips
or trailing down her spine
or the way that you pull her in
and fit her perfectly into the spaces of your own form.
A woman who feels desired
is so much easier to sit across the table from
as she is less likely to be judging
her own skin
her own curves
her own worth
her place in the bed that you share.
She is more likely to care for the body she has been given,
feed it good, whole foods
put it to frequent use in the garden
enjoy the pull of muscle
and increasing strength
as she carries ever-growing children
and becomes more confident with household repairs.
A woman who feels desired will rear children
who see their bodies as perfect works of art
that should be celebrated
respected
and capable of love.

It takes very little to make a woman feel desired.
It does not require
expensive jewelery
exotic flowers
pages of poems
romantic dates
or even dramatic words.
You can tell a woman you desire her
with nothing more than a look
a simple touch
a well placed word
and by listening to what she's saying
and then responding appropriately.

Without those simple things
even a strong woman may start to feel
less.
And less leads to
depression
self loathing
anger
frustration
bad parenting
and a marriage
that may not last the next five years.

So when your wife asks you,
"Do you find me sexy?"
the answer should never be
a long pause
followed by a apologetic
"I just love you."

Lie to me
if you have to,
but tell me "yes"
and then watch
as my confidence continues
to bloom
and my heart stays open
even when the world
is throwing us curve balls.
Because sometimes,
a woman needs to know she is desired
or she'll start to believe
it is no longer true.

Christmas time road trip

Well it is that time of year again. It's Christmas time and we did a low-key family Christmas at home this year. Now we are gearing up for a trip to Indiana for our family Christmas. It is a 15 hour drive. Now the hubby and I do enjoy a good road trip and have made the trip a few times. This is our first trip with all three kids. So we have gotten the snacks, movies, video games and entertainment and hopefully we will survive this little family fun trip. We are heading out early in the morning let's say about 1am. We are hoping the kids will sleep a good portion of the trip. We want to try to drive straight through and get there by about 6pm. We will be staying a week and I have lots of fun little adventures to take the kids on. This is also an informational trip because we are actually thinking about moving out to the midwest. We plan to take a look at some options for housing while we are out there. So keep your fingers crossed that we have a safe and sane trip. I don't want to have to come home with one less kid.

Time for holiday chaos...

Well there are only 3 days left until Christmas eve. As much as I love the holidays I hate the chaos. This year is going to be a little different than years past. This is actually the first year that we will be spending Christmas morning at home. Generally, we go to my inlaws house and do the whole family Christmas thing there, but this year we will be travelling to the great state of Indiana to celebrate with the family. Now I am extremely excited about this trip since we don't get to go on family trips too ofter, but what I am not too excited about is the 14 hour drive that we will be taking. Okay, so I love a good road trip, but we will be hitting the road with our three wonderful children. (I say that lightly) I am trying to come up with enough activities that will keep them busy for this ride. Now they will be getting some Christmas gifts that will definitely keep them occupied, but I need to come up with some other ideas so my sanity is not lost as we travel through the mountains of PA.
